Know Your Immigration Rights

If you or a loved one encounter immigration enforcement officials, it is essential that you know your rights and have prepared your household for all possible outcomes.

Ask for a warrant: The Fourth Amendment of the Constitution protects you from unreasonable search and seizure. You do not have to open your door until you see a valid warrant to enter your home or search your belongings.

Your right to remain silent: The Fifth Amendment protects your right to remain silent and not incriminate yourself. You are not required to share any personal information such as your place of birth, immigration status or criminal history.

Always consult an attorney: You have a right to speak with an attorney. You do not have to sign anything or hand officials any documents without speaking to an attorney. Try to identify and consult one in advance.

Higgins Exposes EPA Weaponization in Oversight Subcommittee Hearing

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) chaired an Oversight Subcommittee on Federal Law Enforcement hearing to expose the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) weaponization and overly aggressive regulatory enforcement that targets small business owners.

In his opening statements, Congressman Higgins said, “The EPA’s enforcement actions involved raids on shops by teams of armed EPA agents who intimidate small businesses with threats of criminal prosecution. If achieved, these prosecutions would deprive targeted individuals of their right to vote, their Second Amendment rights, not to mention the destruction of their businesses.”

Later in the hearing, Congressman Higgins questioned Louisiana business owner Kory Willis about the impact of the EPA’s weaponized enforcement on his livelihood. In his testimony, Mr. Willis revealed that in the course of his dealings with the EPA, he and his family lost “probably over $100 million” of business.

Watch Rep. Higgins’ questioning here.

In his closing statements, Congressman Higgins said, “The federal government crushed an American family’s lives because they were alleged to be in violation of some regulatory complexity. Is this really the country we want to live in? We want tactical teams hitting American homes under no criminal investigation on an alleged regulatory violation?”

Speaker Johnson: If Democrats Wants to Shut Down the Government, They Will Own the Consequences

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04)

WASHINGTON — This evening, Speaker Johnson joined Bret Baier on Fox News’ Special Report to address House Republicans’ plan to keep the government open with a clean, short-term continuing resolution and to call out Congressional Democrats for attempting to inject $1.5 trillion in unrelated, partisan provisions into the government funding process.

“Republicans are going to do the responsible thing; we will pass a CR here tomorrow out of the House. I suspect and it sounds like we won’t have many Democrats to assist in that,” Speaker Johnson said.

Watch Speaker Johnson’s full interview here.

On Republican efforts to keep the government open:

We’ve been working hard to get the House back to the regular appropriations order and we’ve achieved that in the House in a bipartisan fashion. They passed all 12 appropriations bills through the committee, three of them off the floor. The Senate passed three bills. Remember the old videos on Saturday mornings about how a bill becomes a law? If the House and the Senate disagree on an appropriation spending bill, they go to a conference committee to work it out. We voted to do that. All this is working well, but we’re coming up on the end of the fiscal year, September 30, so we need a few more weeks to finish this good work.

So, what we did in a responsible manner as Republicans in charge, is we offered a totally clean short-term CR to get that job done. Chuck Schumer saw that, and he returned a counteroffer that is filled with partisan wish lists and poison pills and demands. It includes, for example Bret, what Chuck Schumer is arguing for, he wants to reinstate free health care for illegal aliens. He wants to add $500 million to prop up liberal media outlets, and he wants to add a massive $1.4 trillion spending hike to what should be a simple seven week stop-gap funding measure. We can’t do that. We’re not going to do it.

On private companies and the freedom of speech:

My background is in the courts. I was a federal court litigator, I literally defended free speech as a career for about 20 years, religious freedom and the freedom of speech and our fundamental rights. We have to jealously guard that, and I think we are. ABC is a private company. You’ve heard a lot of consternation about private companies firing or reprimanding employees for going online and glorifying the tragic death of a young father and young husband, and it’s detestable.

So, in the private employer space, you have all the right in the world to have standards for your company, standards for your broadcast brand, and you know they get to make that decision. And I don’t think that’s violation of the First Amendment. You don’t have a First Amendment right to stay employed if you’re going to engage in that kind of crazy action online, and in many cases, it really is inciting further violence. It’s a serious problem.

On upholding the security of Members of Congress:

Look, I always want to be quick to say members of Congress are safe. They do have substantial security measures in their residence and on their person. But when you have a big event like we had with the tragic shooting of our friend Charlie Kirk, it draws attention to it, and we’re in a constant process of improvement, making sure that we have the latest and greatest technology and resources available. So that’s the process we’ve been going through. We’re adding additional funding and measures to ensure that everybody is safe and that they can do their job representing the people from back home. I think this also has an element of awareness too. So we’re doing training with members and offering every resource we possibly can to ensure that we can keep this system going.

