LEADER JEFFRIES ON MS NOW: “TAXPAYER DOLLARS SHOULD BE USED TO MAKE LIFE MORE AFFORDABLE FOR EVERYDAY AMERICANS, NOT BRUTALIZE OR KILL THEM”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District of New York)

Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries appeared on MSNOW’s All In, where he made clear that Democrats will continue demanding reform to Donald Trump’s out-of-control Department of Homeland Security that is unleashing harm on the American people.

ALI VELSHI: House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries joins me now. Leader Jeffries, good to see you. Thank you for being with us tonight.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Great to see you.

ALI VELSHI: Let’s talk about these demands—the masks, the ID, but the racial profiling. As you note in the list of demands, that is in contravention of the Fourth Amendment, although the Supreme Court in its ruling having to do with Los Angeles, did muddy those waters. It’s in contravention of the Fifth Amendment, due process. It’s in contravention of the Fourteenth Amendment, equal protections. This shouldn’t be that hard to get agreement on the fact that these basic things that ICE are doing are wrong and unconstitutional and unlawful.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, that’s exactly right. This shouldn’t be that complicated for my Republican colleagues. Unfortunately, they continue to bend the knee to the Trump administration to try to unleash this extremism and brutality on the American people. Our view here, top line is simple. Taxpayer dollars should be used to make life more affordable for everyday Americans, not brutalize or kill them. We know ICE is out of control and needs to be reined in along with the other related agencies. Immigration enforcement should be fair, should be just and it should be humane. And we’ve got to make sure that there are dramatic changes at DHS and, in the absence of that, there should not be a funding agreement that moves forward.

ALI VELSHI: What kind of leverage do you have on that? Because if that funding agreement doesn’t move forward—this is a DHS specific funding agreement—obviously some employees will work and have to work without pay. DHS overwhelmingly has employees like that who have to stay at work. There’s some FEMA activity there, there’s some TSA activity, there’s Coast Guard. How do you manage that situation if there’s a so-called DHS shutdown?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, we support FEMA, of course. We support TSA, hardworking agents who help keep us safe as we transit from one place to another via airplane. And we, of, course, support the Coast Guard. Now, if we confront a situation where there’s a DHS shutdown, it’s because Republicans will basically have decided that they don’t mind shutting down FEMA or Coast Guard or TSA because they don’t want ICE to be held accountable and they don’t want ICE be forced to conduct themselves like every other law enforcement agency in the country. That’s fundamentally what we’re trying to achieve here so that this type of violence and brutality and assault and extremism that we’ve seen is not unleashed on American citizens, on law-abiding immigrant families and on the American people.

ALI VELSHI: You have, at the moment, your Republican colleagues have a three-vote lead in Congress. Right now, polls are closed in New Jersey, in the House primary special election. Tom Malinowski seems to be in the lead at the moment. But the bottom line is that election is going to be on April 16th. It’ll most likely be won by a Democrat. At that point, you’ve got a three-vote lead from Republicans. Talk to me about this. There’ve been a lot of elections around the country where Democrats have won by much larger margins than they won in November. Tell me how you use that to motivate your Republican friends.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, listen. Republicans have been losing races up and down the ballot across the country since January of 2025. In fact, you can’t point to a meaningful race that Democrats have lost. Of course, in the off-year election in November of 2025, we won all across the country in New Jersey, in New York, in Virginia, in Georgia, in Pennsylvania, in Mississippi, of course, in California Prop 50. We then won the Mayor’s race in Miami in December, for the first time in 30 years a Democrat. Now we’ve been leaning into the issues that we know matter to the American people—driving down the high cost of living where Republicans have failed, fixing our broken healthcare system. We know Republicans have brought us a healthcare crisis that is devastating the American people. And we’ll continue to point out as Democrats that Republicans can either stand on the side of the American people and uplift our values and our way of life, or continue to be reckless rubber stamps for Donald Trump’s extreme agenda. And if they continue to do the latter, they’re going to lose. And hopefully, you’ll have a handful of enlightened Republicans decide that they better stop functioning in a cult-like fashion and start functioning like they’re part of a separate and co-equal branch of government, not a wholly owned subsidiary of the Trump cartel.

