Rep. Adam Smith Statement on Republican Government Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Adam Smith (9th District of Washington)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Adam Smith (D-Wash.) released the following statement after Donald Trump and House Republicans shut down the federal government:

“At midnight last night, the federal government shut down. Let’s be clear that Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House, but once again, they have chosen chaos over governing.

“Instead of working across the aisle to keep the government open and protect the services Americans rely on, Donald Trump and House Republicans forced a reckless government shutdown. Their extreme partisan agenda threatens health care, housing, education, and veterans’ services—not just in Washington state, but across the country.

“This shutdown will create needless uncertainty for federal workers, disrupt critical services, and raise costs for families already struggling to make ends meet.

“My Democratic colleagues and I remain ready to work today to reopen the government with a bipartisan agreement that protects health care and delivers real solutions for the American people. It’s time for Republicans to put politics aside, come back to the table, and do their jobs.”

FACT SHEET: How the Republican Shutdown Hurts Washington’s Ninth District

Key Impacts on WA-09 Families

  • Health Care: Over 19,000 people in South King County rely on ACA premium tax credits and will see their health care costs skyrocket if Republicans let these tax credits expire.
  • Veterans: Thousands of veterans in Renton, Bellevue, and Tacoma risk delays in claims processing and disruptions to earned services.
  • Seniors & Families: Shutdowns delay Social Security checks and nutrition assistance programs, directly harming seniors and low-income families.
  • Federal Workforce: Nearly 78,252 federal workers in Washington state face furloughs or missed paychecks, straining household budgets and weakening local economies.

Timeline of the Tax Credit Crisis

  • August–September: Notices went out warning families that, without action, costs will rise.
  • October: Insurance plans finalize rates with CMS. Renewal notices will soon show skyrocketing premiums if Congress fails to act.
  • November: Open enrollment begins. Families will face impossible choices if costs climb.
  • December 31: Statutory expiration of enhanced premium tax credits—the same date Republicans already extended billionaire tax cuts

What This Means for Families

  • A family of four making $125,000: +$7,077/year in premiums: 329% increase.
  • A 60-year-old couple making $80,000: +$14,875/year in premiums: 237% increase.
  • A family of four making $64,000: +$2,571/year in premiums: 68% increase.
  • 19,000 people in WA-09 will see their health care costs rise if Republicans let critical tax credits expire.
  • 30,880 people will lose health coverage because of Republican cuts to Medicaid (also known in Washington as Apple Health) in the Big Ugly Law and their plot to gut the Affordable Care Act.
  • 23,780 people in WA-09 will lose access to health coverage because of Republican cuts to Medicaid in the Big Ugly Law.
  • 7,100 people in WA-09 will lose access to health coverage because of Republicans’ refusal to extend health care tax credits and Republicans’ new red tape.

The Bottom Line

  • The Republican shutdown threatens health care, veterans’ services, and basic economic stability in Washington’s Ninth District.
  • Every day of delay raises costs, denies care, and risks lives.
  • Rep. Adam Smith and House Democrats are ready to reopen government and protect families’ health care.

Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens on the Republican Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)

WASHINGTON, DC – Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens released the following statement on the Republicans’ government shutdown:

“My focus is, and always will be, on Michigan. What I hear every single day in Michigan is that families are stretched thin: groceries cost more, gas costs more, and health care costs more. And let’s be clear: a big reason costs are higher today is because of reckless policies from the Trump administration that stack the deck for big corporations and billionaires while leaving working families behind.

“My fight is to make sure Republicans reverse their proposed Medicaid cuts and ensure health care is affordable for working families in Michigan. I’m not interested in political games or distractions, I’m interested in results: lowering costs, protecting jobs, and delivering for Michigan.”

Jayapal Statement on Republican Government Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (7th District of Washington)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) released the following statement as government funding expired.

“Trump and Republicans control the White House, the House of Representatives, and the Senate, and they have officially chosen to shut down the government rather than deliver health care for the American people.

“Democrats have been in Washington, D.C., ready to negotiate a bill that cancels the horrific Republican cuts, lowers costs, and saves health care. Meanwhile, Speaker Johnson sent his Members home to do fancy fundraisers with billionaires and refused to negotiate.

