LEADER JEFFRIES: “HEALTHCARE PREMIUMS, CO-PAYS AND DEDUCTIBLES ARE ABOUT TO SKYROCKET”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District of New York)

Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries held a press conference where he emphasized that Democrats are ready to negotiate an end to the government shutdown that lowers healthcare costs at any time, but Republicans are nowhere to be found.

LEADER JEFFRIES: It’s day three of the Trump Republican government shutdown and day 257 of the chaos that Donald Trump has been inflicting on the American people since the very beginning of his presidency. We’re in the midst of a government shutdown that has been caused by Donald Trump and Republicans to inflict further pain on the American people. The government is shut down right now because Donald Trump and Republicans refuse to provide healthcare to working-class Americans.

Throughout this week, Donald Trump has been missing in action. He remains in the presidential witness protection program. House Republicans are on vacation all across the country and the world, and Senate Republicans continue to vote on the same partisan Republican spending bill that’s dead on arrival because it guts the healthcare of the American people. Donald Trump and the Republicans are not behaving responsibly. They’re not behaving in a serious manner. They don’t want to reopen the government. And they certainly do not want to address the healthcare crisis that Republicans have created throughout this year, including as it relates to their One Big Ugly Bill that hurts everyday Americans in order to reward their billionaire donors.

Democrats made clear, including at the White House meeting on Monday, that healthcare premiums, co-pays and deductibles are about to skyrocket for tens of millions of Americans all across the country in an environment where the cost of living in this country is already too high. Donald Trump has already made life more expensive because of his tariffs and failed Republican policies. But that cost of living crisis is about to get worse particularly as it relates to healthcare costs.

Here are just three examples as it relates to the types of skyrocketing healthcare costs that everyday Americans are about to confront. In the Commonwealth of Virginia, by way of example, just one plan. Currently, this healthcare plan costs an everyday American, a working-class American, $595.94 a month. But because Republicans refuse to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credit, that same plan is going to go up to $1890 per month. How is that possible for working families to afford? That’s in Virginia.

In Idaho, Silver plan, currently available for $611 per month. But it’s now public information that because of the Republican refusal to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits, that same plan currently $611 per month will go up to $2083 a month in an environment where America is already too expensive, where the cost of living is already too high, where the Trump tariffs are already imposing thousands of dollars per year of additional costs. And now, healthcare costs are about to skyrocket out of control.

One final example. In Georgia, the Heart of Dixie, in the deep South, current Silver HMO plan from Kaiser Permanente. Currently, it costs $699 per month. But because of the Republican refusal to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits, that same plan currently $699 per month is about to skyrocket to $2763 a month. This is going to cause medical bankruptcy for some and millions of others will be unable to afford the healthcare that they need for themselves, their children and their families.

This is why. This is why we need to deal with the Republican healthcare crisis right now. Because the crisis is having real impact on working-class Americans right now. And the notion that there’s time to wait—think about this—that Republicans spent all year focused on their One Big Ugly Bill so they can permanently extend massive tax breaks for the wealthy, the well-off and the well connected, for their billionaire donors, in order to subsidize the lifestyles of the rich and shameless. That’s what they’ve done all year. And these tax breaks for the wealthy and the well-off, they were scheduled to expire on December 31st. But they spent months obsessed with rewarding their billionaire donors with massive tax breaks. But now claim that the Affordable Care Act tax credits, which expire at the same time as those tax breaks for their wealthy friends, no, they can’t be bothered. They can’t be bothered with extending them right now. Why is this? Because Republicans just want to gut healthcare for the American people. And Democrats will continue to stand on the side of the American people, fight for their healthcare, and improve their quality of life.

Amid Republican Government Shutdown, Pressley Holds Emergency Meeting to Highlight Harm to MA-07 Constituents

In Boston, Pressley Convened Workers, Patients, & Advocates to Underscore Impact, Demand Republicans Re-Open Government

Pressley Also Introduced Bill to Provide Back Pay for Federal Contractors, Including Low-Wage Food Service and Janitorial Staff

Video (YouTube) | Photo (Dropbox)

BOSTON – Today, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) convened an emergency meeting in Boston with workers, patients, labor leaders, and advocates to sound the alarm on the harm of Republicans’ government shutdown on workers and families from the Massachusetts 7th. Rep. Pressley and partners hosted a roundtable discussion and press conference highlighting the harmful impact of the Republican shutdown on the healthcare and livelihoods of families across the district.