ALI VELSHI: And we started to see some of that on some bills, right? We started to, obviously, with the Epstein Act, we saw it. But in other places where some Republicans have been pretty open about going over and voting with Democrats. Can you whittle away enough of that before the next election in a way that causes Republicans to say, hey, we have to stop this. We are not only going to lose our majority in November, most likely, but we may lose it effectively because enough Republicans will defect.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, that’s right. We only need a handful of Republicans, for instance, to join us in our efforts to bring about dramatic change with respect to DHS and the way in which ICE agents are conducting themselves on American streets all across the country. And we have been successful in pushing discharge petitions where we’re forcing votes on the House floor and Republicans are joining us. That was the case on the Epstein files. That was the case where 20 Republicans joined Democrats in the latter part of last year when we overrode in the House a Trump executive order that ripped away collective bargaining rights from more than a million hardworking federal employees. And as you know, in the beginning of this year, we were successful in passing a three-year extension in the House of the Affordable Care Act tax credits to prevent tens of millions of Americans from experiencing dramatically increased health insurance premiums, copays and deductibles. Every single Democrat, at the time 213 of us, were joined by 17 Republicans in getting that done. And so we’ll continue to press our case. We have them on the run, and we’re not going to let our foot off the gas pedal.

ALI VELSHI: Let’s talk about the Epstein stuff. The Clintons have agreed to testify in the House, and Hillary Clinton is saying, ‘Let’s make it public. Let’s just put it all out there.’ How will that affect your decisions if you become the Speaker of the House? If a former President has been asked to testify before the House, does that mean that you ask Donald Trump to do the same?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, listen. Certainly Donald Trump likes to conduct himself as if he should be held to a standard different than every other American President or former President. And we can’t allow that to happen, on all of the things. And certainly it’s going to be the case that in a Democratic majority, we’re going to fight hard to tackle the issues that matter, to drive down the high cost of living, fight hard to fix our broken healthcare system, of course, but also at the same period of time, we’ve got to clean up the corruption that exists in Washington, DC, in the Congress, with the Supreme Court and also deal with Donald Trump and his administration, who spend all of their time, it seems like, trying to enrich themselves, their family and their friends, as opposed to focusing on doing their job to make life better for the American people. We will hold the Trump administration accountable in a manner consistent with what the House should be all about, a check and balance on an out-of-control administration.

ALI VELSHI: What do you think of the business about nationalizing elections? Every day, Donald Trump sort of says it differently and then some Republicans say they don’t like it and the White House walks it back. But he is talking about, not actually, not changing our entire election system, just changing in some places. He mentioned Detroit, Philadelphia and Atlanta. I wonder what they all have in common. It’s dangerous talk. One can laugh about it but it’s really dangerous talk.

LEADER JEFFRIES: It’s dangerous talk. It unsettles the American people, and it should. Listen, Donald Trump understands that if there is a free and fair election in November, and we’re going to make sure there is one, that the House is lost. Democrats are going to take back control of the House of Representatives. And the Senate is looking increasingly shaky as well because the American people are rejecting this extremism. Donald Trump and Republicans have failed. They failed on the economy. They failed on healthcare. They’re failing on immigration enforcement. They failed to address the challenges of the American people and certainly address them in a way that is consistent with who we are as we celebrate our 250th birthday. And so we have adopted an all-hands-on-deck approach in terms of making sure that it’s the American people who are the ones who decide who controls Congress in the aftermath of the November midterm elections, not Donald Trump and his extreme sycophants.

ALI VELSHI: Congressman, good to see you. Thank you for taking time for us tonight.

