SARASOTA – U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) today released the latest installment of the Veterans History Project Series, featuring Musician Third Class Dennis White, United States Navy. A lifelong musician and the recipient of the John Philip Sousa Award at his high school in Springfield, Ohio, White’s journey to military service was rooted in a passion for music and a determination to serve his country.
White served at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and performed across New York City, including a national television appearance on a Saturday night version of The Tonight Show. He also played during Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to New York and attended the Broadway premiere of South Pacific. Through these once-in-a-lifetime experiences, he developed lifelong friendships and a deep appreciation for the discipline and direction instilled by military service.
“Well, basically, I’d like people to understand this: there are people who are afraid to take a challenge. And if you’re enthusiastic about something, follow your dream and follow your own guidelines; that will make you a better person. It really did change my personality, my attitude, and my character,” said White. “I don’t know where I would’ve been if I hadn’t joined the music program or even the Navy. It led to opportunities. Like I said, I didn’t give it up. I counted it as a hobby. But it gave me direction into adulthood and just made me a better person all around, I think.”
“Dennis White’s story exemplifies the unique paths our servicemembers take,” said Congressman Steube. “His service reminds us that the military doesn’t just train warriors; it molds leaders, artists, and professionals. We are honored to help preserve his legacy for future generations.”
After leaving the Navy in 1959, White went on to a successful career in banking, ultimately serving as Vice President at Ellis Bank in Sarasota. He remained involved with the Navy music community, raised a family in Florida, and continued mentoring young musicians throughout his life.

Researchers, scholars, and educators rely upon VHP collections as a primary source. The oral histories, photographs, manuscripts, and other original materials supplement historical texts and valued cultural resources. Veterans from all branches and ranks of the United States military who served in World War I through the more recent conflicts are eligible to participate. CLARKE SLAMS GOP’S ATTEMPT TO SLASH MEDICAID IN ENERGY AND COMMERCE COMMITTEE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke delivered the following remarks at the Committee on Energy and Commerce Full Committee Reconciliation Markup:

“I would like to begin by sharing a story of one of my constituents, David. This is David — one of the many faces of Medicaid. David is a 55-year-old Brooklyn resident who has been living with congestive heart failure since 2016. Once a full-time worker, his diagnosis sadly forced him to stop working and rely solely on Medicaid for his healthcare. Medicaid covers all aspects of his medical needs — including the daily medications he has to take, regular cardiac monitoring, and hospital-based care. His condition was so severe that during his first visit to the hospital, he remained admitted for nearly a full year, that extended hospitalization was entirely covered by Medicaid — and it saved his life. He was able to receive this life-saving care at SUNY Downstate, a vital hospital in my district, that also heavily relies on Medicaid dollars to provide high-quality care to their patients — just like most healthcare institutions across the nation, from rural to urban.

The medical team there provided him with consistent, high-quality care in a community-based setting. Without Medicaid, David would lose access to his medications and to the physicians who have managed his condition for nearly a decade. David clearly said, ‘If Medicaid is cut, I will have no way to afford my care. No medication. No follow-up. No hospital. Without Medicaid, I will die prematurely.’ David’s story is a powerful example of how essential Medicaid is. It’s not just policy, but a lifeline for Americans in my district and across the nation.

“Let’s be crystal clear about what’s happening here. We are being asked to sit in this room today and pretend that gutting Medicaid is somehow a ‘necessary evil’ and ‘a tough decision’ made in the name of fiscal responsibility. But it’s not. It is a political CHOICE that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are choosing to make. It is a CHOICE that disproportionately targets low-income communities, communities of color, immigrants, and working-class families. It is a CHOICE that will impact hospital systems, especially in New York, that are still trying to recover from the devastating impacts of COVID-19. It is a CHOICE that will strip away life-saving healthcare for 17.3 million Americans — nearly 7 million, or 1 in 3, New Yorkers who rely on this program.

“In New York’s 9th District, this amounts to over 65,000 people over the age of 65, over 24,000 disabled children and adults, over 146,000 young adults, over 85,000 parents and caretakers, over 149,000 children, and over 11,000 pregnant women. MAKE NO MISTAKE — this Medicaid cut would hit Republican or red states the hardest. For months, House Republicans have lied about their plans to cut nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid — and now the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has confirmed that their plan will kick millions of people off their health care. The only winners in the Republican budget scheme are their billionaire donors like Elon Musk.

