Republicans Side with Billionaires and Big Corporations, Democrats Fight for Hardworking Americans

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steny H Hoyer (MD-05)

WASHINGTON — During today’s House Appropriations Committee markup of the 2026 Financial Services and General Government funding bill, House Democrats highlighted how the bill makes the cost-of-living crisis worse, sides with billionaires and big corporations, and makes communities less safe.

This bill:

  •  Promotes corruption by billionaires and large corporations by decimating tax enforcement and drastically underfunding the corporate watchdog that ensures markets are fair and protects investors from bad actors.
  • Leaves consumers vulnerable to scams and predatory junk fees by cutting funding for the Federal Trade Commission, allowing greedy corporations to continue price gouging. These changes increase the cost of living for working class, middle class, and vulnerable Americans.
  • Enables individuals to sell dangerous products and puts children at risk by cutting resources for the Consumer Product Safety Commission and including harmful extreme policies that side with big corporations over working Americans.
  • Makes our elections less secure by cutting the funding for the Election Assistance Commission.
  • Includes over 60 new, problematic, or pointless policy riders on topics such as the IRS Free File, consumer safety, and abortion. Additionally, instead of addressing the issues that matter most to the American people, House Republicans are micromanaging the District of Columbia’s health and traffic laws.

“This bill conveys the same message Republicans have been sending to the American people for years: ‘you’re on your own.’ It advances Trump’s occupation of Washington DC, makes it easier for millionaires and billionaires to get out of paying the taxes they legally owe, cuts funding for agencies that protect against financial crimes, and continues the Trump Administration’s effort to traumatize federal workers,” Financial Services Appropriations Subcommittee Ranking Member Steny Hoyer (D-MD-05) said. “Meanwhile, Republicans sit on their hands as Trump and OMB Director Russell Vought try to turn the Appropriations Committee – and the entire Congress – into an irrelevant rubber stamp with their illegal pocket rescissions and impoundments.”

Congressman Hoyer’s full remarks are here.

“Americans are struggling with rising costs of everyday necessities. They live paycheck to paycheck. But the President and Republicans are not laser-focused on the cost-of-living crisis. In fact, with their 2026 Financial Services funding bill, House Republicans are making it worse,” Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) said. “This bill is meant to protect everyday American consumers, secure our elections, and make our economy work for hardworking people. Instead, Republicans have managed to keep resources for Russ Vought’s Office of Management and Budget steady and allow him to continue stealing from Americans without any check on his power, while cutting programs that keep children safe and protect senior citizens from scammers. This bill will hurt Americans while letting the biggest corporations price gouge and pay no taxes.”

Congresswoman DeLauro’s full remarks are here.

Democrats successfully fought to allow Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, also known as “Dreamers,” to work in the federal government through an amendment from Congressman Pete Aguilar (D-CA-33). A similar amendment offered by Congressman Aguilar was also included in the Legislative Branch funding bill, allowing DACA recipients to work in the Legislative Branch.

During today’s markup, Democrats fought to:

  • Create an Office of Inspector General of the Office of Management and Budget, similar to the legislative measure passed twice on a bipartisan basis by the House in the 117th Congress including in the fiscal year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act.
  • Prohibit the use of federal funds to financially benefit the President of the United States.
  • Protect our elections by reversing House Republican cuts to Election Assistance Commission grants.
  • Eliminate House Republicans’ rider that would prevent Americans from having the option of filing their taxes for free.
  • Restore Internal Revenue Service (IRS) funding to ensure billionaires, big corporations, and tax cheats pay taxes.
  • Strike Republican attacks on women’s health, including access to abortion.
  • Force the release of the Epstein files.

House Republicans rejected these efforts to lower costs, protect children and families, and ensure billionaires and big corporations pay the taxes they owe.

Haley Stevens and Tim Burchett Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Expand Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer in Young People

MI Congresswoman Haley Stevens Leads Bipartisan National Effort as Colorectal Cancer Rates Surge in Younger Americans

Washington D.C. – Today, U.S. Representatives Haley Stevens (D-MI) and Tim Burchett (R-TN) introduced the Colorectal Cancer Early Detection Act, bipartisan legislation to expand awareness, screening, and early detection of colorectal cancer among individuals under 45. Colorectal cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death for men under 50, second for women under 50, and is one of the fastest-growing cancers in Americans under 50. Cases among Americans ages 20 to 39 are projected to increase by 90 percent by 2030.

