Casten Calls for Noem Impeachment

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Sean Casten (IL-06)

January 09, 2026

Washington, D.C. (January 9, 2026) — Today, U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (IL-06) called for impeachment proceedings against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and released the following statement:

“Under Kristi Noem’s failed leadership, the Department of Homeland Security has sanctioned the murder and baseless arrest of American citizens, endangered communities throughout Illinois and the United States, subjected human beings to shockingly inhumane conditions in the name of racism and xenophobia, and denied due process to citizens and non-citizens alike.

“The murder of Renee Good is a tragic episode in a story of harm and destruction orchestrated by Secretary Noem and ICE that must not be tolerated anywhere.

“I support immediate Congressional action up to and including impeachment proceedings, but that alone is insufficient. The entire chain of command who have enabled a culture of murder must face justice.”

Yesterday, Rep. Casten spoke on the House floor to demand that House Republicans take accountability for the tragedy in Minneapolis. You can watch his speech by clicking HERE or on the image below:

LEADER JEFFRIES ON CNN: “WE’RE CALLING ON JOHN THUNE TO BRING THE BILL UP FOR A VOTE IMMEDIATELY”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District of New York)

Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries appeared on CNN’s The Situation Room, where he made clear that Democrats are demanding that Senate Republicans bring Democrats’ House-passed extension of the ACA tax credits and will continue to push back on Donald Trump and Republicans’ corruption.

WOLF BLITZER: Leader Jeffries, thanks so much for being with us. This measure is largely expected to go nowhere in the US Senate, as you know. Do you have any hope at all that something can still be worked out? I know you’ve been speaking with some Republican leaders in the Senate.

LEADER JEFFRIES: It was a big victory for the American people to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits to prevent tens of millions of everyday Americans from experiencing dramatically increased health insurance premiums that in some cases will cost them an additional $1,000 or $2,000 per month. That’s unacceptable. That’s why the House was able to come together in a bipartisan coalition, 213 Democrats partnering with 17 Republicans, to deliver a decisive vote. It’s now on the Senate. Now, there are Republicans who claim that there’s no path forward for this bill to become law. But that same group of people made that claim about what was possible in the House of Representatives. The reality is the American people have made clear that they want to see the Affordable Care Act tax credits extended. The American people understand we have a broken healthcare system. Democrats are committed to addressing the Republican healthcare crisis. And all we need are a handful of Senate Republicans to join with every single member of the Senate Democratic Caucus and we can get this bill done in the Senate as well.

[…]

WOLF BLITZER: You think it’s still doable, that there will be enough Republicans in the Senate to pass this legislation?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Listen, it’s important to understand that a majority of the United States Senate currently supports a straightforward extension of the Affordable Care Act. All 47 Senate Democrats and four Senate Republicans have already been on record in support of this. So the obstacle right now is procedural. It’s John Thune indicating that they don’t want to do anything to protect healthcare affordability for millions of Americans, including people that he represents. And so it remains to be seen. We’re calling on John Thune to bring the bill up for a vote immediately. And if that happens, Wolf, it’s going to pass.

WOLF BLITZER: All right, we’ll see what happens because there certainly is a lot at stake for so many millions of Americans right now. Some other sensitive issues, Leader Jeffries. You were among the Members of Congress briefed by the Trump administration after the capture of the Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro. What was your takeaway from those highly classified briefings?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Those briefings left more questions than answers. The administration has no plan moving forward. They claim they’re going to run Venezuela. They can’t even run the United States of America properly. And here’s the reality: that the people of Venezuela should decide the future of Venezuela. Not Stephen Miller, who’s out of control, or Secretary Rubio or the so-called Secretary of Defense. None of them should be involved in running or deciding the future of Venezuela. More importantly, we don’t need another failed forever foreign war. That’s why I’m so thankful by the action that the Senate took yesterday in passing a War Powers Resolution that will restrict the ability of the Trump administration to engage in further military action in the absence of congressional approval. On the House side, Jim McGovern is leading a similar War Powers Resolution effort. And we are going to force a vote on that resolution so we can stop the Trump administration from engaging in this reckless activity moving forward.