“Once again, Republicans are choosing chaos over governing. Their shortsighted decisions will raise health care costs and devastate communities. American families will suffer.”

Jayapal’s office remains open during this Republican shutdown to serve her constituents. For more information on which federal services will be affected during a government shutdown, please visit this link

Jayapal, Raskin Oppose Policy Adding Red Tape to Visa Process

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (7th District of Washington)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representatives Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Immigration, Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, and Jamie Raskin (MD-08), Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee, are submitting formal opposition to a new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) rule that would add further bureaucratic hurdles to visa processing for students, exchange visitors, and media personnel.

“DHS’s proposal to constrain the timeframe of admission for students, exchange visitors, and members of the media to a fixed period of time is the latest in a series of unwarranted policy changes that have undermined our role as a leader in international education, and harmed universities, businesses, and U.S. students that depend on foreign student enrollment,” wrote the Members. “We cannot condone the erosion of our platforms of learning, culture, and expression—particularly when there is no basis to do so.”

For decades, DHS’s procedure for temporary admission of foreign students, exchange visitors, and media representatives has been done as “duration of status” – allowing individuals to be admitted, after vetting, for a period of time that complies with the terms and conditions of their temporary visas. For instance, a visa for a foreign student would fit the duration of the school dates at their university, ensuring that students can finish their degrees. DHS is proposing a rule to change these visas to be on an arbitrary timeline.

This change would create confusion and strain on visitors to this country, deterring the best and brightest from choosing to study at American universities and diminishing our ability to compete on the international stage. It would also impose significant burdens on U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), an agency that already has a backlog of 11.3 million cases.

Bilirakis Directs Pay to Be Withheld During Government Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Gus Bilirakis (FL-12)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Gus Bilirakis (FL-12) today announced that he has formally requested the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to withhold his congressional pay for the duration of the ongoing government shutdown.

Government shutdowns are costly, disruptive, and ultimately unproductive,” said Congressman Bilirakis. It is unacceptable for Members of Congress to receive a paycheck while dedicated federal workers – including members of our Armed Services- go without. That’s why I’ve instructed the CAO to withhold my salary for the full length of the shutdown I strongly urge my colleagues in the Senate to stop playing partisan politics and pass the clean Continuing Resolution we sent them. We must immediately reopen the government and return to fulfilling our responsibilities to the American people.”

Estes Withholds Pay During Democrat-Induced Shutdown

Washington, October 1, 2025

U.S. Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas) announced his request to have his congressional salary withheld due to the government shutdown, caused by Senator Chuck Schumer (D-New York) and his Democrat colleagues. The announcement follows Democrats’ refusal to vote for the same clean funding bill they supported during the previous administration. During the last government shutdown in 2019, Representative Estes also requested his salary be withheld.

The full letter can be found below.

Dear Mrs. Szpindor,

I have been informed that despite a lapse of appropriations and current government shutdown, Members of Congress will continue receiving their salary.

Please withhold my net pay until an appropriations agreement has taken effect.

Sincerely,

Estes Op-ed Celebrates 90 Years of Social Security and Explores How to Strengthen the Agency

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas)

U.S. Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas) published an op-ed in the Washington Examiner about the 90th anniversary of Social Security, implementing the Social Security Fairness Act, and how to improve this vital program.

Read the op-ed here or below.

Fixing Social Security: From Fairness Act to Faster Benefits

The United States observed the 90th anniversary of the Social Security Act in August. This monumental piece of legislation has provided a supplemental income to retirees in America for decades. Millions of Americans have paid into the system their entire working lives and received the benefits they earned. As Chairman of the Social Security Subcommittee on the House Ways and Means Committee, I’m committed to protecting and strengthening one of America’s most vital programs for future generations. President Donald Trump shares my commitment.

I know how Social Security has provided a lifeline of economic security to millions of hardworking retirees, disabled workers, and their families – folks in Kansas and across the nation. President Trump does too. He shared his commitment to America to continue “defending Social Security” and “taking care of our own workers, families, seniors and citizens first.”

