Speaker Johnson on Trump Accounts: “More Americans Will Be Saving, Investing, and Building a Solid Financial Footing”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04)

WASHINGTON — Today, Speaker Johnson delivered remarks at the U.S. Treasury Department’s Trump Accounts Summit to highlight this transformational new policy, signed into law through Republicans’ Working Families Tax Cut bill. Speaker Johnson was joined at the Trump Accounts Summit by President Trump, Senator Cruz, Chairman Jason Smith, Michael Dell, Kevin O’Leary, Nicki Minaj, and others.

“At the very heart of this policy is the goal of putting young Americans back in the driver’s seat of their own destinies and opportunities at an early age,” Speaker Johnson said. “Good government policy empowers the individual, and it nurtures and encourages the best of human ingenuity and human progress. That’s exactly what the Trump Accounts aim to do.”

Watch Speaker Johnson’s full remarks here.

Below are Speaker Johnson’s remarks as delivered:

It’s so great to be with you all. I was delighted to come out, but I did not want to follow Nicki Minaj. I told her backstage, I almost wore that coat today, and I’m so glad that I didn’t. Really, it is such a great privilege to join you all today. It’s great to be with an extraordinary group of visionaries, people who care so much about this country and about its future.

And it’s a really broad and diverse coalition. And that’s what’s so exciting about this. So many people have come together because we all care about the same things. We care about our children, we care about working families, and we care about the future of this extraordinary country. It is no small thing to get such a large group excited about tax policy, Mr. Secretary. So, we don’t take that for granted. It doesn’t happen very often.

When President Trump returned to office, we were all very excited. We were excited to get going. We wanted to chart America’s renewal, and we didn’t waste a moment in that. The Republican-led Congress got right to work. We worked to steer this country of ours back toward common sense and to undo all of the damage that was really wrought by the four years of Bidenomics.

We had a lot to fix; as you know, we inherited a real mess. The unmitigated crisis at our border was the number one issue in the 2024 election because we had to correct that. But it was also the economy and decades-high inflation was fueled by failures of Bidenomics. And it was a serious problem for all American families. Four long years, we had to endure that.

The only solutions offered during that time were by the Biden Administration, the Democrats in charge. They wanted another government program. They wanted another federal agency. They wanted more taxes and more government spending. And I am here to declare to you today what you have all seen demonstrated: those days are now behind us, and we are so grateful for that.

Republicans are ushering in a New Golden Era, a New Golden Age. And this is certainly true. It’s driven not by more government, but by the talent and the ingenuity and the industriousness of the American people. And that’s at the very heart of what we are celebrating here today.

Now, I want to tell you that what we got done in the first year of the Trump Administration was a remarkable thing. I think history will record that it was one of the most productive years of any new administration or Congress, certainly in the modern era. And I think it’s in the top five of all time if you look back at history. And people are going to see and feel the effects of that now.

The Working Families Tax Cuts was such a transformational, nation-shaping piece of legislation. There was so much in it, there was so much to share about it. But with One Big Beautiful Bill, we simplified the tax code. We reduced the tax burden on families, and we advanced a policy agenda that puts working families first.

And during this tax season, which starts this week, tens of millions of Americans are going to see the effects of that, bigger paychecks and bigger tax refunds. We wrote this legislation for small business owners and for lower- and middle-income families, the very people who suffered the most during the Biden years.

It’s with these Americans in mind that the Trump Accounts was born. You’ve heard so much about it today, and I don’t want to reiterate all the facts, but there’s some exciting things here. At the very heart of this policy is the goal of putting young Americans back in the driver’s seat of their own destinies and opportunities at an early age. Good government policy empowers the individual, and it nurtures and encourages the best of human ingenuity and human progress. That’s exactly what the Trump Accounts aim to do.

With this historic new savings tool, more Americans will be saving, investing, and building a solid financial footing. And as you’ve been told, Trump Accounts will come online on July 5, I think poetically, just a day after we celebrate our 250th birthday, the 250th birthday of the greatest nation in the history of the world.

