WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren released the following statement on the passing of her staffer, Alexandra “Sasha” Podkolzina:

I am very sad to announce that Alexandra Podkolzina, a valued member of my staff in California, passed away this morning, lifted up by the love of her husband Kyle who was by her side.

Sasha did marvelous work for many years in my San Jose office. A brilliant young lawyer, she worked diligently on problems presented to us by my constituents. She was able to achieve remarkable, even life-changing,  results for many. I know that those whose life she touched while a member of my staff join us in mourning her loss.

Foster Statement on Voting Against NDAA

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Bill Foster (11th District of Illinois)

Washington, DC – Tonight, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement after voting against the House Republican version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for FY26.

“In Congress, the NDAA has historically been a bipartisan process focused on strengthening our national security and supporting service members and their families. I’m disappointed that Republican Leadership made the NDAA a venue for divisive partisan politics, attacking the rights of LGBTQ+ service members and refusing to rein in Trump’s misuse of the U.S. military for domestic law enforcement.

“As a physicist, I’m especially concerned that this legislation continues to waste money on Trump’s push for a “Golden Dome” missile defense system. For decades, scientists have been patiently explaining to politicians that an impermeable Strategic Missile Defense is technically impossible and can be easily circumvented by our opponents. Nonetheless, our government has wasted $250 billion on this technology to date, and President Trump’s continued focus on ballistic missile defense will fail to protect Americans, and ultimately risks making us less safe in the process.”

Scalise: Charlie Kirk Showed that the Power of Ideas Can Still Move a Nation

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steve Scalise (1st District of Louisiana)

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) spoke on the House floor in support of the resolution celebrating the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk. Leader Scalise highlighted how Charlie‘s legacy influenced young people to engage in thoughtful discussion, lean on God, and become civically engaged – all ideals that make our nation great.

Leader Scalise’s remarks:“Mr. Speaker, we still have heavy hearts. We’re still mourning the loss of our friend Charlie Kirk, who was such an inspirational leader to millions across this country. As we’ve seen since his horrific assassination, he inspired not only people here in America, but all around the world, as you see the outpouring of love. Charlie was a man who had so much love for other people. He had love for our country. Charlie talked about why it was so important that we debate our differences, something that shouldn’t be a novel issue, Mr. Speaker, something that is part of the foundation of what makes this country great and unique, what separates America from so many other failed examples of government, because we are that experiment in self-governance, in democracy. And part of that ability to self-govern is that we’re going to have disagreements and that we have the ability to express those disagreements with each other, but in a civil way, in a way where it doesn’t lead to political violence. And in times like this, we reflect on a lot of things, but more than anything, Mr. Speaker, we lean on our faith.“Charlie Kirk had tremendous faith. When you look above the Speaker’s rostrum, it says right there, here in the people’s House, ‘In God we trust.’ And it’s times like this where we really do need to trust in God because God knows the answers. Charlie believes strongly in God and that faith in God is what will get us through tough times like this. In fact, Charlie talked a number of times about how he would want to be remembered, and he talked about how he would want to be remembered for his courage in his faith and what an example he was for faith for so many young people. “You look at college campuses all across this country right now, and you see mourning, but you see more young people driven to get involved in this process. Turning Point has had requests from over 50,000 people since Charlie Kirk’s assassination to start new chapters on college or high school campuses. This movement that Charlie started is just getting started. It will only grow. And his incredibly strong widow, Erika, who was just named the head of Turning Point to continue that legacy has vowed to make sure that what Charlie stood for, what he represented, the movement that Charlie Kirk built, will endure. It will grow, and it will continue to inspire millions more people to want to get involved in government, want to question leadership, want to maybe question their own views, the things they might have been taught by people in schools that had ulterior motives, that might have been trying to indoctrinate them into some other viewpoint so that now they had the power and the courage to think for themselves. How powerful is that? “Those are the things that Charlie left behind that will endure, Mr. Speaker. And so this resolution is so important to remember that legacy, remember that this was a young man, still a young man, but even younger, at 18, a young student with an idea that said, ‘What’s happening in the schools is wrong.’ What needs to be taught is something broader. We need to get back to a respect for each other’s differences of opinion. And that’s what drove him to start a movement at such a young age. Let all young people be inspired by that recognition that the power of ideas still can move a nation. That’s what Charlie Kirk reminded all of us. Mr. Speaker, we’re never going to forget that. We’re never going to forget the legacy of Charlie Kirk, but that legacy will live on and only grow stronger. God bless you, Charlie Kirk.”

