Congressman Krishnamoorthi Joins Illinois Delegation Colleagues in Requesting a Meeting with ICE Field Office Director Russell Hott

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (8th District of Illinois)

SCHAUMBURG – Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) joined Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth as well as every Democratic member of the Illinois congressional delegation in requesting a meeting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Field Office Director Russell Hott about so-called ‘Operation Midway Blitz’ and the oversight of the ICE Broadview Processing Facility. The letter comes following troubling reports about the Broadview facility and several attempts by members of the delegation to conduct congressional oversight within the facility.

“Oversight of this facility is desperately needed as legal service providers and our constituents have raised concerns about the poor conditions at Broadview,” the Members wrote in the letter. “These reports allege unsanitary bathroom facilities; spreading illness; continued overcrowding; detainees sleeping on the floor or in chairs; a lack of access to food, water or hygiene products; restricted communications to family members and attorneys; and an inability to access medication.”

Despite ICE agreeing to a meeting with the delegation in lieu of a visit to the facility on September 26, 2025, the agency has now postponed that meeting to an unconfirmed date in October. ICE continues to bar the delegation’s access to Broadview, despite Congress’s inherent authority to conduct oversight of ICE facilities. In the letter, the members also included a list of questions to be answered by DHS at the forthcoming meeting.

The full letter is available here.

Krishnamoorthi: After Gutting Anti-Hunger Programs, Trump Now Cancels Report Tracking Hungry Americans

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (8th District of Illinois)

SCHAUMBURG, IL – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) today condemned the Trump Administration for scrapping the USDA’s Household Food Security Report, a vital tool for tracking hunger in America. In July’s “Large Lousy Law” budget, Republicans cut more than $186 billion from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the nation’s largest anti-hunger program, and now the Trump Administration has cancelled the annual Department of Agriculture Report that shows how many Americans are going hungry.

“In July’s Large Lousy Law, Republicans gutted the very program that helps families put food on the table, and now the Trump Administration has cancelled the annual report that shows how many Americans are going hungry,” said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. “As someone who learned firsthand as a child the difference anti-hunger programs make for families working to get back on their feet, I know what is at stake. Turning a blind eye to hungry children doesn’t make the problem go away—it only leaves struggling families invisible and without the support they deserve. As rising costs in the Trump economy push more families to the brink, we need to restore SNAP funding and guarantee the best data to meet the needs of seniors and working families.”

Rep. Norcross Releases Statement on the Republican Government Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Donald Norcross (1st District of New Jersey)

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) released the following statement after President Trump and House Republicans shut down the federal government.

“Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House, and refuse to meet with Democrats to keep the government open. Let me be clear: this is a Republican government shutdown. Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress would rather shut the government down than lower your healthcare costs,” said Congressman Donald Norcross. “Earlier this year, Trump and Republicans cut Medicaid and Medicare in the Big Ugly Bill, and now they are once again working to make your healthcare more expensive. While Republicans are on vacation, my Democratic colleagues and I are in Washington, ready to vote to reopen the government with a bipartisan agreement that protects Americans’ healthcare.”

If Congress does not extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits immediately, hundreds of thousands of people will lose their healthcare, and millions more will see their costs skyrocket. If Republicans get their way, 24,000 individuals in New Jersey’s First Congressional District will see their healthcare costs rise.

Larsen Releases Statement on the Government Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Rick Larsen (2nd Congressional District Washington)

Today, Representative Rick Larsen (WA-02) released the following statement about the government shutdown:

“Prices are up, the economy is down, and now Republicans in Congress have shut down the government to double down on the health care crisis they created.

“Yesterday, I met with Washington Health Benefit Exchange leaders and other state health care groups to hear about the local impacts of President Trump and my Republican colleagues gutting Medicaid and letting essential health care tax credits expire. The people I represent cannot afford skyrocketing health care costs. Because of the Trump administration, hard-working families are facing the prospect of having to choose between paying rent, buying groceries, or going to the doctor.

“Democrats were in D.C. until midnight yesterday trying to get a deal to avoid the damage Trump and Republicans are doing and keep the government open. My Republicans colleagues, on the other hand, fled town and refused to come to the negotiating table. Their position is that we should do nothing to address the health care crisis and a struggling economy.

