DeGette Statement on Republican-Led Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Diana DeGette (First District of Colorado)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Diana DeGette (CO-01) released the following statement after Republicans in Congress shut the government down.

“Last night, Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans, who control all of Washington, shut the government down because they refuse to work with Democrats to ensure that all Americans have affordable health care. On the day of the shutdown, House Republicans weren’t even in Washington. That is a gross abdication of responsibility.

“Now, Donald Trump is pledging to be as cruel as possible. He and Russ Vought are going to try to use their shutdown to eviscerate the federal government and make it harder for Americans to get the benefits they deserve, access our beautiful national parks, and safely and securely travel.

“The health of the American people demands that Republicans come back to the table to find a path forward. I’m ready to work.”

Nadler Statement on Trump Administration Freezing $18 Billion in NYC Infrastructure Funds

New York, NY, October 1, 2025

Today, Representative Jerrold Nadler (NY-12) released the following statement on the Trump administration freezing $18 billion for Hudson tunnel and Second Avenue subway projects:

“The Trump Administration is shamefully freezing funding for two of the most critical infrastructure projects in the nation because Democrats refused to rubber-stamp a plan that does nothing to stop Americans’ health insurance premiums from doubling.

These aren’t just local transportation projects. This unprecedented political retribution could put our nation’s entire economy at risk. Experts have long warned that a Hudson Tunnel failure could trigger a regional recession that drags down the entire U.S. economy.

The freeze will immediately hurt American families, Republicans and Democrats alike. More than 150,000 good-paying American jobs are on the line, and more than 300,000 commuters a day, of every political stripe, depend on these projects to keep the region moving.

It should concern every American that the Trump Administration is willing to harm working families and our nation’s economy to punish Democrats.

This freeze must be reversed immediately.”

REP LIEU SLAMS TRUMP SHUTDOWN, CALLS ON REPUBLICANS TO SAVE HEALTHCARE

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Ted Lieu (33 District of California)

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after Donald Trump and House Republicans shut down the federal government.

“Americans are already crushed under the stress of inflation and a weak economy. Now add to that the biggest increase in health insurance costs in 15 years. And where are Republicans? On vacation. Republicans chose to shut the government down instead of saving health care for Americans and voting to release the Epstein files.

“Republicans control the White House, the House, and the Senate. Their decision to not negotiate and to not bring Members back for a vote is why our country is here. The Trump shutdown is on them. In what other line of work could you blow off a critical deadline and expect to keep your job? Why do Republicans think they can consistently act in the best interest of their billionaire friends and ignore the needs of hardworking Americans?

“Democrats are in DC, ready to work. Republicans: show up and do your jobs! It’s insanity.

“Because Republicans control every branch of government, they could stop the shutdown today. Senate Republicans can change their stupid and arcane rules to pass things on the floor with a majority vote, just like they did a few weeks ago to push through Trump’s radical nominees. The fact that Senate Republicans changed their rules a few weeks ago but are not doing so now shows that Republicans want this shutdown.”

In CA-36, 36,000 people in CA-36 will see their health care costs rise if Republicans let critical tax credits expire. For a 60-year-old couple earning $82,800 a year, their annual premium will rise by $13,783. For a family of four earning $129,800 a year, their annual premiums will rise by $6,174. In CA-36, 27,765 people will lose health coverage because of Republican cuts to Medicaid (also known in California as Medi-Cal) in the Big Ugly Law and their plot to gut the Affordable Care Act.

Rep. Aguilar on Congressional Republicans’ Decision to Shut Down the Government

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Pete Aguilar (31 CD Ca)

“Rep. Pete Aguilar released the following statement on Congressional Republicans’ decision to shut down the government rather than work with Democrats on a bipartisan funding bill that protects Americans’ health care:
“America is facing dual health care and affordability crises that require immediate action. Yet today, Congressional Republicans chose to shut down the government, rather than work with Democrats to lower costs or protect Americans’ health care.
“For months, Democrats have been sounding the alarm, imploring Republicans to work with us to undo their harmful cuts to Medicaid and extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits in order to prevent millions of Americans from losing their coverage.
“Failure isn’t an option here. Republicans control the House, Senate and the White House. They could reverse course, reopen the government, and work with Democrats to save health care.
“If they don’t, 15 million Americans will lose their health care, including up to 3.4 million Californians on Medi-Cal. Hospitals will close, children won’t get their medication, wait times will get longer, seniors won’t be able to see their doctors, and people will still get sick.
“I’ll do everything in my power to ensure this doesn’t happen and will keep fighting for the Inland Empire every step of the way.”

Speaker Johnson: How Long Will Democrats Let Chuck Schumer Lead Their Party Off a Cliff?

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04)

WASHINGTON — After Senate Democrats voted to shut down the government last night, Speaker Johnson joined Good Morning America on ABC News and Mornings with Maria on Fox Business to encourage Senate Democrats to reject their far-left base and vote to reopen the government.

