Scalise: House Republicans Vote to Protect the Sanctity of Your Vote

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) joined Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.), House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil (R-Wis.), Congressman Chip Roy (R-Texas), and election integrity advocates in a press conference celebrating House passage of the SAVE America Act.

Leader Scalise’s remarks:“Thank you, Chip. I appreciate your leadership and all the people up here, and especially those friends from the outside world that have been focusing on this for a long time.“The House of Representatives, led by Republicans, came together tonight and said, we will protect the sanctity of your vote. It’s so important. You think about the military veteran who risked his life overseas to defend our freedoms, and he comes back home, and his vote will be stolen if somebody’s able to vote illegally. It happens. I come from a state where our elections commissioner was sent to federal prison. We all know it goes on, and how can you protect it?“Then, when you listen to the arguments by the Democrats, it was some of the most embarrassing, hypocritical debate you could hear. They’re talking about voter suppression. Well, let me tell you, and it’s been brought up, try getting on an airplane and flying home tonight without showing a picture ID. Try going into a bar without showing a picture ID. Try getting into the Democrat National Convention without showing an ID. They required it. The same Democrats that are saying things like ‘Jim Crow’ said you have to have an ID to get into their own convention because they know it’s common sense if you want to have a secure operation in anything, and elections are the most important franchise we have in America to protect democracy.“So, yes, we had a really important vote. Great to see one Democrat. Really perplexing why every other Democrat — you wanted to support voter fraud. That’s really what you’re supporting if you voted no tonight. You’re saying you’re okay with voter fraud, and that’s a disgrace. Look at states that have done this. Georgia, they said all those same things, by the way, in the state of Georgia, that passed a voter ID requirement. What happened in the next election after? You had actually higher voter participation…“So you will increase confidence amongst legal voters with this provision. And that’s why it’s so important that the Senate take this up and find a way to get it to President Trump’s desk. President Trump wants this bill on his desk so he can sign it into law and give even stronger protections to all Americans, over 80% who strongly want the protection of the sanctity of their vote.”

Speaker Johnson: The SAVE America Act is Not Controversial to Anyone Except Washington Democrats

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04)

WASHINGTON — Following House passage of the SAVE America Act, Speaker Johnson hosted a press conference alongside House Republican Leadership, House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil, Congressman Chip Roy, and election integrity advocates from around the country.

Speaker Johnson highlighted that all but one House Democrat voted against protecting the integrity of American elections and encouraged Senate Democrats to vote for this commonsense legislation supported by more than 80% of the American people.

“Proof of citizenship and photo ID to vote; everyone in the country understands the necessity of that and understands how simple it is and how important it is,” Speaker Johnson said. “And the only people that oppose it are people who want to cheat our system, who want to participate in our elections illegally unlawfully.”

Watch Speaker Johnson’s press conference remarks here.

Below are Speaker Johnson’s remarks as delivered:

Good evening, everybody. This was a very important night on the House Floor. House Republicans tonight stood with the overwhelming majority of Americans who demand secure elections. Standing with me are some of the champions of this cause in the House and some of the leaders outside our Chamber who’ve been working on this issue to ensure this integrity for quite some time. And this is a big achievement tonight by voting for the SAVE America Act.

House Republicans did exactly what the American people sent us here to do. It’s promises made, promises kept. Ensuring the integrity of elections is an essential issue. It’s essential to maintaining our constitutional republic. And everybody in this country seems to understand and agree to that. This is about a 90/10 issue in the polling because all that we’ve done tonight in this simple piece of legislation is apply common sense.

All this SAVE America Act does is it enhances the SAVE act, which you’ve already passed twice before, which says that you have to have proof of citizenship before you register to vote in federal elections. The law already provides for that, but we need to ensure that it’s enforced. And the second part of it, what we added tonight and what is part of the SAVE America Act is the second piece, the very commonsense requirement that you have a photo ID if you’re going to vote. So that’s it, that’s what the bill does. Proof of citizenship and photo ID to vote. Everyone in the country understands the necessity of that, understands how simple it is and how important it is. And the only people that oppose it are people who want to cheat our system, who want to participate in our elections illegally unlawfully.