“Colorectal cancer does not discriminate by age or party. Too many families are losing loved ones far too young,” said Rep. Stevens. “This bill is about Democrats and Republicans coming together to save lives by expanding access to early detection and prevention efforts. Here in Michigan, where we’ve seen invasive colorectal cancer rates among residents under 50 nearly double since the 1980s, we know this is an urgent challenge. Families in our state, and across the nation, deserve the tools and resources to catch this disease early.”

“It is an honor to co-lead the Colorectal Cancer Early Detection Act with Congresswoman Stevens,” said Rep. Burchett. “Colorectal Cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., and this bill will help allocate resources to detect cancer in the early stages.”

The Colorectal Cancer Early Detection Act would provide grants to states to:

  • Screen individuals under 45 who are at increased or high risk of colorectal cancer;

  • Provide referrals for appropriate medical treatment;

  • Develop and carry out public awareness campaigns;

  • Conduct education and outreach to health professionals;

  • Monitor and improve the quality of screening procedures;

  • Identify additional risk factors through surveillance;

  • Strengthen genetic family history assessments; and

  • Create patient navigations and clinician decision support tools.

The bill responds to a dangerous gap in screening rates: in 2023, just 33.7 percent of individuals ages 45 to 49 were screened for colorectal cancer, compared to 63.5 percent of adults ages 45 to 75. In Michigan, while 76.7 percent of residents 45 to 75 are up to date on screenings, far too many younger residents remain undiagnosed until the disease has advanced – especially as ⅕ of colorectal cancer cases nationwide were in individuals under 54.

The legislation has been endorsed by leading medical and patient advocacy organizations, including the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, Colorectal Cancer Alliance, Fight Colorectal Cancer, and National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

“The rise of early-onset colorectal cancer is alarming, and it is changing the face of this disease. Too many young people are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, often after delays that cost precious time. With cases of early-onset colorectal cancer rising, we must educate young people and providers about risks and symptoms — and ensure that those at high risk can get timely screening. This legislation brings us closer to a future where fewer families face the devastating impact of this disease.” – Anjee Davis, CEO Fight Colorectal Cancer

“We applaud Representatives Haley Stevens and Tim Burchett for introducing the Colorectal Cancer Early Detection Act, which would target cancer prevention efforts in individuals younger than 45 years old. As gastroenterologists, we know firsthand the importance of early detection. In fact, in 2019, one-in-five of all colorectal cancer cases were in Americans 54 years or younger, up from one-in-ten in 1995. Now, Americans born around 1990 are estimated to have twice the risk of colon cancer and four times the risk of rectal cancer compared to those born around 1950. As a result, by 2030, more than 27,000 individuals ages 20 to 49 will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer. To change this unfortunate reality and save lives, we urge Congress to bring this important bill to a vote.” – Amy S. Oxentenko, MD, FACG, President of the American College of Gastroenterology

“Colorectal cancer screening according to evidence-based, expert consensus-driven guidelines helps catch colon and rectal cancers earlier when it is easier to treat; and can even prevent cancer entirely,” said Crystal S. Denlinger, MD, Chief Executive Officer, National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN®). “The Colorectal Cancer Early Detection Act represents a pivotal effort to improve outcomes for younger people at higher risk for this deadly disease. We applaud this legislative move to address the rising rates of early onset colorectal cancer across the country.”

“The rise of colorectal cancer in young people is one of the most alarming public health trends of our time,” said Michael Sapienza, CEO of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance. “We are seeing far too many lives cut short because symptoms are missed, screening comes too late, or people simply don’t know they’re at risk. The Colorectal Cancer Early Detection Act is a critical step toward changing that trajectory—ensuring that states have the resources to identify high-risk individuals under 45, increase awareness, and connect people to lifesaving care. This legislation has the potential to save thousands of lives, and the Colorectal Cancer Alliance is proud to stand with our partners in urging Congress to make it law.”

