House Republicans Codify President Trump’s Successful Crackdown on D.C. Crime

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04)

WASHINGTON — Speaker Johnson issued the following statement after the House passed four key pieces of legislation this week to codify President Donald Trump’s Executive Order confronting the crime crisis in our nation’s capital.

“Every American deserves to ride public transportation, walk their neighborhood or pick up their children from school without the constant fear of being mugged, carjacked, or shot because of Democrats soft-on-crime policies in Washington, D.C., and other Democrat-run cities across the country.

“President Trump is right to intervene when local leaders fail to act, as we’ve seen in D.C. and now this week in Memphis. House Republicans are taking decisive action to support his efforts by codifying the Administration’s successful crackdown on the rise in violent crime and juvenile lawlessness and restore safety to our nation’s capital.

“Millions of Americans rightly have major concerns because they see how Democrats protect criminals. Republicans’ legislative efforts will help restore order in D.C. but also offer a blueprint for other cities.

“Republicans encourage Mayor Bowser to continue working closely with federal authorities to build on the significant progress in crime reduction in our nation’s capital. By maintaining this coordination, D.C. can be a national example of how effective policy and cooperation can restore public safety.

“From the senseless murder of a Ukrainian refugee in North Carolina to the politically motivated assassination of Charlie Kirk, the American people are calling for an end to rampant crime. Together with President Trump, Republicans are committed to restoring law and order and turning our capital city into a model of safety and accountability for the entire nation.”

House Adopted Legislation Targeting D.C. Crime:

H.R. 4922 — D.C. CRIMES Act (Sponsored by Rep. Byron Donalds): Prohibits the D.C. Council from enacting lenient sentencing reforms and ensures youth offenders are appropriately charged as adults for serious crimes.

H.R. 5140 — District of Columbia Juvenile Sentencing Reform Act (Sponsored by Rep. Brandon Gill): Lowers the age for juveniles to be tried as adults for violent offenses from 16 to 14, addressing the surge in youth crime.

H.R. 5143 — District of Columbia Policing Protection Act (Sponsored by Rep. Clay Higgins): Restores law enforcement’s ability to pursue fleeing suspects and enhances public safety through real-time alerts during police pursuits.

H.R. 5125 — District of Columbia Judicial Nominations Reform Act (Sponsored by Rep. Pete Sessions): Repeals the D.C. Judicial Nomination Commission and returns judicial appointments to the President and Senate, in line with the Constitution.

Rep. Kelly to vote no on partisan spending bill

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Robin Kelly IL

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (IL-02) opposes the House Republicans’ partisan funding bill.

“Republican leadership refused to come to the bipartisan table to negotiate in good faith, and now, they’ve taken President Trump’s orders in stride to jam through a partisan funding bill,” said Rep. Kelly. “For 91 pages, Republicans crammed random provisions in the continuing resolution — but did nothing to save Americans’ healthcare or lower costs. If Republicans continue to ignore our bipartisan offers, millions of Americans will lose their healthcare or see their healthcare premiums skyrocket. I will not support a partisan spending bill that strips away Americans’ access to healthcare.”

Rep. Kelly meets with Chicago-area doctors who treated patients in Gaza

CHICAGO – U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (IL-02) met with Chicago-area doctors and a registered nurse who have returned from Gaza and listened to the horror they witnessed and treated.

“The doctors who I met courageously ran into danger toward cries for help in Gaza. Their powerful accounts painted a vivid picture of the immense suffering and urgent humanitarian needs of Palestinians,” said Rep. Kelly. “I’m thankful for their lifesaving service and them recounting their harrowing experience – if only so it’ll move more people to action. I’m committed to stopping weapons sales to Israel as Prime Minister Netanyahu continues his war of vengeance at the cost of innocent civilian lives. Palestinians, Israelis and the global community need clear action toward durable peace and safety.”

“Always grateful to be able to meet with elected officials who demonstrate moral clarity and take principled approaches,” said Dr. Thaer Ahmad, an emergency medicine physician at Advocate Health Care in Oak Lawn, who has made numerous relief trips to Gaza. “Congresswoman Kelly exemplifies the leadership we need in this country. So thankful we were able to dive into the horrifying situation unfolding in Palestine, and the role the US should play to stop the bombs and save some lives.”

