Congressman Krishnamoorthi Demands Answers After HHS Cuts Pediatric Health Grants Following Criticism of RFK Jr. by the American Academy of Pediatrics

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (8th District of Illinois)

WASHINGTON — Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) sent a letter to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. expressing grave concern over the Department’s decision to terminate more than $18 million in federal grants awarded to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), warning that the move threatens critical child health initiatives nationwide and raises serious questions about political retaliation and the integrity of federal public health funding. In the letter, Congressman Krishnamoorthi emphasized that the AAP, headquartered in Itasca, Illinois, represents more than 67,000 pediatricians nationwide and has served for nearly a century as a cornerstone of evidence-based pediatric care and public health:

The terminated grants supported programs aimed at reducing sudden infant death, improving adolescent health outcomes, preventing fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, and ensuring early identification of autism. The Department has stated that these initiatives “no longer align with the Department’s mission or priorities,” a justification Congressman Krishnamoorthi sharply questioned.

“I find it profoundly disturbing that preventing infant deaths, protecting adolescent health, and identifying developmental disabilities early are now considered misaligned with the mission of the federal agency charged with safeguarding public health,” Congressman Krishnamoorthi wrote in his letter. “The funding cancellations came shortly after the AAP challenged Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s vaccine policies in federal court, raising serious concerns that this action may represent retaliation against a respected medical organization for exercising its legal rights and defending science-based public health policy.”

The letter raises particular concern about the timing of the cancellations, noting that the funding terminations occurred shortly after the AAP challenged Secretary Kennedy’s vaccine policies in federal court. Emphasizing the responsibilities of HHS and its subagencies, including the CDC and HRSA, the letter underscores that public health funding decisions must be guided by science rather than ideology.

To better understand how the Department is making grant funding decisions, Congressman Krishnamoorthi requested that HHS provide responses to the following questions by January 20, 2026:

  1. All documents and communications related to the decision to cancel $18.6 million in grants to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
  2. An outline of projects and initiatives that will be funded to replace work that AAP was performing in relation to sudden infant deaths, adolescent health, fetal alcohol syndrome prevention, and early autism detection.
  3. HHS, CDC, and HRSA’s banned words and ideologies when considering projects for federal funding.
  4. A list of all HHS, CDC, and HRSA projects that have been cancelled because they “no longer align with the Department’s mission or priorities.”

Congressman Krishnamoorthi Urges Education Department to Reverse Cuts to Illinois Community Schools

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (8th District of Illinois)

WASHINGTON — Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) today called on the Department of Education to reverse its decision to cancel Full-Service Community Schools (FSCS) grants across Illinois, warning that the move would eliminate critical student supports and undermine years of federal investment. In a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon, Congressman Krishnamoorthi raised concerns about the cancellation of $18.5 million in annual funding and more than $55 million over the remaining grant period for FSCS programs statewide.

“In Illinois, FSCS grants support 16 school districts and 32 schools across Illinois, serving approximately 19,000 students annually,” Congressman Krishnamoorthi wrote in the letter. “These grant programs serve rural, suburban, and urban students alike, partnering with schools and families to ensure programs are responsive to the unique needs of each community. They provide essential family engagement, nutrition programs, academic enrichment, mental health supports, and workforce-aligned partnerships. FSCS grants are lifelines for the children and families who rely on them, ensuring that our kids remain safe and supported as they learn.”

Congressman Krishnamoorthi warned that the tens of millions of dollars in funding cuts would have immediate and severe consequences. When students return from winter break this January, they will face dramatically reduced support, undoing years of federal investment in future generations. The congressman accused the Trump administration of politicizing children’s programs and education.

Colorado Reps. Neguse & Hurd and Senators Bennet & Hickenlooper Mobilize Bipartisan, Bicameral Coalition to Protect NCAR

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Joe Neguse (D-Co 2)

“Funding for NCAR is essential to maintaining America’s leadership in global weather forecasting and to protecting our economy, our communities, and the everyday livelihoods of families across the nation.”

Washington, D.C. — Today, Colorado Representatives Joe Neguse (D-CO) and Jeff Hurd (R-CO) and Michael Bennet (D-CO) and John Hickenlooper (D-CO) led a bipartisan, bicameral coalition in support of sustained funding for the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder. In a letter to congressional appropriators, 76 lawmakers from across both chambers requested statutory language be included in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies funding bill to prevent its dismantling and ensure NCAR can maintain its core capabilities and continue delivering vital Earth system science.

The Colorado members mobilized in response to a social media “announcement” from White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought stating the administration plans to dismantle the nation’s leading climate research center.