Scalise: We are Not a Nation that Settles Political Differences with Violence

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steve Scalise (1st District of Louisiana)

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) joined Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.), Congressman Tony Wied (R-Wis.), and fifth-generation rancher Kevin Kester to discuss Charlie Kirk’s life and legacy, the media’s role in promoting inciting rhetoric, and how Republicans are taking action this week to build on the success of President Trump’s efforts to make DC safer and strengthen America’s energy dominance.

On the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk:“We still mourn the loss of Charlie Kirk. For anybody that watched Friday night when his widow, Erika, spoke so powerfully about Charlie’s impact, of course, on her and her family first, but on the country, and now, as we’ve seen on the world. It just reminds us how powerful the idea of one person’s idea can be, because that’s what Charlie represented when he started Turning Point at 18 years old. It was an idea, and that idea became a movement. And anybody who thought they were going to snuff out that movement with an assassin’s bullet they were clearly, clearly underestimating the power of Charlie’s idea and the inspiration that he has now given to millions and millions of people all across this country. And in that momentum, that inspiration is only going to grow.”On the legacy media’s role in promoting incendiary rhetoric: “His assassination also gives us a moment to reflect about how we can all do better, how we can try to stop this, unfortunately, too common cycle that we’re seeing. And as we reflect, we all need to look at ourselves. Are the things we’re saying – can we do better there? But I do think it’s an important moment for the media as well, because when you look at just this example with Charlie, and there have been some studies that have been done that have taken, just for example, President Trump and the word ‘fascism.’ One network alone used that combination of words over 3,000 times. 3,000 times mainstreaming that combination of words in just the last three years. And whether some realize it or not, that magnification is heard by the wrong person. And we’ve seen people, deranged people, take action, think that that’s a call to take action. “In the case of Charlie, he was called those things, too. And there are leaders up here that throw that word around about anybody that they disagree with. And if it’s amplified in the media, and the wrong deranged person hears it and decides to take action. In the case of Charlie’s assassin, he wrote the word ‘fascist’ on the bullet. And it’s just an example that we can all do better. And we can all do our part to not allow that kind of hateful speech to become mainstream and stand up against it so that we don’t see this become the norm in America. It’s not who America is. We are not a nation that settles our differences with violence. We settle our political differences at the ballot box, and that’s the way it always has to be for a free and fair democratic society to endure. We will endure, and Charlie’s legacy will endure, but it’s only going to endure when we all resolve to do better.”On keeping DC safe:“I want to talk about this week. Obviously, we have a very busy week. We are dealing more with DC crime. The Oversight Committee has passed out a number of bills. We’re taking some of those bills this week and moving them on the House floor. These are bills we worked very closely with President Trump to bring. He’s done a lot on his own to make DC safer. You could see the numbers: Thousands of criminals arrested, seven young people that were lost that are now found. So many people around here that feel safer because of the actions that were taken. But there’s still ordinances on the books that make it hard for the hardened criminals to get arrested, and even if they’re arrested, to get put in jail and be held accountable for their crimes. And we’re bringing bills to address that this week.”On House Republicans unleashing American energy:“We’re also bringing some more good energy security bills to the floor so that America can continue to be the dominant energy nation in the world. It’s great for families when they pay lower gas prices. It creates jobs. It helps all of our friends around the world. It takes away the leverage from countries like Russia who make billions of dollars a month selling their energy on world markets. If we can produce more here, we’re going to continue advancing that here on the House floor this week.”

Scalise Honors Charlie Kirk’s Life and Legacy at Prayer Vigil

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steve Scalise (1st District of Louisiana)

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) joined Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.), and House colleagues to honor Charlie Kirk’s life and legacy of Christian faith and free speech. Leader Scalise highlighted Charlie’s legacy and the profound impact he had across the world.