“I deeply appreciate Congresswoman Kelly’s nuanced understanding of the crisis in Gaza, and it is clear that she has taken a principled and just stance,” said Dr. Tammy Abughnaim, an emergency medicine specialist in the Chicago area, who was working in Nasser Hospital when an airstrike hit the hospital. “By voting to Stop the Bombs she has communicated to her constituents and the international community that she will continue the push for accountability at home and abroad. I am looking forward to working closely with the Congresswoman to further our mutual goals of promoting justice for Palestinians.”

“I want to sincerely thank Congresswoman Kelly for her compassionate engagement; her commitment to human rights was evident throughout our discussion,” said Hamza AbdulQader, a critical care registered nurse at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. “We stressed that the starvation and suffering in Palestine are the result of a deliberate policy to restrict food, water, and medicine, compounded by the arbitrary denial rate of 50% to minimize medical teams into Gaza. We left hopeful that she will continue to champion the need for the U.S. to hold its allies to international law, stop the bombs, acknowledge the rights of Palestinian’s, and flood Gaza with the aid it so desperately needs to save lives and end the suffering.”

According to the World Health Organization, only 19 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals remain operational as Palestinians suffer mass displacement, famine and shortage of medical supplies. Rep. Kelly supports the Block the Bombs Act introduced by Rep. Delia Ramirez (IL-03), which prohibits the sale of certain weapons to Israel.

CONGRESSWOMAN PLASKETT URGES CAUTION AS SEVERE WEATHER AND FLOODING IMPACT VIRGIN ISLANDS

PRESS RELEASE

CONGRESSWOMAN PLASKETT URGES CAUTION AS SEVERE WEATHER AND FLOODING IMPACT VIRGIN ISLANDS

U.S. Virgin Islands — Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett issued the following statement regarding severe weather conditions and flooding currently affecting the U.S. Virgin Islands:

“As we have all seen the severe weather conditions and flooding impacting our islands today, I urge all Virgin Islanders to exercise extreme caution, avoid flooded roadways, and heed all emergency advisories from local authorities. Your safety is the most important.

“The flooding we are experiencing today is a stark reminder of our territory’s vulnerability to extreme weather events and the urgent need for resilient infrastructure. We have seen too many times how quickly conditions can deteriorate and the devastating impact on our people, homes, and businesses.

“Eight years later, our community is still recovering and rebuilding from Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The changes in law that I secured under the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 has allowed the funding to rebuild critical infrastructure with resilient design and features that meet the latest industry building standards rather than being limited to pre-disaster conditions (the standard that normally applies). In 2024, the Biden Administration approved an increase in the federal cost-share to 95% for all Public Assistance categories, and 98% for critical infrastructure projects, saving the Territory $1 billion in matching funds.

“We have an opportunity and responsibility to ensure the more than $20 billion in federal funding is used to create an exponentially better Virgin Islands that is resilient. We must ensure that this unprecedented federal funding reaches our communities while supporting infrastructure improvements that will better protect us from future events. We cannot afford delays in the deployment of these resources—everyday matters as we work to strengthen our defenses against future storms and protect our people. Speed and resilience are not competing priorities—they are both essential to our survival and prosperity.

“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the essential workers on the frontlines during this weather event—from our utility crews working to restore and maintain power, to our first responders, emergency personnel, and all those who continue to serve our community during these challenging conditions. Your dedication and courage keep our islands functioning and our people safe.

“Please stay safe, look out for your neighbors, and do not take unnecessary risks. Emergency services are working tirelessly, and the best way to support them is by staying out of harm’s way.”

For emergency assistance, residents should contact local emergency services. For non-emergency federal assistance, contact Congresswoman Plaskett’s Washington, D.C. office at 202-225-1790.

Dingell Leads Michigan Delegation House Democrats in Urging EPA to Maintain Landmark Endangerment Finding

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (12th District of Michigan)

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) led her Democratic Michigan House Delegation colleagues in sending a letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin urging the agency to uphold the 2009 Endangerment Finding. Eliminating the finding, which the Trump Administration has proposed, would end the EPA’s legal basis to enforce limits of harmful levels of greenhouse gas emissions, worsening climate change and endangering Americans’ health, safety, and economic future.

The letter is signed by every House Democrat in the Michigan Delegation: Representatives Rashida Tlaib, Haley Stevens, Hillary Scholten, Shri Thanedar, and Kristen McDonald Rivet.

