WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12) released a statement on the horrific school shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, MN.

“My prayers are with the people of Minnesota, the victims, and their families after today’s horrific shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis,” said Congresswoman Adams. “Schools are supposed to be sanctuaries of education but in their first week back, two young students have already tragically lost their lives from another mass shooting.”

“America is the only developed country in the world where this continues to happen. We owe it to our children, teachers, and parents to act and we must act now. Their lives depend on it.”

Carbajal Reintroduces Bipartisan Legislation to Unlock Federal Funding for Safe Parking Programs

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Salud Carbajal (CA-24)

U.S. Representative Salud Carbajal (D-CA-24), along with Representatives Doug LaMalfa (R-CA-01), David Valadao (R-CA-22), and Juan Vargas (D-CA-52), reintroduced bipartisan legislation to unlock federal dollars for safe parking programs. Safe parking programs provide safe overnight parking locations for people experiencing homelessness and living in their vehicles as well as supportive services, like rapid rehousing services and facilities like restrooms and showers.

“For the past 20 years, I’ve been proud to support Santa Barbara’s safe parking program. It’s a proven initiative that has helped hundreds of Central Coast residents transition from homelessness into secure accommodations,” said Rep. Carbajal. “Santa Barbara has shown that investing in safe parking works. That’s why I’m reintroducing bipartisan legislation to expand this vital service nationwide.”

“Homelessness is not just an issue affecting big cities – it’s having an impact right in our own backyard in rural communities throughout the Central Valley,” said Rep. Valadao. “There’s not one easy solution to this complex issue, but Safe Parking Programs help to keep people off the streets as they work to find more permanent housing. This bipartisan bill is an important step to combat homelessness and ensure people have the resources they need to successfully reintegrate into our communities.”

“Everyone deserves a safe, secure, and affordable place to call home,” said Rep. Vargas. “I am proud to co-lead this legislation to support safe parking programs and help those experiencing homelessness transition to stable housing.”

The Naomi Schwartz and Susan Rose Safe Parking Act of 2025, named in honor of the two Santa Barbara County Supervisors who first developed the 2004 program, would allow federal housing funds to support safe parking programs by making these programs eligible for grants to support the operation and expansion of these critical lifelines.

The bill is inspired by the nation’s first safe parking program in Santa Barbara, California. Carbajal helped establish the 2004 program through his role as a staff member for the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors. The Santa Barbara program, overseen by the local nonprofit New Beginnings, has served as a model for similar programs across the United States.

Rep. Mike Levin, Solana Beach Mayor Heebner Highlight Risks of Looming Government Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Levin (CA-49)

Solana Beach, CA —

Yesterday, Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49) joined Solana Beach Mayor Lesa Heebner and other local officials to outline to potential impacts of a federal government shutdown on Solana Beach and communities across California’s 49th District.

Federal funding is set to expire on September 30th, and without congressional action, a shutdown could delay or eliminate about $16.6 million dollars in support for local projects.

More than a dozen projects in North County San Diego and South Orange County are at risk. They include the following:

  • Buena Vista Lagoon Enhancement Project, Oceanside

  • Carlsbad Village Railroad Double Track Trenching, Carlsbad

  • Coast Highway Sidewalk Gap Closure, Dana Point

  • Emerald Drive Complete Streets Project, Vista

  • Fleet Modernization, Orange County

  • Glencreast Safe Routes to School, Solana Beach

  • Interstate 5 Improvement Project, Orange County

  • La Novia Avenue Bridge Replacement Project, San Juan Capistrano

  • Mariposa Walkway and Coastal Rail Trail Improvement Act, San Clemente

  • North Coast Highway 101 Drainage Improvements Project, Encinitas

  • Pier View Bridge, Oceanside

  • Positive Train Control Rail Safety Enhancement Project, Oceanside

  • San Dieguito Lagoon Shoreline Protection Project, Del Mar

  • Vista Permanent Navigation Center, Vista
  • Rep. Levin stressed that the effects of a shutdown would extend beyond infrastructure and community projects. He explained that unless Congress extends the Affordable Care Act’s premium tax credits, countless families could face significant increases in monthly health insurance premiums beginning next year.