Click here or the image above to view Leader Scalise’s full remarks.
On Charlie Kirk’s enduring legacy:“Charlie Kirk was taken from us way too soon. So young, but yet you think about the impact that this young man had on this great country. Frankly, if you look at the last few days, you can see the impact that Charlie Kirk had on the entire world. To see the outpouring, as the Speaker said, of love, and truly so much love for Charlie and what he represented, and for the beautiful family he left behind. Erika, the powerful words that Erika spoke the other night, hopefully continue to show America and the world that Charlie’s legacy will live on and endure. “What he stood for needs to endure because what brought Charlie to public life was really first a concern that the ability to go to college just to learn and to express your own ideas, maybe even ideas of disagreement with somebody else, with a professor, that those powerful ideas were being threatened on our campuses. That was eroding. That free speech, that ability to debate in a civil way, was being taken away. And he wasn’t one of those people that just said he was going to complain about it. He actually vowed to do something about it. He didn’t just start an organization called Turning Point USA. Charlie Kirk started a movement, a movement that’s going to grow and thrive and represent those ideals that Charlie hopefully instilled in people that didn’t even agree with him. He was asked what he wanted to be remembered for. Not something, frankly, that young people would be asked, but he was asked that. And what he said is, ‘I want to be remembered for courage for my faith. That would be the most important thing. The most important thing is my faith in my life.’ And you could see it when you listened to him. It’s what gravitated millions of people to Charlie Kirk. And it wasn’t just young people on college campuses.” On the importance of engaging in civil debate: “People, seasoned veterans of political discourse, were drawn to that same message because it wasn’t just about debating politics. It was about expressing your faith and why it’s so important to be able to do that freely. And we can never live in fear. We can never let whatever people think drives them not to debate, but to try to resort to political violence. It can never be accepted as the norm in this great country. It goes against everything that our country was founded upon.  “In fact, the most powerful notion of America was not just that our rights are granted to us by God, but that you have the right to question your government. You have a right to question your leaders and then to do something about it. And the way you do something about it is you settle those differences at the ballot box. And Charlie truly believed that. He led movements to get young people engaged in the political process, and it truly has made a difference. And that will not end. In fact, just judging by the tens of thousands of people who reached out over the weekend and said they want to start their own Turning Point chapters in their colleges or in their high schools, shows you that this movement will only grow, and it needs to grow.” On leaning on our Christian faith: “At this time, it’s also important that we lean on our faith because we can all question, ‘Why?’ Why was Charlie taken? Why are those two beautiful young kids going to grow up without their father? Let us vow that Erika is always going to have our prayers and our support, that she’s able, and she will make sure those young kids know the power of their father. They will always remember Charlie.  “When we think about our faith, I think about Isaiah 43. In Isaiah 43, the Lord says, ‘Do not fear, for I have redeemed you. I have summoned you by name. You are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. And when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned. The flames will not set you ablaze, for I am the Lord, your God, the Holy one of Israel, your Savior.’  God bless you, Charlie Kirk.”

Scalise: Legacy Media Must Do More to Condemn Inciting Rhetoric and Political Violence

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steve Scalise (1st District of Louisiana)

NEW ORLEANS, La.—Today, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) joined Fox News’ Fox and Friends Weekend to denounce political violence and call out the mainstream media for its role in dangerous rhetoric and political violence. Leader Scalise also highlighted President Trump’s successful efforts to make DC safer.

Click here or the image above to view Leader Scalise’s full interview.
On dangerous rhetoric leading to political violence:“Well, we’re all heartbroken still. It’s just one of those things that I think it brings people together. It reminds people just how fragile life is, but it also reminds us that there are people out there that, for whatever reason, think that political violence is okay. That’s why we’ve always got to be so vocal against it. Leaders on both sides. But I do think the media plays a role, too, when certain segments of the mainstream media allow for the things that incite political violence to be considered okay. It contributes to that climate.“There’s some of us that call this out all the time when we see the kind of rhetoric that incites people to go commit violence. We cherish our free speech, but you do see in the mainstream media, if a conservative says a certain thing, they’re going to go blister that person. But if a liberal is saying things like ‘fascist’ and ‘Trump’s this and that,’ and they equate conservatism to naziism. They do it all the time. I mean, MSNBC, you look at there was a recent study, over 3,000 times in the last three years, they equated Trump and fascism. MSNBC, I’m not talking about elected leaders. When the media, the old legacy media, thinks that that’s okay, and then you look at some of these shooters, and they’re using those exact same terms when they’re trying to go kill their political opponents, there is a connection, and I think everybody needs to do better. Elected leaders surely need to do better, but the legacy media needs to recognize their role in calling this out, not allowing it to become mainstream.”On President Trump’s crackdown on DC crime:“President Trump has done a phenomenal job at keeping DC safe and making that a priority, looking now at other cities. Look, you can even see the mayor of DC said she wants that protection to stay. But they’ve made hundreds of arrests of violent criminals, of gang members. There are young children who were missing who are now found because President Trump brought the National Guard to DC. You don’t see that reported enough, but it’s making a real difference.”

