Pingree Releases Statement on Reported ‘End’ to ICE’s ‘Operation Catch of the Day’

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (1st District of Maine)

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released the following statement in response to reports that the Department of Homeland Security has ended “Operation Catch of the Day” in Maine:

I cannot independently confirm this announcement because the Department of Homeland Security has not provided my office with basic information about this operation, despite repeated requests for weeks.

On January 22, I sent a formal oversight letter to Secretary Noem asking for a full accounting of who was detained, under what legal authority, and where individuals were taken. I have received no response. Senator King and my office also requested a joint meeting with DHS leadership to discuss what was happening in Maine. We received no response.

If these enhanced operations have in fact ceased, that may reduce the visible federal presence in our state. But I think it is important that people understand what we saw during this operation: individuals who are legally allowed to be in the United States, whether by lawful presence or an authorized period of stay, following the rules, and being detained anyway.

That is not limited to this one operation. That has been the pattern of this Administration’s immigration enforcement over the past year, and there is no indication that policy has changed.

The unfortunate reality is, ending this surge and removing additional officers does not mean a return to how immigration enforcement functioned in Maine “for many years.” What we have seen over the past year is radically different. The standard now appears to be broad, aggressive detentions and removals that do not distinguish between people who are here unlawfully, and people who are awaiting decisions on pending cases or have another valid status.

I continue to seek a full accounting from DHS of who was detained, what their immigration status was, and where they are currently located. Until those answers are provided, serious questions remain about how this Department is operating in our state and what Mainers should expect going forward.

I remain ready to meet with DHS at any time to ensure that immigration enforcement in Maine is carried out lawfully, transparently, and with respect for the people and communities affected.

Rep. Lauren Underwood Introduces Two New Bills Expanding Access to Farmers’ Markets and Healthy Local Food

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14)

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) introduced the Farmers to Families Act, bipartisan legislation co-led by Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ-02), and the New Markets for Farmers and Families Act. Together, these bills expand opportunities for farmers to sell their products and increase our community’s access to healthy, fresh, and local food.

The New Markets for Farmers and Families Act strengthens the Farmers’ Market and Local Food Promotion Program at USDA and provides dedicated funding to open new farmers’ markets in neighborhoods without them. The legislation increases funding for the program and reduces barriers for farmers to reach families in underserved areas.

The Farmers to Families Act modernizes the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to make it easier for families to buy fresh food from local farmers. The legislation also makes it easier for local farmers to accept WIC benefits, and expands technical assistance and support for farmers and farmers’ markets at USDA.

“Illinois agriculture goes far beyond commodity crops—our farmers also grow world-class fruits and vegetables that help keep our families fed and healthy. Every family in our community should have the opportunity to purchase fresh, healthy, Illinois-grown food,” said Congresswoman Underwood. “With these bills, we are modernizing outdated systems so farmers can sell directly to their communities, and we’re making sure that families can easily use their benefits to purchase that fresh and local food.”

“This bill cuts red tape, supports local farmers, and makes it easier for families to buy fresh, healthy food,” said Congressman Van Drew. “It’s a no-cost, common-sense update that keeps federal dollars working in our local farm economy. That’s why I’m proud to co-lead this effort.”

“The Farmers Market Coalition is pleased to endorse the Farmers to Families Act,” said Willa Sheikh, Executive Director, Farmers Market Coalition, “The bill takes important steps to increase income opportunities for small-scale farmers, while providing more healthy food choices for families who rely on WIC.”

“Federal nutrition benefits, like WIC, are essential for many low-income families to access healthy foods, yet regulations make it difficult for families to use their benefits for fresh foods from local farmers,” said Hannah Quigley, Policy Specialist, National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition. “This needlessly reduces access for families and diverts money away from local farmers to dollar or corner stores. NSAC thanks Representatives Underwood and Van Drew for their leadership in introducing the Farmers to Families Act – a pragmatic solution to allow families more access to farm fresh products for families and greater market access for farmers.”