And that’s not fair to the American people and the citizens of this country. And so, we had only one House Democrat participate with us tonight. This has become a bitter partisan fight in its madness to us. We can’t quite understand what the rationale is for opposing a free and fair election, but they’re going to have to explain this to the people, and they’re going to have a hard time doing that. Now, this bill, having passed the House, will now go to the Senate, and we are encouraging all of our Senate Republican colleagues who believe in this just as we do, to try to get this thing through the system to pass it there. And we’re hoping that some Democrats in the Senate will come to their senses and do the right thing for the people. Otherwise, they got a lot of explaining to do, as we say down in the South.

This is something that is overdue. It’s something that’s common sense. It’s something that comports with what the American people want. And there’s really just one question that would linger over all this. Now, will Senate Democrats continue to cater to their extreme left-wing base or are they going to finally join the overwhelming majority of Americans on this commonsense reform?

But I’ll tell you this, once again, Republicans have demonstrated that we are the party of common sense. We are the party that’s delivering exactly what the American people sent us here to do. And we will continue that.

Kelly votes for SAVE America Act to strengthen America's elections

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Kelly (R-PA)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) voted for the ‘‘Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act’,” also known as the ‘”SAVE America Act.” The legislation, which Rep. Kelly co-sponsored, would uphold and strengthen current law by permitting only U.S. citizens to vote in federal elections.

Kelly previously supported the SAVE Act when it passed the House in 2025. Today’s vote includes new language to strengthen voter ID requirements, which are supported by 83% of Americans.

“The SAVE Act ensures only American citizens are allowed to vote in American elections. The legislation also includes critical voter ID requires that will strengthen our elections across the board. Free and fair elections are a cornerstone of our democracy,” said Rep. Kelly.

BACKGROUND

The SAVE America Act would protect and preserve the right of American citizens to vote by:

  • Requiring individuals to present an eligible photo identification document before voting. (NEW)
  • Requiring states to obtain proof of citizenship – in person – when registering an individual to vote. (From original SAVE Act)
  • Requiring states to remove non-citizens from existing voter rolls. (From original SAVE Act)

Congressman Baird Votes for SAVE America Act, Supports Election Integrity

Washington, February 11, 2026

Today, Congressman Jim Baird (IN-04) released the following statement after voting for S. 1383, the SAVE America Act, to require proof of citizenship when registering to vote and to add voter ID requirements when voting in federal elections:

“I voted for the SAVE America Act to secure our elections by ensuring only American citizens vote in our federal elections. Upholding the integrity of our elections is vital to our great republic and preserving the institutions that make our nation the freest, most prosperous country in the world. This bill comes after the Biden Administration let over 10 million illegal immigrants into our country. Many Democrat-run states have created opportunities where illegal immigrants could illegally register to vote. In some cases, non-citizens can vote in local elections. A large majority of Americans support voter ID requirements to vote. This legislation should not be partisan. This is simply a common-sense measure to strengthen our election integrity and protect the will of the American people.”

Pressley Bills to Strengthen Eviction Protections, Help Families Reach Financial Stability Pass the House

Eviction Helpline Act Would Establish National Hotline for Eviction-Related Assistance; Helping More Families Save Act Would Modernize HUD’s Family Self-Sufficiency Program

Helping More Families Save Bill Text | Eviction Helpline Bill Text

WASHINGTON – This week, the House passed two bills championed by Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) that would strengthen eviction protections and help families receiving federal housing assistance achieve financial independence. The Eviction Helpline Act and Helping More Families Save Act passed the House as part of the bipartisan Housing for the 21st Century Act.

“The housing crisis is burdening folks across the country, and it is past time that our laws reflect the basic necessity of a safe, affordable, stable home,” said Congresswoman Pressley. “For those who know how destabilizing evictions can be, or who are burdened by the weight of financial inequity and insecurity, this legislation is for you.”

The Eviction Helpline Act would require the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to establish and promote a national hotline so that households can receive access to the eviction-related assistance they need and get help even before an eviction is filed. Bill text is accessible here.

The Helping More Families Save Act would modernize and expand HUD’s Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program for low-income families and empower them to achieve financial stability through financial literacy, job training, and childcare. Bill text is available here.

Congresswoman Pressley discussed these two bills during the Committee’s markup of the 21st Century Housing Act, citing the eviction crisis in towns like Randolph in the Massachusetts 7th Congressional District and the success of the Family Self-Sufficiency Program in Massachusetts.

