Crow: Kristi Noem Should Resign

AURORA — Congressman Jason Crow (D-CO-06), a combat veteran and member of the House Armed Services Committee, is calling for the resignation of U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following another fatal shooting and killing of an American citizen in Minnesota.

Crow spoke directly about Alex Pretti’s murder over the weekend, linked here.

In a statement with fellow veteran Members of Congress, Crow said:

“As veterans, we are outraged and horrified by the killing of a second civilian in Minneapolis by federal agents in less than three weeks. Border Patrol agents shot and killed 37-year-old American citizen Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse at a VA hospital. Video footage and eyewitness accounts of this incident are deeply disturbing and raise serious questions about the use of force.

“This tragic killing comes on the heels of the fatal shooting of Renée Good earlier this month, and multiple other documented incidents of civil-rights abuses and excessive enforcement by ICE and CBP in Minnesota – demonstrating a pattern of misconduct that has fractured trust and terrified communities.

“In the military, when preventable deaths occur, leaders stand down operations to review/change policies, reassess missions, retrain personnel, and implement stronger safety protocols. The Department of Homeland Security must do no less. Our communities are less safe, and tensions have reached a boiling point.

“For these reasons, we call for an immediate stand-down of ICE and CBP interior enforcement operations and demand the resignation of the Secretary of Homeland Security. Current leadership has failed to protect civil liberties, ensure accountability, or maintain the public trust.

“We also demand full, transparent, independent investigations into these deaths and abuses, and decisive steps to prevent further civilian killings at the hands of federal agents.”

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez Calls for the Immediate Resignation of U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Reiterates Calls for Independent Investigation into the Actions of ICE

Washington D.C.— Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) released the following statement calling for the immediate resignation of U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

“The tragic events of this weekend and the Secretary’s continued refusal to take responsibility for the rogue and indiscriminate actions of an agency under her supervision require accountability. For this reason, I am calling for Secretary Noem to resign and reiterate my earlier calls for an independent and thorough investigation as well as an immediate end to ICE’s heavy handed enforcement tactics.”

“Los trágicos eventos de este fin de semana y la continua denegación de la secretaria a asumir responsabilidad por las acciones descontroladas e indiscriminadas de una agencia bajo su supervisión requieren rendición de cuentas. Por esta razón, pido la renuncia de la secretaria Noem y reitero mis llamados para una investigación independiente y exhaustiva, así como el fin inmediato de las tácticas agresivas de ICE.”

Grothman Reintroduces the Safeguarding Benefits for Americans Act

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Glenn Grothman (R-Glenbeulah 6th District Wisconsin)

Congressman Glenn Grothman (R-WI) has reintroduced the Safeguarding Benefits for Americans Act. This legislation would strengthen social safety net programs and ensure their availability for U.S. citizens by preventing non-citizens from receiving federal welfare benefits, including Social Security and Medicare, by establishing strict verification measures, requiring benefit-administering entities to verify individuals through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Social Security Administration (SSA).

It is estimated that this legislation would save taxpayers $125 billion in the first year alone, doubling the estimated $60 billion in savings when the legislation was previously introduced. The sharp increase in projected savings reflects the long-term damage caused by the Biden administration’s open-border policies, which significantly expanded improper access to taxpayer-funded benefits.

This bill is cosponsored by Representatives Lauren Bobert (R-CO), Nancy Mace (R-SC), and Scott Perry (R-PA).

“Under the previous administration, President Biden pursued a reckless open-border agenda that resulted in 8.7 million illegal border crossings nationwide,” said Congressman Grothman. “The scale of illegal immigration exceeded the population of 36 states and overwhelmed Border Patrol, American cities, and local communities, while putting American citizens at risk.

“When I first introduced this legislation, it was estimated to save taxpayers about $60 billion. Today, after years of failed Biden-era border policies, that number has doubled to $125 billion, which shows how badly the system was mismanaged and how much this commonsense policy fix is needed.

“Now, under President Trump’s leadership, Congress has an opportunity to reverse that damage by protecting benefits for U.S. citizens, restoring integrity to our immigration system, and ensuring the safety net remains a hand up, not a handout.”

“The ‘Safeguarding Benefits for Americans Act’ would save over $125 billion in the first year by ending noncitizen access to welfare, according to our research. Representative Grothman’s bill provides a better long-term strategy to support immigrant self-sufficiency and protect taxpayers than any other alternative. It’s high time that the government build a big beautiful wall around the welfare state.” – Alex Nowrasteh Senior Vice President for Policy, Cato Institute

Chairman Guthrie Demands Answers from Health Insurance Execs Over Increased Costs of Health Care

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Brett Guthrie (2nd District Kentucky)

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, delivered the following opening statement at today’s Health Subcommittee hearing with top health executives examining health insurance affordability.