“And yet, here we are ONCE AGAIN, witnessing Republicans playing political games with people’s lives, so their billionaire friends enjoy tax breaks and their private jets. ONCE AGAIN, they are here to feed their relentless obsession to dismantle the Affordable Care Act — which we’ve fought to preserve. Somehow we always find the money for tax breaks for the wealthy… but when it comes to health care for working people, suddenly we are out of money? This is boldface cruelty. Their goal is to shift federal support to their donors’ pockets. They are punitive, they are shortsighted, and they will devastate people — like David.

“So no, I will NOT quietly sit here so that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle can chip away at the health and dignity of the American people and call it ‘compromise.’ In one of the wealthiest and most advanced nations in the world, EVERYONE — no matter their political beliefs — deserves access to quality, affordable health care. This is not fiscal policy. This is a moral failure. And I reject this bill.

“Cruelty is the point!”

Congressman Sherman Statement on the Release of Edan Alexander

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32), senior Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Co-Chair of the House Israel Allied Caucus and the most senior Democrat on the House-Knesset Parliamentary Friendship Group, released the following statement on the release of Edan Alexander from Hamas captivity:

“Grateful and relieved over the release of U.S.-Israeli citizen, Edan Alexander. While we celebrate Edan’s return home, we must continue working for the safe release of ALL remaining hostages – NOW.”

Edan Alexander, the last known living American hostage in Gaza, was released by Hamas and reunited with his family on Monday, ending an 18-month ordeal that began with the militant group’s October 7 attack.

Hamas announced Sunday night it had agreed to free Alexander, 21, after several days of talks with the United States, which bypassed Israel, and formed part of an effort to reach a ceasefire and resume the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Pressley Slams Trump’s Abrupt Firing of Librarian of Congress, Carla Dr. Hayden

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07)

Pressley Has Led Efforts Pushing Back Against Book Bans, Attacks on Museums, and Efforts to Whitewash American History

Earlier Today, Pressley Convened a Roundtable and Presser to Condemn Trump’s Attacks on Museums, Affirm Importance of Preserving Shared History

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) issued the following statement condemning Donald Trump’s abrupt and unjustified firing of Dr. Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress. Congresswoman Pressley has led efforts pushing back against book bans, attacks on museums, and efforts to whitewash American history—and earlier today she hosted a convening in Boston to uplift the vital role of museums in preserving our shared history.

“Donald Trump’s reckless decision to fire Dr. Carla Hayden—an accomplished, principled, and history-making Librarian of Congress—without justification is a disgrace. Dr. Hayden’s leadership has elevated the Library of Congress as a beacon of knowledge and history for everyone in America, and her dismissal will only undermine the Library of Congress as a critical resource and public good.

“To be clear, this is about more than one distinguished public servant—it is part of Trump and Republicans’ coordinated, anti-Black assault on truth, education, and the American story itself. From banning books and rewriting history, to attacking Smithsonian museums and rolling back diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, occupant Trump wants a citizenry that is ignorant, uninformed, and uneducated about America’s past.

“Dr. Hayden deserved better. The Library of Congress is the People’s Library, and this shameful abuse of power will not go unanswered.”

Last week, Congresswoman Pressley and 70 colleagues demanded an investigation into the impact of Trump’s harmful Executive Order attacking Smithsonian museums – namely, the American Art Museum, the American Women’s History Museum, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Last month, Rep. Pressley spoke out on the House Floor condemning the Executive Order and affirming that Black history is American history. Rep. Pressley has also joined Rep. Dina Titus (NV-01) and 126 of their colleagues urging President Trump to reconsider his executive order dismantling the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Congresswoman Pressley also joined Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and their Massachusetts delegation colleagues demanding answers about the Trump Administration’s staffing cuts at the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and attempts to cancel NEH grants in Massachusetts and across the country.

Rep. Pressley has been an outspoken champion for intellectual freedom and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, and she has been on the front lines of the fight against Trump and Republicans’ efforts to ban books and erase Black history.

In April, Rep. Pressley delivered a floor speech slamming Trump’s attack on Smithsonian museums and affirming that Black history is American history.

Rep. Pressley is also the author of the Books Save Lives Act legislation to confront the rise of book bans in America and ensure inclusive learning environments.

Earlier this year, amid the unprecedented onslaught against diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives from the Trump Administration, Congresswoman Pressley re-introduced H.R. 40, legislation to establish a federal commission to examine the lasting legacy of slavery and develop reparations proposals for African American descendants of enslaved people.