Neguse, Bennet, Hickenlooper, Hurd, and their colleagues, however, noted that President Trump’s own FY 2026 budget request for the National Science Foundation (NSF), submitted to Congress earlier this year, described NCAR as a “world-class research center” leading advancements in “cutting-edge airborne and ground-based observational facilities[,] community weather and climate models with thousands of users worldwide[,] and petascale high-performance computing.”

As the appropriations process moves to conference in January next year, this letter doubles-down on demands made by Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper last week.

“The work being done at NCAR is vital to our state, our country, and our planet. The breathtaking advancements these scientists and researchers are making every day play a critical role in alerting communities to extreme weather conditions and the advanced modeling systems they are creating are vital to our national security. Any attempt to dismantle this institution is dangerous, reckless, and would, ultimately, put the United States at a very deep competitive disadvantage,” said Congressman Joe Neguse. “I’m grateful to Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper for taking critical action last week to stand up for NCAR’s continued funding, and I’m proud to work with my Republican colleague from the Western Slope, Jeff Hurd, to carry the baton in the House. As Coloradans, first and foremost, we intend to fight back against attempts to gut this cutting-edge institution”

“NCAR does critical work in Colorado that helps predict severe weather and keeps America competitive in climate science. The research happening there protects communities and supports our national security. Dismantling this institution doesn’t make sense, and I’m glad to work with my colleagues in both chambers to make sure NCAR has the funding it needs to keep operating,” said Congressman Jeff Hurd. “The scientists at NCAR are doing work that matters – work that helps families prepare for storms, helps farmers plan their seasons, and keeps us ahead on the world stage. Supporting NCAR is a smart investment we should continue to make, not walk away from. I’m grateful to my House colleague, Joe Neguse, for his partnership in protecting an institution that matters to Colorado and the country.”

“Last week, I blocked the Senate appropriations process to demand full funding for NCAR in response to President Trump’s threat to dismantle it,” said Senator Bennet. “NCAR’s work is indispensable for communities, decision-makers, and emergency responders. From predicting extreme weather conditions to supporting disaster preparedness to understanding how wildfires spread, the elimination of NCAR would be catastrophic for public safety and national security. I am grateful to Representatives Neguse and Hurd for their partnership on the effort to protect NCAR. We will explore every avenue to ensure we don’t lose this vital institution.”

“Donald Trump’s vengeful plan to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research is not only illegal, it’s indefensible. It will have devastating consequences not only for Colorado, but across the country. Colorado won’t be intimidated by the bully in the White House. We will continue to use every tool at our disposal to fight back,” said Senator Hickenlooper.

Rep. Neguse and Colleagues Introduce Bill To Reverse Gun Silencer Giveaway

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Joe Neguse (D-Co 2)

Washington, D.C. — Today, Colorado Congressman Joe Neguse (D-CO) joined Senators Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), as well as, Representative Maxwell Frost (D-FL), to introduce the Medicare Investment and Gun Violence Prevention Act, which would repeal Republican tax breaks for silencers and sawed-off shotguns included in the “One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB),” and repurpose the funding to Medicare — which would equal $1.7 billion over the next decade.

Earlier this year, Neguse and his colleagues on the House Rules Committee exposed Republicans’ last-minute move to eliminate firearm silencer regulations during the panel’s marathon 21-hour hearing on the OBBB. After it was ultimately included in the House-passed bill, the Congressman led a letter to Senate leaders urging the Chamber to commit to remove the language in question.

The deregulation of firearm silencers was since removed from the legislation, however, the removal of excise taxes remained.

“This summer, Republicans passed a provision in the dead-of-night that eliminated excise taxes on firearm silencers. This change is devastating to public safety and greatly impedes law enforcement efforts to keep our communities safe,” said Congressman Neguse. “Today, alongside my colleagues Senator Alsobrooks and Representative Frost, we’ve introduced a simple bill that reverses this policy and reinforces the long-maintained regulations for firearm silencers under the NFA – because the American people and our law enforcement deserve better.”

“This legislation is a 2-for-1 response to Republicans driving up health care costs and letting guns invade our communities. When Republicans snuck in tax cuts to the Big Ugly Bill on gun silencers and short-barreled rifles, they made their position clear: guns matter more than Americans’ lives. At a time when health care costs are skyrocketing, and just days after yet another tragic school shooting, now is the time to act. Our bill will repeal the unnecessary tax cuts on deadly weapons and use the money saved for Americans’ health care, which has been decimated by Republicans,” said Senator Alsobrooks.

“While an endless cycle of gun violence continues to tear apart communities across our nation, Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are gutting Americans’ health care to pay for handouts for their billionaire buddies, including the gun industry. With this legislation, we’re reversing a reckless gun industry tax giveaway and redirecting that funding towards strengthening Medicare and protecting public health,” said Senator Van Hollen.