And I like to remind groups all the time, everywhere I am, don’t take that for granted. We live in the greatest nation in history. It’s the most free, most successful, most powerful, most benevolent nation that has ever been.

And America’s 250th, our anniversary that we celebrate this year, is a chance for all Americans to celebrate and recommit to the founding principles that made all that possible. The principles upon which our nation was built. Among those principles is the belief in the free market, the belief in individual responsibility and financial stewardship. The belief that everybody gets a shot. And the simple but powerful idea that if you work hard and play by the rules, you can improve the standing of your family in one generation.

Our goal with Trump Accounts was to put those foundational ideas back in focus, particularly for the millions of middle- and working-class Americans who have felt those ideas, they felt for the last several years that the American dream itself was slipping further and further beneath their grasp.

And we’ve heard for those who opt in, as we’ve heard today, the Trump Accounts have the potential to help children accrue tens of thousands of dollars by the time they reach adulthood. And that could make the difference, the difference in so many lives when it comes to paying for college or buying their first home or starting their own business. What an extraordinary concept and what a fitting way to invest in America’s future as we celebrate 250 years since our nation was born.

Trump Accounts are a truly transformational piece of policy that can change the lives of every American. And the beauty of this: it has nothing to do with your race or religion or color or creed. It’s for everybody.

Takano, Blumenthal, and Jacobs Reintroduce the Commission on Equity and Reconciliation in the Uniformed Services Act

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mark Takano (D-Calif)

January 27, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs and Chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus Mark Takano (CA-39), Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Ranking Member Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Representative Sara Jacobs (CA-51) reintroduced the Commission on Equity and Reconciliation in the Uniformed Services Act. The bill would establish a commission to investigate the historic and ongoing impacts of discriminatory military policies on LGBTQ+ servicemembers and veterans.

Today also marks the one-year anniversary of the Trump Administration’s Executive Order banning transgender servicemembers from openly serving in the Armed Forces, forcing the separation of thousands of capable and dedicated servicemembers.

Approximately 114,000 servicemembers were discharged on the basis of their sexual orientation between WWII and 2011, while an estimated 870,000 LGBTQ servicemembers have been impacted by hostility, harassment, assault, and law enforcement targeting due to the military policies in place. These separations are devastating and have long-reaching impacts. Veterans who were discharged on discriminatory grounds are unable to access their benefits, and under the Trump Administration LGBTQ+ veterans and servicemembers have been openly persecuted.

It should not be so difficult for all servicemembers to abide by the uncompromising code of integrity to themselves, their families, and their units when they join the United States Uniformed Services—and they should be honored for their service, regardless of who they are. The commission established through this bill is modeled after the Congressional commission that investigated and secured redress for Japanese Americans interned during World War II, from which Congressman Takano’s family received an official apology and redress payment. That history and model inspired him to craft this bill.

“Qualified servicemembers were hunted down and forced to leave the military at the direction of our government,” said Representative Takano. “These practices have continued, now with our government targeting transgender servicemembers. The forced separation and dishonorable discharges LGBTQ+ people received must be rectified, benefits fully granted, and dignity restored to those who have protected our freedoms.”

“LGBTQ+ servicemembers have long been the target of dangerous and discriminatory policies—resulting in harassment, involuntary discharge, and barriers to their earned benefits,” said Senator Blumenthal. “Establishing this commission is an important step to understand the full scope of harm and address the damage caused by policies like ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’ As LGBTQ+ servicemembers and veterans face repugnant and blatant bigotry under the Trump Administration, we will keep fighting to secure a more equitable future for all who serve our country in uniform.”