Congressmen Cohen and Carson Introduce the Aviation Funding Stability Act

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09)

WASHINGTON – Congressmen Steve Cohen (TN-9), the former Ranking Member of the Aviation Subcommittee, and Andre Carson (IN-7), a Member of the Aviation Subcommittee, today introduced the Aviation Funding Stability Act, a measure that would allow the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to keep all of its programs running and all of its employees working by drawing from its Airports and Airways Trust Fund during any lapse in typical government appropriations.  The current temporary budget agreement ends September 30.

Under the current proposal, the FAA’s authorization to draw from the Airport and Airway Trust Fund during a shutdown will be permitted only for up to 30 days if no appropriations bill is enacted, rather than for an indefinite period. The Airport and Airway Trust Fund, which funds the U.S. national air transportation system, typically generates enough revenue from the domestic passenger ticket tax, commercial fuel tax, general aviation gasoline tax, and cargo tax to sustain FAA programs during a lapse.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“The Aviation Funding Stability Act is intended to prevent disruptions in aviation safety operations, air traffic control staffing, and certification processes that are vital to the U.S. economy and our national security. At a time when air travel is already strained by staffing shortages, outdated infrastructure, and record flight delays, the last thing we need is another crisis that puts safety and efficiency at risk.

“The aviation system is too critical to be caught up in Washington’s budget battles. This bill would allow the FAA to tap into the Airport and Airway Trust Fund to keep essential operations running, so planes stay in the air, safety inspections continue, and modernization projects don’t grind to a halt. At a time with continued government uncertainty, this measure is a no brainer and just makes sense.”

Congressman Carson made the following statement:

“America’s aviation system is the safest and most efficient in the world. It contributes trillions of dollars to our national economy and supports millions of American jobs. A government shutdown should not interrupt aviation or create unnecessary chaos. This bill ensures that the FAA can keep operating without disruptions, which is critical to protect public safety and the livelihoods of aviation workers who keep our country and economy moving.”

The measure is supported by several organizations such as: Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), Airlines For America (A4A), Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA), American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA), National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), National Air Transportation Association (NATA), National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM), Professional Aviation Safety Specialists, AFL-CIO (PASS), Southwest Airlines Pilots Association (SWAPA), and the Regional Airline Association.

An identical measure was introduced in the 117th Congress by retired Oregon Congressman Peter DeFazio and then-Aviation Subcommittee Chair Rick Larsen in June of 2021.

Endorsing organizations statements:

“We cannot allow politics to disrupt aviation safety and security,” said Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, representing 55,000 Flight Attendants at 20 airlines. “During the 2019 shutdown, our system was stretched to the breaking point, and further strained by the pandemic. A shutdown today could have catastrophic consequences for our entire economy and most importantly, for our safety and security. We urge Congress to pass the Aviation Funding Stability Act to ensure that our nation’s aviation workers are able to continue our vital work without disruption.”

“Now is not the time to put critical FAA functions and programs at risk because of a political stalemate in Washington,” said ACI-NA President and CEO Kevin M. Burke. “The last government shutdown lasted longer than anyone expected and took a tremendous toll on our aviation system. Dedicated air traffic controllers, security officers, and other federal personnel stayed on the job without getting a paycheck. Flight delays and cancellations rippled across the system and our economy, and important airport infrastructure projects were stalled. We appreciate Reps. Cohen and Carson for putting forward this important legislation to keep the FAA and its workers open for business in the event of another government shutdown.”

“APFA endorses the Aviation Funding Stability Act to ensure that critical FAA functions are not interrupted if the government is not funded. Shutdowns are costly to any agency that is already stretched thin, and in aviation we don’t take chances. Our industry is built upon mitigating risk, so if planes are to continue flying during a government shutdown, every FAA employee and air traffic controller must remain on the job with pay to continue their safety-critical roles. Thank you, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) and Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN-7), for reintroducing this bill to ensure that funding interruptions will not impact the safety of the flying public.” – Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) National President Julie Hedrick, representing 29,000 American Airlines Flight Attendants

Congressmen Cohen, Fitzpatrick and Garcia Introduce the Safe Streets for All Reauthorization and Improvement Act

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09)

WASHINGTON – Congressmen Steve Cohen (TN-9), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-1), and Robert Garcia (CA-42) today introduced the Safe Streets for All Reauthorization and Improvement Act. The measure reauthorizes and strengthens the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program whose life-saving projects in more than 1,600 communities across the United States are reducing roadway fatalities and serious accidents.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Memphis ranks worst in the country among major cities for pedestrian fatalities, and studies indicate the numbers have steadily increased. Much of the problem is attributable to the emphasis on automobile use of our roadways, not alternative infrastructure like bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and lighted crosswalks. The SS4A program supports both the development of local roadway safety plans and the implementation of data-driven, community-focused infrastructure improvements. We have a long way to go in equipping local communities with tools to protect pedestrians, cyclists, scooter-riders, motorists and transit riders. This is critical legislation that will save lives.”