Watch Speaker Johnson on ABC News here, on Fox Business here.

On Democrats voting to shut down the government:

Let me tell you what happened last night, everybody can go and review the facts for themselves. 44 Senate Democrats voted to reject a clean, nonpartisan continuing funding resolution to keep the United States government open. The Democrats instead that they wanted to give healthcare to illegal aliens instead of keeping critical services provided for the American citizens. That’s what happened, plain and simple. Every Democrat in the house except one voted against the clean continuing resolution. It was nonpartisan in nature. There are no policy riders on it that Republicans favor. It’s exactly what Chuck Schumer and other Democrats voted for in March. But they’ve changed their tune. They changed their tune because Chuck Schumer is having political problems right now. That’s just a simple fact. And everybody knows that he’s trying to outrun the far-left portion of his base, so he’s decided to inflict pain on the American people.

On Chuck Schumer leading Democrats off a cliff:

What the president did in showing leadership two days ago was, he brought in Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries to meet with me and leader Thune in the Senate to try to work this out. He gave them unlimited time in the Oval Office, and they would not come to the table to do exactly, George, what they themselves have said repeatedly, over and over and over. We have a highlight reel playing on my social media that shows Chuck Schumer in his own words for the last decades, saying that a shutdown would be dangerous and disastrous and reckless. And now he’s the one leading his party off the cliff.

There’s one question that Senate Democrats have to ask today. How long are they going to allow Chuck Schumer to do this to them so that he himself can get political cover from the far-left corner of his base? He believes he’s going to get a challenge for the Senate from AOC. That’s what changed his mind. That’s what’s driving this agenda and it’s harming real American people. You said at the outset how many people will be unpaid. Many people will lose their jobs over this, TSA agents, you know, the troops won’t be paid. They have to go to work. They won’t be paid because Chuck Schumer wants to play political games with a nonpartisan continuing resolution to keep government operating.

On Democrat lies about their own proposal to provide free health care to illegal aliens:

I’d like everybody to go read the bill for themselves. They rejected our clean, non-partisan continuing resolution, and they filed their own, what Chuck Schumer presented as the counter proposal. Look at page 57. Section 2141. They would repeal Maria, what we put into the one big, beautiful bill, the Working Families Tax Cuts. In that provision was the healthcare section. They want to repeal it in its entirety. That section has been wildly successful. The Congressional Budget Office issued a report earlier last month, a few weeks ago, and they said that that bill has already saved taxpayers $185 billion because it’s got 2.3 million ineligible recipients kicked off of Medicaid. What does that mean?

There’s a lot of illegal aliens that were on that program who are not eligible to be there. It was draining resources from the people that it’s intended to help. And that is young pregnant women, the disabled and the elderly. We are strengthening Medicaid, and the Democrats want to unwind that because they have a political talking point. This thing about the subsidies is an issue that is to be debated and decided by the end of the year. It doesn’t expire until December 31. They’ve inserted it into the September funding decision because they’re trying to show a fight against Trump. It’s ridiculous. They have nothing to argue, and everybody here knows that.

Speaker Johnson on Democrat-Led Government Shutdown: “A Reckless Decision”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04)

WASHINGTON — Last night, after Senate Democrats rejected a clean, nonpartisan, short-term continuing resolution and voted to shut down the government, Speaker Johnson joined The Ingraham Angle on Fox News and The Source with Kaitlan Collins on CNN to dispel Democrat lies about the clean CR and discuss the consequences of a government shutdown for American citizens.

Watch Speaker Johnson on Fox News here, on CNN here.

On Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats decision to shut down the government:

It’s a very reckless decision that Chuck Schumer has made. The Democrats have taken the last vote within the last few hours, they voted it down once again, and so there’s no other option. Now, it’s important to note what they’re doing here. They are throwing a fit, they’re making partisan arguments. The House did its job. We sent to the Senate a clean CR. What that means, it’s a very short, stopgap funding measure so that the appropriators in Congress and both parties can continue their work of doing the appropriations bills, 12 separate bills. We made a lot of progress in that. We just need a little more time because tonight is the end of the fiscal year.

Chuck Schumer has refused to give the extra time. Why? Because we won’t agree to restore healthcare to illegal aliens, because we won’t agree to give a half a billion dollars back to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. He wants to cut the big fund of $50 billion that we set aside to support and prop up rural hospitals in America because we won’t agree to those partisan demands. And $1.5 trillion in new spending on a seven-week, stopgap funding measure. He’s decided to shut the government down. It’s real pain for real Americans, and it’s so frustrating.