“As gastroenterologists, we want to prevent – not treat – colorectal cancer (CRC).

The Colorectal Cancer Detection Act will help make screening available to more Americans, which will ultimately save lives. Currently the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., CRC is rapidly rising among young people ages 20 to 39. The silver lining: this disease is treatable when diagnosed early. It is more critical than ever that we reverse this trend by encouraging appropriate screening. The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) is proud to partner in the fight against CRC and thanks Reps. Stevens and Burchett for leading efforts to address the rise in early onset colorectal cancer.” – AGA President Larry Kim, MD, AGAF

Haley Stevens, Lead Author Of The Stop Trump’s Abuse Of Power Act, Responds To Threat Trump Will Be Deploying The Military To Chicago

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)

Stevens’ Bill Would Prevent The President From Deploying The Military Without The Consent Of Local Leadership

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to the news that Donald Trump plans to deploy the military to Chicago, over the wishes of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens, the lead author of the Stop Trump’s Abuse of Power Act, released the following statement:

“Since the moment he was sworn in, Donald Trump has caused chaos and abused his power to advance his political agenda. We saw him do it in Los Angeles – where his decision to deploy the Marines on U.S. soil created more chaos, more uncertainty, and more violence – and now he is threatening an unwelcome and dangerous show of force in Chicago.

“These kinds of reckless abuses of power must stop, which is why I introduced the Stop Trump’s Abuse of Power Act to ensure the President can’t continue to sow chaos in our country.

“We need to put an end to Trump’s chaos and defend the rule of law so we can get back to lowering the rising costs that are facing the Michiganders I am meeting with every day.”

House Republicans Vote to Raise Energy Costs and Weaken National Security in Extreme Energy and Water Funding Bill

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09)

Republicans Slash Vital Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Funding for States

**STATE-BY-STATE FACT SHEET**

Washington, DC — Today, the House passed Republicans’ harmful 2026 Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies funding bill that increases costs for American households, undermines infrastructure investments, and weakens our national security.

The bill:

  • Increases energy costs, jeopardizes energy independence, and hurts United States’ competitiveness by slashing the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy programs nearly in half, revoking more than $5 billion from the Department of Energy’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law resources, and eliminating funding for the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations.
  • Weakens national security and leaves Americans more vulnerable to nuclear threats by cutting the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation account by 17 percent.
  • Abandons commitments to communities to clean up radioactive waste by eliminating funding for the Corps of Engineers’ Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program and cutting the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management by 9 percent.

“Sadly, this Republican Energy and Water bill did not have bipartisan input, and misses the mark to set the course for our nation’s future in the new age frontiers of energy and water,” Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee Ranking Member Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) said. “While energy prices are up 10% nationwide since January, and some families from my region have seen their monthly bills more than double, this bill cedes American leadership in the global energy race to our adversaries including the Chinese Communist Party. It weakens vital nuclear nonproliferation programs that help keep our country and world safe. By turning their backs on communities suffering from the long lasting impact of our early atomic weapons programs, Republicans show the callous disregard they have for America’s forgotten communities. We need to invest in energy independence in perpetuity — and if this bill becomes law, we will live to regret it, as our children and grandchildren inherit a future devoid of opportunity. The passage of this ill-considered and careless bill hurts our communities from coast to coast, and is a true disservice for future generations to come.”

Watch Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur’s floor remarks here

“Instead of working with Democrats to lower the cost of living and consider funding bills that have a chance of becoming law, House Republicans just wasted another week on a bill that raises energy costs, threatens our national security, and does nothing to address the looming government funding deadline,” Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) said. “By slashing the budget for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy nearly in half, House Republicans are attacking the programs that help working families, create good-paying jobs in our communities, and keep America competitive. Republicans’ funding bill undermines the very programs that stop the spread of nuclear weapons, detect nuclear activity, and uphold arms control efforts that make America and the world safer – and it underfunds efforts to clean up sites contaminated by our nation’s early atomic energy program. All of this after Republicans passed the Big Ugly Bill, a law that gives massive tax breaks to billionaires and the biggest corporations while driving up home energy bills for families by as much as 30 percent. I hope this is the last partisan funding bill Republicans force the House to consider. It is time for them to abandon this charade and join Democrats in finding a path forward.”