Congressman Fitzpatrick made the following statement:

“PA-1 is a proud walking and biking community — it’s part of what makes our district such a special place to call home. Every day, kids walk to school, families ride to our parks, and neighbors cross busy streets to reach our Main Street small businesses and transit. The Safe Streets for All Act invests directly in our community, giving us the resources to fix dangerous intersections, add crosswalks and bike lanes, and protect everyone who uses our roads.”

Congressman Garcia made the following statemen:

“We know how important it is to invest in making our roads and streets safer across the country. The Safe Streets and Roads for All program has been an incredibly successful investment that makes our communities safer. I’m proud to support this bill to strengthen its impact and save lives.”

Endorsing organization statements:

“With roadway fatalities and injuries at historically high levels, a comprehensive approach to roadway safety is urgently needed. The Safe Streets for All Reauthorization and Improvement Act, offers this by improving roadway infrastructure and preserving localities’ ability to achieve targeted infrastructure enhancements. Traffic calming measures and roundabouts, which improve safety and traffic flow, benefit all road users. Advocates lauds Representatives Steve Cohen (D-TN), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Robert Garcia (D-CA) for their bipartisan leadership to advance roadway safety and protect the American public.” — Cathy Chase, President, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety

From Transportation for America:

“SS4A has been a powerful mechanism for providing direct, rapid support to local communities to make their streets safer for everyone, allowing those who know their communities best to receive federal funds directly. We applaud this bipartisan, commonsense fix to direct more SS4A money to capital projects, and we hope that the next authorization will eliminate the need for programs like SS4A by prioritizing safety with all federal formula programs and holding states accountable for making measurable progress on safety.”

“Safety is a major issue on our nation’s roads. ASCE assigned U.S. roads a grade of ‘D+’ in the 2025 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure, partially due to having the second-highest rate of traffic fatalities of any nation across the globe,” said Feniosky Peña Mora, Sc.D., P.E., President, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). “The Safe Streets and Roads for All Program helps addresses this by funding plans and projects intended to prevent roadway fatalities and serious injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates 39,345 people died in traffic crashes on the nation’s roads in 2024. Reauthorizing the Safe Streets and Roads for All Program will enable counties, cities, metropolitan planning organizations, Tribal governments, and other entities to concentrate on implementing solutions that can improve the safety of their communities. ASCE thanks Reps. Steve Cohen and Brian Fitzpatrick for introducing legislation to reauthorize and improve this critical program.”

“The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program provides critically needed support to local communities across the country to improve transportation safety, reduce injuries, and save lives. Trust for Public Land supports SS4A because investments in local transportation safety result in safer routes to schools, parks, and other everyday destinations for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and commuters of all kinds. We applaud Congressman Cohen and his colleagues for introducing this important legislation to reauthorize and improve SS4A.” — J.T. Horn, Senior Director of the Trails Initiative, Trust for Public Land

“The Safe Streets for All Reauthorization and Improvement Act gives local and regional leaders the resources and flexibility they need to make smart, life-saving investments in their communities. Placing decision-making power in the hands of those closest to the problem will enable communities to build safer streets and save lives.” — Erich Zimmermann, Executive Director, National Association of Regional Councils

“The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) is proud to support the Safe Streets for All Reauthorization and Improvement Act. The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program is a vital tool in advancing our nation’s roadway safety. By providing resources directly to local, regional and tribal governments, SS4A empowers communities to perform vital safety projects that move us closer to the goal of zero deaths on our nation’s roadways. We thank Reps. Cohen, Fitzpatrick, and Garcia for introducing this legislation and building on the program’s success in order to save lives and prevent injuries on our roads.” — Stacy Tetschner, President and CEO, American Traffic Safety Services Association

“The Safe Streets and Roads for All Program is making streets safer and saving lives in communities of every size,” said Jenn Dice, president and CEO of PeopleForBikes. “Whether you drive, bike, or walk, everyone deserves to get home safely. Reauthorizing this program means investing in proven solutions that prevent crashes, strengthen local economies, and connect communities. We thank Representative Cohen, Representative Fitzpatrick, and Representative Garcia for leading on this critical effort to keep Americans safe.”