This morning, Congresswoman Pressley, along with Senator Tina Smith (D-MN), also introduced legislation to secure back pay for the thousands of federal contract workers who face furloughs and missed paychecks when the federal government is shutdown. Unlike federal employees, the thousands of federal contract workers—including janitorial, food, and security services workers—have no assurances that they will receive back pay to make up for their loss of hours and pay during a shutdown. It is estimated that more than 327,000 federal contractors make under $15/per hour.

“The hurt and harm of this Republican-manufactured government shutdown is being felt all across our district, with workers and families seeing their lives and livelihoods threatened thanks to Donald Trump’s cruelty,” said Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley. “While Republicans move with contempt for the people and push our country into a dangerous shutdown, I’m centering the people most impacted and fighting daily to reopen the government, keep essential services running, and mitigate the shameful healthcare crisis Republicans created. I’m so grateful for the solidarity of our workers, families, and labor leaders across from across the Massachusetts 7th.”

Joining Congresswoman Pressley at the meeting today were Roxana Rivera, Assistant to the President, SEIU 32BJ; Nick Smith, VP at SEIU 1199; Lilly Simmons, President of AFGE local 3428; Ellen Mei, National Treasury Employees Union and Federal Unionist Network (FUN); Kyle Engels, National Federation of Federal Employees NFFE and Federal Unionist Network (FUN); Jay Trivedi, Uphams Corner Community Care; Guy Fish, Codman Square CHC; Sean Cahill, Fenway Health; Matt Mullaney, Charles River CHC; Charles Murphy, Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center; Jeannette McWilliams, MGB Chelsea Health Center; Jennifer Lemmerman, Project Bread; and workers, patients, labor leaders, and advocates from across Massachusetts.

“The Republicans who control the House, Senate and White House are hurting American workers coming and going. Because the Republicans will not extend Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, over 22 million Americans will soon see their health care premiums skyrocket by an average of 75%, including many 32BJ members working at Logan Airport, where baggage handlers, airline cabin cleaners and others must depend on state-sponsored healthcare even when they work full-time,” said 32BJ SEIU Assistant to the President Roxana Rivera.  “Instead of negotiating honestly to relieve these workers, Republicans have created a shutdown that also harms many of our union’s approximately 2,400 federally contracted security officers, office cleaners, and food service workers. Not only do they earn less than direct federal employees, they are also ineligible to receive backpay. That is why we are so thankful to Congresswoman Pressley for re-introducing legislation she originally co-sponsored that would restore lost income to contracted government workers who were furloughed or had their hours cut. There is no reason these hard workers should permanently suffer from Republican recklessness.”

“Republican leaders created this crisis when they decided to rip healthcare away from millions of working families to fund a trillion dollars in tax breaks for billionaires and the ultra-rich. And now, they’ve chosen to shut down our government because they refuse to lower healthcare costs for our families,” said Nick Smith, Vice President of Community Care at 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. “We need lower prices, not higher medical bills. We need to support healthcare workers, not strip them of their own healthcare coverage. We need to stop health insurance premiums from going up and protect Medicaid; not give more tax breaks to billionaires.”

“Food access is foundational to good health, and many families who are already struggling to put food on the table are being hit from every direction: rising costs, cuts to SNAP and Medicaid, and now the shutdown. Project Bread remains committed to supporting sustainable solutions like SNAP and school meals, but families in Massachusetts should not be forced into crisis by political gridlock,” said Jennifer Lemmerman, Chief Policy Officer at Project Bread, the leading food security organization in Massachusetts. “No one should have to choose between paying for medicine and putting food on the table. This is not a partisan issue—we are advocating for dignity, health, and survival.”

“The shutdown is the latest in the assault that we’ve been feeling as federal workers. Since January, federal workers across all agencies have been threatened with layoffs and office closures. We have seen so many of our co-workers walk out the door because of the uncertainty of if we’ll be RIFed next month or forced to relocate. Being understaffed as we are, our government has already been partially shut down. We are federal workers because we took an oath to serve and protect the American people. We want to work every day to provide services to help the American public,” said Ellen Mei, National Treasury Employees Union and Federal Unionist Network (FUN). “As a chapter president representing members at the Food and Nutrition Service, we understand that good nutrition and good health are inexplicably tied together. A mother on WIC needs to be able to buy baby formula for her infant child and also needs to be able to afford pediatrician visits.”