“I, alongside House Democrats, will continue to fight to lower the cost of health care and the cost of living.”

Rep. Larsen released a government shutdown FAQ page with information for community members about the local impacts of federal agency closures.

Over the weekend, Rep. Larsen published an op-ed about the potential for a shutdown. The piece is available below and here.

Comment: Democrats holding fast to avoid a health care crisis
Republicans would rather see a government shutdown than bargain on restoring health care coverage.

At a time when families are already struggling with high prices and a weak job market, Republicans in Congress are doubling down on a health care crisis of their own making.

Deep Medicaid cuts, major changes to Medicare coverage, and the pending expiration of essential health care tax credits are creating immense uncertainty in the health care market. Employers are bracing for the largest annual increase in health care costs in 15 years and mass layoffs are hitting local hospitals hard.

Funding for the federal government runs out next week, which threatens to add more instability to a weakening economy. Instead of working with Democrats to keep the government open, President Donald Trump has walked away from the negotiating table. Republicans are going all in on a government funding plan that will cause 80,000 Washingtonians to lose their health insurance and raise health care prices for all of us.

In August, I met with a member of the community who the Republicans’ government funding plan will harm: Kathryn, a small business owner who lives in Bellingham.

Since she and her husband are self-employed, Kathryn told me that her family paid roughly $30,000 this year for health insurance. If the Republican government funding plan goes through, they expect to have to pay $50,000 to $55,000 next year; more than they can afford. Without tax credits, this hard-working family will be priced out of their health insurance.

Kathryn wrote to my office: “And why are we in this position? So Jeff Bezos can get a big tax cut. We need the [tax credits], and Jeff can give up some of his tax cut to pay for it.”

I couldn’t agree more.

These health care tax credits create economic freedom for small businesses and entrepreneurs to pursue opportunities they otherwise may not have. Starting a business takes risk, and these credits ensure unaffordable health care costs for your family don’t hold you back.

Allowing these credits to expire is a devastating continuation of the health care crisis the Trump administration started back in July, when the Big Ugly Law made the largest cuts to Medicaid in its history. Because of the Big Ugly Law, more than 328,000 Washingtonians will lose their health care insurance in the next few years.

Taking health care away from hard-working people hurts all of us. Our family, friends and neighbors will be forced to skip or delay getting the medical help that they need. More uninsured individuals create more risk for the health care system, and insurance companies pay for this risk by raising premiums.

The Big Ugly Law’s funding cuts are already forcing local hospitals to scale back. Providence Swedish in Edmonds and Seattle Children’s Hospital collectively have laid off more than 100 staff in Everett, citing cuts to Medicaid and Medicare in the Big Ugly Law as part of the reason for the decision. Island Health in Anacortes expects Big Ugly Law funding cuts to cost millions, threatening its long-term sustainability.

The Trump administration and Republicans have pushed the health care system to the brink. Now, they are shutting down the government so they can kick the health care system off a cliff.

At midnight Wednesday, funding for the federal government will run out. Thousands of Northwest Washington state workers may be furloughed. Local farms may stop receiving disaster relief dollars. Active-duty members of the military may be required to report for duty but not receive paychecks.

The Trump administration is also threatening to permanently layoff massive numbers of federal employees if a shutdown occurs, effectively using hard-working civil servants — with families to support — as political pawns. More layoffs will further weaken the economy and make it harder for Americans to access critical services the government provides.

A Republican government shutdown would be yet another blow to the economy courtesy of the Trump administration. Because of reckless trade wars and stupid tariff policies, prices are up and the economy is down. In August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics issued the worst jobs report in the past 15 years and reported the biggest jump in grocery prices in the past three years. Electricity prices are 6.2 percent higher than in the same month in 2024.

Republicans are inflicting more pain on Northwest Washington state families so they can double down on a health care crisis of their own making. Alongside House Democrats, I am fighting to lower the cost of health care and the cost of living for the people I represent.

Republicans must come to the negotiating table and work with Democrats to reverse the damage this administration has done. I will keep voting and keep fighting to make health care affordable and accessible, and to get our economy back on the right track.