Chairman Guthrie’s opening statement as prepared for delivery:

Thank you, Chairman Griffith. And thank you to our panel of CEO witnesses for being here today.

Today’s hearing will the first in a series of hearings focused on health care affordability, and we begin by hearing testimony from our nation’s top health insurance CEOs.

According to CMS, America spent $5.3 trillion dollars on health care in 2024. That represents a staggering 18 percent of our country’s gross domestic product.
Over 200 million people in the U.S. get their health insurance through the private marketplace. Of that total, around 178 million people receive coverage through their employer, and 24 million get their coverage through Obamacare.

Across these markets, health care costs have been increasing at an unprecedented rate. In the Obamacare markets, health care premium increases for 2026 were as high as 40 and 50 percent in some cases. In the employer marketplace, year-over-year cost increases for 2026 are at a 15-year high.

Despite what my Democratic friends would have the American people believe, health care affordability is far from a one-market issue. It also isn’t a new issue–this committee has previously worked in a bipartisan way to pass major reforms across the health care sector to make health care more affordable for all Americans. I hope we can rise above the politics and have a real discussion about the root causes of affordability and how we can help ALL Americans have access to more affordable care.

And that is why we have convened this panel of CEOs today, who can speak authoritatively on the market forces affecting affordability.

The goal of this hearing is to have a conversation about these rising health care costs, and your companies sit at the center of our health care financing system. Nearly every dollar spent on health care in America runs through your companies or one of your competitors. And we as a country are spending a lot on health care.

A core component of your industry’s value proposition is working on behalf of Americans to lower the cost of health care, along with improving access and quality. Yet, health care costs are increasing every year, and more and more Americans have become frustrated by the feeling that their insurance is working against their health, not for it.

I want to be clear in what we expect to hear answers on today:

– As some of the largest companies in our economy and amongst the companies that benefit the most from government subsidies, how do you justify the continued skyrocketing of health care costs for your beneficiaries?

– What are you doing that is working to lower health care costs, what isn’t working, and what are the barriers?

– What should insurance companies be doing better to live up to your promises to the American people?

I thank the witnesses for their participation and look forward to discussing these issues with you all today. I yield back.

CONGRESSWOMAN PLASKETT’S STATEMENT ON GOVERNOR BRYAN’S FINAL STATE OF THE TERRITORY ADDRESS

PRESS RELEASE

CONGRESSWOMAN PLASKETT’S STATEMENT ON GOVERNOR BRYAN’S FINAL STATE OF THE TERRITORY ADDRESS

ST. THOMAS, USVI – Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett (D-USVI) released the following statement in response to Governor Albert Bryan Jr.’s final State of the Territory Address:

As I shared in my 2026 New Year’s message, we live in a time that calls for resolve, clarity, and shared purpose, and for recognizing that progress requires hard work and persistence. Tonight’s address underscored that reality by detailing the scale of recovery now underway—from federally funded rebuilding across our islands, to long-delayed infrastructure projects finally moving into construction, to reforms that have stabilized core systems like healthcare, energy, and pensions. I commend the Governor for his detailed review of accomplishments and would like the community to understand that the federal legislative victories that have paved much of this progress happened through relentless advocacy, strategic partnership, and an unwavering commitment to securing what our territory deserves from the federal government.

For Virgin Islanders, progress is not measured in speeches alone. It is measured by whether disaster recovery dollars are reaching our communities, whether our hospitals and clinics are being rebuilt and strengthened as outlined tonight, whether energy reliability is improving and costs are coming down, whether our schools and roads are moving from plans to construction, and whether our families can see a path toward stability. Many of the initiatives discussed in the address required congressional action led by my office, including securing historic disaster recovery funding, permanently improving the Medicaid match, restoring the rum cover-over rate, and reducing federal cost-share requirements that made large-scale rebuilding possible.

The permanent restoration of the rum cover-over rate to $13.25 per proof gallon—a victory the Governor rightly celebrated—was the result of years of coordinated effort with our congressional allies. Similarly, the permanent decrease of the required local Medicaid match from 45% to 17% by the federal government, which I had written into legislation, represents a transformational policy win that enables our healthcare system to serve over 29,000 Virgin Islanders annually without bankrupting our local government tax.

When the Trump Administration threatened to impose devastating maritime fees that would have inflated costs on everything from building supplies to groceries, as a Member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees trade policy, I presented the rationale for a Caribbean waiver, negotiated with the administration to make changes—and we won.

The $25 billion in federal recovery funds now rebuilding our schools, hospitals, roads, and infrastructure is the direct result of federal legislation I championed and defended. The reduced federal match requirement from 10% to 2%—saving Virgin Islands taxpayers $2 billion—did not materialize on its own. It required strategic legislative maneuvering and persistent pressure, calling in favors to the Biden Administration.