“In Michigan, unpredictability between seasons is becoming the new normal. In 2024 alone, Michiganders endured eight extreme weather events that each caused more than $1 billion in damages, totaling $23.6 billion and contributing to the tragic loss of nearly 100 lives across the Midwest,” the lawmakers write. “Research from the University of Michigan shows that heat waves and cold spells are becoming more common on the Great Lakes, threatening our $7 billion fishing industry and the surrounding communities that depend on it.  Precipitation in the Great Lakes region has risen 14 percent since 1951, leading to record-breaking rainfall and flooding, including across Southeast Michigan. These storms and temperature swings are also devastating Michigan’s agricultural industry, and our cherry farmers reported losses of up to 80 percent of their crops during the 2024 harvest.”

“By dismantling the Endangerment Finding, the very foundation of climate protection is being stripped away, which undermines vehicle standards, power plant rules, oil and gas safeguards, and other environmental regulations,” the lawmakers continue. “This rollback gives polluters a free pass to pollute at the expense of families across our state, region, and country. It means continued climate chaos, worsening health harms, and higher costs for our constituents, particularly in frontline communities already overburdened by pollution.”

“EPA’s own findings — in 2009, 2015, 2023, and in 2024 — have reaffirmed the overwhelming scientific evidence that greenhouse gas emissions endanger public health and welfare,” the lawmakers conclude. “Rolling back the Endangerment Finding erases climate science from policymaking and abandons EPA’s responsibility under the Clean Air Act. We urge you to maintain the Endangerment Finding and uphold EPA’s duty to protect the health, safety, and economic well-being of Michigan and communities across the country.”

Dingell Delivers $1.6 Million to Upgrade Wastewater Infrastructure in Grosse Ile

Congresswoman Dingell secured these funds through Community Project Funding in 2023, they were made available through the 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act

Gross Ile, September 17, 2025

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) announced Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is awarding Grosse Ile Township $1.6 million to support critical upgrades to its wastewater infrastructure. Congresswoman Dingell secured these funds through Community Project Funding in 2023, and they were made available through the 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act. The funding will be used to repair and rehabilitate aging sanitary sewer pipes and manholes across the township.

“This investment is essential for protecting public health and ensuring the long-term reliability of Grosse Ile’s wastewater system,” said Dingell. “These federal dollars will help Grosse Ile upgrade outdated infrastructure, improve system performance, and reduce the strain on downstream water treatment facilities. It’s a win for the environment, for residents, and future generations.”

The project will include rehabilitation of existing sanitary sewers and manholes, with a focus on extending their useful life and enhancing performance. These improvements will reduce the burden on downstream water treatment and result in better performance of the wastewater conveyance system.

Dingell Writes to Department of Agriculture About Rescinded Funding for Legacy Land Conservancy

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (12th District of Michigan)

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) today sent a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Brook Rollins expressing concern and requesting the Department of Agriculture (USDA) reconsider its decision to rescind $24.6 million in funding for the Legacy Land Conservancy, based in Ann Arbor. In the letter, Dingell urges USDA to fully and fairly consider an appeal filed by Legacy Land Conservancy to restore the funding.

“In June 2025, Legacy Land Conservancy and partners with the Southeast Michigan Conservation Coalition were informed that their $24.6M Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP ) award to preserve 4,000 acres of forest and farmland in southeast Michigan had been rescinded by USDA,” Dingell writes. “A majority of the awarded funds were to be used directly by the Southeast Michigan Conservation Coalition to strategically purchase conservation easements on private agricultural and forest lands, which help ensure that the land remains in agricultural production permanently.”

“The USDA’s decision to rescind the funding is especially concerning given that funding was made available by the 2024 Farm Bill that was appropriated by Congress,” Dingell continues. “While the funding was made available by the Farm Bill, USDA rescinded Southeast Michigan Conservation Coalition’s award on the basis that it had been reclassified as Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funding. On July 10th, 2025, the Legacy Land Conservancy filed an appeal in response to the Administration’s decision to rescind this vital funding. I strongly urge USDA to give this appeal serious consideration, as programs have been depending on this funding.”