U.S. Representative Rick Larsen, D-Everett, represents Washington’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes part of Snohomish County and all of Whatcom, Skagit, Island and San Juan counties. LEADER JEFFRIES ON CNN: “THE REPUBLICANS KNOW THEY’RE LYINGABOUT THIS ISSUE”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District of New York)

Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries joined CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper to correct Republican disinformation about the harmful government shutdown that they’ve created and make clear that House Democrats will continue to fight for the healthcare of the American people.

JAKE TAPPER: And we’re back with our politics lead, the government shutdown, the spending talk stalemate here on Capitol Hill. Democrats so far not willing to bend on their demands for Obamacare subsidies to be extended and more. Here with me now is the leader of the Democrats in the House, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democrat of New York. Thanks for being with me, Leader Jeffries. So you maintain Democrats are ready to come to the table any time with anyone at any place on any spending agreement. Vice President JD Vance today said the President’s hoping to—coming to the table on healthcare once the government is funded. Where are we at negotiations right now?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, we haven’t heard from the White House since the White House meeting on Monday. The President has been behaving somewhat erratically and in unconventional fashion in the context of the government shutting down. Clearly, they wanted to shut the government down, unfortunately. We’re ready to work together to bring it back open, but to do it in a way where we enact a spending agreement that’s bipartisan, that meets the needs of the American people, while, at the same time, addresses the Republican healthcare crisis that is devastating everyday Americans all across the country.

JAKE TAPPER: So you said erratic, and I believe you used the word unhinged the other day.

LEADER JEFFRIES: I did.

JAKE TAPPER: Are you trying to draw a line between President Trump’s acuity—his mental state, and what’s going on here with the shutdown?

LEADER JEFFRIES: No, no, no. I’m actually referring to some of his social media posts, which didn’t seem to make a lot of sense.

JAKE TAPPER: The sombrero and the mustache?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Correct. Well, it would seem to me that as the President of the United States, on the brink of a government shutdown, if you actually wanted to bring everyone together to try to get to a resolution in a common-sense, bipartisan way, that’s not the type of behavior that we would see. So hopefully moving forward, whether it’s President Trump or Vice President Vance, Speaker Johnson, Leader Thune, that we’ll actually come together to have a conversation to figure out how we can get the government reopened immediately, stop this pain that Trump is inflicting on hardworking American taxpayers and at the same time, resolve the Republican healthcare crisis, particularly as it relates to the Affordable Care Act and their refusal to extend the tax credits, which is going to result in tens of millions of Americans experiencing dramatically increased premiums, co-pays and deductibles.

JAKE TAPPER: So right now, JD Vance says he’s talking to other Democrats in the Senate. Three Democrats, or three people that caucus with Democrats—Angus King of Maine, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Cortez Masto of Nevada. They voted to proceed—for the continuing resolution. They only need five more Democrats. Are you worried at all about the more moderate Democrats caving?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Not at all. In fact, what I think—constructive conversations are positive. I don’t know that these conversations have been constructive, because for the last several months, what we’ve seen from the Trump administration is that they’ve adopted a my-way-or-the-highway approach. Now, if you adopt a my-way-or-the-highway approach and then you drop on us a partisan spending bill that continues to gut the healthcare of the American people, then the reality is, they are going to drive us toward the government shutdown that they’ve now created.

JAKE TAPPER: The partisan spending bill—is that the One Big Beautiful Bill or the continuing resolution? Because this continuing resolution just funds the government at the current level.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, actually, the continuing resolution that they have presented to the Congress is a partisan bill. House Democrats voted against it in March because it hurt veterans, hurt seniors, hurt children, hurt child care affordability, hurt housing affordability and hurt healthcare, which is why we opposed it.

JAKE TAPPER: You’re saying that Chuck Schumer then voted for a Republican partisan bill—because he voted for that, so did nine other Democrats in the March.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, Chuck Schumer did explain his views on the merits of that bill at the time. I don’t think he ever disputed that there were challenging parts of that legislation. The partisan bill is the one that’s before us now. A bipartisan agreement on spending had actually been reached in December. Bipartisan majorities in the House and the Senate. Joe Biden signed it into law, then-President-elect Donald Trump blessed it as well.

