The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded a $1,079,165 grant to the Scott County Telephone Cooperative. The funding covers the costs incurred from projects that repaired telephone poles and fiber optic cables damaged by Hurricane Helene. U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement:

“After Hurricane Helene hit Virginia’s Ninth District, I immediately surveyed the damages to our communities and the groups that helped with disaster relief and recovery projects. Many organizations had to incur major financial costs for their efforts to rebuild our communities.

“I appreciate Scott County Telephone Cooperative for tending to the needs of our Appalachian communities under dire circumstances to rebuild essential communications infrastructure. I am glad to announce that they will receive more than $1.07 million as a result of their help in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.”

BACKGROUND

All work and validated costs in this project fall between 9/27/2024 through 2/14/2025.

In 2024, Congressman Griffith supported the American Relief Act which contained the disaster supplemental package. He continually advocated for the spending package to include disaster relief.

This week, Congressman Griffith announced grants from the disaster supplemental package going to both the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission and Cumberland Plateau Planning District Commission.

Based in Gate City, Scott County Telephone Cooperative serves Scott, Russell, Wise, Dickenson and Lee Counties and the City of Norton.

This month, Congressman Griffith participated in a hearing to discuss public safety communications in Southwest Virginia.

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded a $3,200,000 grant to Lee County. The funding helps a wastewater treatment project that is supported by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and will promote economic development in western Lee County. U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement:

“For years, I am proud to have worked with the necessary partners to advocate for this wastewater treatment project in Lee County.

“After helping secure more than $26 million in federal funding, I believe this ARC grant for $3.2 million will help in the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant and installation of new main sewer lines.”

BACKGROUND

In January 2025, Congressman Griffith joined Virginia Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to announce more than $26 million in federal funding for this project. These federal funds were made available through the disaster supplemental package that Congress passed in 2024.

In 2024, Congressman Griffith supported the American Relief Act which contained the disaster supplemental package. He continually advocated for the spending package to include disaster relief.

Congressman Griffith’s support for this project included submission of a community funded project request for Fiscal Year 2023.

The project will consist of building a new .3MGD wastewater treatment plant and installing 171,000 linear feet of new gravity and force main sewer lines.

This month, Congressman Griffith participated in a recent Rules Committee hearing to voice his support for funding the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Higgins’ Legislation Empowering DC Law Enforcement Passes Through House of Representatives

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) announced today that H.R. 5143, the District of Columbia Policing Protection Act, passed through the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill would expand the authority of DC law enforcement officers to engage in vehicular pursuit of a suspect.

Current DC law restricts officers from pursuing a suspect unless they have committed a crime of violence or pose an immediate threat of death or serious bodily injury to another person. Congressman Higgins’ bill amends the Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act of 2022, to eliminate these restrictions and provide broader authority for officers to pursue suspects. The bill also directs a trial system to alert members of the public to police pursuits in their immediate vicinity.

The legislation supports President Trump’s effort to improve public safety in the nation’s capital, where crime rates have risen due to policies that prevent local law enforcement from effectively performing their duties. Read the full bill text here

Hoyer Statement on 86th Anniversary of the Soviet Invasion of Poland

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steny H Hoyer (MD-05)

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today marking 86 years since the Soviet Union invaded Poland on September 17, 1939, as part of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact:

“Today marks 86 years since the Soviet Union launched its surprise invasion of Poland as part of its Molotov-Ribbentrop pact with Nazi Germany. The Nazi-Soviet conquest of Poland was the opening salvo of the most destructive war history has ever known – one born of appeasement, deceit, and broken promises.

“Less than a lifetime later, Europe finds itself amid the largest war it has seen since 1945. The parallels are striking. Once again, Russia is trying to redraw borders by force with its criminal invasion of Ukraine. Once again, Russia threatens Poland – this time flying military drones into its airspace. And, once again, America is sitting on the sidelines as dictators threaten democracy not only in Europe but around the world.

“It is time that the House act on our overwhelming bipartisan consensus to support Ukraine. I urge my colleagues to sign the discharge petition for the Ukraine Support Act. Only five more Members need to sign to give that crucial legislation a fair vote on the House Floor. We ought to take to heart the hard-learned lessons of 1939 and act.”

Rep. Veasey and Sen. Wyden (OR) Will Reintroduce Bicameral Resolution Recognizing September as National Voting Rights Month

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Marc Veasey (33rd District of Texas)

Headline: Rep. Veasey and Sen. Wyden (OR) Will Reintroduce Bicameral Resolution Recognizing September as National Voting Rights Month

The resolution is reintroduced as Donald Trump and House Republicans work to make voting harder for Americans

Washington, D.C.– Congressman Veasey (TX-33) and Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), announced on National Voter Registration Day that they are introducing legislation to make September “National Voting Rights Month.” Considering recent concerns over voting rights, awareness, and suppression, Rep. Veasey and Senator Wyden have released the following statement:

“In recent years we have seen people’s rights and awareness around voting backslide rapidly” said Congressman Veasey. “Voter rolls purges, suppression, racist mid-decade redistricting are all threatening to launch us back into the 50s to a time more reminiscent of the Jim Crow era rather than the 21st century. The fight for voting rights starts with awareness. Designating September as ‘National Voting Rights Month’ is the start of our fight to enshrine our rights.”