Congressman Al Green Issues Statement on Press Conference Addressing Filing an Injunction to Halt ICE Racial Profiling Across the Greater Houston Area

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Al Green (TX-9)

(Houston, TX) —On Friday, February 6, 2026, Congressman Al Green released the following press statement regarding a press conference at the Harris County Democratic Party Headquarters at 11:00 a.m. CT, with community leaders and local elected officials. This press conference will address ongoing racial profiling by ICE across the Greater Houston area and announce the filing of a lawsuit seeking an injunction to halt these unlawful practices.

Congressman Al Green stated, “I intend to file an amicus brief in support of this lawsuit. I stand with the Latino community in firm opposition to the inhumane and unconstitutional actions carried out by DHS/ICE agents under the leadership of Secretary Kristi Noem. Her policies have fueled racial profiling, unlawful detention, and violence against American citizens and immigrant communities, particularly in Houston, home to one of the largest Latino populations in the nation, many of whom are my constituents. The fear that Noem and her army have spread must stop today. What we are witnessing today mirrors the painful history of how Black Americans have long been targeted and criminalized in this country, and we must remember an injury to one is an injury to all.  We must stand together to stop the infringement on our constitutional rights, racial profiling, arbitrary detentions and abuse of power. I know firsthand how dangerous these practices can become when government power is abused. Secretary Noem must be held accountable, whether through resignation, removal, or impeachment, and these civil rights violations must end now.”

Reps. Gomez, Torres Inspect DTLA ICE Facility Amid Reports of Previously Unknown Holding Area

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34)

LOS ANGELES, CA – Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) and Congresswoman Norma Torres (CA-35) conducted a congressional oversight visit of the federal immigration detention facility inside the Roybal Federal Building in Downtown Los Angeles. The visit followed reports that families and children may be held in an area of the facility known as B-17, which has not previously been part of congressional oversight inspections. Reps. Gomez and Torres conducted a full review of the space.

“I went to the Downtown LA detention facility today to conduct lawful oversight after Kristi Noem tried to block Members of Congress from doing our job,” said Rep. Gomez. “When families are being detained, Members of Congress cannot be locked out. That’s why I’ll keep showing up to demand transparency and accountability, and to stop the Trump administration from hiding conditions inside these facilities.”

During the visit, Reps. Gomez and Torres inspected the previously unknown holding area, B-17, which was roughly the size of an office waiting room. No families or children were present at the time of the inspection, though facility staff told Members that a family had been moved out of B-17 the day before. The area contained no beds, blankets, or cribs, even though the Members observed signage suggesting prior use by families, including a posted notice reading, “Please ensure your children are under your care at all times.”

Ahead of the inspection, advocates informed Rep. Gomez’s office that a woman who was eight months pregnant had been taken into custody by immigration enforcement. Rep. Gomez arrived carrying a backpack containing the woman’s sweater and prenatal medication in hopes of delivering them to her, but facility officials told Members of Congress that she was not inside the building. Rep. Gomez’s office is actively working to learn more about her status and whereabouts.

The visit follows a recent federal court ruling blocking the Department of Homeland Security from enforcing a policy requiring Members of Congress to provide seven days advance notice before visiting immigration detention facilities. Rep. Gomez is a plaintiff in the lawsuit challenging that policy and has previously been denied access to this facility while attempting to carry out congressional oversight.

Rep. Gomez’s office will continue pressing DHS for answers about how B-17 is being used, the conditions inside the space, and whether families, children, or pregnant individuals are being held there.

Rep. Gomez Granted Emergency Relief in Lawsuit to Uphold Congressional Oversight of Federal Immigration Detention Facilities

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34), along with 12 other plaintiffs, were  granted emergency relief in his lawsuit to uphold congressional oversight at federal immigration detention facilities. A federal court ordered the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to temporarily restore Members’ right to unannounced congressional oversight of federal detention facilities.

Under federal law, Members of Congress have the right to conduct unannounced oversight of DHS facilities used for immigration detention, including facilities run by ICE and those operated by private companies. However in January, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem secretly imposed a policy requiring that Members of Congress provide seven days’ notice before being granted access to federal immigration detention facilities.

