Rep. Mike Kelly statement on government shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) issued this statement after Senate Democrats failed to join House and Senate Republicans to pass a short-term spending bill that would avoid a government shutdown.

Rep. Kelly and House Republicans passed the spending bill on September 19.

“The spending bill passed by House Republicans last month is a clean, responsible short-term solution — without strings attached — to keep the government’s lights on and its doors open,” said Rep. Kelly. “Now, Senate Democrats have repeatedly rejected our legislation and are demanding to include more than $1 trillion in new spending. Make no mistake — The Schumer Shutdown could have been avoided.”

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Representative Austin Scott (GA-08) today released the following statement regarding the Democrat-Forced Government Shutdown:

House Republicans did our job 13 days ago when we passed a clean continuing resolution to keep the government funded. Senate Democrats have made it clear that they are willing to risk the jobs and essential programs of Americans for no reason other than their hatred of President Trump.

House Republicans will continue to fight this political malpractice every step of the way,” said Rep. Scott.

Brownley Statement on Republican Shutdown of the Federal Government

Source: United States House of Representatives – Julia Brownley (D-CA)

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA) issued the following statement regarding the shutdown of the federal government. Instead of working with Democrats to protect Americans’ access to affordable health care, President Trump and the Republican majority in Congress failed to pass a responsible funding plan to keep the government open. Their refusal to negotiate a fair, bipartisan solution has left most federal government functions unfunded, triggering a shutdown that halts critical government services for Americans and halts pay for millions of families, workers, and communities across the country.

“Today, for the third time under the Trump administration and a Republican-controlled Congress, the federal government has entered a shutdown, forcing millions of Americans to pay the price for their inaction.

“Republicans control the House, Senate, and the White House – the three bodies necessary to fund the government. Instead of negotiating with Democrats to find common ground, as Democrats have done when they held the majority, House Republicans have chosen to cancel votes, skip town, and shut down federal agencies.

“This is a crisis of their own making, driven by political theater rather than concern for the health, safety, and security of the American people. Their actions are reckless, morally indefensible, and they put billionaires above the lives of working families. My Democratic colleagues and I will not be complicit in their failure.

“Democrats have consistently offered a fair, bipartisan path forward: a spending plan that strengthens health care, invests in public health, and helps families make ends meet. Yet the Republican majority has ignored every opportunity to address the healthcare crisis their ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ created, opting instead to shut down the government.

“House Democrats remain ready to negotiate a fair, bipartisan spending bill, but we will not compromise when it comes to protecting the healthcare of the American people and lowering everyday costs.

“I will continue doing everything possible to bring Congressional Republicans back to the negotiating table and reopen the federal government immediately. We cannot allow extremists to thrust our economy into chaos, plunge millions of Americans into unemployment and poverty, and deprive children and our most vulnerable populations of vital services and resources. Our focus must be on solutions that strengthen health care, lower costs, and put working families first.”

Rep. Mike Levin’s Statement on the Republican-Led Government Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Levin (CA-49)

October 01, 2025

Washington, D.C.—Tonight, Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49) released the following statement regarding the Republican-led government shutdown that started at midnight:

“The government is now shut down because Congressional Republicans and President Trump chose to let it close. Federal workers will miss paychecks, services people rely on will be delayed, and families will feel the strain in their daily lives.

“Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House. They refused to negotiate with Democrats on a bipartisan path forward. Instead, Speaker Johnson sent House Republicans home without a deal, and President Trump resorted to mean-spirited social media posts instead of serious leadership. We are in this situation because of their choices.

“I am ready to work across the aisle to reopen the government, protect Americans’ health care, and prevent families in our community from facing higher premiums. I will work with anyone serious about ending this shutdown and getting us back to serving the people.”

LEADER JEFFRIES ON GOOD MORNING AMERICA: “REPUBLICANS HAVE SHUT THE GOVERNMENT DOWN BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT TO PROVIDE HEALTHCARE TO WORKING-CLASS AMERICANS”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District of New York)

Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America where he emphasized that Democrats are ready to find a bipartisan agreement that funds the government in a way that improves the quality of life and protects the healthcare of the American people.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Let’s turn now to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Mr. Leader, your response, first of all, to what the Speaker said there about the President’s comments on the ‘enemy within’ and using American cities to train the military?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, good morning George. It was a deeply disturbing statement that the President made. We need presidential leadership that brings people together as opposed to tearing us apart. And certainly it’s the case that not a single American should ever be viewed as the enemy within or potentially as target practice for the American military, which is why the American people have rejected the deployment and occupation of American cities and towns and counties with American military troops. We have the finest military in the world, and they should be used to keep us safe from external enemies.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: You also heard the Speaker say that the Democrats want to fund healthcare for illegal aliens, illegal immigrants, by trying to reverse what was in the President’s domestic spending bill earlier this year. Your response?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Donald Trump and Republicans have shut the government down because they don’t want to provide healthcare to working-class Americans. Federal law prohibits the use of Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and the Affordable Care Act to provide health insurance in any way, shape or form to undocumented immigrants. Period. Full stop. That’s the law. And Democrats aren’t trying to change that. What we are trying to do is negotiate a bipartisan agreement that actually brings the two parties together and funds the government in a way that improves the quality of life of the American people.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: It doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen anytime soon. Are you worried the Democrats are going to get blamed for the shutdown and the unity is going to erode? Already, two Democratic Senators and Angus King, the Independent Senator from Maine who votes with the Democrats, already voted with the GOP once.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, Democrats are united in our resolve to make sure that we cancel the cuts, lower the cost, and save healthcare for the American people. We’re in the midst of an incredible crisis, a healthcare crisis that Republicans have caused. Already this year, the largest cut to Medicaid in American history, triggering the possibility of a $536 billion cut to Medicare as a result of the One Big Ugly Bill that Republicans passed if we don’t act by the end of the year. In the next few days, more than 20 million Americans are going to experience notices that will indicate that their premiums and co-pays and deductibles are about to skyrocket, bankrupting many Americans or preventing them from being able to get access to the healthcare that they need. And in the midst of all of this, Republicans have effectively canceled medical research. And because of the One Big Ugly Bill, we know hospitals and nursing homes and community-based health centers are closing all across America, including many rural communities that Republicans so often represent all across America. And they could care less at the medical and healthcare crisis that they have caused.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Mr. Leader, thanks for your time this morning.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Thank you.

DeGette Statement on Republican-Led Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Diana DeGette (First District of Colorado)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Diana DeGette (CO-01) released the following statement after Republicans in Congress shut the government down.

“Last night, Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans, who control all of Washington, shut the government down because they refuse to work with Democrats to ensure that all Americans have affordable health care. On the day of the shutdown, House Republicans weren’t even in Washington. That is a gross abdication of responsibility.

“Now, Donald Trump is pledging to be as cruel as possible. He and Russ Vought are going to try to use their shutdown to eviscerate the federal government and make it harder for Americans to get the benefits they deserve, access our beautiful national parks, and safely and securely travel.

“The health of the American people demands that Republicans come back to the table to find a path forward. I’m ready to work.”

Nadler Statement on Trump Administration Freezing $18 Billion in NYC Infrastructure Funds

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Jerrold Nadler (10th District of New York)

Nadler Statement on Trump Administration Freezing $18 Billion in NYC Infrastructure Funds

New York, NY, October 1, 2025

Today, Representative Jerrold Nadler (NY-12) released the following statement on the Trump administration freezing $18 billion for Hudson tunnel and Second Avenue subway projects:

“The Trump Administration is shamefully freezing funding for two of the most critical infrastructure projects in the nation because Democrats refused to rubber-stamp a plan that does nothing to stop Americans’ health insurance premiums from doubling.

These aren’t just local transportation projects. This unprecedented political retribution could put our nation’s entire economy at risk. Experts have long warned that a Hudson Tunnel failure could trigger a regional recession that drags down the entire U.S. economy.

The freeze will immediately hurt American families, Republicans and Democrats alike. More than 150,000 good-paying American jobs are on the line, and more than 300,000 commuters a day, of every political stripe, depend on these projects to keep the region moving.

It should concern every American that the Trump Administration is willing to harm working families and our nation’s economy to punish Democrats.

This freeze must be reversed immediately.”

REP LIEU SLAMS TRUMP SHUTDOWN, CALLS ON REPUBLICANS TO SAVE HEALTHCARE

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Ted Lieu (33 District of California)

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after Donald Trump and House Republicans shut down the federal government.

“Americans are already crushed under the stress of inflation and a weak economy. Now add to that the biggest increase in health insurance costs in 15 years. And where are Republicans? On vacation. Republicans chose to shut the government down instead of saving health care for Americans and voting to release the Epstein files.

“Republicans control the White House, the House, and the Senate. Their decision to not negotiate and to not bring Members back for a vote is why our country is here. The Trump shutdown is on them. In what other line of work could you blow off a critical deadline and expect to keep your job? Why do Republicans think they can consistently act in the best interest of their billionaire friends and ignore the needs of hardworking Americans?

“Democrats are in DC, ready to work. Republicans: show up and do your jobs! It’s insanity.

“Because Republicans control every branch of government, they could stop the shutdown today. Senate Republicans can change their stupid and arcane rules to pass things on the floor with a majority vote, just like they did a few weeks ago to push through Trump’s radical nominees. The fact that Senate Republicans changed their rules a few weeks ago but are not doing so now shows that Republicans want this shutdown.”

In CA-36, 36,000 people in CA-36 will see their health care costs rise if Republicans let critical tax credits expire. For a 60-year-old couple earning $82,800 a year, their annual premium will rise by $13,783. For a family of four earning $129,800 a year, their annual premiums will rise by $6,174. In CA-36, 27,765 people will lose health coverage because of Republican cuts to Medicaid (also known in California as Medi-Cal) in the Big Ugly Law and their plot to gut the Affordable Care Act.