Last year, Congress passed the Social Security Fairness Act which fixes a loophole that prevented police officers, firefighters and teachers from receiving their full Social Security benefits. Earlier this year, the Trump Administration began paying Social Security beneficiaries the retroactive payments they were owed ahead of schedule, after Chairman Jason Smith (R-Missouri) and I urged the administration to implement the Social Security Fairness Act.

Furthermore, the Trump administration is making sure the Social Security Administration (SSA) is working efficiently to provide the people with the benefits they deserve. Implementing the Social Security Fairness Act was a great start.

Since then, SSA customer service assistance has increased handling calls, lowered the phone call wait time, decreased field office wait times, all while increasing scheduled appointments compared to last year under the Biden administration. There is still much work to do – as my office in Wichita continues to assist Kansans with Social Security cases – but this is moving in a positive direction.

We need to do all we can to administer Social Security benefits in the most efficient manner possible, because the program is quickly going insolvent. There are not enough workers paying into the system to support retirees.

In June, the Social Security Board of Trustees released its 2025 report, which confirmed the concern of insolvency that I’ve been worried about for years. Republicans and Democrats in Congress need to work together in a bipartisan manner to address these issues together for the benefit of everyone.

In September, I had the chance to meet with SSA Commissioner Frank Bisignano in my district in Kansas. We toured the Social Security field office in Wichita and discussed the need for customer service improvements. We agreed there are ways for Congress and the SSA to work together to enhance services and protect benefits for Kansans and all Americans.

My colleagues and I must work together to keep the benefits efficiently and correctly disbursed and the Social Security program functional. As Chairman of the Social Security Subcommittee, I promise to keep fighting for Americans – like the ones in my district in Kansas – who rely on Social Security benefits today and in the future.

Sherrill Slams Republican Government Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11)

WASHINGTON, DC — Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement after Donald Trump and Washington Republicans sent the federal government into a total shutdown:

“Washington Republicans have once again shown they’re willing to turn their backs on the American people in order to blindly follow Donald Trump’s demands. Instead of working with Democrats to lower costs, protect health care, and support working people, Washington Republicans bent the knee to Donald Trump, shutting down the government in the process.

“New Jersey families and the American people deserve far better. Washington Republicans must come to the table immediately to find a bipartisan consensus on a plan that reopens the government, keeps costs from rising even higher, and extends critical healthcare tax credits that working families rely on.”

Carbajal Statement on Republican-led Government Shutdown

Carbajal Statement on Republican-led Government Shutdown

Washington, October 1, 2025

Today, U.S. Representative Salud Carbajal (D-CA-24) issued the statement below on the Republican-led government shutdown.

“As of today, the federal government is shut down because Donald Trump and Republicans chose chaos over governing. Democrats came ready to negotiate a bipartisan deal to keep the government open and lower health care costs, but Trump and Republicans refused,” said Rep. Carbajal. “Now, service members are working without pay, civil servants face uncertainty, and families across the Central Coast are left wondering how this dysfunction will impact their lives. Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House — this shutdown is their mess. I will keep fighting for the bipartisan funding solution our country deserves.”

Democrats in both the House and Senate have argued that any stopgap funding bill needs to protect the expanded tax credit subsidies for health insurance purchased through Affordable Care Act (ACA) exchanges. Those tax credits and the eligibility for them were expanded by Democrats in 2021 under then-President Biden and are scheduled to expire at the end of December. If the tax credits are not protected in a stopgap bill, millions of Americans could lose their health insurance.

Congressman Valadao Releases Statement on Government Shutdown

A shutdown doesn’t benefit anyone, and it’s past time for Democrats to stop with the reckless games, get serious about governing, and put the American people first.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman David Valadao (CA-22) issued the following statement on the federal government shutdown.

“As a member of the House Committee on Appropriations, I’ve worked hard to advance all 12 funding bills and voted for a clean, non-partisan extension of funding to keep the government open while Congress works toward a long-term solution,” said Congressman Valadao. “Unfortunately, Congressional Democrats refused to act responsibly and instead forced a shutdown—wasting taxpayer dollars, putting critical programs at risk, and hurting families across the country just to score political points. A shutdown doesn’t benefit anyone, and it’s past time for Democrats to stop with the reckless games, get serious about governing, and put the American people first.”