JAKE TAPPER: So let me ask you about a provision that the Republicans are talking about quite a bit. I know you want to talk about, and Democrats want to talk about, extending the Obamacare subsidies, which expire at the end of 2025. But they talk about the provisions, and it’s right here, subtitle E, and this has to do with the repeal of healthcare subtitle changes, and specifically what it is. How they characterize it is you want to give health insurance to undocumented immigrants. I understand that’s not really an accurate depiction, but what it does do is—

LEADER JEFFRIES: It’s a lie.

JAKE TAPPER: It’s a lie, but what you support does bring back funding for emergency Medicaid to hospitals, some of which does pay for undocumented immigrants and people who don’t have health insurance. And also, there is this provision, and it’s not about undocumented immigrants. It’s about people with asylum seekers and people with temporary protected status, et cetera, et cetera, but about their ability to get Medicaid. So they’re non-citizens. They’re not undocumented. They’re not illegal. Why even include that in a bill, knowing that they’re going to seize right upon that and use that to message? I understand that when you retake the House, you can get whatever you want passed, but at this point?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, what we’re doing is fighting to protect the healthcare of the American people against the largest cut to Medicaid ever. 14 million American citizens are going to lose their healthcare as a result of what Republicans did with their One Big Ugly Bill.

JAKE TAPPER: You’re talking about the subsidies again, but I’m talking about the non-citizens.

LEADER JEFFRIES: No, no. No, no. I’m talking about the Medicaid cuts, that document that you just showed me. That was the One Big Ugly Bill. 14 million Americans are going to lose access to healthcare. Their hospitals, their nursing homes, their community-based health clinics are closing because of what the Republicans have done. These are hard-working American taxpayers, and the Republicans know they’re lying about this issue. By the way, current federal law is clear. Taxpayer dollars cannot be spent on Medicaid or Medicare or the Affordable Care Act related to undocumented immigrants, and not a single Democrat has raised the issue of trying to reverse that federal law. What we are trying to do is save the healthcare of the American people, lower their costs and cancel these cuts.

JAKE TAPPER: Do you not think that the provisions that provide healthcare for non-citizens muddies that message?

LEADER JEFFRIES: No. You’re referring to emergency care that some states might administer based on state law. We’re talking about federal law. We don’t have the ability to change state law.

JAKE TAPPER: So let me ask you about this threat from Russ Vought, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget. He announced that the White House—Vought, I’m sorry. He announced that the White House was freezing roughly $18 billion in New York City infrastructure, ‘due to unconstitutional DEI principles.’ He added that’s going to impact the Hudson Tunnel Project and the Second Avenue Subway. I doubt it’s a coincidence that you and Leader Schumer are both from New York, probably even occasionally ride that subway or use that tunnel. What’s your response?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, it’s an attack on working-class Americans. It’s an attack on good-paying union jobs. It’s an attack on teachers and social workers and nurses and firefighters and police officers, who are going to rely upon the transportation that will be enhanced by those projects, not just in New York City, but in New York State, as well as in New Jersey and in Connecticut. It’s interesting to me. I wonder why Mike Lawler or others haven’t said anything. It’s going to have an adverse impact on his constituents. But this is the type of thing that we’ve seen from the Trump administration. These people are obsessed with retribution as opposed to actually doing what they promised. They promised, Jake, to lower the high cost of living on day one. But costs aren’t going down in America. Costs are going up. Inflation is going up. America’s too expensive. The Trump tariffs—is making life more unaffordable for millions of Americans who are paying thousands of dollars more a year because of the erratic Republican policies. And now, they actually are going after these economic development, job-creating engines to hurt not Democrats or Republicans, to hurt hardworking American taxpayers.

JAKE TAPPER: One last thing before you go. I know you said you thought it was racist and bigoted—that sombrero and mustache AI image that President Trump put out.

LEADER JEFFRIES: That wasn’t simply my characterization. That was a broad characterization by a broad number of people.

JAKE TAPPER: JD Vance said he thought it was funny. Vice President Vance said he thought it was funny, and he said he didn’t understand why you thought it was racist because you’re not of Mexican heritage.

