Pelosi Joins Coordinated Push to Reverse Trump Administration Housing Cuts

Washington D.C. – This week, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi joined House Democrats in supporting three major Congressional efforts opposing the Trump Administration’s harmful changes to the Continuum of Care (CoC) Programs. These changes could force more than 170,000 people back into homelessness and disrupt services in communities across the country. Pelosi’s support of all three initiatives underscores the significant stakes for San Francisco, where $55 million in federal CoC grants are central to keeping vulnerable individuals and families housed—supporting over 1,500 housing units in the Bay Area.

Pelosi signed on to three letters led by House Appropriations Committee Ranking Members Rosa DeLauro and James Clyburn, House Financial Services Committee Ranking Member Maxine Waters, and Bay Area Congressman Sam Liccardo. Across these efforts, lawmakers raised alarms about HUD’s abrupt policy shifts, deep funding reductions for permanent supportive housing and a severely delayed FY2025 Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) that together threaten to destabilize homelessness systems nationwide.

Appropriations Committee Letter
Speaker Emerita Pelosi, Ranking Member DeLauro, Rep. Clyburn and 203 House Democrats urged HUD to prevent service lapses caused by the latest NOFO. Their letter notes that the FY2025 NOFO is “the most delayed issuance of a NOFO for the CoC Program over the last 10 years,” and warns that the timing combined with major policy changes will result in “the most prolonged funding gap for this critical homelessness prevention program.”

The lawmakers highlighted that nearly $3.7 billion in FY2024 CoC grants begin expiring on December 31, 2025, raising urgent concerns that communities could face major disruptions through winter and into spring if the administration does not act.

The full letter can be read HERE.

Financial Services Committee Letter
Speaker Emerita Pelosi, Ranking Member Waters and 52 House Democrats called on HUD Secretary Scott Turner to rescind a NOFO that “could push over 170,000 formerly homeless individuals back on the streets and exacerbate our nation’s homelessness crisis.” The letter highlights that HUD’s proposal would slash permanent supportive housing from 86% of CoC funding to just 30% and impose an extremely compressed application timeline that could create a half-year gap in critical services.

The lawmakers warned that the NOFO would worsen conditions for people with disabilities, veterans, domestic violence survivors, women with children, and others already disproportionately impacted by the homelessness crisis.

The full letter can be read HERE.

Rep. Liccardo Letter
Speaker Emerita Pelosi, Rep. Sam Liccardo, and more than 30 House Democrats pressed HUD for answers on the Administration’s decision to cut billions from permanent supportive housing services in the CoC Program. The Liccardo-led effort notes that these cuts put 170,000 Americans at risk of homelessness, and emphasized that eliminating support without any transition plan would cause immediate disruption in cities that rely heavily on CoC investments to reduce homelessness.

Pelosi Urges Navy to Improve Transparency and Communication on Hunters Point Shipyard Cleanup

San Francisco – Today, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of the Navy John Phelan urging strengthened communication, transparency and accountability in the long-running cleanup effort at the Hunters Point Shipyard Superfund site.

The letter comes amid renewed public concern after elevated plutonium-239 levels at the site were revealed in press reports rather than proactive outreach from the Navy to the Hunters Point community. While the Navy later conveyed that the readings posed no harm to San Franciscans, Pelosi noted that this reassurance arrived only after the fact.

“The continued cadence of misfires in communication and delays with the completion of the cleanup further erode the public trust in the Navy’s ability to complete this long-awaited clean up and redevelopment,” Pelosi wrote.

Pelosi emphasized that the project’s success hinges on coordinated oversight and transparent engagement with community stakeholders. She continued: “I am counting on your commitment to the Navy’s continued efforts in the Hunters Point Shipyard and will fight to ensure robust resources continue to be secured so that this project can be complete once and for all. That effort is entirely reliant on the Navy’s ongoing, frequent dialogue with total transparency.”

During her time representing San Francisco in the Congress, Pelosi has secured over $1 billion in federal funding for the clean-up of the Hunters Point Shipyard. Last year, Pelosi hosted then-Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro to tour the site in preparation for the demolition of the remaining non-historic buildings.

Pelosi, Mullin Announce Nearly $40 Million for San Francisco Clean Bus Fleet Modernization

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi Representing the 12th District of California

Washington D.C. – Today, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (CA-11) and Congressman Kevin Mullin (CA-15) announced that San Francisco is set to receive nearly $40 million from the Federal Transit Administration’s Bus and Bus Facilities and Low-or-No-Emission Bus grant programs. This major investment, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed by the Democratic Congress and signed by President Joe Biden, will enable the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to replace aging coaches with new hybrid diesel-electric motor coaches – strengthening the City’s transit network and improving air quality for communities across San Francisco.

“Thanks to Democrats’ Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, San Francisco continues to modernize our transportation system while combating the climate crisis,” Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi said. “This funding will help replace aging coaches with cleaner, more reliable buses—delivering safer commutes, reducing pollution and increasing economic opportunities for working families across the Bay Area. Our progress stands as a reminder of what a productive Democratic Congress can deliver.”

“I am thrilled San Francisco earned federal funding to help modernize its essential public transit system, which clocked over 150 million passenger trips last year,” said Congressman Kevin Mullin. “Public transit is the backbone of our economy and people across America rely on it to get to work, school and home. Democrats led passage of the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law because we know that when we invest in cleaner, more efficient transportation, we protect public health, mitigate environmental impacts, and create a more enjoyable experience for riders.”