WOLF BLITZER: And on that issue that you raised, the War Powers legislation, a handful of Senate Republicans, we’re talking specifically five of them, joined the Democrats in delivering a big rebuke to President Trump’s actions in Venezuela. They voted to allow a future vote that would limit the President’s powers in that conflict. The House is expected, as you correctly point out, to take a similar vote. What do you expect to happen in the House?

LEADER JEFFRIES: All we need are a handful of House Republicans to join with us, as was the case yesterday, and we can do the right thing by the American people. It’s my expectation that the votes will exist within the House Republican Conference, and you’ll have strong, of course, support from House Democrats who have been leading on this issue. The reality is the American People want the Trump administration to focus on solving their problems. Donald Trump promised that he was going to lower the high cost of living on day one. Costs aren’t going down. They’re going up. Housing costs out of control. Healthcare costs out of control. Grocery prices out of control. Child care costs out of control. Grocery prices, of course, as I mentioned, along with everyday goods, completely and totally out of control, unaffordable. America is too expensive, and the reality is the Trump tariffs are making things worse by thousands of additional dollars per year. And so the American people want action to improve their quality of life. House Democrats are committed to delivering that action, as we showed yesterday, and we just want a handful of Republicans to join us, and we can begin to get things turned around in the United States of America.

WOLF BLITZER: While I have you, another sensitive issue I want to discuss, the Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to meet next week with officials from Denmark after the White House said it would not rule out the use of military force to take the island of Greenland, which is part of Denmark. What’s your response to the administration’s push to acquire the Danish territory?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, listen, I was in Denmark, met with the Prime Minister last year. She made clear that Greenland is not for sale, and the future of Greenland should be decided by the people of Greenland in partnership, of course, with the people of Denmark. That’s the reality of the situation. Denmark is an ally, a NATO ally. You had people fight in conflicts for America from Denmark, and they don’t understand, just like the American people don’t understand, this level of aggressive rhetoric. And again, the President is focused on these extreme foreign adventures, as opposed to trying to deal with issues that matter for the American people. As Democrats, we’re going to continue to fight to lower the high cost of living, to improve their quality of life, to fix our broken healthcare system and we also have to clean up the corruption that we’re seeing and ask the questions, following the money, is this the reason why we’re seeing all of this aggressive foreign action? Who within the Trump orbit is going to benefit? What members of the Trump cartel stand to benefit financially from the things that we’re seeing talked about in Venezuela as it relates to oil and in other parts of the world?

WOLF BLITZER: The Democratic House Leader, Hakeem Jeffries, as usual, thanks so much for joining us.

Interview can be watched here.

Rep. Weber Secures Major Project Funding within the Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act, 2026

Washington, January 7, 2026

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Randy Weber (TX-14) secured more than $30 million for critical projects in Texas’ 14th Congressional District as part of H.R. 6938, the Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act, 2026.

The funding includes:

  • $17,900,000 for the Galveston Ship Channel Operation and Maintenance dredging as identified in the President’s Budget Request. Maintaining authorized depths in the Galveston Ship Channel is essential to supporting port reliability, supply chain efficiency, and the continued movement of energy and commerce that underpin America’s economic and national security.
  • $9,061,000 for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) construction account to deepen the Sabine-Neches Waterway from its current 40-foot depth to its congressionally authorized 48-foot depth, as authorized in the Water Resources Development Act of 2014.
  • $5,000,000 for USACE’s investigations account to advance pre-construction engineering and design for the Texas Coastal Project, locally known as the Ike Dike. This funding supports a comprehensive coastal resiliency strategy to reduce flood risk and restore ecosystems along the Texas coast. Estimates show the project could generate $2.31 billion in annual economic savings and improve more than 6,000 acres of coastal habitat.
  • $1,250,000 for Texas A&M AgriLife Research to support oyster research and the development of a long-term breeding program for the rapidly expanding Texas Gulf Coast oyster aquaculture industry. This investment will strengthen domestic seafood production, reduce pressure on vulnerable wild fisheries, and advance marine aquaculture as a growing sector of Texas agriculture.

“This didn’t happen overnight,” said Rep. Weber. “Southeast Texas is a gateway to our nation’s economic and strategic strength, and advancing projects of this scale requires sustained effort. I’ve worked to keep these priorities moving forward because protecting the coast, moving energy and commerce through our ports, and supporting the livelihoods tied to our waterways all ensure Texas’ 14th District is prepared to meet the nation’s needs when it matters most.”

The Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act, 2026 now advances to the U.S. Senate for further consideration.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) today funded waterline improvements in the City of Rincon, Georgia as part of the House-passed

Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act, 2026.

The bill includes $1 million to upgrade the existing 8-inch waterline, which runs from Chimney Road to Old Augusta Road, with over 21,000 feet of 16-inch waterline, relieving the stressed and inadequate current system of water pressure issues and providing adequate services for growth in the region.

“As a former mayor, I understand the importance of upgrading and maintaining water infrastructure to ensure that it meets the needs of current and future residents. I’ve had the privilege of spending time in Rincon and believe this project is necessary to meet local needs, improve quality-of-life, and plan for upcoming growth so the city can thrive for generations to come,” said Rep. Carter.

“In the big picture of things, Rincon, Georgia is a growing city of approximately 12,000 residents and hardly a map dot. Congressman Carter has shown up for food drives, our state of the city address, and continues to not overlook local needs. He and his staff are a phone call away, and the City of Rincon is thankful for their relentless efforts to create a higher quality-of-life for all Rincon residents by putting in the hard work to help us with the appropriation of federal funds to assist our much-needed water project. Thank you for making our small city a priority,” said Kevin Exley, Mayor of Rincon, GA.

Carter votes against Biden COVID Bonus extension

Washington, January 8, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) today released the following statement after voting against a Democrat-backed three-year extension of Biden COVID Bonuses in Obamacare plans:

“Democrats wrecked health care when they passed the UnAffordable Care Act. Throwing more money at a broken system, riddled with waste, fraud, and abuse, without addressing the root cause of skyrocketing costs does nothing but bail out Big Insurance and illegal immigrants. We should be empowering patients and promoting health care competition, like House Republicans did when we passed the Lower Health Care Premiums for All Americans Act, not sending money to billion-dollar corporations that benefit from patients’ pain and suffering.”

Wasserman Schultz, Soto, Meeks Lead 70 House Democrats to Demand Trump Administration Restore TPS for Venezuelans

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23)

While Maduro was captured and brought to the United States to face justice, his criminal accomplices remain in power,” wrote the Members. “We are disturbed that the Administration has vocally backed these individuals, who are complicit in the worst abuses of the Venezuelan regime over the last decade, while dismissing the pro-democracy leadership of the legitimate president-elect, Edmundo González, and Nobel Peace Prize winning opposition leader María Corina Machado.”

Conditions in the country are deeply unstable and dangerous, and the still-intact
Venezuelan regime, emboldened by support from the President of the United States,
has doubled down on repression and brutality since taking power.”

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25), Darren Soto (FL-9), and House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory Meeks (NY-5) led 70 House Democrats in a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem demanding they immediately restore Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans following the Trump Administration’s military action in Venezuela. The letter was signed by every Democratic Member of Congress from Florida. No Republicans signed the letter.

On Saturday, January 3, 2026, the Trump Administration conducted a major military operation in Venezuela, without Congressional authorization or notification, to depose and arrest Nicolás Maduro, leading to further instability in the nation. TPS is designed to protect immigrants from nations destabilized by war, violence, or natural disasters from deportation back to unsafe conditions.

“Hundreds of thousands of lawful Venezuelan residents who benefited from TPS…are facing deportation in the coming weeks to instability, desperate poverty and danger—conditions that have become even more dangerous since President Trump ordered military strikes and special operations to remove dictator Nicolás Maduro,” the Members wrote. “Many Venezuelans are hiding out in their homes, terrified of follow-on strikes or harassment by the regime which remains in place.”

“While Maduro was captured and brought to the United States to face justice, his criminal accomplices remain in power,” wrote the Members.

