Washington, D.C. — Today, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi joined 186 Members of Congress in filing an amicus brief to urge the United States Supreme Court to uphold the constitutionality of Colorado’s ban on mental health professionals engaging in conversion therapy for minors in the case of Chiles v. Salazar.

A total of 167 Members of the House of Representatives and 20 United States Senators joined the brief, including House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), House Democratic Whip Katherine M. Clark (MA-05), House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (CA-33), and every Co-Chair and Vice Chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus.

The Petitioner in this case is a licensed professional counselor who filed a pre-enforcement challenge against the state’s ban on conversion therapy, arguing the ban violates her freedom of speech. The members’ brief argues that the law is constitutional.

It specifically highlights how legislatures have historically regulated professional conduct carried out by means of language to enforce compliance with professional standards and how Courts have historically upheld federal and state statutes regulating professional conduct that incidentally involves speech.

Wrightsville, PA—Representative Lloyd Smucker (PA-11), a senior member of the tax-writing Committee on Ways and Means, joined small businesses in Wrightsville for a roundtable discussion on federal tax policy and how the newly enacted One Big Beautiful Bill will drive investment and growth in the local economy. 

Smucker is the chief sponsor of the Main Street Tax Certainty Act, which was signed into law as part of the recently-passed One Big Beautiful Bill. Smucker’s legislation made permanent the small business tax deduction, known as Section 199A of the tax code. 

This provision allows for a 20 percent deduction of qualified income for pass-through businesses. Since most small businesses are structured as a pass-through, this section promotes equity in America’s tax code between small businesses on Main Street with larger corporations. 

“When small businesses thrive, our communities thrive. Thanks to the Republican-led Congress and with President Trump in the White House, small businesses have the predictability they need to invest in their workforce, operations, and community. This pro-growth policy will ensure small businesses keep tax parity with larger corporations. PACIFIC PALISADES, CA – On August 26th, Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32) joined federal, state, and local leaders to commemorate the final debris removal operation in the Pacific Palisades Fire recovery area — a major milestone in the aftermath of one of the most destructive fires in recent California history.

Standing alongside representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA, Cal OES, the County of Los Angeles, and the City of Los Angeles, Congressman Sherman honored the completion of a months-long effort to remove hazardous debris left behind by the Pacific Palisades fire, which began on January 7th.

“For residents like Noland West, whose home once stood here, what we now call ‘debris’ was once sanctuary, neighborhood, and the cherished mementos of lives well-lived,” said Congressman Sherman. “This is more than a cleanup milestone — it’s a moment of progress and perseverance for a community that’s been through hell and is fighting its way back.”

The final debris removal site in Pacific Palisades is the last of the opt-in properties cleared under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ debris removal program. Under FEMA’s direction and in coordination with local partners, the Corps removed over 1 million tons of hazardous material from 4,010 properties — completing the mission several months ahead of schedule.

“I want to thank the Army Corps of Engineers for taking on this task head-on and getting it done with lightning-quick speed,” said Sherman. “What I hear mostly from residents is ‘we want to rebuild quickly’, and that is why we are here to celebrate government doing something well ahead of schedule, enabling residents to move forward with the hard but important work of rebuilding their homes and lives.”

The federal government has allocated more than $2.1 billion to the debris removal mission. Congressman Sherman has pushed for full funding and strong oversight throughout the process, advocating for comprehensive soil testing and liability protections for residents.

Congressman Sherman also vowed to fight for a supplemental appropriation in Washington to help make it easier for affected families to rebuild.

The event featured remarks from U.S. Army Corps leadership, FEMA, Cal OES, Councilwoman Traci Park (Los Angeles – District 11), and Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath (Los Angeles County – District 3). All praised the extraordinary coordination among agencies and the resilience of the affected communities.

Sherman closed with a message of determination: “The Army Corps and the EPA have concluded their mission. Now we must stand resolute in ours — providing the resources and support to help this community come back stronger. Palisades Strong.”

WASHINGTON, DC— Today, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12), co-founder and co-chair of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, and Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), co-chair of the Caucus on Black Women and Girls, introduced the Black Breastfeeding Week resolution, recognizing August 25, 2025, through August 31, 2025, as “Black Breastfeeding Week.”

Black Breastfeeding Week highlights the disparity in breastfeeding rates between Black mothers and white mothers. According to the CDC’s 2022 Breastfeeding Report Card, only 74% of Black mothers initiated breastfeeding compared to 85% of white mothers. Breastfeeding has been found to have improved health outcomes for infants, including lowering risk of short- and long-term illnesses and diseases, strengthening immune systems, and providing vital nutrients during early childhood development.

“Breastfeeding is a Black maternal health issue, one we must address to prevent more of our mothers and children from needlessly losing their lives from this crisis,” said Congresswoman Adams. “We know breastfeeding improves infant health outcomes but far too often, Black women are not given the support they need to breastfeed their children: maternal leave, accessible healthcare, food security, and racial equity in medicine.  I am proud to introduce the Black Breastfeeding Week resolution to bring attention to the breastfeeding disparity Black women in America face and the policies we can enact to best take care of our country’s children.”

“We must recognize breastfeeding as both a hunger issue and a health equity issue,” said Rep. Watson Coleman. “Black women are pushed to formula-feed after delivery at much higher rates than other women. Consequently, Black women have among the lowest breastfeeding rates in the United States. Black Breastfeeding Week helps us recognize this issue and those working to ensure all women have the information they need to make the best decisions for themselves and their babies.”

Black women in the United States face significant barriers to breastfeeding. Lack of paid maternal leave and inadequate workplace breastfeeding spaces, which disproportionately impact Black women, make regular breastfeeding for working mothers difficult. Meanwhile, medical bias also contributes to the disparity, with hospitals being twice as likely to provide formula to Black infants than white infants.

The eras of slavery, segregation, and internment cannot be whitewashed because they make some people uncomfortable. Museums were never built for comfort. They’re built for learning, understanding, and chronicling the truth of our past.”

“The president can try to remove our history from museums but make no mistake, that will not silence the American people,” Adams continued. “We will keep acknowledging it, discussing it, and learning from it as we build for the future.”

“My prayers are with the people of Minnesota, the victims, and their families after today’s horrific shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis,” said Congresswoman Adams. “Schools are supposed to be sanctuaries of education but in their first week back, two young students have already tragically lost their lives from another mass shooting.”

“America is the only developed country in the world where this continues to happen. We owe it to our children, teachers, and parents to act and we must act now. Their lives depend on it.”