“Modern, reliable buses are essential to keeping San Francisco moving. This federal investment strengthens our ability to provide excellent service today while accelerating the agency’s efforts to avoid costly breakdowns and loss of service,” said SFMTA Director of Transportation Julie Kirschbaum. “We thank the Department of Transportation for supporting reliable public transit, especially at a time when our financial outlook is unpredictable.”

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will receive $39,800,000 for new hybrid diesel-electric motor coaches that will replace a portion of its aging fleet. These improvements will help reduce maintenance costs, increase system reliability and enhance service across San Francisco and northern San Mateo County while supporting California’s long-term climate goals.

Following a letter of support for the project from Speaker Emerita Pelosi to Federal Transit Administration Executive Director Matthew Welbes, this award was granted through a competitive national selection process under the Low-or-No-Emission Program and the Bus and Bus Facilities Program – both created and expanded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Pelosi Joins 212 Democrats in Calling on Speaker Johnson to Address Anti-Trans Rhetoric, Enforce Rules of Decorum

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi Representing the 12th District of California

Washington, D.C. — This week, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi joined 212 Democratic Members of Congress—led by Equality Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Sarah McBride (DE-AL) and Chair Rep. Mark Takano (CA-39)—in sending a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson condemning the rise in anti-transgender rhetoric from Members of Congress and urging the enforcement of the House’s rules of decorum. The letter signers represent the diversity of the Democratic Caucus, including rank-and-file Members, Leadership—including Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark, Chair Pete Aguilar—every Member of the Congressional Equality Caucus, and Members of every major House Democrat ideological caucus.

In their letter, the Members state:

“We write to you to strongly condemn the rise in anti-transgender rhetoric, including from members of Congress, and to urge you to ensure members of Congress are following rules of decorum and not using their platforms to demonize and scapegoat any marginalized community, including the transgender community.”

“This Congress, we have seen a dramatic escalation in rhetoric demonizing and dehumanizing the transgender community. This includes multiple instances of a member of Congress using a slur to refer to the transgender community during official proceedings, including during committee proceedings and on the floor of the House. Despite the responsibility of Committee Chairs and the Speaker of the House to maintain order and ensure members are following the rules of decorum, no action was taken by the Chair or Speaker Pro Tempore in any of these circumstances.”

Members end their letter by urging Speaker Johnson to condemn the rise in dehumanizing rhetoric and ensure members of the Republican conference abide by the rules of decorum:

“As Speaker of the House, you have a responsibility not just to the Republican Conference but to the entire House of Representatives—and the entire country that the House represents. We urge you to condemn the rise in dehumanizing rhetoric targeting the transgender community and to ensure members of your conference are abiding by rules of decorum and not using their platforms to demonize and scapegoat the transgender community, including by ensuring members are not using slurs to refer to the transgender community.”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Greg Steube (FL-17)

November 28, 2025 | Press ReleasesWASHINGTON — U.S. Representatives Greg Steube (R-Fla.) and Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.) introduced this week the Taxpayer Protection and Preparer Proficiency Act. This bill would establish new penalties for tax preparers for misuse of identification numbers and failure to comply with Internal Revenue Service requirements.
“Americans trust that tax preparers will be honest and thorough with their work,” said Rep. Steube. “When that trust is betrayed, it can have catastrophic consequences for the families and small businesses that depend on their services. That is why I am joining with Representative Panetta to introduce the Taxpayer Protection and Preparer Proficiency Act. It’s time to raise the standards for the trained professionals who organize and file the taxes of the American people.”
“Innocent taxpayers should not be penalized for the mistakes or malevolence of their tax preparer,” said Rep. Panetta. “My bipartisan legislation will help taxpayers avoid paying the price for untrustworthy or incompetent tax preparers by ensuring they’re held accountable. If you pay someone else to help you prepare your taxes, you should feel confident and secure that your tax preparer is professional, proficient, and principled.”
Background: The Taxpayer Protection and Preparer Proficiency Act expands the definition of “return” while establishing penalties and fines for tax preparers who fail to provide valid ID numbers, misuse electronic filing ID numbers, or improperly alter returns. It makes it a felony to willfully misuse or misappropriate ID numbers with criminal penalties reaching up to two years imprisonment and maximum fines of $50,000 for individuals and $100,000 for corporations. The Secretary of the Treasury is also permitted to deny, revoke, or suspend the Preparer Tax Identification Numbers (PTINs) of tax preparers that either engage in misconduct or fail to meet licensing and professional requirements.

U.S. Virgin Islands – Congresswoman Plaskett released the following statement expressing condolences on the passing of Elisa McKay:

“It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Elisa McKay, a beloved artist, educator, and pillar of our Virgin Islands community.

Elisa was a truly remarkable woman whose creative spirit and generous heart touched countless lives across St. Croix and throughout our territory. As a self-taught artist, she channeled what she described as a divine expression, creating work that reflected her deep love for our islands, our culture, and our people. Her art was an extension of her soul—vibrant, authentic, and deeply rooted in her Crucian heritage.

Beyond her artistic talent, Elisa dedicated herself to uplifting our community in so many ways. She served as an educator, taught yoga for four decades, worked tirelessly with our seniors through the Interfaith Coalition, and gave her time and wisdom to numerous organizations including Unity of St. Croix, the St. Croix Environmental Association, and the Women’s Coalition. Her compassion, spiritual leadership, and commitment to service made our Virgin Islands a better place.

My heartfelt condolences go out to her daughter Ayanna Joy McKay, whom Elisa considered her greatest accomplishment, and to all who knew and loved her. May her memory be a blessing, and may her artistic legacy continue to inspire us for generations to come.”