Footage of the roundtable is available here and video of the press conference is available here. Photos from the event are available here.

Without action by Donald Trump and Congress, many of the Affordable Care Act tax credits that help lower the cost of premiums will expire soon and tens of thousands of people in the Massachusetts 7th will see huge premium increases. In the Massachusetts 7th Congressional District:

  • 29,000 people will see their health care costs rise if Republicans let these critical tax credits expire; and
  • 35,512 people will lose health coverage because of Republican cuts to MassHealth in the Big Ugly Law and their plot to gut the Affordable Care Act.

This week, Rep. Pressley rallied with advocates, colleagues, and impacted folks to demand Republicans protect healthcare and keep the government open.

Congresswoman Pressley stood in solidarity with workers and families who would be impacted by the government shutdown.

Rep. Pressley also joined an all-day event with House Democrats to hold the line against Trump and Republicans’ efforts to rip away healthcare from millions of Americans.

Rep. Pressley issued a statement condemning Republicans after they chose to shut down the government rather than work with Democrats to protect families and save healthcare for millions.

Rep. Aguilar Holds Roundtable with Health Care Workers on Impact of Republican Medicaid Cuts

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Pete Aguilar (31 CD Ca)

In-Home Health Care workers and the people they serve depend on Medicaid for these services
Rep. Pete Aguilar recently held a roundtable with SEIU Local 2015 Members who provide in-home health care to seniors and people with disabilities in the Inland Empire to discuss how cuts to Medi-Cal made by Trump’s Big Ugly Law could hurt them and the people they care for.
“In-home health care workers care for hundreds of thousands of seniors and people with disabilities, allowing people to live with independence and dignity in their own homes,” said Rep. Pete Aguilar. “I heard directly from SEIU Local 2015 members who are in-home care workers, and the people they care for, about how Republican cuts to Medi-Cal in Trump’s Big Ugly Law are putting lives in danger. Seniors and people with disabilities here in the Inland Empire could lose the ability to live in their own homes, participate in their communities and access the care they need to thrive. I’ll keep fighting back against reckless attacks on health care and to protect this essential lifeline for Californians.”

Speaker Johnson, Leader Thune Host Press Conference on Day Three of the Democrat-Led Government Shutdown

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04)

WASHINGTON — On Day Three of the Democrat-led government shutdown, Speaker Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune held a press conference in Statuary Hall to continue to urge Senate Democrats to do their job and vote to reopen the government.

Watch Speaker Johnson’s full remarks here.

Below are Speaker Johnson’s remarks as delivered:

Good morning, everyone. Welcome to Day Three of the Democrat shutdown. You can see it’s pretty empty around here. There’s normally a lot of activity. On an average day, we have about 7,000 visitors here in the Capitol – school children and school groups and visitors and constituents, but they’re not here right now. Around the country, all around the country, right now, real pain is being endured by real people because the Democrats have decided to play politics. So, Leader Thune and I wanted to come out and do two things today, just give you a brief update on where things stand with this Democrat shutdown, and then to reiterate once more — present the simple facts about what we’re facing. This is necessary because the Democrats have a full out assault, spin the facts, and try to pretend as though they are not what they actually are.

Some of the mainstream media are participating in this as well. I was giving our leadership press conference yesterday, and in mid-sentence, I was cut off by one of the networks, CNN – CNN, I hope you’ll stay with us for a few more moments, because what I was about to say before they went to try to disclaim my remarks was, I was about to point to the very page in Chuck Schumer’s counterproposal continuing resolution that proves the very fact that we’ve been stating. So let me go through that very quickly. So everyone here has no question, and I want Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren and AOC and everybody else who’s been trying to spin this truth to watch and try to refute what I’m about to show you.

Now, here’s a visual aid. Okay? This is the bill. This is the counterproposal continuing resolution that Chuck Schumer and the Senate Democrats filed. Two weeks ago, mid-September, the House passed a clean, simple, continual resolution. It merely continues the Biden-era policies and spending that we’re enduring right now for seven more weeks to allow the appropriations process to continue — that’s Republicans and Democrats in both chambers working together to get the government funded. We ran out of time because the end of the fiscal year is September 30. We needed a few more weeks, so we sent it over. Ours is 24 pages in length. It says, let’s just keep the status quo. So this process, this procedure, this regular order can be done. Chuck Schumer rejected that. Senate Democrats rejected that now, three times, they voted against that measure.