In July 2025, Rep. Gomez sued the Trump Administration after it unlawfully denied him from a federal detention facility in Downtown Los Angeles.

Additional Members of Congress who were recently denied access to federal immigration detention facilities joined Gomez as plaintiffs in the lawsuit: Representatives Joe Neguse (D-CO-02), Jamie Raskin (D-MD-08), Bennie Thompson (D-MS-02), Veronica Escobar (D-TX-16), Dan Goldman (D-NY-10), Adriano Espaillat (D-NY-13), Jimmy Gomez (D-CA-34), Norma Torres (D-CA-35), Raul Ruiz (D-CA-36), Robert Garcia (D-CA-42), Lou Correa (D-CA-46), and Kelly Morrison (MN-03).

Rep. Aguilar Delivers Over $1 Million to Strengthen AI Technology and Workforce at California State University, San Bernardino

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Pete Aguilar (31 CD Ca)

The grant funding will allow CSUSB to strengthen its AI technology and workforce by upgrading its existing facility, purchasing advanced technology, creating an online portal for AI and VR training and expanding community outreach and events

Today, Rep. Pete Aguilar (CA-33) announced that he secured $1,031,000 in community project funding for CSUSB’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) Research and Retraining Center, which provides students with opportunities for training with AI and VR technology. This grant funding will expand the Inland Empire’s AI and VR capabilities, strengthening the region’s cybersecurity, supply chain and logistics workforce. You can watch the full video of the press conference here and find photos from the event above and here.
“When I’m in Washington, I’m always working on ways to bring home federal dollars that help empower students, create jobs, and make life better for people in the Inland Empire,” said Rep. Pete Aguilar. “That’s why I am so proud to deliver $1 million in community project funding for CSUSB’s Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality Research and Retraining Center to help prepare our next generation for the new age of technology. This grant funding will strengthen our region’s technology and workforce by providing CSUSB students with opportunities for training in AI and VR technology. This is just the beginning. I’ll continue to fight for more funding to ensure our students in San Bernardino have the opportunities to succeed and build their lives right here in the Inland Empire.”
“We are deeply grateful to Congressman Pete Aguilar for his leadership and steadfast support of Cal State San Bernardino and the Inland Empire,” said Tomás D. Morales, President, California State University, San Bernardino. “This funding accelerates CSUSB’s leadership in AI and virtual reality research while expanding workforce development opportunities that directly benefit the Inland Empire’s growing technology and logistics sectors.”
“It was about a decade ago that I met Congressman Aguilar, and I had the opportunity to describe what we were trying to do in the Center for Cybersecurity on a local and national scale,” said Dr. Tony Coulson, Executive Director, Center for Cyber and AI, California State University, San Bernardino. “A lot of complexity there, a lot of different things. And he responded very plainly with me: ‘How can I help?’ That was it. How can I help? And what is amazing, having I’ve been around for a number of years, a lot of people say, ‘How can I help?’ and there’s not necessarily a big follow-up with that. But that’s not the case here. Rep. Pete Aguilar has done a lot in the area of cybersecurity workforce, and for our community, that cannot be understated.”
“AI is changing everything, everywhere, all at once,” said Dr. Vincent Nestler, Director, Center for Cyber and AI, California State University, San Bernardino. “Some people are going to make out like bandits, and some people are going to find themselves lost and confused. The purpose, really, of this grant is to try and figure out, what is that transition? What’s on the horizon that’s coming our way? How do we prepare the Inland Empire for that transition? If warehousing jobs go, where do those people go to work now? How do we transition them to make them successful Our effort is going to be to maximize this money with other things that we are ready to do, and to try and make sure that we’re that shining city on the hill that helps folks have a place to go to say, okay, what do I do now? I am grateful that we have a wonderful champion in the federal government like Rep. Aguilar who helps us continue to be successful and to launch people into the future.”
In January 2026, Rep. Aguilar helped pass the Commerce, Justice, Science, Energy and Water Development, and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act of 2026, which included $7.4 million in federal community project funding grants for seven projects in California’s 33rd Congressional District.