“Instead of righting wrongs and making amends to our LGBTQ+ service members and veterans who’ve suffered injustices for decades, I’m ashamed that the Trump Administration has doubled down: kicking trans folks out of the military and banning their enlistment,” said Rep. Jacobs. “We know that LGBTQ+ service members and veterans have faced so much ugliness – discrimination, harassment, professional setbacks, and even violence – that has led to unjust discharges and disparities in benefits, but we still don’t have a full picture of all the harm caused. That needs to change. That’s why I’m proud to co-lead this bill to investigate these harms, address the impacts of discriminatory official policies like ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and the transgender military ban, and ensure equity and justice for our LGBTQ+ service members and veterans.”

Reps. Takano and Jacobs are leading the bill in the House, while Senator Blumenthal is introducing companion legislation in the Senate.

Congressman Takano’s office has profiled and interviewed LGBTQ+ servicemembers who were harmed by discriminatory policies in the uniformed services.

The Commission on Equity and Reconciliation in the Uniformed Services Act is supported by: Minority Veterans of America, Human Rights Campaign, Equality California, SPARTA, Transgender Americans Veteran Association

Rep. Huffman Votes Against Giving Trump No-Strings-Attached Check

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Jared Huffman Representing the 2nd District of California

January 22, 2026

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Jared Huffman (CA-02) voted against the second three-bill minibus. This latest package includes the conference agreements for the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies; Defense; and Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies appropriations bills. He also voted against the separate funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security.

“Democrats were able to negotiate some strong wins for the American people in this minibus. But of course, Republicans sabotaged them by attaching their unacceptable Defense bill that they knew would be dead on arrival if it had to stand alone,” said Rep. Huffman. “That bill does nothing to enforce accountability or oversight for Trump’s delusional and dangerous moves in Greenland and Venezuela, and it funnels billions of dollars into the Pentagon’s already massive slush fund. It’s just another no-strings-attached check for this lawless administration that would end up compromising our national security and keep enabling Trump.

“I would have voted in favor of the other two bills on their own, but I couldn’t vote for this added defense package. However, I’m proud I was able to negotiate to include funding for some important community projects in the final bill. Those will have direct benefits for the people we represent, which is where our focus should be,” Huffman continued.

“Republicans also added an 11th hour vote on more funding for the Department of Homeland Security. That was the easiest “no” vote I could have taken. I will in no uncertain terms send a single cent Trump’s vigilante agency and ICE thugs that are terrorizing our communities,” Huffman said.

Rep. Huffman successfully secured funding for four community projects in California’s Second District:

  • $850,000: Fairfax-San Anselmo Children’s Center Safety Upgrades, County of Marin, Fairfax, CA
  • $2,000,000: Point Reyes Workforce Housing, County of Marin, Point Reyes Station, CA
  • $250,000: Oak Hill Workforce Housing, Marin County Public Financing Authority, San Quentin, CA
  • $1,200,000: Spud Point-Bodega Bay Ice-making Plant, County of Sonoma, Bodega Bay, CA

Regarding the Homeland Security bill, Huffman said: “The biggest disappointment in this package is the blank check for ICE. I cannot in good conscience vote to support massive funding without any serious guardrails for an agency that is totally off the rails. Trump has built ICE into a lawless paramilitary force with chilling similarities to what rightwing dictators have done throughout history to destroy democracies and consolidate absolute power. ICE has an absurdly bloated budget and is being deployed not to police our southern border or conduct targeted immigration enforcement, but to terrorize communities and intimidate and punish political opposition. Congress should be intervening to stop these abuses and fundamentally reform ICE, not providing funding and a de facto stamp of approval.”

Congressman Jimmy Gomez Recognizes El Sereno Student As 2025 Congressional App Challenge Winner for ‘Know Your Rights’ App

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34)

LOS ANGELES — Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) today recognized Julian Miramontes, an eighth-grade student at El Sereno Middle School, as the winner of the 2025 Congressional App Challenge for California’s 34th District, honoring his app “Know Your Rights / Conozca Sus Derechos,” which helps immigrant families understand their legal rights during immigration enforcement encounters.