Last year, Rep. Pressley and House Oversight Ranking Member Jamies Raskin introduced the Federal Government Equity Improvement Act and the Equity in Agency Planning Act to codify racial equity across federal agencies and improve government services for underserved communities.

Rep. Aguilar Announces $300,000 to Strengthen CSUSB Artificial Intelligence Cybersecurity Research

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Pete Aguilar (31 CD Ca)

Today, Rep. Pete Aguilar announced a $300,000 grant for California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) to enhance its research into the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on the cybersecurity workforce. Continuing Rep. Aguilar’s focus on strengthening the cybersecurity program at CSUSB, this grant will enable educators at the university to adapt their curriculum as AI technology rapidly evolves.
“As artificial intelligence technology develops, it is crucial that the cybersecurity workforce in the Inland Empire is equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to ensure we can keep up,” said Rep. Pete Aguilar. “This grant funding is an investment in the future success of the CSUSB students entering the cyber workforce and ensuring that the Inland Empire stays at the forefront of cybersecurity.”
“The grant supports our effort to forecast all the ways AI will impact the cyber workforce and to provide guidance for educators to adjust in real time to the changes with an information website, a series of workshops throughout the next two years,” said Vincent Nestler, Associate Professor, CSUSB School of Cyber and Decision Sciences.
The funding comes as part of the U.S. National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure’s (OAC) National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) pilot award program. The project, entitled “EAGER: NAIRR Pilot Expansion: FA1: AI Horizon: Forecasting Cybersecurity Workforce Evolution and Adaptive Skill Development,” will support efforts to integrate AI technology into cybersecurity by supporting research and educational needs at universities across the country. The grant funding will support the training of approximately 1,000 faculty members and 1,000 students across 470 higher education institutions across the country.
Rep. Aguilar has made strengthening the cybersecurity program at California State University, San Bernardino, a top priority. During his time in Congress, Rep. Aguilar has secured more than $130 million in federal resources for CSUSB’s cybersecurity program as part of his commitment to help connect students to national security jobs and strengthen the Inland Empire’s cybersecurity.

Councilman Chris Hinds to Join DeGette at Energy & Commerce Committee Markup of Republican Attack on Medicaid

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Diana DeGette (First District of Colorado)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Diana DeGette (CO-01) announced that Denver City Councilman Chris Hinds will be joining her at the Energy & Commerce Committee markup of House Republicans’ bill that would kick at least 13.7 million Americans off their health care.

“Today, House Republicans are trying to force through Trump’s big, bogus bill to kick millions of Americans, like Councilman Hinds, off their health care,” said DeGette. “Throughout his time in public service, Councilman Hinds has not allowed his disability to get in the way of his commitment to his constituents and our city of Denver. He represents what is possible when you have the care that you need to live a healthy and successful life, but Republicans just see him as a few extra dollars they can squeeze out to fund their billionaire tax cuts. Throughout this markup and beyond, I’m going to fight on behalf of the millions of Americans, like Councilman Hinds, who rely on Medicaid.”

“Defunding Medicaid isn’t just a policy issue—it’s a direct threat to the health and wellbeing of Denverites, including myself. I’m in D.C. to advocate for the 48% of Denver Health patients on Medicaid, the 60% of Denver births that happen there, and the countless uninsured who rely on it. Without Medicaid, the future of Denver’s only Level 1 trauma center—and healthcare across Colorado—is at risk,” said Councilman Hinds.

Councilman Chris Hinds is the first elected official in Denver (local, state, or federal) who uses a wheelchair for mobility. In 2008, Councilman Hinds was in an accident that paralyzed him from the chest down. He represents District 10 on the Denver City Council.

Councilman Hinds and Rep. DeGette will be available for interviews throughout the day. Contact Rep. DeGette’s Communications Director, Jack Stelzner, with interview requests.

Carter unveils bill to strip Newark ICE rioters from committee assignments

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Earl L Buddy Carter (GA-01)

Headline: Carter unveils bill to strip Newark ICE rioters from committee assignments

WASHINGTON, D.C. Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) today introduced a resolution to strip New Jersey Democratic Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Robert Menendez, and LaMonica McIver of their committee assignments following their illegal raid of an ICE facility in Newark, NJ.

“The radical left has lost their minds – they would rather raid an ICE facility to defend criminal illegal immigrants than represent their own constituents. This behavior constitutes an assault on our brave ICE agents and undermines the rule of law. The three members involved in this stunt do not deserve to sit on committees alongside serious lawmakers,”
said Rep. Carter.