And this is what they propose in advance in exchange for that. So instead, the counterproposal, this is page 57. This is on our website, go to Speaker.gov, and you can get all these visual aids for yourself. Alright, page 57, Section 2141. You see the highlighted language. There’s a lot of legalese in this legislation in these bills, but it says that they want to repeal the health subtitle changes. What does that refer to? You read down here, Public Law One 19-21. That’s the One Big Beautiful Bill, that’s the American Families Tax Cut. What they want to do is repeal the very important and necessary changes that Republicans voted to put into law. President Trump signed that into law on July 4, triumphantly on Independence Day.

It was a great marquee achievement for lots of reasons, but one of the most, some of the most important provisions in that law was that it eliminated fraud and abuse of our health system. Medicaid has been rife with fraud and abuse, and so we reformed it. Why? To help provide more and better health services for the American people. Because the problem with Medicaid is it’s been abused. We had so many people on Medicaid that never were intended to be there. Medicaid was written for the people who need it most, the elderly, the disabled, sometimes young pregnant women who are in difficult situations, but the resources were being drained. You know why? Because there were two primary categories of people that should never have been there in the first place. One was able-bodied young men who are riding the wagon, who should be working. We got them back to work. And the other thing that we focused on was the illegal aliens. By the CBO’s estimate about 1.4 million illegal aliens were receiving Medicaid benefits that were intended only for US citizens that met the categories I just described. They were gaming the system. They were cheating the system. And what that means is that less resources were available for the people, the Americans who actually needed it most. So we did the commonsense thing, the right thing, the just thing, and we put it in the law. And the President signed that gladly signed it into law. They want to repeal it. They want to give those resources back to illegal aliens. That’s exactly what that highlighted language means on this exhibit.

Number two over here, I feel like I’m back in court exhibit number two. Okay? This is the specifics of what that would mean when we say they want to give $200 billion back to illegal aliens. These are the specifics. If you read the legalese here in the language in the bill, on page 57 and what follows, that’s what it’s talking about. These are all the various provisions in the chart over here. Those are listed in millions. So you can see the final total there, $192.8 billion of your hard-earned taxpayer dollars that Chuck Schumer and the Democrats want to give back to illegal aliens. That’s a fact. And nobody can refute it.

Now, look, what we’ve done is very simple. We sent over a clean continuing resolution. This is standard practice around here, and all the Democrats who are voting against it in the Senate right now, every single one of them have given impassioned speeches about how you must pass continuing resolutions. You must pass CR’s. You should never shut down the government because it’s dangerous and destructive and selfish and wrong. Well, suddenly they’ve changed their tune. We’re playing, I invite you all after the press conference to go by the Speaker’s Office in the hallway there, and you can see the highlight reel of all of them saying this passionately as recently as March of this last year, when Chuck Schumer led his caucus to vote for the same CR. They did it 13 times during the Biden Administration in the previous four years, but suddenly they won’t do it.

So, everybody has to ask themselves why it has nothing to do with health care. The subsidies that they’re saying is not the issue that is an issue for the end of the year. December 31 is when that expires. So, Congress has three months to negotiate that. Certainly, we could work on it in the month of October to find some consensus to figure that out. What reforms there may be necessary to make all that happen. Republicans are committed to the health care of Americans. We have already proven that we are making health care more efficient and effective and more available so that we can bring down cost and premiums and improve quality of care. We put the goods on paper, we’re doing that. And the CBO analysis that came out August 25 said that these changes that we put in our bill are doing exactly that.

Congressional Budget Office is not a Republican shop, as you all know. They typically go against what I’m doing, okay? But they had to admit that this is going to make 2.3 million ineligible recipients no longer on the Medicaid roles. It’s going to save $185 billion for taxpayers. That’s exactly what we promised. And that’s what’s going to be achieved. But we have more reforms coming to try to fix Obamacare, which is not working for the people. But you need commonsense, responsible Republicans who are serious about policy to fix that for the people. And that’s what we’re working to do. The Democrats are stalling that because they need a political talking point. And why? Because Chuck Schumer, who leads the Democrats, is terrified that he’s not going to win back his Senate seat. He’s afraid that the Marxist, far-Left corner of his base is going to challenge him in New York.