DeGette, Pallone, and Health Subcommittee Democrats Demand Oversight Hearing Following Ouster of CDC Director and Senior Leaders

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Diana DeGette (First District of Colorado)

E&C Democrats Demand RFK, Jr, Senior HHS Officials, and the Former CDC Leaders Testify

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Diana DeGette (CO-01), Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06), and all Democratic Health subcommittee members called on GOP Energy and Commerce Committee leadership to immediately convene hearings following the firing of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Dr. Susan Monarez and the departure of several other senior CDC officials.

“The fact that Dr. Monarez was forced out for following the evidence and the science is disturbing, to say the least,”the Members wrote. “This is part of a clear pattern of Secretary Kennedy’s direct attack on scientific integrity in favor of his extremist, unscientific views.”

The Members also highlighted the broader risks to public health and national security, saying “the substantial chaos at the agency and the simultaneous departure of the nation’s experts in critical infectious disease topic areas leaves the agency weakened and our nation’s public health infrastructure extremely vulnerable to potential biosecurity threats.”

The letter demands testimony from HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., other senior HHS officials, and the CDC leaders who recently departed, to shed light on the circumstances of Dr. Monarez’s removal and the state of science-based policymaking at the nation’s top public health agency.

Newhouse Votes to Put Taxpayers First in Financial Services Appropriations

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Dan Newhouse (4th District of Washington)

Headline: Newhouse Votes to Put Taxpayers First in Financial Services Appropriations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (WA-04) released the following statement upon committee passage of the Fiscal Year 2026 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act.

“House Appropriations is back at work to ensure we are being good stewards of taxpayer dollars, and this legislation focuses on strengthening the institutions those taxpayers rely on. We prioritized provisions that protect Americans’ financial privacy and support American businesses by implementing new ‘Buy American’ policies for resources purchased by the federal government,” said Rep. Newhouse.

Newhouse continues, “With the recent announcement of the Secretary of Agriculture being added to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), I am glad to see this legislation fully fund CFIUS and their newest mission to keep the CCP out of the market for American farmland.”

The Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act provides a total discretionary allocation of $23.341 billion, which is approximately $410 million below the Fiscal Year 2025 allocation and a 7.9 percent reduction from the Fiscal Year 2025 enacted discretionary appropriation.

The bill restores fiscal discipline and common sense to the federal government. The measure upholds the rights of American citizens, strengthens national security, and harnesses technology to make the federal government work smarter, faster, and more efficiently for the American people.

U.S. Rep. Castor Blasts Dangerous DeSantis & Ladapo Announcement on Childhood Immunizations

Source: United States House of Representatives – Reprepsentative Kathy Castor (FL14)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Florida Surgeon General’s announcement that the State of Florida should end all childhood immunization safeguards is harmful and absurd.

For years, he and Governor DeSantis have pushed inaccurate and dangerous anti-vaccine policies that put Florida families and children at risk. Their false claims throughout the COVID-19 pandemic around a range of health policies failed Floridians and cost lives.

Last week, I called for the resignation of HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. due to his complete disregard for facts and basic science, outright destruction of lifesaving medical research and purge of America’s leading health experts. The MAGA public health circus at the state and federal level must end now before lives are needlessly lost.

America is currently suffering one of the most significant measles outbreaks in decades. Congressional Republicans are rolling back access to health care and slashing funding for life-saving medical research. And so-called health “leaders” like Secretary Kennedy and Florida’s Surgeon General are undermining years of progress and innovation.

I urge parents to follow the advice of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association and their trusted pediatrician, so that no one has to suffer from a serious or deadly illness. We know that vaccines work – for children and adults alike. I will fight to ensure that parents and families across America have access to accurate scientific and health information to keep them healthy and well.

Finally, I rebuke the Governor and Surgeon General for announcing this policy in the Tampa Bay area, which is one of America’s leading health innovation regions. Thanks to cutting-edge health research at the University of South Florida, the Moffitt Cancer Center and more, our community is developing modern treatments and cures while attracting top talent with good-paying jobs.  The backward and dangerous announcement is a setback to our dynamic region of innovation and investment, and to the incredibly dedicated people who work here, and must be rejected far and wide.