Julian developed the app after witnessing the fear and uncertainty immigration raids created in his community. Designed to be simple and accessible, the app provides guidance on what to do and what rights individuals have when confronted by immigration authorities.

Congressman Gomez met with Julian at his downtown Los Angeles district office, where Julian demonstrated how the app works and discussed what inspired him to create it. The meeting followed a surprise Zoom call earlier this month in which Congressman Gomez personally informed Julian that he had won the district’s Congressional App Challenge.

“I saw the effects these immigration raids were having on the community, and I wanted to create a resource that was easily accessible, so people could know their rights in this country,” said Julian. I wanted to help my community in a good way.

The Congressional App Challenge is a nationwide competition created by the U.S. House of Representatives to encourage students to learn computer science and develop innovative solutions to real-world problems. Winning apps from each congressional district are eligible to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol, and winners are invited to Washington, D.C. to meet fellow student innovators from across the country.

Rep. Chu Responds to President Trump's Executive Order on LA Fires

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Judy Chu (CA2-27)

Pasadena, CA – Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s Executive Order, “Accelerating Rebuilding in Wildfire-Devastated Los Angeles.”

“The number one concern I hear from wildfire survivors in my district is whether they can afford to rebuild, and this Executive Order does nothing to address that. In fact, it will do nothing to accelerate rebuilding,” said Rep. Chu.

“For more than a year, President Trump and congressional Republicans have refused to deliver supplemental disaster aid not only to communities devastated by the Eaton and Palisades Fires, but also to disaster survivors in Florida, Texas, and North Carolina.”

“This Executive Order is yet another distraction from the President’s responsibility to immediately fulfill Governor Newsom’s $34 billion supplemental disaster aid request – with no strings attached. I will not stop fighting until this assistance is delivered and our communities have what they need from the federal government to recover, rebuild, and heal.”

McCollum Announces Winners of 2025 Congressional App Challenge

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Monday, Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) held a virtual event to congratulate Riddhi Singhvi of Stillwater Area High School for winning the 2025 Fourth Congressional District App Challenge. Singhvi’s app, Bite Balance, was chosen by an independent judge from the Fourth Congressional District.

Bite Balance is a wellness application designed to improve user health by replacing calorie counting and manual food logging with simple, AI-driven insights. Bite Balance helps users understand how food, activity, and rest work together to support gut health and daily energy use. Users take a photo of their meals, which the app analyzes to assess nutrition quality, fiber, and food processing, generating a Gut Balance Index. This information is combined with real-time data from wearables devices, i.e. an Apple Watch, tracking activities, sleep, and stress levels. Producing a single, easy-to-read “Bite Balance” score. The app also provides three core insights: nutrition quality, energy balance, and recovery to guide users to healthier and more mindful choices. By eliminating tracking and focusing on long-term habits, Bite Balance aims to offer a science-based, user-friendly approach to wellness that empowers people to better understand their bodies and build sustainable health routines.

Congresswoman McCollum also congratulated second-place winner Ethan Finch of Stillwater Area High School for his app ArticuRace, and third-place winner Karthik Uppala of Math and Science Academy for his app EchoLens.

“It is a pleasure to congratulate Riddhi Singhvi as the winner of the 2025 Fourth Congressional District App Challenge, and recognize Ethan Finch and Karthik Uppala for their outstanding entries,” said Congresswoman McCollum. Bite Balance is Riddhi’s first solo entry to the MN-04 Congressional App Challenge. Riddhi and her brother, Coolsjes, a rising senior had previously entered second place during the 2024 Congressional App Challenge.

This year’s judge was Metropolitan State University senior Calvin Yang, who is majoring in Computer Science. Yang’s experience includes an internship at Trusted Semiconductor Solutions working on AI models and integrations. His relevant focus is on Algorithms and Data Structures; Organization of Programming Languages; Database Management Systems; and Machine Learning.