Maybe many of you have noticed New York is probably going to elect a Marxist for mayor. He’s terrified by that development. Chuck Schumer is a far-Left progressive politician, but he is not far enough left for this base. And so, he’s got to show a fight against the President. He’s got to show that he’s fighting Republicans, and because they’re playing political games and they’re not doing what he himself said passionately as recently as six months ago, that must be done, that you passed a standard bipartisan CR because he needs political cover. He’s dragging the American people through this and who’s getting hurt? Women, infants, and children nutrition programs that are now stalled. Veterans’ health services that will not be provided. People who are low-income Medicare recipients who receive telehealth and health treatment at home. Many of those programs are not being funded. We have troops and TSA agents and border patrol agents who are working without pay protecting the country. And you have FEMA services, health insurance policies, for example, that are being stalled in the middle of a hurricane season because the Democrats want to play political games and try to obscure the real facts at issue.

We challenge them to tell us why they’re not trying to give illegal aliens health care again when they put it in their own bill. This is not Republicans playing games. I could have put Republican conservative priorities on the CR and sent it over there, but I didn’t. And so, when you all asked me, why aren’t you negotiating with them, I don’t have anything to negotiate. Leader Thune and I can’t take off Republican priorities that we put in the CR and say: “Hey, is that better? Could you vote for that?” because we didn’t put them on there in the first place. Why? Because Republicans are being responsible. We’re operating in good faith, and we’re trying to get the Democrats to do their job, and they won’t. Those are the simple facts, and they cannot be obscured. I’m so grateful for the strong leadership of my colleague and partner over in the Senate.

Wasserman Schultz Hears from Healthcare Professionals on GOP Healthcare Crisis

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23)

“Over 200,000 people right here in my district will face a massive hit to their monthly budget or lose healthcare coverage entirely. Kaiser estimates that premiums will double for our families. Who can possibly afford that?” said Wasserman Schultz. “In the conversations I just had with healthcare leaders in my district, they were very clear that there were thousands and thousands of people in our community that will cease being able to have affordable healthcare.”

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25) heard from healthcare professionals – including hospital CEOs, healthcare workers, and consumer advocates – about how massive Republican Medicaid cuts and the failure to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits would harm local health providers and families in our community.

Following the roundtable discussion, she took questions from press to share the concerns that were relayed to her. Roundtable participants did not join her in talking to press afterward, in part out of fear of political retribution.

In 2024, Florida’s 25th Congressional District had the 6th highest total ACA marketplace enrollees of any congressional district nationwide. Florida districts made up all of the top 10, and 12 of the top 15 in total ACA marketplace enrollees. Florida is also the number one state nationwide in ACA marketplace enrollees (source).

Government funding ran out on September 30th, and Republicans have plunged the nation into a healthcare crisis. Yet GOP leaders refuse to negotiate with Democrats to end a government shutdown and prevent hundreds of thousands of Americans from losing coverage and millions more from seeing costs skyrocket.

FL-25 Impacts if the GOP Healthcare Crisis Continues (sources here and here):

  • 203,000 people in FL-25 will see their healthcare costs rise if Republicans let critical tax credits expire.
  • For a 60-year-old couple earning $82,800 a year, annual premiums will rise by $18,217 or 259%.
  • For a family of four earning $64,000 a year, annual premiums will rise by $2,571 or 182%.
  • For a family of four earning $129,800 a year, annual premiums will rise by $9,839 or 89%.

Back in Maine, Pingree Stresses Local Impact of Republicans’ Failure to Protect Health Care, Keep the Government Open

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (1st District of Maine)

Hours after the federal government shut down, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) condemned Republicans’ refusal to work with Democrats to keep the government open—and stop millions of Americans from falling off a health care cliff. During a press conference at the Portland International Jetport on Wednesday after arriving back home from Washington, Pingree emphasized that the shutdown falls squarely on Republicans.

“No one takes a shutdown lightly. The Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House. When you’re in the majority, you have the ability to keep the government open or shut it down. This is their shutdown,” Pingree said. “Many of our Republican colleagues understand that these [Affordable Care Act] tax credits are just as important to their constituents as they are to ours; that the cuts to Medicaid will be just as devastating to their rural hospitals as ours. So, I’m not sure why they won’t come to the table and negotiate.”

Click here to watch coverage of the Wednesday press conference.