“A government shutdown isn’t just a Washington headline, it would mean real impacts for our communities,” said Rep. Levin. “From Solana Beach to San Juan Capistrano, projects that protect our coast, improve our transportation and help law enforcement, are at risk. Additionally, families could face skyrocketing health care premiums if tax credits aren’t extended. My focus when Congress resumes session is to make sure we pass a responsible funding bill that keeps our communities’ priorities and projects on track.

Solana Beach Mayor Lesa Heebner echoed Rep. Levin’s concerns, underscoring the importance of federal partnerships. “Federal funding assistance is critical to local jurisdictions as it frees up more local funding to accomplish other community driven priorities. It allows cities to serve their communities in ways they could otherwise not afford to do,” said Solana Beach Mayor Lesa Heebner.

Congress is scheduled to reconvene next week after more than a month-long recess. Lawmakers must reach an agreement before the September 30th deadline to avoid a government shutdown.

Estes Introduces Legislation to Reduce Federal Limitations on Sedgwick County Park

Estes Introduces Legislation to Reduce Federal Limitations on Sedgwick County Park

U.S. Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas) introduced legislation to lift a federal restriction on the Northeast Sedgwick County Park, which encompasses 650 acres of free trails and fields. This legislation will remove the federal restrictions over the land and allow the local community to make decisions regarding the park land. Additionally, this legislation will empower the Sedgwick County Commissioners to better use their resources to provide adequate recreation and future development in the area.

“Local Kansas communities should be able to make decisions about how to use their land without federal strings attached,” said Rep. Estes. “My legislation will lift the encumbrance on the Northeast Sedgwick County Park and restore local control of the land to the Sedgwick County Commission instead of allowing the federal bureaucracy more than a thousand miles away to limit its use.”

Congressman Scott Perry Introduces the Freedom from Union Violence Act

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Scott Perry (PA-10)

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Scott Perry (PA-10) just introduced the Freedom from Union Violence Act, to rectify a deadly loophole in the 1946 Hobbs Anti-Extortion Act that enables union officials to perpetrate violence, extortion, and other crime in pursuit of union objectives.

“I was shocked to learn that unions can literally terrorize non-union workers into either joining a union or quitting their jobs altogether, which has included many forms of violence up to and including even murder,” said Congressman Perry. “For decades, bad-actor unions have gotten away with this because of a much-abused loophole the Supreme Court carved out through the Hobbs Anti-Extortion Act. My bill, the ‘Freedom from Union Violence Act,’ closes that loophole once and for all. Americans – all Americans – are subject to the same laws and penalties, union member or not.”

The Supreme Court Enmons decision (1973) held that strike-related violence cannot be prosecuted under the 1946 Hobbs Anti-Extortion Act, which created a loophole empowering chaos and criminality, so long as the perpetrators believe they’re pursuing “legitimate union objectives.” As a result, decades of union violence (much directed at coworkers merely disagreeing with a strike) came with zero consequences. This not only emboldens more violence, but creates an untenable, dangerous, and inequitable system by which a special/select group of Citizens (unions) may act without impunity whereby Citizens in similar situations would otherwise be held accountable.

According to the National Institute for Labor Relations Research, since Enmons, approximately 12,000 incidents of union violence resulted in 203 deaths and over 6,600 injuries to American workers. Other law enforcement records indicate that as much as 80-90% of union violence reported to police goes unreported in the media.

Congressman Perry’s bill not only rights a wrong by closing the Enmons loophole, but most importantly, keeps our workers safe by raising awareness of this issue.