“American democracy doesn’t work when politicians play partisan games – and that includes Trump giving states marching orders to carve out red-leaning congressional districts to preserve his own power,” Senator Wyden said. “This resolution is a step toward ensuring that politicians have to face all their constituents at the ballot box. Protecting the right to vote is more critical now than ever because every American deserves to have a stake in our country’s future.”

Gosar Introduces Bills Nullifying Efforts to Lock Up Federal Lands

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Paul A Gosar DDS (AZ-04)

Washington, D.C.  — Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-09), issued the following statement after introducing two bills nullifying previously declared national monuments that lock up federal lands:

“The reckless declaration of vast national monuments has locked up thousands of acres of land, placing them off limits to responsible mining, energy development and other multiple-use purposes that help fuel our economy and support American energy independence.

I am pleased to reintroduce H.R. 5392, the Northern Arizona Protection Act, legislation that would nullify the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni-Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument, declared on August 8, 2023, by Joe Biden, for the stated purpose of preventing uranium mining.

I also introduced H.R. 5393, the Southern Arizona Protection Act, nullifying the Ironwood Forest National Monument, declared on June 9, 2000, by Bill Clinton, solely to lock up domestic copper and gold mining.

The Antiquities Act was never intended to be a tool for radical environmentalists and their political cronies in Washington, D.C. to block access to America’s abundant and much-needed resources.  Thankfully, the Trump Administration is reconsidering both of these National Monuments as executive abuses under the Antiquities Act.

By nullifying these national monuments, my bills reassert Congress’s role and return to a balanced approach where conservation and economic development work in concert.  Federal lands belong to the American people, not unelected bureaucrats or woke presidents who abuse executive authority to shut them off from productive use,” stated Congressman Gosar.

Gosar Introduces Legislation to Restore Accountability and Reform Washington, DC Criminal Justice Policies

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Paul A Gosar DDS (AZ-04)

Washington, D.C. — Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-09), issued the following statementafter introducing H.R. 5183, the District of Columbia Home Rule Improvement Act, important legislation designed to strengthen Congressional oversight of the D.C. Council and prevent the city from enacting reckless policies that jeopardize public safety and undermine the rule of law:

“Under the Constitution’s District Clause, Congress retains ultimate responsibility for the governance of the District of Columbia. Yet in recent years, the D.C. Council has advanced a series of dangerous soft-on-crime measures, including efforts to slash criminal penalties, weaken law enforcement, and defy previous Congressional disapprovals.

H.R. 5183 restores much-needed balance by extending the congressional review period for all D.C. Council legislation from 30 to 60 legislative days before it can take effect. Public safety comes first.  Too often, the D.C. Council rushes through radical measures that disregard safety and defy common sense.

My bill also prohibits the Council from reintroducing or passing bills substantially similar to measures previously disapproved by Congress.  If Congress rejects a bad idea, the Council should not get another chance to sneak it through.

Washington, D.C. deserves a transparent government, not one that hides controversial measures behind so-called “emergency waivers.” My bill also prevents the Council from extending emergency waivers that have been abused to sidestep Congressional oversight and adopt policies that have nothing to do with genuine emergencies.

Finally, H.R. 5183 requires an annual report and hearing from the D.C. Council to Congress.  This commonsense step will ensure that the federal district is governed in a manner that reflects its residents and its unique role as our nation’s capital.

The D.C. Council has shown time and again that it cannot be trusted to put public safety first.  My bill makes it clear: Congress has a constitutional obligation to ensure our nation’s capital is safe, stable, and governed responsibly,” stated Congressman Paul Gosar.

Background:

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held a markup of legislation on September 10, 2025, including H.R. 5813, to ensure our nation’s capital is safe and beautiful. The legislation empowers District law enforcement to combat the juvenile crime crisis, increases educational opportunities for D.C. children, and ensures a beautiful capital city for all Americans.

Carter bill improving health care access for rural America passes committee

Headline: Carter bill improving health care access for rural America passes committee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) today spoke in favor of his Improving Care in Rural America Reauthorization Act, a bill extending critical programs that increase access to health care services in rural communities, which unanimously passed out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Watch and read his remarks below:

“Mr. Chairman, I’d like to express my support for the bipartisan Improving Care in Rural America Reauthorization Act that I have introduced with Senator Tim Scott.

“This legislation would reauthorize critical Rural Health Care Services Outreach Programs that increase access to health care services in rural communities.

“Rural residents often encounter barriers to accessing health care, including distance and transportation issues.

“These roadblocks result in unmet health care needs, leading to a 43 percent higher mortality rate for rural Americans compared to those living in cities and suburbs.

“The Rural Health Care Services Outreach Program represents one of the federal government’s most successful rural health grant initiatives.

“These programs promote innovative solutions that help people in rural communities get the care they need, such as an increase in access to preventative health services and screenings, chronic care management, and other forms of care that are needed in our rural areas across the United States.

“In fact, several recipients in Georgia benefit from this program, including the Southern Healthcare Collaboration in Baxley, Georgia.

“By reauthorizing Rural Health Services Outreach Programs, this bill will lead to increased access to health care services for rural communities.

“In 2020, President Trump signed into law legislation reauthorizing Rural Health Outreach Services Programs under the 2020 CARES Act through fiscal year 2025.

“The Improving Care in Rural America Reauthorization Act of 2025 will extend these critical programs through 2030.

“Further bill changes will ensure that local rural needs are prioritized in grant awards.

“I applaud Senator Scott for introducing this bill with me, and I urge my colleagues to support it.”