“[Democrats’] goal is to protect everyone’s health care during this fight, to restore the cuts related to health care, and to make sure that Republicans don’t break their promises going into the future,” she said. “I hear from my constituents every day that the cost of living is too high—whether it is housing, child care, or the cost of food—and many of them are looking at these increased premiums and are devastated to try to imagine how they’re going to get that paid for and how they’re going to keep health care for their family.”

On Thursday, Pingree joined Protect Our Care Maine and small business owner Briana Bononcini to highlight the devastating impact of the Republican health care crisis.

At a press conference at Bononcini’s Portland restaurant, Hunt & Alpine Club, Pingree and advocates stressed how inaction from President Trump and Congressional Republicans threatens to strip premium tax credits from thousands of Mainers—and drive health insurance premiums up by as much as 114%.

“The enhanced premium tax credits help more than 50,000 Mainers to afford their health insurance. But many of those who are self-employed—and we have a lot of them: fishermen, farmers, people who work in the woods, people who have their own businesses—depend on this for affordable health care,” Pingree said. “Without these extended tax credits, they will be without coverage, largely because they’ll be priced out of the marketplace and 9,500 Mainers are looking at losing their subsidies altogether.”

Click here to watch the full press conference.

Enhanced premium tax credits have helped make health insurance affordable for 53,808 Mainers enrolled in coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Eliminating them would drive costs out of reach for too many Mainers, forcing them to choose between health care and other basic necessities. Republicans have already broken their promise to bring down costs for everyday Americans by slashing funding for Medicaid in their Big Ugly Bill, and they will continue to drive up costs if they take these tax credits away.

“We took the chance on building the restaurant because we knew we would have health care. This restaurant’s also been able to let us employ over a dozen people through the years and create jobs here in Maine. And being part of the Maine small business economy and community, striking out on your own to start a business, is scary enough. The uncertainty you’ll be able to make a living is almost paralyzing. But then you add the uncertainty of whether or not you have health care—if something catastrophic happens—is a whole other level of concern,” Bononcini said. “[…] I work with and know many Mainers who would be unable to go to school, open new businesses, or care for family without the coverage through the Affordable Care Act. The largest barrier for entrepreneurs is health coverage and good and affordable health coverage for them and their families. Far too many Maine families are worried about raising rates and deductibles, and now not even sure if they’ll be able to afford health coverage.”

If Congress does not extend the enhanced premium tax credits immediately, hundreds of thousands of people will lose their health care and millions more will see their costs skyrocket.

Republicans acted quickly to pass tax cuts for their billionaire buddies by July 4, despite them also expiring December 31 of this year. Americans are already getting notices about skyrocketing costs and deciding now if they can afford to keep their health coverage.

“Everyone will be impacted by this,” Pingree continued. “When you couple it with [the $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid] in the Big Ugly Bill, which will affect MaineCare, it’s going to affect our hospitals and a tremendous number of Mainers.”

Griffith, Craig County Officials Celebrate Progress on Emergency Radio Communications

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA)

After close to one year of work with federal, state and local partners, Craig County recently announced that it secured a Right-of-Way Access Permit for an Emergency Radio Tower site in Craig County. The site is located off of Forest Service Road, known as Hall Road, and belongs to the United States Forest Service.

For many years, Craig County has fought through various barriers and regulations that restricted its ability to provide emergency radio capabilities to its residents and first responders. After being contacted by Craig County Supervisor Jordan Labiosa, U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) worked with relevant Craig County officials, including Craig County Board of Supervisors members, Craig County Administrator Dan Collins and Craig County Emergency Management/Services Coordinator Darryl Humphreys, to help with the application process and acquisition of a Right-of-Way Permit from the United States Forest Service.

“Sufficient access to public safety communications helps local governments and first responder organizations,” said Congressman Griffith. “Craig County has worked diligently to deliver quality emergency radio communications systems, but an issue with the United States Forest Service unnecessarily delayed Craig County’s progress. I commend the Craig County team for their resilience during this process, and I am glad we worked together to find a solution to this issue.”

“We would like to thank Congressman Griffith and his staff for the work and effort to help Craig County in obtaining the needed easement permit from the Forest Service for the Emergency Radio System tower site,” said Administrator Collins and Coordinator Humphreys.  “This will help the citizens of the County and first responders have better radio communications during emergencies.”