“For five decades, Legacy Land Conservancy has been dedicated to strong protection of both private and public lands, advocating for water quality, habitat corridors, agricultural production, and trails that connect pieces of recreational land to one another,” Dingell concludes. “Funding the Legacy Land Conservancy goes far beyond enabling the organization to do this important work. It represents a meaningful investment in Michigan’s small businesses, local governments, farmers and ranchers, and conservation leaders… I strongly urge that USDA reconsider its decision to rescind this grant funding, and request that there is full and fair consideration of the appeal that was filed.”

Rep. Huffman Opposes Harmful Pipeline Legislation

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Jared Huffman Representing the 2nd District of California

September 18, 2025

Washington, D.C. – This week, U.S. Representative Jared Huffman (CA-02) issued the following statement regarding his opposition to the PIPES Act of 2025 in the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure:

“The PIPES Act of 2025 fails to adequately address the environmental crises and safety risks posed by our country’s outdated pipeline system, and I cannot support legislation that threatens the health and safety of all Americans,” said Rep. Huffman. “We’ve seen that communities can so easily be exposed to dangerous levels of carbon dioxide, and relaxing safety standards for natural gas pipelines would be detrimental. Pipeline developers also stand to make billions from taxpayer subsidies, yet local communities are left without the resources, training, or equipment to respond when disaster strikes – which has created an unacceptable imbalance.”

“Pipeline safety, environmental protection, climate responsibility, and transparency are not optional – they are integral to any pipeline infrastructure legislation that I would support. These decisions must respect community voices and tribal sovereignty, as no community should be forced to shoulder the risks of these projects without a meaningful say in the processes. Ignoring them is not just irresponsible – it’s dangerous, especially as this administration pushes pipeline projects without adequate oversight or safeguards,” Rep. Huffman concluded. “Until this bill meaningfully incorporates these protections, I cannot support it. Our communities deserve infrastructure that is safe, resilient, and aligned with our climate goals. We must do better.”

Rep. Huffman, Sen. Markey Introduce Bicameral Legislation to Address Transportation Climate, Safety, Affordability Crises

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Jared Huffman Representing the 2nd District of California

September 18, 2025

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Jared Huffman (CA-02), alongside Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), introduced the Generating Resilient, Environmentally Exceptional National (GREEN) Streets Act. This legislation would establish goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle miles traveled on public roads and prioritize federal investments in walking, biking, and transit infrastructure that reduce emissions, improve safety, and make travel more affordable.

Vehicle travel poses significant challenges for the environment, public safety, and families’ wallets. Since 2016, the transportation sector has been the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the United States, accounting for over 28 percent of total emissions. Additionally, nearly 40,000 people die in the U.S. every year in vehicle crashes. Finally, the cost of owning and operating one car costs American families on average $12,000 per year. The GREEN Streets Act would address these issues by giving Americans more choices in how they travel for daily trips.

“Reimagining our current models of highways, commutes, and road systems is integral to our fight against climate change,” said Rep. Huffman. “By investing in America’s transportation programs, we can make our communities safer, healthier, and more resilient. Our legislation, the GREEN Streets Act, would help hold federal and state decision-makers accountable for reducing carbon pollution and introduce innovative, green solutions to our communities. It’s a win-win: we can improve our transportation sector and restore the health of our communities while also taking key steps to advance our country’s clean energy goals.”

“The roadway safety crisis and the climate crisis have been hurtling full speed ahead and we need solutions that will bring them to a halt,” said Senator Markey. “It’s time we greenlight investments to build safer, more sustainable, and more affordable transportation infrastructure. Massachusetts is leading the country in making sure our transportation is green, reliable, and equitable, and I will continue to fight for bigger and bolder transportation opportunities across the country.”

The GREEN Streets Act is endorsed by the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Sierra Club, the Union of Concerned Scientists, Transportation for America, and the Coalition for Transit Justice.

Over 3,000 Join Congressman Brad Sherman’s Town Hall on ICE Raids, Shutdown Threat & Rising Political Violence

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA)

SHERMAN OAKS, CA – Last night, over 3,000 residents joined Congressman Brad Sherman’s (CA-32) Telephone Town Hall with Los Angeles Councilmember Traci Park and California Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin. The conversation centered around urgent local and national issues: ICE deportation raids across L.A., concerns over a possible government shutdown, rising political violence in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s death, and California’s response to Republican-led redistricting maneuvers. Guests also addressed wildfire recovery efforts and the conclusion of the state legislative session. Congressman Sherman has already hosted dozens of Town Halls this year, with last night being the eighth meeting open to all members of the public.