Case Seeks Applicants For Nominations For Appointments To Our Nation’s Service Academies For The 2026 Incoming Class

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Ed Case (Hawai‘i – District 1)

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Representative Ed Case (HI-01) is seeking qualified applicants for his Congressional nomination to our nation’s four service academies: the U.S. Military Academy (West Point/Army); U.S. Naval Academy(Annapolis/Navy); U.S. Air Force Academy (Colorado Springs/Air Force) and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point/Nassau County – New York).

“One of my favorite and most serious duties as a member of the U.S. Congress is nominating Hawaii’s best and brightest young men and women to our nation’s service academies,” said Case.

“I have had the privilege for over ten years now of nominating many candidates to our service academies, many of whom are in service or now attending. I’m again honored to do my part to ensure that Hawaiʻi continues our long tradition of contributing to the next generation of America’s outstanding military leaders.”

A Congressional nomination is the exclusive avenue for appointment to our nation’s service academies for most applicants. A nomination does not guarantee an appointment, but it is a requirement for final consideration for the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Successful applicants must have high moral character, a strong academic record and a motivation to dutifully serve our nation.

In a letter to all high schools in his district (see below), Case said: “An applicant must also be a U.S. citizen, a high school graduate between the ages of 17 and 23, unmarried and without dependents. Fully completed applications must be received by my office no later than October 10, 2025. Please also visit my military academy nomination webpage at https://case.house.gov/services/service-academy-nominations.htm.”

Case continued: “Additionally, please note that I may only consider applicants who are legal residents of the First Congressional District which I represent (Honolulu from Makapu‘u through Downtown and Pearl City up to Mililani and then through Waipahu and ‘Ewa Beach to Kapolei). My office can assist in verifying this requirement, but you can check yourself by entering your home address here: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative.

“I encourage and invite students and school officials assisting candidates with their applications to mail in application packets to my Honolulu Office and or submit applications electronically in a Portable Document Format (.pdf) to my Honolulu office staff via Nestor Garcia at Nestor.Garcia@mail.house.gov, or contact him at phone (808) 650-6688.”

Congressman Krishnamoorthi Introduces the Bringing Back Benefits Act to Reverse Trump Medicaid and SNAP Cuts

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (8th District of Illinois)

WASHINGTON — Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) introduced the Bringing Back Benefits Act, legislation that would nullify the cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) made in the Republican-passed Reconciliation Bill. The package, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), served as one of the largest attacks on health care in modern history, slashing almost $1 trillion in funding for Medicaid, a program millions of Americans, including tens of thousands of Illinoisans, depend on for access to health care. The OBBBA also cut the SNAP program by $186 billion, a move that will result in more hungry families across America. In Illinois alone, the law puts 205,000 people at immediate risk of losing some of their SNAP benefits and threatens to strip 535,000 residents of their Medicaid coverage.

“The decision by President Trump and Congressional Republicans to slash Medicaid and SNAP to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest among us was a moral failure and a massive mistake,” Congressman Krishnamoorthi said. “Families across Illinois and the nation are already feeling the devastating impacts of this so-called ‘Large Lousy Law,’ and we must act now to repeal these disastrous provisions before millions more are affected. This is Congress’s chance to correct a serious misstep and help working families — we must take it by passing my legislation.”

In July, Congressman Krishnamoorthi visited Franklin Hospital in Benton, one of the nine hospitals in Illinois that faces closure due to the cuts enacted in the OBBBA. Illinois is projected to lose $6.73 billion in Medicaid funding alone under this legislation.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi Responds to President Trump’s Attempt to Illegally Militarize Chicago

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (8th District of Illinois)

WASHINGTON – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) today issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s plan to deploy troops to Chicago:

“President Trump’s illegal attempt to militarize Chicago will do nothing but spark chaos and create spectacle. There is no emergency in Illinois that warrants federalizing our National Guard or deploying active-duty troops into our communities—just as there was no justification in Washington or Los Angeles. Donald Trump’s flagrant abuses of power must end. Our brave servicemen and women are not pawns in his political games.