Through the American Rescue Plan Act, I was able to legislate that the Virgin Islands receive a permanent reimbursement of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit that has brought in annual funding of between $20 and $40 million to our local government. I was delighted when Governor Bryan and our legislature earmarked these funds for tax returns and the 8% retroactive payments to our government employees.

I also want to address the challenges we continue to face. Energy reliability remains a pressing concern for our families and businesses. The conviction of three cabinet members reminds us that the people’s trust is sacred and must be constantly earned through transparent, ethical governance. And as we look ahead to the significant infrastructure investments on the horizon, we must ensure that the next administration has the capacity, integrity, and vision to sustain this momentum. The road ahead demands more than ribbon-cuttings and groundbreakings. It requires the discipline to maintain what we build, the wisdom to plan for sustainable growth, and the courage to make difficult decisions about how we invest in our collective future.

Our work is far from finished. The next four years will test our resolve as federal recovery dollars flow into active construction projects across all three islands. We must rebuild not just structures, but systems. We must create not just jobs, but careers. We must invest not just in today’s needs, but in tomorrow’s capacity. My team and I remain firmly committed to working  Governor Bryan through the final year of this administration and the 36th Legislature to ensure that every federal dollar serves our people effectively and that every policy decision strengthens our foundation.

As Virgin Islanders look ahead, we must shift from recovery to readiness in ways people can feel in our homes, at work, in our schools, and in our communities. We have come too far to settle for progress that cannot be sustained. The work ahead calls for continued action, clarity, and commitment. It is time to keep building on what has been earned—let’s get to work.

U.S. Rep. McCollum Statement on Domestic Provisions of Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 7148, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026. Upon passage of the measure, Ranking Member Betty McCollum issued the following statement:

“Due to the perseverance of my Democratic colleagues, this legislation protects funding for Democratic priorities, reasserts Congress’s power of the purse, and rejects Republicans’ poison pill riders.

“In the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS-Ed) appropriations bill Democrats secured big wins for our public health, our workforce, and our communities. This bill provides a $400 million increase to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a $1.7 billion increase to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and a $364 million increase to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), rebuking the deep cuts made to these agencies in the Republican House bill. It restores funding to several programs that were eliminated by President Trump and House Republicans, including: Firearm Injury and Mortality Prevention Research, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and valuable Title X Family Planning funding. This bill increases funding for Special Education, protects the Pell Grant, and saves the Institute of Museum and Library Science from closing down. It increases funding to Head Start, LIHEAP, and the Social Security Administration, ensuring that Americans have the best chance at success from preschool to post-retirement.

“The FY26 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development bill provides necessary funding to house our neighbors, build more affordable housing, and keep our skies safe The agreement safeguards the Continuum of Care program from Trump administration attacks. The agreement also rejects the President’s proposal to end the HOME Investment Partnerships Program, the sole federal program that helps communities build more affordable housing for rent and homeownership. Further, the bill would ensure that the Federal Aviation Administration can hire 2,500 new air traffic controller trainees to keep our skies safe.

“While these bills were not written perfectly, I am thankful that we were able to come together in a bipartisan manner to protect the American people from President Trump’s most divisive cuts and prevent a government shutdown.”

Beyer Calls For Noem’s Impeachment Following Murders Of Alex Pretti And Renee Good

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Don Beyer (D-VA)

Congressman Don Beyer (D-VA) today released a video statement with his response to the Trump Administration’s federal occupation of Minneapolis, which culminated in the recent murder of 37-year-old mother Renee Good by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents.

Beyer called for the removal of ICE, CBP, and other DHS personnel from Minneapolis, a full, independent investigation of the killings of Pretti and Good, and the impeachment of Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.

Beyer’s posts

The Department of Homeland Security is murdering American citizens. Congress cannot allow that to continue, we must act.

We need a full, independent investigation into these killings.

ICE, CBP and other DHS personnel must leave Minnesota and other cities where they have been sent to sow division and fear.

No more occupation. No more assaults on Americans peacefully exercising their rights. No more masked agents. No more warrantless entries. No more mass arrests to fill deportation quotas.

I voted against funding for DHS. Congress shouldn’t pass funding for this lawless agency without major guardrails.

And the House should impeach Kristi Noem.

Transcript of Beyer’s video:

The murder of Alex Pretti by [CBP] is an outrage.

This is the most horrifying act of our government I’ve ever seen on video.

Like the murder of Renee Good, eye witness videos prove that [the Department of] Homeland Security is lying about the shooting.

[In the videos] We see a [CBP] agent charge a woman who has been filming him. Then he shoves her to the ground and pepper sprays her face.

Alex Pretti does what you or I would do, he tries to protect her by placing himself between her and the agent, and then struggles to help her to her feet. They both slip on the ice, but Alex continues to shield the woman with his body.