Other signers of the letter include: Reps. Amo, Balint, Barragán, Bell, Bonamici, Brown, Carson, Casten, Castor, Cherfilus-McCormick, Chu, Cisneros, Cleaver, Conaway, Crockett, Dean, DeSaulnier, Doggett, Elfreth, Escobar, Espaillat, Frankel, Frost, Robert Garcia, Sylvia Garcia, Goldman, Gottheimer, Green, Huffman, Jonathan Jackson, Julie Johnson, Kamlager-Dove, Krishnamoorthi, Larsen, Larson, Susie Lee, Lieu, Lynch, McBride, McGovern, McIver, Menendez, Meng, Moskowitz, Moulton, Nadler, Norton, Pallone, Panetta, Pingree, Pou, Pressley, Raskin, Rivas, Salinas, Scanlon, Schakowsky, Scholten, Robert Scott, Titus, Tokuda, Torres, Trahan, Vargas, Waters, Watson Coleman, and Wilson.

The complete letter can be read here and below.

Dear Secretary Rubio and Secretary Noem:

We write to urge you to immediately restore Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans following the Trump Administration’s military action in Venezuela. Conditions in the country are deeply unstable and dangerous, and the still-intact Venezuelan regime, emboldened by support from the President of the United States, has doubled down on repression and brutality since taking power.

The Trump Administration’s calamitous decision to terminate TPS for Venezuelans in January 2025 was rooted in a determination that conditions in the country had improved. This claim was baseless at the time, and, with the regime left in place, it is certainly untrue now. This termination of lawful status has caused unimaginable fear and anxiety for law-abiding Venezuelan families, who passed criminal background checks, earned work permits, and paid fees and taxes.

Hundreds of thousands of lawful Venezuelan residents who benefited from TPS are set to lose their employment authorization, which will have devastating economic consequences for essential sectors in Florida and across the country. Many are facing deportation in the coming weeks to instability, desperate poverty and danger—conditions that have become even more dangerous since President Trump ordered military strikes and special operations to remove dictator Nicolás Maduro.

This administration has not just abandoned Venezuelans in the diaspora, they have abandoned the Venezuelans that remain in Venezuela, who yearn for freedom and a democratic transition. While Maduro was captured and brought to the United States to face justice, his criminal accomplices remain in power, including de facto interim president Delcy Rodriguez, Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López, and Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello (who was indicted alongside Maduro in 2019). We are disturbed that the Administration has vocally backed these individuals, who are complicit in the worst abuses of the Venezuelan regime over the last decade, while dismissing the pro-democracy leadership of the legitimate president-elect, Edmundo González, and Nobel Peace Prize winning opposition leader María Corina Machado.

The worst fears of the Venezuelan community were confirmed as President Trump stated that Delcy Rodriguez will be empowered to “make Venezuela great again” and underscored that his objective was extracting oil resources from the country rather than ending the suffering of Venezuelans and promoting a peaceful, democratic transition of power.

In the days since the U.S. military operation commenced, which included missile and drone strikes in densely populated areas of Caracas that damaged residential buildings and injured innocent bystanders, the Venezuelan regime has enacted a new law criminalizing any expression of support for Maduro’s exit from the country. Dozens of people have been arrested and jailed, including journalists, for sending text messages or issuing social media posts related to the news. Many Venezuelans are hiding out in their homes, terrified of follow-on strikes or harassment by the regime which remains in place.

In light of these developments, we urge you to immediately rescind the revocation of TPS for Venezuelan beneficiaries and extend these critical protections for law-abiding Venezuelans who are genuinely fearful of being sent back to the same murderous regime under new management.

CASTOR STATEMENT ON HOUSE PASSAGE OF DEMOCRATS’ AFFORDABLE CARE ACT THREE-YEAR TAX CREDIT EXTENSION

House Democrats’ bipartisan bill to extend health care savings passes in the House 230-196, with only one Florida Republican voting to save health care up for millions of Florida families

Washington, January 8, 2026

Today, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (FL-14) released the following statement after voting “yes” on House of Representatives passage of Democrats’ historic bipartisan discharge petition that would extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) Tax Credits for the next three years:

“Neighbors across the Tampa Bay area who are grappling with huge health cost increases in the new year have hope for their pocketbooks and affordable care. House Democrats successfully forced a vote and were joined by seventeen Republicans to pass a three-year extension of enhanced tax credits. I appreciate the many Tampa Bay neighbors who shared their stories about the economic stability that affordable health coverage provides. Our health care system needs reform, but we cannot allow Republicans to sabotage health care for 22 million Americans in order to fund massive tax cuts for billionaires. People deserve affordable, consistent access to the care they need.