Scalise: House to Vote on SAVE America Act Next Week

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steve Scalise (1st District of Louisiana)

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) appeared on Fox Business Network’s Kudlow to discuss the SAVE America Act, which will require voters to provide photo ID to vote and proof of citizenship to register to vote.

Click here or the image above to view Leader Scalise’s full interview.
Highlights from Leader Scalise’s interview: On Democrats opposing common-sense measures to secure elections:“Look, I’ve worked closely with President Trump, with Chip Roy, a lot of other members that really care about this, frankly, most Americans. Look at the polling – in every demographic group, this polls over 70% because Americans recognize the sanctity of the vote is at risk. When you have either illegals voting because states don’t check, a number of states deliberately don’t want to check whether or not somebody’s here legally when they register, and then they mandate in some states that they can’t show picture ID. That’s a recipe for voter fraud, Larry. We need to fix it. We need to ensure that everybody’s vote is protected because one person, one vote only matters if you’re having these protections like the SAVE America Act.“Ask [Democrats] why they required [IDs] at their own Democrat National Convention. Why is it when you want to get on an airplane, Larry, nobody questions when you want to get on an airplane, you’ve got to show ID. Do they call that racist? Of course not. It’s common sense. And by the way, Black Americans, Hispanic Americans, every group you look at, including Democrats, say that this makes sense. It’s only Democrat politicians, especially in Washington, that are scared to death of this. What does that tell you, Larry? Is it that they are afraid that if you actually ensure that only people who are who they say they are can vote, what does that do to their business model as a party? Do they really need voter fraud in order for their politicians to get elected? I think this is going to expose a lot of things when you see this vote, Larry.”On President Trump’s support for the SAVE America Act:“Yes, it’s going to come up next week. You’re going to see it next week. We got President Trump delivering a State of the Union. But before that, we’re going to have a vote on the House floor on Chip Roy’s SAVE America Act. Look, President Trump named it. I was in the Oval Office with him about a week and a half ago when we were putting a bunch of these bills together. And this one, especially, he’s passionate about because he’s seen these problems.”

Brownley Joins Warren, Alsobrooks, and over 55 Lawmakers in Pressing HHS on Health Impacts of Violent ICE Raids, Arrests on Children

Source: United States House of Representatives – Julia Brownley (D-CA)

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA-26) joined U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD), along with over 55 congressional colleagues in pressing Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on the impact of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency escalating violence in American communities on children. From detaining children to arresting parents, ICE’s actions are leaving children with potentially lasting physical and psychological trauma.

“ICE and CBP operations that treat children like collateral damage threaten their physical and mental health and wellbeing… This disregard for child welfare undermines the government’s core child-protection obligations,” wrote the lawmakers. “Yet your agency does not appear to be taking any action to speak out against or investigate the impacts of the Trump Administration’s immigration agenda on children.”

Under the Trump administration, children — both U.S. citizens and noncitizens — have been exposed to increasingly violent and intense immigration enforcement operations. After Donald Trump rescinded ICE’s sensitive locations policy on Day One, ICE has carried out raids at schools, day care centers — and even a child’s birthday party. ICE has also become more violent, employing military-style techniques in communities across the country. Even when children are not the direct target, their exposure to this violence can create lasting trauma.

“[ICE and CBP’s] practices have triggered national outrage and risk traumatizing children and depriving them of access to education and basic services, with lasting consequences for their behavioral, physical, academic, and emotional wellbeing,” wrote the lawmakers.

Five-year-old Minnesota resident Liam Ramos was detained for more than a week in a Texas facility after reportedly being used as “bait” to capture his father. Liam’s father said Liam was not eating well and was sleeping a lot and asking about his mother and classmates.