Last month, Rep. Pressley, alongside Congresswomen Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03) and Ilhan Omar (MN-05) held the Congressional Progressive Caucus’ (CPC) Lowering Costs Taskforce’s first shadow hearing, titled “Building the New American Dream: Lowering Housing Costs for All.” The shadow hearing brought together housing experts and CPC Members to advance solutions to lower costs by building more affordable, public, and market-rate housing; cracking down on corporate and landlord greed; and expanding federal assistance for low-income families.

As a Member of the Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance of the House Financial Services Committee (FSC), Rep. Pressley has consistently advocated for policies that affirm housing as a human right and center the dignity and humanity of all people.

  • In November 2025, Rep. Pressley joined House Financial Services Committee Ranking Member Maxine Waters (CA-35) and 52 colleagues in sending a letter to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner, calling on him to rescind a recent HUD decision to slash essential Continuum of Care (CoC) program funding.

Congresswoman Norma Torres Fights to Defend the Right to Vote, Introduces Amendments to Protect Voters from SAVE Act Restrictions

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Norma Torres (35th District of California)

February 11, 2026

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Norma Torres (CA-35) has been leading the fight all week to defend Americans’ fundamental right to vote and speaking out in hearings, taking to the House floor, and introducing three key amendments to the Republican-led SAVE America Act to stop provisions that would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters. From challenging the bill’s false claims about election security to offering concrete fixes to protect mail ballot access and prevent costly proof-of-citizenship requirements, Rep. Torres has used every tool available to push back against Republican attempts to rig our democracy and undermine free and fair elections.

The SAVE America Act, championed by House Republicans, would impose sweeping new proof of citizenship requirements that voting rights advocates warn would create unnecessary barriers to the ballot box and suppress the vote of eligible American citizens. In response, Congresswoman Torres introduced amendments to protect mail-in voters, ensure no American pays to exercise their right to vote, and shield donor states from punitive mandates.

“Republicans can call it whatever they want, but the SAVE Act is about making it harder for eligible Americans to vote,” said Congresswoman Torres. “If you truly care about election integrity, you should also care about protecting access to the ballot. My amendments would preserve fairness, access, and make sure no one is priced out of their constitutional rights.”

Torres Amendments to the SAVE Act include:

1. Mail Ballot Amendment
Strikes the provision that creates burdensome identification requirements for mail-in ballots, protecting voters who rely on vote-by-mail systems that are already secure and widely used across the country.

2. Cost Amendment
Clarifies that obtaining any form of acceptable proof of citizenship under the bill must come at no cost to U.S. citizens. The amendment would either waive passport fees or require the federal government to provide an alternative form of identification that proves citizenship at no charge.

3. Donor State Amendment
Exempts donor states from the bill’s new and burdensome requirements, preventing states that already contribute more federal revenue than they receive from being penalized with costly, unfunded mandates.

“States that already carry more than their fair share should not be saddled with additional bureaucratic burdens,” Torres said. “This amendment protects hardworking taxpayers from another unfunded mandate disguised as election reform.”

Congresswoman Torres emphasized that there is no evidence of widespread non-citizen voting and that election officials already verify voter eligibility using state and federal data systems.

“This is about power,” Torres concluded. “When politicians cannot win voters over, they try to silence them. I will continue fighting to protect every American’s right to participate in our democracy.”

DelBene on Trump Tariff Vote: “Republicans knew all along these tariffs were hurting their constituents”

DelBene on Trump Tariff Vote: “Republicans knew all along these tariffs were hurting their constituents”

Washington, D.C., February 11, 2026

Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the following statement on the successful House vote to repeal Trump’s sweeping tariffs on Canada.

“Today’s vote proves that Republicans knew all along that Trump’s tariffs were hurting their constituents but were too afraid to stand up to him. Republicans tried to hide for nearly a year from taking this vote, but Democrats were finally able to break Speaker Johnson’s blockade. No more hiding!

“This is the first vote to restore Congressional authority and repeal Trump’s tariffs. We will keep holding Republicans accountable for raising prices on families and fighting to end Trump’s senseless trade war. The Senate must now take up this measure.”

Background

  • DelBene led the initial resolution to force the vote on Trump’s Canada and Mexico tariffs. Republicans used procedural mechanisms to prevent the resolutions from being called up for a vote for nearly a year.
  • She introduced legislation to make clear that the President must come to Congress before putting sweeping tariffs in place using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
  • ICYMI: DelBene spoke on the House floor yesterday, slamming Republicans for trying to hide from this vote yet again.