“The safety of our roads is paramount,” said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. “The Safe Streets and Roads for All program has invested in safety in more than 1,600 communities since its inception and we applaud those in Congress leading the charge to ensure this vital work continues. The Safe Streets for All Reauthorization and Improvement Act is an investment in safer communities and saving lives.”

“AARP, which advocates for the more than 100 million Americans age 50 and older, is pleased to endorse the Safe Streets for All Reauthorization and Improvement Act. This important legislation reauthorizes and enhances the Safe Streets and Roads for All program, building on Congress’s work to reduce traffic fatalities and improve roadway safety across the nation…AARP appreciates your bipartisan leadership in sponsoring this critical legislation, and we look forward to working with you to ensure its enactment.” — Bill Sweeney, Senior Vice President, AARP Government Affairs

The Safe Streets for All Reauthorization and Improvement Act would:

  • Reauthorize the SS4A program at $5 billion annually from Fiscal Year 2027 through Fiscal Year 2031; and
  • Lower the planning grant set-aside to a minimum of 20 percent of annual program funding, which is a significant decrease from the original 40 percent, ensuring adequate implementation funding.

In 2023, more than 40,000 people died in traffic crashes across the United States. Pedestrian deaths alone reached a 40-year high in 2022, with 7,522 people struck and killed while walking. These numbers are not inevitable; they are preventable.

By allocating additional funding toward implementation, the Safe Streets for All Reauthorization and Improvement Act builds on the proven success of the SS4A program to move us closer to the goal of zero roadway fatalities.

The bill is supported by AARP, Advocates for Highway & Auto Safety, American Heart Association, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), KABOOM!, League of American Bicyclists, National Association of Counties (NACo), PeopleforBikes, Rails to Trails, Transportation for America (T4A), Trust for Public Land, and over 50 state and local organizations listed here.

Congressman Cohen Introduces the John Tanner and Jim Cooper Fairness and Independence in Redistricting (FAIR) ACT

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09)

Measure named for former Tennessee Congressmen who championed fair representation in Congress

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today introduced the John Tanner and Jim Cooper Fairness and Independence in Redistricting (FAIR) Act, which would require states to remove politics from the their congressional apportionment and require independent redistricting commissions. The measure is named for former Tennessee Congressmen John Tanner and Jim Cooper who for decades championed an end to partisan gerrymandering.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Donald Trump and the Republican Party are in the process of a mid-cycle redistricting push, explicitly for partisan political gain and to extend control of the House. They have put power over representative government, subverting our democracy. We must fight back. In the short run, we need to neutralize this blatant power grab. Longer term, we need to improve our systems and ensure our elected leaders are representative of – and responsive to – the people. As the New York Times Editorial Board recently wrote, ‘Fairness means striving for congressional delegations and state legislatures that reflect the people they represent.’”

Starting after the 2030 census, the FAIR Act would require each state to appoint an independent and transparent congressional redistricting commission.  The commission would be charged with creating a redistricting plan that emphasizes geographical contiguity and compactness of districts rather than political affiliations or the impact a district’s lines may have on incumbent representatives.

The state legislature and the governor may approve or reject the commission’s plan, but may not amend it. If the governor does not sign into law a plan by November 1st in the year before a congressional reapportionment, the commission may forward plans to the state’s highest court, which may select a plan without amendments. If the state court is unable to select a plan, the federal district court must develop and publish a final redistricting plan. The bill also prohibits a state from redistricting until after the next census unless it is under court order to do so.

Congressman Cohen Questions FBI Director Kash Patel

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09)

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today questioned FBI Director Kash Patel at an oversight hearing. The Congressman commended the FBI for working with local police, encouraged additional collaboration, but questioned whether the National Guard that President Trump has ordered to Memphis will be helpful. In response to one question, Patel said “I love Memphis,” and mentioned Beale Street.

Congressman Cohen also asked about the victims of Jeffrey Epstein and whether they have been questioned by the agency.

In his exchange with Patel, Congressman Cohen said in part:

“We have a crime problem in Memphis… the FBI has helped…I don’t think the National Guard is going to help…It’s not a ‘troubled’ city. It’s got some crime but it’s not a ‘troubled’ city. We love our city and hope the National Guard doesn’t come in and cause people to have questions about Memphis.”

On the Epstein case, Congressman Cohen said, “If there’s no statute of limitations (on sex crimes), should you not be interviewing those people who know who raped them?…It seems like that would be a treasure trove of information…”

Patel responded: “Sir, I couldn’t agree with you more.”

See the entire exchange here.