LEADER JEFFRIES: It was a xenophobic stereotype, which is why we’ve heard from many Latino organizations denouncing what took place. But the broader issue—I’m not going to dwell on the President’s erratic behavior in terms of the meme or the AI deepfake videos. The broader problem is it’s deeply unserious, and this is a serious moment. We need to reopen the government. We need to enact a spending agreement that’s bipartisan, that actually meets the needs of the American people and we need to address the Republican healthcare crisis.

JAKE TAPPER: Democratic Leader of the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries of New York. Thank you so much.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Thank you. Good to see you.

JAKE TAPPER: Good to see you as always. We’ll be right back.

Full press conference can be watched here.

Speaker Johnson Makes a Trio of Television Appearances on Day One of the Democrat-Led Government Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04)

WASHINGTON — After Senate Democrats rejected the clean, short-term continuing resolution for a third time today, Speaker Johnson made a trio of appearances on CNN, Newsmax, and Fox News to highlight the Democrats’ hypocrisy and urge Senate Democrats to reopen the government.

Watch Speaker Johnson on CNN here, Newsmax here, Fox News here

On Democrats repeatedly rejecting the clean, short-term, nonpartisan CR:

Last night, two Democrats and an independent flipped and came along with the Republicans. But it looks like, and what we expect, is that most of the Democrats in the Senate, again will reject the clean CR that we sent over. It’s clean, what that means is it’s nonpartisan. We didn’t add any Republican priorities or poison pills or gimmicks or tricks into that at all. It’s 24 pages. I mean, everybody can read it for themselves. It simply continues the Biden-era spending levels that Chuck Schumer and the Democrats have already supported in the past. They just did it most recently in March and gave long speeches about how it was so critically important that we not shut the government down. So, there’s nothing for me to give, there’s nothing to negotiate. I don’t have any Republican priorities to put on the table because we sent over a clean CR and that’s why none of this makes sense.

On the Democrat-led shutdown inflicting pain on the American people:

And I think as this thing goes forward, and more pain is felt by the American people because of the shutdown. I think they’re going to leave Chuck Schumer by himself in a corner that he painted himself into. Now let’s very quickly say, when we talk about pain for the American people, this is very real. I mean, what’s happening right now is not only do you have our troops, our military, our TSA agents, border patrol agents, working without pay, veterans, their services are being delayed also. What they’ve done by shutting the government down is they have stopped the WIC program. What is that? Women, Infants, and Children Nutrition Program. They’ve stopped mental health services and telemedicine for lower income, Medicaid and Medicare recipients who are getting healthcare at home. All those programs are going to stop. They have stopped now because Chuck Schumer decided to play politics for selfish reasons. It’s really shameful.

On Democrats not understanding their own provision to provide healthcare to illegal aliens:

That’s probably why the Democrats don’t understand what they filed. But if you interpret that and you get through all the subsections, what you realize is they’re trying to take out, in entirety, the reforms that we put into the big beautiful bill pertaining to health. And why is that so important? Because what we did was we strengthened the Medicaid program by making sure that ineligible recipients are not on the rolls. The CBO, the Congressional Budget Office, on August 25, published a letter and they said, this is going to do exactly what Republicans said. They estimate that 2.3 million illegal recipients for Medicaid will be pushed off the rolls because of our reforms and that it’s going to save $185 billion of taxpayer funds. So, they want to return all those ineligible people back to the rolls, and many of them are illegal aliens. That is a fact. And anybody who looks at it objectively has to say it’s true.

U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor Statement on Republican Health Care Crisis

Source: United States House of Representatives – Reprepsentative Kathy Castor (FL14)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (FL-14) released the following statement on the Republican Health Care Crisis:

“House Democrats are urging Republicans in Congress and President Trump to cancel the health care cuts, lower costs and address the burgeoning health care crisis. We must work together to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits that lower health care premiums and keep coverage within reach for millions of families. Over 4 million Floridians – and more than half a million Tampa Bay area residents – are facing astronomical cost increases unless Congress acts now.