“The ACA has been a godsend for hardworking Americans since it was signed into law fifteen years ago in ending discrimination for preexisting conditions, allowing young people to stay on parents insurance until age 26, and providing true options for the self-employed. Our country and economy are stronger when Americans are healthy and can thrive.

“I am thankful to the handful of Republicans who worked in a bipartisan manner with Democrats to get this bill across the finish line.

“The Senate should immediately pass the three-year so our neighbors have greater access to more affordable health care coverage.”

The Office of Congresswoman Kathy Castor is collecting stories about how the Affordable Care Act Tax Credits help her neighbors. Stories can be shared here.

LEADER JEFFRIES ON MS NOW: “WE’RE DEMANDING THAT JOHN THUNE BRING IT TO A VOTE NEXT WEEK”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District of New York)

Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries appeared on MS NOW’s All In, where he made clear that because of the leadership of House Democrats, the House passed legislation to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits that Republicans let expire on January 1 and that Senate Republicans must follow our lead and vote to lower premiums.

CHRIS HAYES: Joining me now is House Democratic Leader, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries of New York. Congressman, let’s start on that vote and I want to ask you about the situation that’s developing in Minneapolis and Portland as well. But first of all, how did it come to pass that a three-year extension of these subsidies passes the House the first week back with a Republican majority?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, it was a big victory for the American people. Every single House Democrat holding firm, making clear that we needed to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits to prevent tens of millions of Americans from experiencing dramatically-increased health insurance costs that would have prevented them, of course, from being able to go see a doctor when they need one. We’re talking about health insurance increases that in some instances amount to $1,000 or $2,000 per month. Unacceptable. That’s for working class Americans, middle class Americans and everyday Americans. And for months, we’ve raised the stakes on this issue and have been clear that we’ll find a bipartisan path forward on any issue when it relates to addressing the affordability crisis. But we were not going to go along to get along in terms of gutting the healthcare of the American people. And public sentiment, as Abraham Lincoln once said, is everything. With it, nothing can fail. Without it, nothing can succeed. And we were able to work with the people across the country who rose up and made clear this is something that Congress needed to get done. And in partnership with 17 House Republicans who joined us, we made progress where people thought it was otherwise impossible.

CHRIS HAYES: Just quickly to follow up on this. So where does this, I mean, is this DOA in the Senate? Is there the possibility of this actually happening in the Senate? What’s your understanding of what happens now?

LEADER JEFFRIES: It’s definitively not dead on arrival in the Senate. Leader Schumer, and every single Senate Democrat, supports our legislation, a clean three-year, straightforward extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits. In fact, in December, a majority of Senators, every single Senate Democrat and four Senate Republicans, supported this legislation. Meaning, there’s a majority that exists in the Senate right now. And we’re demanding that John Thune bring it to a vote next week. No more procedural games, no more obstacles that are erected when we know that a majority of the Senators support legislation which is supported by the overwhelming majority of the American people.

CHRIS HAYES: You are obviously in the minority in the House, but it’s a very narrow minority right now. If I’m not mistaken, I believe Marjorie Taylor Greene’s departure, outright departure from Congress, the sad and premature passing of a Republican Member of Congress at the age of 65 and another Member who I believe is incapacitated in the hospital right now means that it’s an operational one-vote majority, I believe, if i’m not mistaken?

LEADER JEFFRIES: That’s right. We’re basically looking at 217 Republicans and 213 Democrats. At the end of the month, we think we’ll be at 218 Republicans and 214 Democrats. I think what was missed from the very beginning of this Congress, Chris, was the fact that though it was a very disappointing election in 2024 and there are a lot of lessons to be learned, many of which we’ve already applied, which is why we decisively won victories across the country, including in Virginia, in New Jersey and California in November of 2025, but I think that we overperformed the national political environment, and the House was already very narrow. Republicans, to start the Congress, only had a three-seat majority, which is why they’re trying to gerrymandered maps all across the country. By the way, we’re pushing back against them aggressively, stopping them from implementing their scheme. And so, this is the smallest majority at this point that any party has had since the Great Depression. And we’re going to continue to stay on the case. We’re going to continue to push back against Donald Trump and his extremism that’s being unleashed on the American people as we’ve horrifically seen in Minnesota. And we’re going to fight to lower the high cost of living, fix our broken healthcare system and address the corruption that is happening from this administration in real time.