On everyday Americans who will be harmed by a government shutdown:

What they’ve decided to do tonight with their vote is to close the government. And what that means, everybody needs to understand, is real pain for real Americans. What does that mean? It means women, infants and children do not get their nutrition programs. That is not funded anymore. Veterans don’t get their healthcare services, suicide prevention and other very important things that are very timely. You have low-income persons who are Medicaid, Medicare recipients who are receiving care at home. Those programs are now lapsed. And they just decided to do it. So the only question tonight is, how long will Chuck Schumer keep the government closed? It’s a dangerous gambit. It’s something that he himself said his entire political career would be dangerous and disastrous. Roll the tape. We’ve been rolling the greatest hits on our social media.

On Democrat lies about their own proposal to provide free health care to illegal aliens:

What they’re trying to do is roll back the reforms, the very important, necessary reforms that we included in the big beautiful bill, the Working Families Tax Cut. It’s had the desired effect. The CBO, which is the neutral arbiter supposedly that the Democrats cite all the time, came out three weeks ago and said it worked. It’s reducing premiums. Why? Because we got able-bodied young men off of Medicaid, they should have never been there in the first place. And we got illegal aliens off as well. Millions of people removed from the rolls which makes healthcare more affordable for everybody. They want to roll that back.

On Democrats voting to shut down the government despite repeatedly warning against them during the Biden Administration:

I hope the [government shutdown] is very short, because real Americans are going to suffer. It’s going to be a hardship for a lot of people. And Chuck Schumer holds all the cards because all he has to do is do what he’s done, by the way, 13 times during the previous four years of the Biden Administration. 13 times we avoided a shutdown. We were in the minority party many of those times and we voted and did the responsible, right thing to keep the government open. We’re asking Chuck Schumer to do the same, the same thing he did his entire career. He’s been here half my life. This is the first time ever he’s wanted to shut it down. And I’ll tell you why. Because Chuck Schumer’s in a political fight, he’s fighting for his political life. The last time he did the responsible thing, the far-Left came after him. AOC is going to challenge him.

House and Senate Leadership Host Press Conference Marking the Beginning of the Democrat-Led Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04)

WASHINGTON — Speaker Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune held a press conference this morning alongside House and Senate Leadership from the West Front of the U.S. Capitol to highlight the implications of the reckless Democrat-led government shutdown.

Watch Speaker Johnson’s full remarks here.

Below are Speaker Johnson’s remarks as delivered:

Today, America’s boys and girls will walk up to these doors, and they’ll see something different, a sign that says, “closed until further notice.” And that’s because, at midnight, the Democrats followed through on their threat to shut down the United States government.

As we speak here this morning, there are hundreds of thousands of federal workers who are getting their furlough notices. Nearly half of our civilian workforce is being sent home. These are hardworking Americans who work for our federal government. Our troops and our border patrol agents will have to go to work, but they’ll be working without pay.

Food assistance, veterans’ benefits, and vital support for women and children are all coming to a halt. Now, thankfully, President Trump is trying to mitigate the damage as much as possible. His administration is working to limit the harm to the American people.

But the longer this goes on, the more pain will be inflicted because it is inevitable when the government shuts down. The sad thing about it is that every single bit of this was entirely avoidable. Democrats could have worked with us in a bipartisan manner to avert this unnecessary and very harmful shutdown, but instead, they did something that is rather shocking to us.

They prioritized taxpayer funded benefits for illegal aliens over keeping the government open for American citizens. They themselves position that as a binary choice, and it’s patently absurd.

Listen to what the Democrats are demanding. They demanded in exchange for our simple, clean, 24-page bipartisan continued resolution, the same one that Chuck Schumer and the Democrats voted for just a few months back in March. In exchange for that, they rejected it, and they demanded something else. They wanted us to add over $1.5 trillion in new federal spending, paid for of course, by hardworking American taxpayers simply for funding the government at current Biden spending levels.

We are not going to do that. We can’t do that. We won’t do it. Almost two weeks ago, the House did our job. In the House, we passed a common sense, nonpartisan bill to keep the government open. Republicans did our job. We had one Democrat join us there. So, it was bipartisan, but every other Democrat in the House voted to shut the government down. And last night, 44 Democrats in the Senate did the same thing.

This is a clean resolution. It would simply buy Congress a few more weeks, seven weeks to finish the job. Why do we need that time? So that appropriators in both parties can finish their work. They’ve been restoring regular order. They’ve passed 12 separate bills out of committee in the House, and the Senate has done its work as well. Three bills of the 12 passed in each chamber.

They don’t line up exactly, so there’s a conference committee constituted for the first time in years that that’s happened. We just need more time because we ran out of clock, the end of the fiscal year, September 30.

This is very important to note. Democrats themselves have voted to pass a clean, bipartisan CR just like this 13 times in the last few years during the four years of the Biden administration. 13 times this happened, Republicans did the responsible thing, even when we were in the minority, to keep the government open. And today should be no different. There is nothing new in this legislation. There’s no poison pill. There are no partisan tricks. There are no gambits whatsoever. The only difference today is the man who is sitting in the Oval Office.