The Congressional App Challenge is a nationwide STEAM competition where students create an application or “app” for desktop/PC, web, tablet, mobile, or other devices. Fourth Congressional District middle and high school students are encouraged to enter next year’s competition by submitting an app of their own creation by late October 2027.

Students and educators can find more information about the competition at mccollum.house.gov.

Rep. Mike Levin’s Statement on Department of Energy’s Announcement on Nuclear Waste and Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Levin (CA-49)

January 28, 2026

Washington, D.C.—Today, Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49) released the following statement in response to the Department of Energy’s Request for Information inviting states to weigh in on hosting Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses:

“The Department of Energy is taking a meaningful and long-overdue step forward on spent nuclear fuel by inviting states to weigh in on hosting Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses. For interested states, these campuses could deliver significant economic and job-creation benefits. The proposed campuses would support key functions across the nuclear fuel lifecycle, including fuel fabrication, enrichment, reprocessing used nuclear fuel, and waste disposal.

“I’m encouraged to see the Trump Administration taking community collaboration seriously by engaging states early, which follows expert analysis and international best practices — an approach I’ve advocated for years.

“While experts have conveyed skepticism that reprocessing is the right answer for shutdown plants storing waste in canisters like SONGS, I am glad that these Innovation Campuses also include waste storage and disposal and recognize state interest in reprocessing and other aspects of the fuel cycle. But any credible proposal that comes out of this process must prioritize removing spent fuel from shutdown plants first and must account for fuel that isn’t commercially preferred for reprocessing.

“This announcement lays important groundwork, but success will depend on reliable funding and long-term, independent management that extends beyond any single administration. I will continue pushing Congress to fund and modernize this program and amend the Nuclear Waste Policy Act so this effort can actually deliver results.”

Since entering Congress in 2019, Rep. Levin has secured over $248 million for the safe removal and management of the nation’s spent nuclear fuel. Earlier this month, he wrote to DOE Secretary Chris Wright urging the Department to establish a safe, effective, and long-term management program for spent nuclear fuel. Rep. Levin has also introduced the bipartisan Nuclear Waste Administration Act of 2024, which would modernize our country’s nuclear waste management program by establishing an independent Nuclear Waste Administration to manage the country’s nuclear waste.

CONGRESSWOMAN PLASKETT CONFIRMS NO ICE RAIDS ON ST. JOHN; URGES COMMUNITY VIGILANCE AS HAITI TPS EXPIRATION APPROACHES

ST. JOHN, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett (D-USVI) today issued the following statement regarding reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity on St. John:

“My office received reports from community members concerning ICE raids occurring on St. John. My team and I have investigated the matter with the appropriate authorities and can confirm that these reports were false. There were no ICE raids on St. John.

“Nonetheless, this incident underscores the climate of fear and uncertainty facing many in our community as Temporary Protected Status for Haitians is set to expire on February 3, 2026. I am deeply concerned that this expiration will be used as an excuse to begin more aggressive enforcement actions against the most vulnerable members of our community—not only Haitians, but anyone who may be profiled. The safety and wellbeing of all Virgin Islands residents remain a priority, and I am committed to ensuring that any federal enforcement activities are conducted lawfully and with full respect for the dignity and rights of our residents.

“I urge all Virgin Islands residents to know their rights when interacting with immigration enforcement. My office has ‘Know Your Rights’ information that we have distributed in the community and social media available in English, Haitian Creole, and Spanish to help community members understand their legal protections during encounters with federal agents. Regardless of your immigration status, you have constitutional protections.

“My team and I will continue to closely monitor the situation for any significant or increased presence of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents in St. John. We will keep the public apprised of any developments. If you experience concerning interactions with federal enforcement or need assistance understanding your rights as an immigrant, please do not hesitate to contact my office. We are here to serve you.”

My offices are located at 60 King Street on St. Croix and at 9100 Port of Sale Mall, Port Havensight on St. Thomas and can be contacted at 340-778-5900 (STX) and 340-774-4408 (STT/STJ).