“As a result of Republican inaction, tens of millions of Americans – including 4.1 million Floridians – are beginning to receive notices that their premiums are about to skyrocket. While families are stretched thin, President Trump and Congressional Republicans have only made things worse – driving up costs with reckless health care and economic policies while handing massive tax breaks to the wealthy and well-connected. Our neighbors deserve better.

“I am committed to standing up for affordable health care and working families. Republicans must end their obstruction, join us in lowering costs and keep the government functioning for our people.”

If Republicans don’t act to extend the ACA premium tax credits:

  1. Health care premiums will more than double in 2026.
  2. Nationally, health insurers have proposed median premium increases of 18%, nearly triple the proposed increases of 6% in 2024 and 7% in 2025.
  3. In Florida, the proposed premium increases range from 18.73% to 40.81% depending on the insurer.
  4. An estimated 5 million Americans – including 1.4 million Floridians – will lose their coverage due to the expiration, combined with ACA policy changes in the GOP’s Big, Ugly Bill.

Congresswoman Norma Torres Statement on Republican Government Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Norma Torres (35th District of California)

October 01, 2025

Washington D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Norma Torres released the following statement on the federal government shutdown caused by President Trump and Congressional Republicans’ refusal to protect healthcare for hard working families:

“Today marks the first day of the government shutdown. President Trump and Congressional Republicans canceled the workweek ahead of a looming crisis to protect tax cuts for billionaires, while families in the Inland Empire struggle to afford doctor visits, prescriptions, and hospital care. Nearly 40,000 people in California’s 35th Congressional District could lose coverage through Covered California, forcing impossible choices between rent, food, or healthcare.

Republicans control the White House, the Senate, and the House. They had the power to negotiate a solution but walked away. This shutdown is on them. I call on my Republican colleagues to return to Washington, negotiate in good faith, and stop punishing working families for their reckless priorities.”

Democrat Government Shutdown Means Seniors, Veterans, and Families Pay the Price

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04)

WASHINGTON — The reckless, Democrat-led government shutdown will hurt working families, seniors, veterans, and law enforcement. House Republicans passed a clean, responsible continuing resolution to keep the government open nearly two weeks ago. But Washington Democrats, caving to the demands of their radical base to shut down, are putting politics first — and forcing everyday Americans to pay the price.

Economic Damage That Never Comes Back

Seniors and Families Put at Risk

  • Association of Mature American Citizens: “A government shutdown would jeopardize critical services that seniors rely on, from Social Security offices and Medicare assistance to veterans’ benefits and health programs.”
  • Real Clear Politics: “A lapse in funding will seriously jeopardize critical programs that grocers and their customers rely on – including SNAP and WIC – which will have limited funding and threaten food access for millions of low-income Americans should a shutdown occur.”

Law Enforcement and Public Safety Undermined

  • National Association of Police Organizations: “[I]f lawmakers neglect their constitutional duties, allow funding to run out and shut down the government, federal law enforcement officers, who are working to protect our cities and communities from violent crime, drugs, and guns, will be putting their lives on the line without getting paid.”
  • National Fraternal Order of Police: “The Senate’s rejection will cause major disruptions for programs that fund public safety efforts in our communities. Government officials throughout the U.S. Departments of Justice and Homeland Security won’t be able to man their posts and provide support for operations in the field.”
  • Council of Local Prisons: “Every day a shutdown continues, correctional staff are asked to risk their lives without pay, institutions operate under mounting strain, and the American people are put at greater risk. The cost of inaction far outweighs any perceived political gain.”
  • National Border Patrol Council: “A government shutdown means we go without mission-critical funding for patrol vehicles, roads, radios, infrastructure and agent pay.”

Veterans Benefits Hurt

  • American Legion: “This legislation ensures continuity for programs that are vital to veterans’ health care, housing, and benefits. By extending authorities for critical initiatives… Congress will protect lifelines that combat veteran suicide, expand access to mental health in rural communities, and prevent veteran homelessness.”