Farmers’ markets across northern Illinois offer families fresh food grown on Illinois farmland, such as peaches, apples, grapes, horseradish, and melons. But outdated rules make it difficult to use nutrition benefits at local markets. At the same time, many farmers are locked out of federal nutrition programs due to redundant application processes, a need for multiple payment devices, and a lack of technical support.

The Farmers to Families Act is supported by the Farmers’ Market Coalition and the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition.

Davids Pushes Affordable Afterschool Care for Kansas Families During School Visit

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Sharice Davids (KS-3)

KANSAS CITY, KS – Today, Representative Sharice Davids visited Emerson Elementary School’s afterschool program to meet with students and staff and highlight the importance of affordable, accessible afterschool care for Kansas families. During the visit, Davids discussed her newly introduced bipartisan legislation to expand access to afterschool programs by reducing cost and logistical barriers that prevent many working parents from enrolling their children.

“Afterschool programs give kids a safe place to learn and grow while giving parents peace of mind that their children are supported,” said Davids. “But for too many Kansas families, cost, transportation, and limited availability put these programs out of reach. My bipartisan bill is about using common-sense partnerships to help communities expand available slots, lower program costs, and make afterschool care work better for parents — so moms and dads can stay at work knowing their children are safe and thriving.”

WATCH: Davids speaks on her new bipartisan bill while visiting an afterschool program

“Children throughout the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos can benefit from the after-school programs available in our community, but too many struggle to access them,” said Congressman Ryan Mackenzie (R-PA-07). “That’s why the Afterschool ACCESS Act reforms the tax code to incentivize more public-private partnerships — creating more opportunities for Pennsylvania kids. By freeing up space and transportation for temporary use by providers, this legislation provides the flexibility and versatility that children and families need.”

The Afterschool Access Through Charitable Contributions for Enrichment and Student Support (ACCESS) Act incentivizes public-private partnerships by allowing charitable tax deductions for the part-time use of private property and transportation to support afterschool programs. By unlocking access to physical space, safe transportation, and other essential resources, the bill helps communities overcome the biggest barriers facing afterschool providers — without increasing costs for families.

At Emerson Elementary School, Davids toured the afterschool program, spoke with educators and staff, and met with students participating in enrichment activities. The visit highlighted how afterschool programs support academic success, provide safe and structured environments, and help working families balance their schedules.

According to a recent Afterschool Alliance report, 75 percent of Kansas children whose parents want afterschool care are unable to access it. Cost, lack of transportation, and limited availability remain the most common obstacles. Nationwide, parents report that afterschool programs improve workplace productivity and provide peace of mind, while giving children opportunities to build critical academic and life skills.

Supporter Quotes:

“After-school programming in USD 500 plays a vital role in supporting families by providing a safe, supportive environment for students,” said Mechelle Wortham, Coordinator, KidZone program at Emmerson Elementary. “These programs help build strong partnerships between schools, families, and the broader community, while exposing students to activities they might not otherwise experience—such as partnerships with Scouting programs, martial arts, the YMCA, 4-H, and more.”

“The Kansas Enrichment Network is grateful to raise awareness around the critical role afterschool programs play across the state,” said Michael Lemon, Director, Kansas Enrichment Network. “Out-of-school time opportunities such as KidZone at Emerson Elementary connect communities, support working families, and expand learning and growth beyond school hours. To sustain programs and ensure affordable access to quality afterschool opportunities for Kansans, it is vital to align the needs of today’s youth with local, statewide, and national support.”

“To support positive youth development and the stability of working families, we must address the barriers keeping millions of children out of quality out-of-school time programs,” said John Wilson, President, Kansas Action for Children. “The Afterschool ACCESS Act provides a common-sense, bipartisan solution by incentivizing businesses to contribute the spaces and transportation necessary to maintain and expand programs. This legislation is a vital investment in our children’s future and the continued growth of our communities.”