Rather than work with President Trump and Republicans to get this job done, as our party has done repeatedly in the same situation over the years, Democrats want to play political games with the lives and the livelihoods of Americans.

The simple truth is Democrats in Congress have dragged our country into another reckless shutdown to satisfy their far-left base. That is the truth. Whether or not the government remains open or reopens is entirely up to them.

There’s still time for Democrats to pass this clean, bipartisan bill that’s sitting before them. And we encourage our Democrat colleagues to do that. I certainly pray they’ll come to their senses soon and do the right and responsible thing.

The reason they will have one more opportunity today is because of the sound leadership that is being provided in the US Senate by our colleagues, who are standing here with us.

Rep. Adam Smith Statement on Republican Government Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Adam Smith (9th District of Washington)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Adam Smith (D-Wash.) released the following statement after Donald Trump and House Republicans shut down the federal government:

“At midnight last night, the federal government shut down. Let’s be clear that Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House, but once again, they have chosen chaos over governing.

“Instead of working across the aisle to keep the government open and protect the services Americans rely on, Donald Trump and House Republicans forced a reckless government shutdown. Their extreme partisan agenda threatens health care, housing, education, and veterans’ services—not just in Washington state, but across the country.

“This shutdown will create needless uncertainty for federal workers, disrupt critical services, and raise costs for families already struggling to make ends meet.

“My Democratic colleagues and I remain ready to work today to reopen the government with a bipartisan agreement that protects health care and delivers real solutions for the American people. It’s time for Republicans to put politics aside, come back to the table, and do their jobs.”

FACT SHEET: How the Republican Shutdown Hurts Washington’s Ninth District

Key Impacts on WA-09 Families

  • Health Care: Over 19,000 people in South King County rely on ACA premium tax credits and will see their health care costs skyrocket if Republicans let these tax credits expire.
  • Veterans: Thousands of veterans in Renton, Bellevue, and Tacoma risk delays in claims processing and disruptions to earned services.
  • Seniors & Families: Shutdowns delay Social Security checks and nutrition assistance programs, directly harming seniors and low-income families.

Timeline of the Tax Credit Crisis

  • August–September: Notices went out warning families that, without action, costs will rise.
  • October: Insurance plans finalize rates with CMS. Renewal notices will soon show skyrocketing premiums if Congress fails to act.
  • November: Open enrollment begins. Families will face impossible choices if costs climb.
  • December 31: Statutory expiration of enhanced premium tax credits—the same date Republicans already extended billionaire tax cuts

What This Means for Families

  • A family of four making $125,000: +$7,077/year in premiums: 329% increase.
  • A 60-year-old couple making $80,000: +$14,875/year in premiums: 237% increase.
  • A family of four making $64,000: +$2,571/year in premiums: 68% increase.

  • 23,780 people in WA-09 will lose access to health coverage because of Republican cuts to Medicaid in the Big Ugly Law.
  • 7,100 people in WA-09 will lose access to health coverage because of Republicans’ refusal to extend health care tax credits and Republicans’ new red tape.

The Bottom Line

  • The Republican shutdown threatens health care, veterans’ services, and basic economic stability in Washington’s Ninth District.
  • Every day of delay raises costs, denies care, and risks lives.
  • Rep. Adam Smith and House Democrats are ready to reopen government and protect families’ health care.

Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens on the Republican Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)

WASHINGTON, DC – Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens released the following statement on the Republicans’ government shutdown:

“My focus is, and always will be, on Michigan. What I hear every single day in Michigan is that families are stretched thin: groceries cost more, gas costs more, and health care costs more. And let’s be clear: a big reason costs are higher today is because of reckless policies from the Trump administration that stack the deck for big corporations and billionaires while leaving working families behind.

“My fight is to make sure Republicans reverse their proposed Medicaid cuts and ensure health care is affordable for working families in Michigan. I’m not interested in political games or distractions, I’m interested in results: lowering costs, protecting jobs, and delivering for Michigan.”

Jayapal Statement on Republican Government Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (7th District of Washington)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) released the following statement as government funding expired.

“Trump and Republicans control the White House, the House of Representatives, and the Senate, and they have officially chosen to shut down the government rather than deliver health care for the American people.

“Democrats have been in Washington, D.C., ready to negotiate a bill that cancels the horrific Republican cuts, lowers costs, and saves health care. Meanwhile, Speaker Johnson sent his Members home to do fancy fundraisers with billionaires and refused to negotiate.

“Once again, Republicans are choosing chaos over governing. Their shortsighted decisions will raise health care costs and devastate communities. American families will suffer.”

Jayapal’s office remains open during this Republican shutdown to serve her constituents. For more information on which federal services will be affected during a government shutdown, please visit this link