Travel Chaos for Americans

  • U.S. Travel Association: A shutdown is a wholly preventable blow to America’s travel economy – costing $1 billion every week – and affecting millions of travelers and businesses.
  • U.S. Travel: A shutdown worsens TSA and air traffic controller shortages, leading to longer airport security lines, flight delays, and cancellations.
  • U.S. Travel: National Parks, museums, and attractions will close or fall into disrepair, hurting tourism for local economies.
  • Ipsos Survey: 60% of Americans say they would cancel or avoid air travel if a shutdown happens.

CLICK HERE TO SEE HOW MUCH TRAVEL SPENDING HAS BEEN LOST SINCE THE DEMOCRAT SHUTDOWN BEGAN

Homeowners Exposed During Hurricane Season

  • Fox News: Millions of Americans could lose flood insurance coverage if Democrats refuse to back a House-passed spending bill that extends the National Flood Insurance Program.
  • National Association of Home Builders: “Past disruptions of the NFIP have caused immediate and widespread negative impacts on property sales, home values, and consumer confidence.”

Farmers and Ranchers Lack Certainty

  • National Cattlemen’s Beef Association: “We commend the House for passing the continuing resolution. America’s hardworking farmers and ranchers need predictability and stability from government, and House leadership is leading the charge to do just that. We encourage the Senate to follow suit and ensure that this continuing resolution reaches the President’s desk as soon as possible.”
  • National Chicken Council: “Following House passage, NCC today is urging the Senate to follow-suit and pass a Continuing Resolution (CR) that would prevent the government from shutting down. Businesses need certainty and the President signing a CR would help provide it.”
  • Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council: Small business owners, their employees, and local communities are still transitioning through the effects of past policies that imposed multi-year inflationary pressures.”

The Bottom Line

A shutdown doesn’t just waste billions in taxpayer dollars — it means seniors waiting longer for Social Security, veterans losing access to lifesaving care, families seeing food assistance cut off, law enforcement officers working without pay, and farmers and homeowners left in financial limbo. Republicans are united behind a clean, nonpartisan plan to keep the government open. Democrats are choosing a shutdown for their base, not for the American people.

LEADER JEFFRIES: “THE REPUBLICAN HEALTHCARE CRISIS IS IMMORAL IN NATURE AND DEMOCRATS ARE FIGHTING HARD TO REVERSE IT”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District of New York)

Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries held a press conference with Whip Clark and Chairman Aguilar where he emphasized that Donald Trump and Republicans have shut down the government instead of working with Democrats who are in Washington, DC and ready to work to find a bipartisan agreement and lower healthcare costs.

LEADER JEFFRIES: At midnight, Donald Trump and Republicans shut the federal government down because they don’t want to provide healthcare to working-class Americans. Leader Schumer and myself met with President Trump and legislative leaders on Monday. We had a conversation that was designed to avoid a painful government shutdown and address the Republican healthcare crisis. Subsequent to that meeting, we heard nothing from any of the legislative leaders on the Republican side, and the President has been engaging in irresponsible and unserious behavior, demonstrating that, all along, Republicans wanted to shut the government down. That’s no surprise, because for decades, Republicans have consistently shut the government down as part of their efforts to try to extract and jam their extreme right-wing agenda down the throats of the American people.

Democrats have repeatedly made clear we are ready to sit down with anyone, at any time and at any place in order now to reopen the government, to enact a spending agreement that meets the needs of the American people and to address the devastating Republican healthcare crisis that has caused extraordinary harm on people all across the country, in rural America, working-class America, urban America, small town America, the heartland of America and Black and brown communities throughout America. The Republican healthcare crisis is devastating, the likes of which no one has ever seen. Largest cut to Medicaid in American history. A possible $536 billion cut to Medicare because of the One Big Ugly Bill if Congress doesn’t act by the end of the year. Tens of millions of Americans are about to experience dramatically increased premiums, co-pays and deductibles because of the Republican unwillingness to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits. Hospitals, nursing homes and community-based health clinics are closing all across the country, including in rural America, because of what Republicans have done and the healthcare crisis they have triggered through their cruel actions throughout this year. Republicans have even canceled medical research in the United States of America, even as it relates to children who are battling cancer. The Republican healthcare crisis is immoral in nature, and Democrats are fighting hard to reverse it. Cancel the cuts, lower the cost, save healthcare on behalf of the American people.

Full press conference can be watched here.