Stauber Leads Subcommittee Hearing on Series of Pro-Mining Bills, Including His Legislation to Codify Trump’s Mining Executive Orders

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) chaired a House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources Hearing on six mining-related bills, including his recently introduced legislation to codify certain provisions of President Trump’s newly enacted mining Executive Orders (EOs) that will help put the United States on a path toward mineral dominance.

Of his legislation, Stauber stated, “While the United States is blessed with many mineral deposits, including a major copper-nickel deposit located right in my district, our burdensome permitting process and the policies implemented by previous anti-mining administrations have kept these critical minerals in the ground and left us increasingly dependent on foreign adversaries like Communist China. Fortunately, President Trump is back in the White House, and he has given us the chance to reverse course by signing Executive Orders to increase American critical mineral production. I am proud to introduce legislation that codifies key provisions of these EOs into law, bringing much needed certainty and consistency to America’s mining policies as we work to achieve mineral dominance.”

Specifically, Congressman Stauber’s legislation would do the following:

  • Identify Priority Projects: Instructs the Secretary of the Interior, in consultation with the Secretary of Agriculture, to submit to Congress a list of each mining project on federal lands for which an approval application has been submitted to the Department of the Interior (DOI). Within 10 days of submission, directs the Secretary to identify each priority project that can immediately be approved and take all necessary steps to expedite these projects.
  • Examine Mining Potential on Federal Land: Requires the Secretary of the Interior, in consultation with the Secretary of Agriculture, to submit to Congress a list of active, inactive, and proposed mining projects on Federal land that have the potential to increase production of hardrock minerals or their byproducts, expand existing operations to include hardrock mineral byproducts, or produce hardrock minerals from mine tailings. Orders the Secretary of the Interior to submit to Congress a list of all Federal lands managed by DOI or the Secretary of Agriculture which may be suitable for hardrock exploration, development, or production.
  • Conduct Regulatory Review: Within 90 days of enactment, directs the Secretary of the Interior, in consultation with the Secretary of Agriculture and industry stakeholders, to suspend, revise or rescind agency actions that hinder the development of domestic mining projects. Within 180 days of enactment, requires the Secretary of the Interior, in consultation with the Secretary of Agriculture, to submit to Congress a report that includes recommendations for changes to current law necessary to streamline domestic mining and a nationwide review of state and local laws or regulations that impede mineral exploration and development.
  • Analyze Economic Impacts of Mineral Net Import Reliance: Directs the Secretary of the Interior to report on dollar value and overall economic impact of each mineral commodity for which the U.S. is import-reliant in the U.S. Geological Survey’s annual Mineral Commodities Summaries.
  • Implement Detailed Mapping: Directs the Secretary of the Interior to prioritize efforts to accelerate the ongoing, detailed geologic mapping of the United States and requires the Secretary to submit to Congress a report regarding g the progress and estimated completion of DOI’s mapping initiative within on year of enactment.

Krishnamoorthi Blasts Trump’s Plan to Stage Mass Immigration Raids in Chicago

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (8th District of Illinois)

CHICAGO – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi issued the following statement regarding reports that the Trump administration plans to use Naval Station Great Lakes to stage mass immigration raids in Chicago:

“President Trump’s reported plan to stage mass immigration raids out of Naval Station Great Lakes is reckless and unacceptable. Using a U.S. Navy base as a detention and deportation hub for increasingly militarized operations risks sweeping up American citizens and legal permanent residents, as this administration has already done repeatedly. These tactics tear families apart while undermining constitutionally protected rights across our region. I will be monitoring this situation as it escalates and intend to conduct my oversight duties, just as I attempted to do earlier this summer. Given this administration’s demonstrated record of flagrant abuses of power, we need accountability and transparency immediately. No one should have to navigate this fear and uncertainty alone, and I will continue working to hold this administration accountable for its unlawful, unjust, and un-American tactics. President Trump may be willing to trample on the Constitution, but the people of Chicago never will — and neither will I.”