Congressman Ruiz: You know, I believe the Bill of Rights defines the core of our country, and I hope my Republican colleagues recognize their importance. They certainly recognize the importance of the Second Amendment, but you can’t have the second if you don’t have the First Amendment.

While you may not agree with the content, canceling ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ out of fear of retaliation from a President who quite literally can’t take a joke, clearly infringes on our First Amendment right to free speech.

And I look forward to our upcoming FCC oversight hearing, where I will have the opportunity to question Commissioner Carr about these action.

Jayapal Hosts Shadow Hearing on Trump’s Assault on Families and Communities

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (7th District of Washington)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Immigration, Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, today hosted a Shadow Hearing titled Kidnapped and Disappeared: Trump’s Assault Destroys U.S. Families and Communities. This hearing examined the human costs of deportation on U.S. families and communities. It is the third in her series, Kidnapped and Disappeared, that highlights the multifaceted impacts of Trump’s mass deportation agenda.

“Donald Trump lied to the American people. He lied when he said he would bring grocery prices down. He lied when he said he would release the Epstein Files. And he sure as hell lied when it came to immigration enforcement,” said Jayapal. “This indiscriminate immigration enforcement has led to an increased number of family separations. According to a report earlier this week, more than 400 children have been sent to Office of Refugee Settlement shelters from the interior of the United States. In some cases, parents are being told their children will be taken away unless they give up their right to a hearing and to their country of birth. In other cases, children who arrived as unaccompanied minors are being sent back to government shelters for months after they had already been released to vetted sponsors. Families belong together, today we heard absolutely heartbreaking stories about how so many have been ripped apart — and we will continue to shine a light on these horrifying cases.”

The witnesses at this hearing included testimony from Chelsea White, a U.S. citizen whose husband was detained and deported following a traffic stop and who has relocated her three U.S. citizen children to Mexico to keep her family together, Mimi Lettunich, who is caring for  four U.S. citizen children who were detained and interrogated by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), and whose parents and grandmother remain in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, Janessa Goldbeck, a Marine Corps veteran and the Chief Executive Officer of Vet Voice Foundation, Robert Lynch, author of “Warning Signs of Economic Harms from Deportations” and Professor of Economics Emeritus at Washington College, and Nayna Gupta, Policy Director at the American Immigration Council.

“I came to Congress today because families like mine deserve better. We deserve policies that recognize the human cost of deportation. Our children, especially those with disabilities, deserve the chance to thrive. Families belong together, without being forced to choose between love and survival,” said Chelsea White

“A mother and her 4 American children were disappeared by our government, nearly deported under false pretenses, and stripped of their rights. It’s critical that we alter the precedent that is forming, not just for this family, but for all the others who don’t have representation and are being moved out as swiftly as possible. We are beyond awareness. Everybody is looking for action,” said Mimi Lettunich.

“Four mass deportation episodes have been carefully studied by economists. In each of these episodes, proponents of the deportations asserted that the policy would raise wages, grow the economy, and create jobs for American workers because immigrants “are stealing our jobs”. But in each case the opposite happened: American workers lost jobs, their wages did not go up, and the economy did not grow. We are seeing in the Construction, Agricultural, and Leisure and Hospitality industries the harmful economic effects of the deportations that are currently taking place. If deportations continue apace or further accelerate, we can expect that the data will increasingly reflect economic injury throughout the economy,” said Robert Lynch.

“For more than two centuries, America has kept a bright line between the military and civilian law enforcement. That line protects our freedom. Soldiers are trained to fight wars, not to run domestic immigration detention centers. Forcing them into the role of immigration enforcers tears them from their families, pits them against their own communities, costs taxpayers millions, and weakens readiness for real emergencies,” said Janessa Goldbeck.

“While nannies disappear from local parks and masked agents drag immigrant fathers from cars, this administration continues to use safety as a pretext for mass deportation, but it is mass deportation itself that makes all Americans less safe. They are diverting resources away from real public safety priorities to focus on low-level immigration arrests of hardworking and longstanding members of our communities while eroding public trust in law enforcement, which undermines safety for everyone,” said Nayna Gupta.

The hearing was attended by Jamie Raskin (MD-08), Becca Balint (VT-AL), Judy Chu (CA-28), Maxine Dexter (OR-03), John Garamendi (CA-08), Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04), Delia Ramirez (IL-03), Deborah Ross (NC-02), Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), and Juan Vargas (CA-52).