That’s why I introduced legislation to block any president from unilaterally deploying the military into states without a governor’s request. If the President is serious about making Chicago safer, we’re ready to work with his Administration—but not on half-baked stunts that trample the Constitution and spread chaos. I stand with Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson in rejecting this reckless overreach and defending the rule of law.”

Rep. Kelly to President Trump: ‘You are not welcomed in Chicago’

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Robin Kelly IL

CHICAGO – U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (Il-02) released the following statement after President Donald Trump claimed Black women want him to send the National Guard to Chicago:

“President Trump, let me be absolutely clear: you are not welcomed in Chicago. Do not send the National Guard into our city. And you have no authority to claim what Black women want. Black women have lost sons and daughters, spouses, fathers and mothers to gun violence – and experienced the horrific trauma of gun violence and domestic violence themselves – yet you have done nothing to save Black lives. In fact, bringing the National Guard into Chicago threatens Black communities that have already been overpoliced and under-invested in for generations.

“President Trump believes he can make an easy target out of Chicago – but he’s never understood our city. Crime has gone down to pre-pandemic levels due to community violence intervention organizations that have provided opportunities and safer pathways for young adults. If the President truly cared about law and order, he would keep the National Guard away – out of DC, too – pass gun safety laws, and release already-allocated funds to CVI organizations. We all know, though, that he’s too scared of the gun lobby to do anything.”

According to the Chicago Mayor’s Office Violence Reduction Dashboard, crime has decreased this year compared to 2024, including a 45% reduction in multi-victim shooting incidents, 35% reduction in fatal shooting homicides, and 49% reduction in car hijackings.

Merkley, Wyden, Bonamici Express Concern Over the Closure of Providence Seaside’s Birthing Center

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Suzanne Bonamici (1st District Oregon)

Washington, D.C. – Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden, and U.S. Representative Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), are expressing serious concern over the planned closure of labor and delivery services at Providence Seaside and call on Providence Health & Services to support families and clinicians affected by the decision.

Last week, Providence announced that, on October 4, the Seaside hospital would end obstetrics and inpatient newborn care. The lawmakers sent a letter to Providence President and CEO Erik Wexler expressing concerns for mothers, families, and employees affected by the closure.

“We anticipate that this decision will hurt the health and safety of expectant mothers, newborns, and families, who will no longer have local access to obstetrics care,” cautioned the lawmakers.

The Seaside hospital serves a wide geographic area, and the closure will force patients to travel dangerously long distances—in some cases, more than an hour—to receive both routine and emergency obstetric care. Compounded by Samaritan Health Service’s reported plan to close its Lincoln City and Lebanon labor and delivery departments, Providence’s decision would impede access to maternity care in Oregon’s rural communities, while also putting an undue burden on many families that could cause them to bypass necessary medical care.

“In addition, we expect these challenges will only get worse given the Republican reconciliation bill that gutted the health care system by $1 trillion, thereby making it harder for rural and isolated maternity units to survive,” they wrote. “As a result of these cuts, rural and small hospitals will be forced into impossible choices and unpopular operational decisions, like cutting labor and delivery services, in order to keep their doors open.”

While the lawmakers deeply understand the numerous economic challenges facing rural labor and delivery units across Oregon—including low volumes of births, workforce shortages, and challenging reimbursement rates—they’ve also seen the negative impacts labor and delivery unit closures have on Oregon’s mothers and families. Together, they are calling for Providence Health & Services to support the families, clinicians, and communities it serves.

“We urge you to assist expectant families to find alternative options for safe maternal health care so they do not suffer disruptions in their obstetrics care. In addition, we urge you to provide meaningful support to the physicians, nurses, and other clinicians whose jobs will be affected by the reduction in obstetrics care at Providence Seaside. Finally, we urge Providence Seaside to engage in a transparent process with the community it serves as it winds down local obstetrics care,” continued the lawmakers.