In Massachusetts, a man suffered an apparent seizure while ICE agents attempted to detain his wife as their toddler cried within arm’s reach. Witnesses allege agents pushed him, struck him, and pressed on his neck while the child remained trapped between the adults.

In Illinois, ICE agents forcibly detained a day care teacher in front of her students.  In another incident, masked agents deployed tear gas near an elementary school in Chicago, sending children running and teachers scrambling for cover. In Texas, ICE agents stormed a five-year-old child’s birthday party, where state and federal officers conducted an operation that resulted in the apprehension of 47 people, including nine minors — one of whom was just three years old.

“Children’s exposure to traumatic ICE raids occurring in their communities across America can have lasting effects on their long-term health and development, including their behavioral and psychological wellbeing,” wrote the lawmakers.

ICE operations are also hurting children’s academic and social development. In districts where ICE raids have occurred, schools are reporting declining student attendance and performance; in some schools, nearly half of students have been absent following school-based ICE raids. Early childhood providers have reported attrition from day care, after-school programs, and other community programs that typically serve as spaces for positive socialization, mental health counseling, and other forms of support.

Immigration enforcement actions are also impacting children’s access to health care. Most health care workers report significant or moderate decreases in patient visits since January 2025; for the children that do continue to visit the doctor, they reportedly have declining physical and mental health. One doctor observed “abnormal weight gain trajectories” in children not getting exercise outdoors due to “fear of encountering ICE,” and another pediatrician reported that “minors [are] constantly crying during their well-child checks expressing their fear for themselves and their families.”

“Given HHS’s responsibility for the health and wellbeing of children in the United States, we request any data your department has collected regarding the impact of immigration operations on children’s health and development,” wrote the lawmakers.

The lawmakers noted HHS’s various programs, offices, and agencies that research and provide for children’s physical and mental health and wellbeing, and requested that Secretary Kennedy share any information HHS has regarding the impact of ICE and CBP operations on children’s mental health and development.

Our Innovation Lab can serve as a catalyst for a new model of training programs. This is a big moment for Hope through Housing and the Inland Empire.”
In January 2026, Rep. Aguilar helped pass the Commerce, Justice, Science, Energy and Water Development, and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act of 2026, which included $7.4 million in federal community project funding grants for seven projects in California’s 33rd Congressional District.

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, Congress’ Lone Ph.D. Physicist, Issues Statement on Expiration of New START Treaty

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Bill Foster (11th District of Illinois)

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement:

“Today, the last remaining limits on the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals disappear, and the world is now more vulnerable to nuclear escalation than at any point in the last fifteen years.

“Historically, agreements like New START were supported by Democratic and Republican administrations alike because they made the United States safer. Today, that system has frayed. We have a president who pays lip service to the existential risk of nuclear weapons, but hasn’t taken the necessary steps to reduce that risk. His Truth Social post from today at least signals an openness to strong and enduring arms control agreements; whether his administration follows through remains to be seen.

“Anyone who remembers past arms control negotiations understands the gravity of this moment. Putin’s Russia has repeatedly shown that it views nuclear weapons not simply as a deterrent of last resort, but also as a tool of political blackmail. As Congress’ Ph.D. physicist, I’ve been sounding the alarm on this issue for years and remain deeply engaged in working across the aisle to decrease nuclear risk. I am calling on both nations to abide by the numerical limits set under New START until a new agreement is signed.”

Congressman Foster leads 27 colleagues in the House on H.Res.100, condemning Russia’s suspension of its participation in New START and calling on the administration to pursue arms control talks with Russia and China. Last month, Congressman Foster hosted a Special Order Hour on the expiration of the New START Treaty, which can be found here

Before he became a Member of Congress, Foster worked as a high-energy physicist and particle accelerator designer at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). He was a member of the team that discovered the top quark, the heaviest known form of matter. He also led the teams that designed and built several scientific facilities and detectors still in use today, including the Antiproton Recycler Ring, the latest of Fermilab’s giant particle accelerators.