“We appreciate the leadership from Representative Sharice Davids on this issue,” said Paul Bean, Executive Director, Franklin County Development Council. “Funding is the critical barrier for many families, especially in rural communities such as Franklin County. Affordability is the key issue among families with young children. Food prices have increased substantially, so it limits family budgets to cover afterschool cost. Representative Davids understands this affordability issue, and we appreciate her efforts to help our young families with this important service.”

“Students in afterschool programs make impressive gains in grades, school attendance, behavior, and more — but too many of our children and youth are missing out,” said Jodi Grant, Executive Director, Afterschool Alliance. “The parents of 29.6 million children want afterschool programs for their children, but just 7 million kids are currently enrolled. The bipartisan Afterschool ACCESS Act would help increase access to afterschool programs by incentivizing public-private partnerships that can remove barriers to participation like transportation and support new programs at new sites.”

“The lack of affordable child care is a significant small business issue,” said John Arensmeyer, Founder and CEO, Small Business Majority. “Small Business Majority’s research has found that when small businesses cannot access child care, it has a number of major consequences, including forcing business owners to take time away from work, hire additional help, and even shut down their business in some cases. We are glad to see lawmakers working to address this problem, and we hope this is just the beginning of policy changes that will help address America’s child care affordability crisis.”

Davids, Colleagues Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Boost Ticket to Work Awareness

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Sharice Davids (KS-3)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Sharice Davids (KS-03), Rep. French Hill (AR-02), Rep. Jim Costa (CA-21), Rep. Donald Davis (NC-01), Rep. Max Miller (OH-07), and Rep. Blake Moore (UT-01) introduced the bipartisan Ticket to Work Awareness Act to increase awareness of an existing program that helps Americans with disabilities access job training, employment services, and support without risking their benefits.

Rep. Sharice Davids said,“Far too often, people who want to work and gain more independence don’t have clear information about the support available to them. This bipartisan bill makes sure Social Security actually reaches out to beneficiaries and clearly explains their options, so Kansans with disabilities can explore work and career opportunities without fear of losing the benefits they depend on. By improving awareness, we can help more families build financial stability and dignity through work — without adding cost or bureaucracy. I am glad to work with my Republican colleague, Representative French Hill, on this effort.”

Rep. Hill said, “Nearly two-thirds of eligible beneficiaries have no idea the Ticket to Work program exists. That is unacceptable. This commonsense bill improves outreach so people who want to work know what options are available to them, without adding new spending or growing government. I am proud to co-lead this bipartisan effort to correct the Social Security Administration’s failure to adequately communicate and promote this important program and support greater opportunities and independence for people with disabilities.”

“I’m proud to co-lead this bipartisan legislation to ensure people receiving Social Security disability benefits are aware of the Ticket to Work program,” said Rep. Costa. “Far too many individuals with disabilities across the San Joaquin Valley and the nation are unaware of the employment services readily available to them. This bill will strengthen outreach from the Social Security Administration and will allow beneficiaries to explore work opportunities without risking their benefits.”

The Ticket to Work program opens doors for eastern North Carolinians and others across the nation by offering training that leads to meaningful new careers and economic stability for their families,” said Congressman Don Davis. “True potential is unlocked when eligible participants know how to access these impactful training opportunities.”

“Too many Americans with disabilities who want to work and achieve financial independence simply don’t know the Ticket to Work program exists,” said Congressman Max Miller. “This legislation takes a simple, common-sense step to change that by requiring regular outreach, so eligible beneficiaries are aware of the opportunities and support available to them. Ticket to Work empowers Americans to pursue meaningful employment without risking their benefits, and increasing awareness will help more people gain independence, dignity, and a stronger future. I’m proud to cosponsor this bill to make sure no one is left in the dark about a program designed to help them succeed.”

Rep. Moore said, “The Ticket to Work program exists to give disability beneficiaries access to free vocational rehabilitation, employment, and other work-related support services while maintaining their benefits. Unfortunately, many of the people who could benefit the most from this program don’t know that it exists. I’m excited to work with my friend Chairman French Hill to introduce the Ticket to Work Advertisement Act to require regular advertising for the program, bringing awareness to the opportunities and support available to SSDI beneficiaries.”