Congressional Coal Caucus Celebrates House Passage of Bill to Reestablish National Coal Council

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA)

The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 3015, the National Coal Council Reestablishment Act. The measure, introduced by U.S. Congressman Michael Rulli (R-OH), helps codify President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14241 by reestablishing and making permanent the National Coal Council.

Congressional Coal Caucus Co-Chairs U.S. Representatives Dan Meuser (R-PA), Carol Miller (R-WV), Harriet Hageman (R-WY) and Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement following passage of the bill:

“The ‘War on Coal’, which started under the Obama Administration, attempted to halt our country’s use of coal, in turn harming American jobs, injuring domestic steelmaking and all but eliminating a reliable source of power. The Biden Administration perpetuated similar anti-coal policies and chose to shut down a critical public-private forum, the National Coal Council.

“Thanks to the actions of President Trump, beautiful, clean coal can once again flourish as a great American asset.

“We commend Representative Rulli’s actions to help reestablish the National Coal Council in statute and solidify a critical lifeline for coal in the Executive Branch.”

Representative Rulli released the following statement:

“For decades, the National Coal Council was a powerful voice for coal and a tireless champion for American workers and communities. Coal has reliably fueled our factories, powered our homes, and helped build the greatest economy the world has ever known – it’s ridiculous to neglect it.

“We need common-sense, energy policies that keep coal in the mix, strengthen our grid, and protect good-paying jobs. Codifying the National Coal Council into law ensures that politics doesn’t get in the way of good policy.  I’m grateful to House leadership and my colleagues for voting to restore this vital council and secure America’s energy future.”

BACKGROUND

In 2021, the Biden Administration terminated the National Coal Council’s charter.

In April 2025, President Trump unveiled an Executive Order to reinvigorate America’s beautiful clean coal industry.

All Coal Caucus Co-Chairs were present at the White House for a ceremony when President Trump signed the Executive Order.

In June 2025, the U.S. Department of Energy announced it would begin the process to select and vet prospective members of the National Coal Council.

Speaker Johnson Encourages Unanimous Support for Charlie Kirk Resolution on House Floor

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04)

WASHINGTON — This afternoon, Speaker Johnson spoke on the House floor in support of his resolution honoring the life of Charlie Kirk. He encouraged his colleagues in the House to send a bipartisan message that political violence – and the glorification and celebration of violence – are profoundly wrong and unacceptable.

“By voting for this resolution, we’re making a strong statement on behalf of the Congress,” Speaker Johnson said. “We’re telling our constituents, for one thing, that political violence, but also the glorification and celebration of that violence, are profoundly wrong, and that goes against everything we stand for as Americans.”

Watch Speaker Johnson’s full remarks here.

Below are Speaker Johnson’s remarks as delivered:

Mr. Speaker, this has been a tough week in the country. I think I’ve spoken at three or four vigils already. I’ll be attending our late friend Charlie Kirk’s funeral on Sunday, as many of us will, to pay what will be our last respects, but the honor of his memory will go on.

The last week has been difficult because people are shaken by this in a way that we’ve not seen the country moved in quite some time. I’ve described it as if a shadow has been cast across the country by the untimely death of our dear friend, and the way it was done in such a hateful, heinous manner online for people to view. It’s been disturbing.

My heart’s gone out, in particular, to all the students around this country who are so closely associated with Charlie Kirk’s organization, Turning Point. There are 3,500 plus chapters of Turning Point on universities, college campuses, high school campuses across America, and so many of those students felt personally connected to Charlie because his voice resonated with them and it helped inform their worldview and the way they see politics in society.

And when he was lost in such an abrupt and tragic manner, they felt it to their core. I’ve been so burdened and disturbed for that. I’ve been praying for all those kids, the untold number of young people around the country who are so disturbed, and frankly, need trauma counseling themselves from what they’ve just seen and witnessed.

But in the midst of all this, the thing that encourages me is that I believe in the same promises of scripture that Charlie did, and I’ve been reminded a lot of the passage of scripture that says the light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it.

Some translations of the Bible say the darkness cannot comprehend it. And I think that’s true. And what I’ve said to all these students and what I’ve shared in these vigils is the same refrain to summarize the best way to honor the legacy of this singular voice in our culture, not just in the conservative movement, but in the recent history of America in the last several decades.

The best way to honor the work and the legacy and the ministry of Charlie Kirk is to do what he did, and that is to advance the principles that he advanced, and to adopt his approach. What I mean by that is the principles that Charlie advanced were the good things Scripture talks about.