CHRIS HAYES: In the wake of the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis, lots of responses from Members of your Caucus, local elected representatives, one of the things I’ve seen from Members of the Democratic Caucus are calls to impeach Kristi Noem, not just for her stewardship of the department, but specifically the fact that she went out to the country and essentially lied, slandered a woman who had just been killed, a mother of three. There are efforts to impeach Kristi Noem. Are you open to those efforts? Do you support impeachment of Kristi Noem?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Yeah, we haven’t ruled anything in or anything out in terms of the proper way to bring about accountability. But what I can say, and we’ll have a conversation among some Caucus Members on this tomorrow—I don’t want to get out ahead of it—and then we’ll reconvene early next week. But what’s clear to me is Kristi Noem is deeply unqualified, deeply unserious and deeply dangerous. She’s a complete and total disgrace. She should never have been confirmed by the Senate in terms of holding this position. She lied to the American people, as she’s been doing repeatedly, but in this instance, slandered a 37-year-old American citizen whose life was taken without justification by an ICE agent who showed depraved indifference to human life. That agent should be criminally investigated to the full extent of the law. And simultaneously, in Congress, we need to decisively respond, and we will. And that’ll be led, of course, by Robert Garcia, who leads our efforts on the Oversight Committee, Bennie Thompson, who leads our efforts on the Homeland Security Committee and Jamie Raskin, who leads our effort on Judiciary.

CHRIS HAYES: Final question for you. This is something that Senator Chris Murphy said. ‘Democrats cannot vote for a DHS budget that doesn’t restrain the growing lawlessness of this agency.’ Do you agree with that?

LEADER JEFFRIES: I agree that we need congressional restraint to limit or address decisively the lawlessness that the Department of Homeland Security has unleashed on the American people, and we should explore every opportunity in terms of getting to that place. That’s legislative, and that’s dealing with some of the bills that are going to be before us over the next couple of weeks. Look, we’ve made clear, Chris, that we don’t go along to get along as House Democrats. That’s why we delivered this big victory for the American people. And Senate Democrats also delivered a big victory in terms of the authorization to use military force resolution passing. And we just have to continue to stay on the case on all of these things in order to begin the process of decisively ending this national nightmare in the United States.

CHRIS HAYES: We will be talking to some Senators about precisely that War Powers Resolution, which did get Republican votes today and did pass on a day when Donald Trump’s Republicans lost a bunch of votes, both in the House and the Senate. It was a really interesting day beneath the awful tragedy that’s been unfolding in Minneapolis. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, thank you very much.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Thank you.

Interview can be watched here.

MI Congresswoman Haley Stevens Secures Federal Funding for Critical Oakland County Projects; Votes to Pass Bipartisan Government Funding Bill

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Haley Stevens (D-MI) announced federal funding she secured for critical Oakland County projects in the House-passed bipartisan funding bill, H.R. 6938. Stevens voted in favor of the bill, which overwhelmingly passed 397-28. The bill now heads to the Senate for passage and must be signed into law by the President.

“My job in Congress is to put Michigan first. This funding package reflects that work,” said Congresswoman Haley Stevens. “I’m proud to have secured federal dollars for critical projects here at home that will improve our infrastructure, support good-paying jobs, strengthen our public safety, and invest in our manufacturing economy.”

Stevens, who was recently recognized as the most effective Michigan Democrat in Congress, secured funding for six projects ranging from repairing and replacing critical water infrastructure to promoting manufacturing to providing technology upgrades for Oakland County’s courts and law enforcement.