Background:

The Ticket to Work (TTW) program was created with bipartisan support as part of an effort to promote work amongst those who receive Social Security disability benefits, such as Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

The Ticket to Work Advertisement Act requires the Commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA) to advertise the TTW program to beneficiaries at least every six months. SSA has 12 months for implementation.

Increasing awareness of the TTW program is a straightforward, cost-effective step toward improving the TTW program’s impact. Ensuring consistent SSA outreach will help beneficiaries understand and access the opportunities they have and deserve.

What is the Ticket to Work Program?

·    The TTW program allows beneficiaries ages 18-64 to obtain free employment services, vocational rehabilitation (VR) services, and other support services from approved providers to achieve specific work-related and career goals.

·    Participation is completely free and voluntary.

·    The purpose of the TTW program is to help individuals with disabilities experience working while connecting them to support and services they need to succeed in the workplace.

·    The goal of the TTW program is to help SSDI and SSI beneficiaries who can and want to achieve financial independence.

·    During the TTW program, participants do NOT lose their disability benefits.

Griffith Announces More Than $4.2 Million to Wytheville for Helene Relief

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA)

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded a Hurricane Helene-related grant to the Commonwealth of Virginia. This FEMA grant, worth $4,203,067.50, will help the Town of Wytheville repair its local wastewater treatment system. In response to this grant notice, U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement:

“Hurricane Helene severely impacted Southwest Virginia infrastructure, including the Wytheville Sewage Treatment Plant. Facility repairs are needed after damage to the facility’s concrete clarifiers, pumps, electrical relays and motor starters.

“This grant for more than $4.2 million helps the Town of Wytheville make permanent plant repairs and fully restore the operations of the Wytheville Sewage Treatment Plant.

“As Southwest Virginia communities seek to rebuild infrastructure impacted by Hurricane Helene, I will continue my work to secure federal support for our region’s recovery.”

BACKGROUND

FEMA funds are obligated to the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Commonwealth will be responsible for providing the funds to the sub-recipients.

Funds from these grants will help secure contracts to restore the facility, which is a class 2 plant designed to treat 4.0 million gallons per day of municipal and industrial wastes.

In January 2025, Rep. Griffith announced $46.67 million in Helene relief to Virginia from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

In April 2025, Congressman Griffith announced nearly $6 million in Helene relief for Washington County waterline.

House Foreign Affairs Ranking Member Meeks Issues Statement on ICE Attempt to Enter Ecuadorian Consulate

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Gregory W Meeks (5th District of New York)

Washington, D.C. – Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement in response to an apparent attempt by ICE agents to enter the Ecuadorian Consulate in Minneapolis without permission and in violation of international agreements.

“Yesterday’s attempt by ICE agents to force their way into the Ecuadorian Consulate represents yet another outrageous and unacceptable disregard for the rule of law by the Trump Administration’s Department of Homeland Security.

“Diplomatic facilities are protected for a reason. Any effort by U.S. law enforcement officials to enter another country’s diplomatic facility without permission is not only unlawful, it risks setting a profoundly dangerous precedent that could put American diplomats, servicemembers, and their families abroad at risk.

“It remains clear that ICE is completely out of control, operating without rules, restraint, or accountability—not to mention any agency coordination with Secretary of State Marco Rubio on matters related to our foreign relations. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem must resign immediately or face impeachment. Congressional Republicans must join Democrats in setting guardrails on ICE to provide accountability for the American people and stop ICE agents from acting with impunity before they trigger another international incident.”

Rep. Mike Thompson Presents $375,000 Check to Yolo Food Bank for Mobile Food Pantry Project

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Mike Thompson Representing the 5th District of CALIFORNIA

Woodland, CA– Today, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) presented a $375,000 Community Project Funding (CPF) check to the Yolo Food Bank in support of its Mobile Food Pantry Project, expanding access to fresh, nutritious food for families and communities across Yolo County.