We focus on the noble and praiseworthy and the good. And Charlie did that. He focused on things like faith, family, freedom, virtue, honor, and patriotism. Charlie believed in America. He believed in the promise of America and the creed of America, that we’re all made in the image of God, the self-evident truth that God is the one that gives us our rights, and not the government. Those principles are worth fighting for.

Charlie used to quote Ronald Reagan, as I do all the time. Reagan reminded us, freedom is not inherited in the bloodstream. It has to be fought for, protected, taught, and passed along to the generations that come behind us so that they will know the same liberty and opportunity and security that too many of us have taken for granted too often.

Charlie believed that, and he advanced those principles every single day in every venue that he was able. But he did it in a manner that we should emulate. Because when I tell the young people that they should adopt the practices and the manner the approach of Charlie Kirk, what I mean by that is that he was never motivated by hatred for someone on the other side of that debate.

Charlie, to the contrary, was motivated by love because he believed in what Scripture says, there are these three things that remain, faith, hope, and love. And love is the greatest of all. Love overcomes, love conquers, and that’s what motivated our friend.

And so, even though he could defeat anybody in a debate, so often, and I saw this myself, when he would vanquish someone in a policy argument, he was the first person after that to reach out a hand of friendship or offer an arm around the shoulder of someone who he had just defeated in a contest.

Why? Because it wasn’t about winning the policy, it wasn’t about at the end of the day, really the policy arguments, it was about the people. And Charlie loved vigorous debate, but he loved people more. That is the legacy of our friend.

A lot of things have been said about him. And you know, when someone is on the air, when they’re a ubiquitous voice in all forms of media all the time, 24 hours a day, you can go cherry pick one line or phrase or something that they said in a long context or a long discussion, and you can pick anything out and make someone portray them to be something they were not.

But the people who were doing that did not know Charlie Kirk, and all of us who did will attest. Every single person who spent any time with Charlie Kirk will tell you that he was a good and godly man, not a perfect man. None of us are. There was only one ever perfect man, and he was God and man. But Charlie Kirk was a good man who loved his fellow man and gave his life literally in the pursuit of advancing truth.

And so, the very least that we can do is honor him, and especially at a time in the country when people are anxious and frightened. In moments like this, when political instability and fear are pervasive, it’s incumbent upon leaders to step forward and stand in the breach and do what is right. And so, by voting for this resolution today, we’re making a strong statement on behalf of the Congress.

We’re telling our constituents, for one thing, that political violence, but also the glorification and celebration of that violence, are profoundly wrong, and that goes against everything we stand for as Americans.

Charlie stood for exactly the opposite. He stood for what was good in America, what is virtuous, worthy of protection and preservation, and we honor his memory by doing this simple act of passing this resolution. I can’t imagine that anyone would vote against it or vote present or pretend as though this is not exactly the right thing to do.

So, I certainly hope that we can pass this resolution unanimously today, just as it should be passed. And I thank again, my dear friend and colleague, Congressman Andy Biggs of Arizona. Our hearts go out to the people of Arizona, as they do to everyone who is mourning this death.

But I will tell you this, the truth that Charlie advanced will go forward more loudly and more profoundly than it ever has before, and that’s the encouragement we have. With that, I yield back.

House Republicans Codify President Trump’s Executive Orders to Unleash American Energy Dominance

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04)

WASHINGTON — Speaker Johnson issued the following statement after House Republicans passed three pieces of legislation this week to support President Trump and Republicans’ promise to unleash American energy dominance.

“Republicans are delivering on our promise to strengthen the grid, create American jobs, and lower energy costs for American families. This week, House Republicans passed three pieces of key legislation to build on the energy provisions within the historic Working Families Tax Cuts and codify President Trump’s Executive Orders to unleash American energy. As Democrats continue to push radical, job-killing, impossible-to-attain green agendas – Republicans are focused on real solutions that grow the economy and put American workers first. Together with President Trump, Republicans in Congress are helping pave the way for a return to American energy dominance.”

House Adopted Legislation to Help Unleash American Energy Dominance:

H.R. 1047 – The Grid Reliability and Infrastructure Deployment (GRID) Power Act (Sponsored by Rep. Troy Balderson): Expands access to reliable and affordable electricity by expediting interconnection requests for dispatchable energy resources and help stabilize the bulk power system.

H.R. 3015 – National Coal Council Reestablishment Act (Sponsored by Rep. Michael Rulli): Reestablishes the National Coal Council to support coal as a vital source of baseload energy power and to preserve energy jobs across the country.

H.R. 3062 – Promoting Cross-Border Energy Infrastructure Act (Sponsored by Rep. Julie Fedorchak): Streamlines the permitting process for cross-border energy infrastructure projects to strengthen American energy security and reduce regulatory delays.