“In a bill that was chock full of right-wing handouts, the tax break Republicans created for sawed-off shotguns and silencers might be the most ridiculous. Repealing it and plowing that money back into health care is a no brainer,” Senator Wyden said.

“Trump’s so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” doesn’t just slash life-saving programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and Medicare—it also makes our communities less safe by subsidizing silencers and sawed-off shotguns, weapons that make mass shootings deadlier and harder to stop. At a time when our country has seen more mass shootings than days in the year, and as seniors and families face rising health care costs, this legislation reverses these tax cuts and puts people’s health, safety, and well-being above the profits of the gun industry,” said Congressman Frost.

“This bill reverses a dangerous giveaway to the gun industry by restoring long-standing National Firearms Act taxes on silencers and sawed-off shotguns—safeguards that have been in place since the NFA was enacted in 1934,” said Po Murray, Chairwoman of Newtown Action Alliance. “The so-called ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ erased these common-sense taxes, making the most dangerous weapons cheaper and easier to access. Senators Alsobrooks and Wyden are correcting that mistake by restoring the taxes and redirecting $1.7 billion to Medicare, prioritizing public safety and health care over special interests. Newtown Action Alliance implores Congress to urgently pass this legislation.”

“For nearly a century, this nation has sensibly and specially regulated silencers and certain firearms because they pose a severe threat to public safety if placed in the wrong hands. Trump’s One Big Ugly Bill gave the gun industry a tax break on NFA weapons, including silencers, that allows them to categorically put profits over people’s lives and while also forcing massive cuts to Medicaid and Medicare – further endangering survivors of gun violence and all others who rely on these programs. Brady thanks Senators Alsobrooks and Wyden for their leadership in introducing this legislation to repeal this dangerous tax cut for the gun industry and help ensure access to medical care for survivors of gun violence,” said Mark Collins, Federal Policy Director, Brady.

MATSUI, TOKUDA, OBERNOLTE, HURD LEAD BIPARTISAN EFFORT TO IMPROVE STAFFING, PREVENT CUTS AT NATIONAL PARK SERVICE

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA)

WASHINGTON, D.C. Congresswomen Doris Matsui (D-CA-07) and Jill Tokuda (D-HI-02) and Congressmen Jay Obernolte (R-CA-23) and Jeff Hurd (R-CO-03) led a group of 28 total lawmakers in sending a letter to Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum urging him to address insufficient staffing levels and refrain from additional employee reductions at National Parks across the country, citing the impact of staffing shortages on park visitors and the economies of neighboring “gateway” communities.

Since January 2025, the National Park Service (NPS) has fired or lost more than 24 percent of its staff, creating significant challenges at National Parks including decreased capacity for emergency response and disruptions to visitor services, infrastructure maintenance, and conservation work.

“[A]t Yosemite National Park, staffing cuts combined with record-setting visitation from January to July led to a 40% increase in search and rescue efforts compared to the same period last year. At Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Montrose, Colorado, the South Rim Fire burned campsites, maintenance vehicles, and other infrastructure, which, when taken along with a one-third reduction in workforce, will impact the local economy as well as park operations such as fire remediation and safety,” wrote the lawmakers. “Furthermore, at Joshua Tree National Park, staffing shortages have reduced fee-booth coverage and eliminated evening shifts, limiting visitor safety information, cutting needed fee revenue, and increasing the likelihood of congestion and search-and-rescue incidents. And at Haleakalā National Park, staffing shortages are delaying critical conservation work and backcountry maintenance, limiting both visitor access and protection of endangered species.”

“We recognize the importance of efficiency within the federal government. However, reducing National Park Service staff, including positions in supporting offices across DOI, would only intensify the operational challenges parks already face,” the lawmakers continued. “We respectfully encourage you to work directly with NPS career professionals, including regional directors, associate directors, and Senior Executive Service staff, to identify practical solutions to staffing constraints.”

Recent court filings detail the Interior Department’s plans for further staffing cuts, including reducing an additional 272 positions at NPS in the coming months. The letter also calls on Secretary Burgum to work with Congress to address staffing needs.

The bipartisan letter is also signed by Reps. Don Beyer (D-VA-08), Dan Newhouse (R-WA-04), Emily Randall (D-WA-06), Young Kim (R-CA-40), Gabe Amo (D-RI-01), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-08), Maxine Dexter (D-OR-03), Maria Salazar (R-FL-27), Mike Quigley (D-IL-05), Mike Lawler (R-NY-17), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA-07), Jack Bergman (R-MI-01), Jared Huffman (D-CA-02), Amata Coleman Radewagen (R-AS-AL), Maggie Goodlander (D-NH-02), David Valadao (R-CA-21), Seth Magaziner (D-RI-02), Kevin Kiley (R-CA-03), Joe Neguse (D-CO-02), James Moylan (R-GU-AL), Becca Balint (D-VT-AL), Andrew Garbarino (R-NY-02), Kim Schrier (D-WA-08) and Doug LaMalfa (R-CA-01).