“I’m proud to deliver this funding to the Yolo Food Bank to support their Mobile Food Pantry Project and the critical work they do every day to fight hunger in our communities,” said Thompson. “No family should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from, and this investment will help ensure that more Yolo County residents have access to healthy, nutritious food, no matter where they live.”

“As affordability challenges continue to impact families across Yolo County, this generous gift of a Mobile Food Pantry Truck from Congressman Thompson arrives at a vital moment,” said Karen Baker, Executive Director of the Yolo Food Bank. “This vehicle will ensure our rural neighbors have reliable access to fresh, nutritious food through a seamless distribution process.”

The Mobile Food Pantry Project funding will support the purchase of a mobile pantry truck for the Yolo Food Bank, enabling the launch of a mobile pantry program to serve residents across Yolo County.

According to the Yolo Food Bank’s 2023 Yolo County Food Access Survey, nearly one-third of Yolo County residents experience food insecurity, and almost 20 percent of individuals in need do not currently access available food assistance resources.

This funding was secured through Congress’ FY2024 Community Project Funding (CPF) process and reflects Rep. Thompson’s continued commitment to improving food access and supporting vulnerable families across California’s 4th Congressional District.

About Community Project Funding (CPF)

Each year, Members of Congress may direct federal funding to a select number of Community Projects through the appropriations process. Under this process, each House Member may submit up to 15 project requests to the Appropriations Committee on behalf of their Congressional District, so long as the projects meet established criteria. Projects are competitively evaluated and subject to strict transparency and accountability requirements before inclusion in appropriations legislation.

WATCH: In Minneapolis, Pressley, Omar Condemn ICE Violence, Renew Calls to Abolish Rogue Agency

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07)

“There can never be justice, because true justice would mean that Renee Good and Alex Pretti and Keith Porter would still be alive, but there must be accountability.”

At the Invitation of Omar, Pressley Meeting with Organizers and Community Members Impacted by Violence Perpetrated by ICE

MINNEAPOLIS – Today, in South Minneapolis, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) hosted a press conference with Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (MN-05) in which she condemned the violence perpetrated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and renewed her calls to abolish ICE, impeach Kristi Noem, and end qualified immunity for ICE agents and other federal law enforcement. The presser followed the horrific ICE murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti and comes as the Senate takes up the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill, including $28 billion for ICE, which the Congresswoman voted against in the House.

At the invitation of Congresswoman Omar, Congresswoman Pressley is in Minneapolis to meet with organizers and community members impacted by ICE’s violent operation in Minnesota, where they have murdered bystanders, terrorized schools and small businesses, and abducted children and parents. On Wednesday, the lawmakers toured Karmel Mall, a hub holding over 100 small businesses and community organizations, many of which have reported a significant decline in business since Trump’s Operation Metro Surge began.

A transcript of Congresswoman Pressley’s remarks at the press conference is available below, and the video is available here.

Transcript: In Minneapolis, Pressley, Omar Condemn ICE Violence, Renews Calls to Abolish Rogue Agency
Minneapolis, MN
January 28, 2026

Thank you, Ilhan. Earlier today, we visited the sacred space where Alex Pretti was executed in broad daylight, an unarmed citizen whose last words were “don’t hurt her.”

One of the many tributes that was at that memorial in both scripture that I love as a woman of faith, and it’s Isaiah, Chapter 1 Verse 17, “do right, seek justice, defend the oppressed.”

And that is what brings me here today. Do right, seek justice, defend the oppressed.

I’m here as a sister in solidarity with Congresswoman Omar, I’m so grateful for her courageous and steadfast leadership. I’m here in solidarity with movement family, who I have been here many times, shoulder to shoulder, doing justice work alongside.

I am here to bear witness, I’m here to listen, and I’m here to help people process their grief and their trauma.

You know, we all understand that elections have consequences, but for the life of me, what I cannot understand is that when someone has a House, a Senate majority, has the White House and accomplices in the Supreme Court, why when you have all of that power, you would use it to enact harm on every person who calls this country home.