Specifically, the funding she secured provides:

  • $1,039,000 for Oakland University’s Digital Twin Center for Smart Adaptable Manufacturing. Digital Twins are highly advanced virtual models of physical manufacturing systems that provide data in real-time to monitor, diagnose, predict, and optimize the performance of a manufacturing system. This center will develop and deploy Digital Twins to boost Michigan manufacturing resilience and adaptability.
  • $1,031,000 to Oakland County for the Safer Michigan with Courts and Law Enforcement Management Information System (CLEMIS) Modernization and Transformation Project. CLEMIS is a statewide information system used by over 250 agencies that allows police, fire, EMS, prosecutors and courts to securely share critical data and coordinate emergency response.
  • $1,092,000 to the City of Berkley for Lead Water Service Line Replacements. Funding will be used to replace roughly 250 known lead water service lines throughout the City of Berkley to provide clean and safe drinking water to Michigan families.
  • $1,092,000 to the City of Farmington for Community Sanitary System Improvements. Funding will replace outdated generators and pumps and modernize an existing pump station, increasing reliability and energy efficiency for the community.
  • $723,200 to the City of Auburn Hills for Stormwater Infrastructure. Funding will repair and replace failing storm sewer pipes, an undersized storm sewer, and deteriorated manholes and catch basins.
  • $400,000 to the City of Ferndale for Lead Water Service Line Verifications. Funding will help identify the materials of unknown water service lines which will allow the City to more effectively plan for the replacement of potentially dangerous lead service lines.

Here’s what Michiganders are saying about Stevens delivering for Oakland County:

“This investment in Oakland University’s Digital Twin for Adaptable Manufacturing Project represents a significant step forward for our region’s manufacturing ecosystem. By combining advanced digital technologies with workforce development and industry collaboration, this project will help prepare students for high-demand careers, support innovation among local manufacturers, and strengthen the economic vitality of our community. We are deeply grateful for the continued support that makes this transformative work possible.” – Louay M. Chamra, Ph.D., Dean and Professor, School of Engineering and Computer Science, Oakland University

“We are incredibly grateful to Congresswoman Haley Stevens’ office for supporting our efforts to eliminate lead service lines, which is a top priority in the City of Berkley. This funding will help us make a greater investment in our community’s infrastructure needs.” – Berkley Mayor Bridget Dean

“This grant award is a vital step in our commitment to environmental stewardship and service reliability. Not only would this project help protect the Rouge River and the surrounding environment in multiple communities, but it will help reduce maintenance costs, protect our public Service staff and make this a safer and more reliable facility.” – David M. Murphy, Farmington City Manager

“The City of Auburn Hills is optimistic that legislation that includes granting the city the funding to complete critically needed storm sewer replacement, manhole repair, rehab, and reconstruction, as well as catch basin repair, rehab, and reconstruction, will be approved by the senate and signed into law so that we may continue to provide well-functioning stormwater infrastructure that benefits the many residents and businesses of our community. We are grateful to Congresswoman Stevens and her staff for recognizing the importance of this work and for championing our stormwater needs at the federal level.” – Auburn Hills City Manager Tom Tanghe

“Lead in drinking water is a serious risk to community health. Over 100 years ago, lead was commonly used in water supply lines. Many of Ferndale’s homes were developed during this time. By verifying these materials, we can properly plan the necessary replacements. We have made significant efforts to upgrade the system, but these improvements are expensive and mostly funded by residents. We are grateful for our collaboration with our legislators to help us identify funding opportunities to address local issues. This funding will help us determine the material of about 600 service lines so our team can focus on replacing known lead lines and making our community safer, healthier, and happier.” – Ferndale Mayor Raylon Leaks-May

Washington, D.C. – Today, in response to House passage of the bill to restore the Affordable Care Act health care subsidies, Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens released the following statement:

“Today, the House took a big step to protect Michigan families from rising health care costs. I proudly voted yes to extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies that make coverage more accessible for tens of thousands of Michiganders who rely on it every month. I’ll keep fighting to lower health care costs and make sure no one is priced out of the care they need.”

In a new video released earlier today, Stevens called out Republicans for unnecessarily raising health care costs on tens of thousands of Michiganders.

Congresswoman Stevens made it clear: if Republicans cared about making life more affordable for Michigan families, they should’ve all voted yes.

Key Excerpts:

  • I fought tooth and nail last year to stop this from happening, but Republicans wouldn’t budge. They wanted your costs to go up.
  • If Republicans care about making life more affordable for Michigan families, it’s time for them to vote yes.
  • I’ll keep fighting to lower costs for Michiganders and make health care accessible for everyone in our state.