Newhouse Supports Bill Requiring Proof of Citizenship and Identification to Vote

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Dan Newhouse (4th District of Washington)

Headline: Newhouse Supports Bill Requiring Proof of Citizenship and Identification to Vote

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (WA-04) released the following statement upon House passage of S. 1383, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act to require proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo identification to vote in federal elections.

“Election law is a complicated and intricate issue. While the Constitution grants states the power to conduct elections, the federal government has a responsibility to safeguard the integrity of federal elections,” said Rep. Newhouse. “Requiring identification and proof of citizenship to vote ensures that only American citizens are participating in our democratic process. I oppose calls to ‘nationalize’ our elections but support common-sense reforms to make our elections more secure.”

This legislation requires individuals registering to vote in federal elections to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship at the time of registration. It prohibits states from accepting or processing a federal voter registration application without such proof, while requiring states to establish an alternative process allowing applicants to submit other evidence to demonstrate citizenship.

It also mandates that states take ongoing steps to ensure that only U.S. citizens remain on federal voter rolls, including implementing programs to identify and remove non-citizens using information from specified data sources.

Newhouse Votes to Eliminate Tariffs on Canada

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Dan Newhouse (4th District of Washington)

Headline: Newhouse Votes to Eliminate Tariffs on Canada

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (WA-04) released the following statement upon House passage of H.J. Res. 72 to end the emergency declaration and tariffs on Canada from Executive Order 14193. The resolution passed the House with a bipartisan vote of 219-211.

“Over the last few years, I have been a staunch advocate in the fight to end the fentanyl crisis. The reality is the overwhelming majority of illicit drugs have come through the Southern Border, which thanks to the Trump Administration, is effectively closed. Washington State’s economy is heavily intertwined with that of our neighbors to the North. Canada is our state’s second largest export market with billions of dollars in Washington commodities being sold there every year. Our agricultural producers’ input and equipment prices have continued to climb, and Canada’s reciprocal tariffs and actions have harmed our state’s beer, wine, and spirits industry.

Equally important is the fact that Congress should not tie its own hands on our Constitutional authority to levy tariffs. While I understand the President’s approach to utilize tariffs as leverage to secure more trade deals, the fact of the matter remains the tariffs on Canada have harmed Washingtonians. Congress must play a strong role in the upcoming USMCA review to strengthening the trade deal to the benefits of American farmers, businesses, and consumers.”

President Trump signed Executive Order 14193 on February 1, 2025, declaring an emergency over the flow of fentanyl through the Northern Border. Concurrently, the President placed ad valorem tariffs on Canadian products, alleging the country had not adequately contributed to Northern Border security. Canada has since placed reciprocal tariffs on U.S. products.

Carter bill securing U.S. undersea cables passes House

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Earl L Buddy Carter (GA-01)

Headline: Carter bill securing U.S. undersea cables passes House

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) and Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) today celebrated the House of Representatives passing their Undersea Cable Protection Act, a bill strengthening national security and global connectivity by safeguarding the United States’ submarine cable infrastructure.

The bill, which now heads to the Senate, accomplishes these goals by ensuring diversity of routes for national security, eliminating duplicative permitting laws, and promoting rather than delaying the deployment and maintenance of submarine cables. It also preserves existing local, state, and federal permitting rules and protects national marine sanctuaries.

“By passing this bill, we are advancing President Trump’s mandate to strengthen national security and cut burdensome red tape. Streamlining and improving the permitting processes behind our submarine cable infrastructure will help advance global connectivity and speed up deployment and maintenance, ensuring our cables are not subject to attacks from hostile foreign nations such as China,”
said Rep. Carter.

“Undersea networks are a major component of global connectivity and our digital economy,”
said Senator Blackburn. “The Undersea Cable Protection Act would ensure that undersea cables can be built and preserved without duplicative, burdensome, and unnecessary federal regulations. I’m thrilled to see this pass the House, and I’m looking forward to its passage in the Senate, which will deliver a critical win for America’s digital infrastructure, national security, and economic competitiveness.”

“Undersea cables carry our global internet traffic and digital communications, serving as a critical piece of infrastructure that keeps us connected to the world. Because of burdensome federal regulations that impose undue burdens on projects, we haven’t laid new cables in marine sanctuaries in more than 20 years. Rep. Carter’s bill helps cut red tape, ensuring the United States can meet future technological demands,” said House Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman (R-AR)