We have an occupant in the Oval Office who traffics and hate, is hell bent on inflicting hurt and harm and trauma on everyone who calls this country home, with a laser focus on our most vulnerable.

He has governed malice and used ICE agents to terrorize our cities, rip families apart, operating with impunity.

Rogue masked agents who violate people’s rights in the name of so called “law and order,” yet they detain, deport and kill our neighbors in cold blood, without due process.

To be clear, none of it has kept anyone safe because it has nothing to do with public safety, not in Minnesota, not in Massachusetts. It has everything to do with power, with control, with intimidation and oppression.

Earlier today, I met immigrants who make this country great, who make this state great, who fled authoritarian regimes in Colombia, Venezuela, Syria and Nicaragua. They came here for a better life and to make positive contributions, which they do, and they are so traumatized to be seeing in real time, the very authoritarian, fascist and cruel actions that they fled, showing up here in Minnesota and in this country.

All this has done is traumatize children, delay cancer patients chemotherapy, devastate small businesses and leave beloved community members like Renee Good and Alex Pretti dead on our streets.

The last time I was here at Karmel Mall, we broke bread together amongst bustling shoppers. It was vibrant and we laughed over sambuusas and drank Somali tea together.

Today, it is quiet. Today, it is quiet. It is quiet because of fear.

When we were at Midtown global market earlier today, we learned that Lake Street holds some 2,000 businesses, majority of which are owned by immigrants, that they are losing $30 million a month. Those are the sort of contributions that immigrants have been making to this economy.

[adjusts microphone]

So the point is this is devastating families and devastating the economy here.

That’s why we’re here today to stand in community, to choose community over chaos and cruelty.

We’re here because, although there can never be justice, because true justice would mean that Renee Good and Alex Pretti and Keith Porter would still be alive, but there must be accountability.

Listen, I’m the granddaughter of a Baptist preacher, I have no problem projecting.

Can you all hear me? Okay, okay. So if you want to have church, we will have church.

And I mean real church, not people who speak with a mouthful of scriptures, but walk with a heart full of hate.

You know, it has been incredible to be here in community today with people who are every day choosing community over chaos and over cruelty. People who are fighting in defense of the true values of this country and in defense of our neighbors.

This moment requires accountability.

This week, the Senate will take up legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security, which includes an additional $28 billion for ICE.

We are calling on all senators, Democrat and Republican, to vote no, because Congress should not be funding this campaign of terror.

And we can’t stop there.

The agents who brutalized and executed our neighbors cannot walk away freely. They must be held accountable for their crimes.

That means passing my bill to end qualified immunity for federal law enforcement, including ICE agents.

And it means impeaching Kristi Noem, who is as incompetent as she is dangerous. She is a dangerous cocktail of authority, bigotry and incompetence, and she must be impeached.

We need to abolish ICE and dismantle the systems of oppression that have gotten us to this point.

So again, I thank my sister in service for her courageous leadership, for the invitation to return to Minnesota once again to stand shoulder to shoulder with my movement family, to do right, to seek justice and to defend the oppressed.

Finally, I will say this: Donald Trump is a dictator, and the only way to beat a dictator is with defiance.

I thank the people of Minnesota for your defiance in this moment, and I’m here as your sister in solidarity.

This month, following the ICE murder of Renee Good, Congresswoman Pressley and Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) introduced the Qualified Immunity Abolition Act of 2026, which builds on the lawmakers’ prior work by granting victims the right to sue federal law enforcement officers—not just state and local—for civil rights violations and abolishing the defense of qualified immunity in these suits. The expanded legislation would help deliver accountability for families abused by law enforcement, including ICE agents.

Congresswoman Pressley delivered a floor speech on the need to end qualified immunity for federal law enforcement, including immigration officers. Watch the floor speech here.

Earlier this month, Congresswoman Pressley condemned the ICE murder of Renee Good in Minnesota and motioned to subpoena all records and footage related to the shooting, but Republicans obstructed it. Footage of Congresswoman Pressley’s motion to subpoena is here.