House Foreign Affairs Ranking Member Meeks and Warren Invoke Power Under Statute to Require Trump Administration Turn Over Information on Its Decision to Greenlight the Sale of H200 Chips to China

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Gregory W Meeks (5th District of New York)

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY-05), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, sent a letter to Jeffrey Kessler, the Under Secretary for Industry and Security at the Department of Commerce, demanding that the Department of Commerce turn over information required by statute regarding the Administration’s intention to approve the sale of advanced AI chips to China despite the significant military application potential of this technology.

The lawmakers made the request pursuant to the Export Control Reform Act of 2018 (ECRA). Under ECRA, the Department of Commerce must provide any information obtained in administering the Export Administration Regulations upon the request of the chairman or ranking minority member of the appropriate committee or subcommittee. This includes license applications, as well as license approvals, conditions, and supporting evidence that provide the basis for a licensing decision.

Ranking Members Meeks and Warren underscored that the requested information is essential given the significant national security implications of allowing the sale of advanced chips to China. “In ECRA, Congress stated the policy of the United States is ‘to restrict the export of items which would make a significant contribution to the military potential of any other country,’” wrote the Democratic lawmakers. “Approving licenses for items like NVIDIA’s H200 chips, which the Justice Department recently described as ‘integral to modern military applications,’ would be deeply at odds with the policy that Congress articulated in ECRA.”

The lawmakers continued: “The President directing you to approve licenses of the H200 falls within a deeply concerning pattern that undercuts our nation’s security. Just last month, you approved the export of tens of thousands of advanced AI chips, worth an estimated $1 billion, to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, despite significant concerns about these countries’ human rights records and their close relationships with the PRC.”

The lawmakers request information on the Administration’s decision to allow the export of H200s to China be provided to Congress by January 12, 2026. The lawmakers also called for Under Secretary Kessler to provide a briefing before the lawmakers’ committees before any H200 license is approved for export.

Lofgren Slams RFK Jr. for Disgraceful Plan to Fund Unethical Research on Infants in Guinea-Bissau

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose)

WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, it came to light that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) plans to provide funding for a group with proven ties to the U.S. anti-vaccine movement to conduct research on the Hepatitis B vaccine, using infants in Guinea-Bissau as its test subjects. This study comes after the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which now includes several vaccine skeptics, eliminated long-standing recommendations for Hepatitis B vaccines for newborns. The CDC intends to fund a five-year, randomized controlled trial in Guinea-Bissau of the hepatitis B vaccine — giving some infants the vaccine at birth and others the vaccine at 6 weeks of age. The study is considered highly unethical because it withholds a proven, life-saving vaccine from newborn babies with the goal of promoting Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s anti-vaccine agenda.

“This is a new low for the Trump administration,” said Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren. “I am absolutely disgusted. To withhold a lifesaving vaccine from babies across the globe to promote your anti vaccine agenda at home is deplorable. How has it come to this? RFK Jr. must be stopped.”

Congressman Harris Applauds $168 Million Rural Health Transformation Investment for Maryland

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01), Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, and Food and Drug Administration, applauded the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for awarding Maryland $168,180,838 under the Rural Health Transformation Program, which will expand access to care, strengthen the healthcare workforce, and modernize rural health infrastructure and technology. Unfortunately, Maryland did not receive additional funding because the Moore Administration chose not to pursue a SNAP nutritious food waiver.

This funding will expand access to preventive, primary, maternal, and behavioral healthcare in Maryland’s rural communities, strengthen the rural healthcare workforce by helping recruit and retain doctors and nurses, improve emergency care coordination, and modernize facilities and telehealth so patients can receive high-quality care closer to home. These investments will directly benefit rural residents and communities across Maryland, especially those in Maryland’s First District.

Statement from Congressman Andy Harris:

“I commend the Trump Administration for its leadership in delivering billions of dollars to strengthen rural health care nationwide as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill. Unfortunately, the Moore administration failed to adequately prioritize Maryland’s application by not applying for a SNAP nutritious food waiver, causing our rural communities to miss out on additional millions of dollars that would have been flowing into our state. As a physician and representative of a rural district — and the only member of Maryland’s congressional delegation to support the passage of these rural healthcare funds, I’m ready to work with the Trump Administration to address the needs of rural Marylanders with these dollars.”