“From deportation raids to redistricting power grabs, folks are rightly worried,” said Congressman Sherman. “That’s why I continue hosting these Town Hall events – to cut through all the noise and provide the people I serve a proper forum for answers, accurate information, and reassurance that their concerns are being heard and addressed.”

Sherman opened the event by briefing constituents on the latest government funding negotiations, warning of a looming shutdown and emphasizing his commitment to keeping the government open and protecting vital programs without surrendering to extreme demands by House Republicans. He spoke forcefully about the rise in political violence, saying the fallout from Charlie Kirk’s death underscores the need for the country to de-escalate tensions and recommit to civil discourse.

Sherman next turned to the Trump Administration’s aggressive deportation raids targeting immigrant communities across Los Angeles. The Congressman recounted leading an August 11th Congressional oversight visit of an ICE Immigration Enforcement/Detention Facility in Downtown L.A., where he and fellow lawmakers scrutinized enforcement tactics and detention conditions. Sherman highlighted his office’s active casework on behalf of a Studio City green card holder still unjustly detained by ICE hundreds of miles away in Arizona. Sherman also urged constituents to know their rights if stopped by federal immigration officers. His office, he noted, stands ready to communicate directly with ICE and advocate on their behalf.

Congressman Sherman also discussed California’s mid-decade redistricting efforts to protect the state from partisan redistricting schemes like those recently executed in Texas. He warned that national Republicans are attempting to undermine fair representation and emphasized the need for California to defend its congressional districts from being diluted.

At the close of his opening statement, Congressman Sherman informed residents that he will join the East Valley Indivisibles’ United in Opposition Town Hall on September 25 in Sherman Oaks as a featured guest, where he will highlight his efforts in Congress to counter Trump’s agenda.

Councilmember Traci Park provided updates on recovery efforts following the Palisades Fire, highlighting housing assistance, infrastructure rebuilding, and long-term wildfire mitigation strategies. She emphasized the need for strong community collaboration and rapid response systems as fire seasons grow longer and more severe. Park closed her remarks by thanking Congressman Sherman for his leadership and partnership in advancing recovery efforts for affected communities.

Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin offered insight into California’s end-of-session legislation, highlighting bipartisan bills addressing public safety, mental health access, and digital privacy. She noted that these measures were designed to strengthen protections for families and communities across the state while ensuring California remains a leader in innovation and consumer rights. Irwin also underscored the importance of bipartisan cooperation in tackling complex challenges that impact residents’ daily lives.

During the Q&A portion of the event, constituents voiced deep concern over escalating ICE activity, with many asking how to protect vulnerable family members and neighbors. Sherman reiterated that his office is actively engaged in defending immigrant rights and can intervene directly in certain cases. Others asked directly about the looming government shutdown, demanding assurances that Democratic lawmakers won’t give in to Republican brinksmanship. Sherman confirmed his refusal to compromise on key protections just to keep the government open.

Redistricting also sparked serious concern, with callers questioning how Republican moves in Texas could affect California’s own congressional map — and the future of their district. Sherman reassured constituents that Prop 50 is designed to prevent retaliatory or politically motivated redistricting and promised to fight to maintain fair and equal representation for Californians in Congress.

Congressman Sherman closed by thanking residents for their participation and reaffirming his commitment to keeping the lines of communication open. “I’m grateful to the many residents who continue to participate in every one of our Town Hall meetings and who continue to demonstrate that our democracy works best when people stay informed and stay engaged.”

During the Town Hall, Sherman requested input from residents by asking a series of survey questions about their thoughts and concerns. The results of the survey questions are as follows:

1) Do you support the California Legislature’s decision to put redistricting on the ballot (Proposition 50)?

-SUPPORT: 84%

-OPPOSE: 8%

-UNSURE: 7%

2) Is it good use of taxpayer dollars to spend over $1 million per day to deploy the National Guard to DC?

-YES: 7%

-NO: 90%

-UNSURE: 3%

3) Do you support the release of the full Epstein files, only making necessary redactions to protect the identity of victims?

-YES, RELEASE THEM ALL: 95%

-YES, BUT LET TRUMP MAKE REDACTIONS: 1%

-NO: 2%

-UNSURE: 2%