That’s when we witness the murder. CBP agents pepper spray him, tackle him to the ground, and then shoot him in the back again and again.

Shots the Department of Homeland Security insanely calls “defensive shots.”

I’ve called for the resignation of Kristi Noem, and I will vote for her impeachment.

She’s obstructing local authorities from investigating two murders committed in Minneapolis by DHS agents.

DHS cannot be allowed to investigate itself. That’s how it’s done in dictatorships, not in America.

[These DHS agents are] Wearing masks – federal forces are entering people’s homes without warrants, they’re violating our constitutional rights, and sowing division and fear, all to meet a Kristi Noem [deportation] quota.

Last week, I voted against the bill funding [the Department of] Homeland Security. Now it’s up to the Senate.

What can you do? It’s time for everyone who believes in the Constitution, the rule of law, and basic human dignity to stand together peacefully against the immorality of this administration.

Congressman Neguse and Colleagues Seek Emergency Court Intervention to Restore Congressional Oversight at ICE Detention Facilities

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Joe Neguse (D-Co 2)

Emergency Motion Filed After ICE Denies Minnesota Delegation Access to Facility, Citing Reinstated Policy in Secret Memo Issued by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem

Washington, D.C. — Today, Colorado Congressman and Assistant Democratic Leader Joe Neguse led more than a dozen Members of Congress in filing an amended complaint and emergency motion seeking a temporary restraining order (TRO) from the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to restore their right and duty to conduct oversight of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities.

The latest filing in Neguse et al. v. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement et al. comes after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unlawfully tried to restrict members of Congress from conducting unannounced oversight visits at ICE detention facilities, directly interfering with Congress’s right and duty to investigate conditions, ensure compliance with the law, and respond to rising reports of abuse and violence inside detention centers.

After the court preliminarily blocked the policy in December 2025, and following the fatal shooting of a U.S. citizen by a federal agent in Minnesota, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem secretly reinstated the requirement through a previously undisclosed memorandum. The memo came to light only after multiple members of Congress were denied entry to an ICE facility in Minnesota despite presenting a valid court order.

This filing adds Representative Kelly Morrison (MN-03) as a plaintiff in the case, after she was denied access to conduct lawful oversight at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building in Minnesota.

Other plaintiffs include Assistant Democratic Leader Joe Neguse; Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Rep. Adriano Espaillat; Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member Rep. Bennie G. Thompson; Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Rep. Jamie Raskin; House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Ranking Member Rep. Robert Garcia; House Homeland Security Committee Subcommittee on Border Security and Enforcement Ranking Member Rep. J. Luis Correa; Rep. Jason Crow; Rep. Veronica Escobar; Rep. Dan Goldman; Rep. Jimmy Gomez; Rep. Raul Ruiz; and Rep. Norma Torres.

In a joint statement, the plaintiffs said, “The Trump administration is using billions of taxpayer dollars to carry out a violent and lawless immigration agenda with virtually no transparency or accountability. This is not only deeply dangerous — it is an affront to the rule of law and to our constitutional duty as Members of Congress. 2025 marked the deadliest year for those in ICE custody in more than two decades, with record detentions and mounting reports of abuse and inhumane conditions. We can’t turn a blind eye. We are returning to court to restore congressional oversight and hold this administration accountable to the American people.”

Read the amended complaint HERE and the emergency motion HERE.

The TRO asks the court to enforce the law by stopping DHS and ICE from obstructing oversight and restoring Congress’s ability to inspect detention facilities in real time. Without unannounced access, members cannot verify how taxpayer dollars are being spent, ensure people in government custody are treated humanely, or prevent agencies from concealing unlawful conditions before inspections occur.

The Members of Congress are represented in this suit by Democracy Forward Foundation and American Oversight.

“The Trump-Vance administration is trying to keep Americans from seeing what is really happening at these detention facilities to avoid accountability. We cannot avert our eyes, and our clients are entitled to use the levers of oversight that we have to get to the truth,” said Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward. “People – regardless of citizenship or immigration status – are being swept up in reckless raids, detained in overcrowded facilities, denied medical care and access to counsel, and, in some cases, dying in government custody. We are back in court because the administration continues to deny access to members of Congress from conducting essential oversight at a time when it is most needed.”

“The public has repeatedly witnessed the deadly consequences of ICE’s lawless conduct on American streets and learned of the abhorrent abuses inside its detention facilities,” said Chioma Chukwu, Executive Director of American Oversight. “Enough is enough. Deliberately blocking Congress from exercising its lawful oversight authority to evade accountability is indefensible. Real-time inspections are the only way to shed sunlight on the increasingly dangerous and inhumane conditions in ICE facilities. Congress’s right to conduct them must be restored immediately so lawmakers can do their jobs and prevent the administration from abusing, harming, and killing more people.”