As a bus of illegal immigrant detainees entered the security gate of Delany Hall Detention Center, an unruly group of protestors – including the three previously mentioned Democratic members of Congress – stormed the gate and broke into the detention facility, according to a press release from the Department of Homeland Security.

The resolution would remove Watson Coleman from the House Committee on Appropriations, McIver from the House Committees on Homeland Security and Small Business, and Menendez from the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

Hoyer Leads Pocan, Bishop, Ivey in Sending Letter to Top Appropriations Republicans Demanding They Respect Judiciary’s Independence

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steny H Hoyer (MD-05)

WASHINGTON, DC –  Today, Congressman Steny Hoyer (MD-05), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) led Subcommittee Members Rep. Mark Pocan (WI-02), Rep. Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), and Rep. Glenn Ivey (MD-04) in sending a letter to Appropriations Chair Tom Cole and FSGG Subcommittee Chair David Joyce demanding they respect the independence of the federal judiciary.

The letter condemned recent calls from House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan to use the appropriations process to retaliate against federal courts and judges that issue rulings unfavorable to the Trump Administration. The letter implored Republicans to reject this unprecedented assault on the rule of law and the separation of powers and system of checks and balanced enshrined in the Constitution.

“Policy riders to punish courts because one political party does not like how judges are ruling undermines our Constitution and misuses our authority as appropriators,” the lawmakers wrote. “All are free to criticize judgments where one’s opinions differ from the rulings. All are free to vigorously appeal nationwide injunctions to the Supreme Court. However, judges make their ruling based on the law and facts of the case and must do so without any fear that their rulings could provoke attempts to diminish the independence of the judicial branch. We should not be politicizing our judicial system to score political points.”

The full text of the letter is included below:

Dear Chairman Cole and Chairman Joyce:

We write in response to Chairman Jordan’s letter of March 31, 2025 requesting that the Committee on Appropriations take the unprecedented action of leveraging the appropriations process to retaliate against the federal judiciary for unfavorable rulings. The type of policy riders that Chairman Jordan recommends would not only undermine our constitutional system of separation of powers with checks and balances but are not within the purview of this Committee or the appropriations process. They must be rejected outright.

Since his inauguration, we have seen a dangerous trend seeking to eviscerate the independence of the judiciary. Members of the Administration have argued that the President can defy court orders it disagrees with and that they “don’t care what the judges think.” The President and his allies have bullied and threatened judges who rule against the President. One of our colleagues has even introduced articles of impeachment against a federal court judge. Further, the President has signed a flurry of executive orders to penalize individual law firms and lawyers who bring cases challenging the administration, strong-arming firms into so-called “settlements” that exact significant concessions.

The president has a constitutional duty to “take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed.” Nationwide injunctions issued by judges have impeded on political priorities for both parties throughout history, but our commitment to the rule of law must remain steadfast. President Trump’s actions undermine that sacred duty, endangering the Founders’ system of checks and balances that protects our rights, our economy, our communities, and our safety. Moreover, rather than exercising Congress’s constitutional role to reinforce our system of checks and balances, Chairman Jordan now seeks to sideline the courts and allow the president to continue his disregard of our laws and American values. This is inconsistent with the constitution’s three co-equal branches, the system that the Framers felt necessary to preclude that “the King can do no wrong.”

It is the role of the courts, not the President, to “say what the law is.” In its recent rulings, the courts have not exceeded their constitutional authority; rather, they have upheld their constitutional duty to fairly and impartially adjudicate cases, even when brought against the executive branch. As recently as 2023, conservative Members of Congress and state Attorneys General have celebrated judicial rulings granting the very nationwide  injunctions that Chairman Jordan seeks to undermine. Courts are ruling against the President at record rates because so many of his actions disregard established law, often demonstrating contempt for core constitutional principles like the rights to free speech, dissent, and due process. The Trump administration’s lawlessness is readily apparent to judges appointed by both Democratic and Republican presidents, including some put on the bench by President Trump himself.

Our judicial system cannot function if the courts are not sufficiently resourced. It is our responsibility as members of the Appropriations Committee to carefully review the budget requests submitted by the Supreme Court, Judicial Conference, and Administration Office of the U.S. Courts and to provide appropriations to allow the judiciary to appropriately serve the communities, businesses, and individuals that rely on the courts for justice. We should be providing the resources the courts need to meet their critical operational needs at a time when caseloads in the federal court system are the highest they have ever been and security threats against judges and their staff are increasing.

Questions about the judiciary’s budget request are more appropriately addressed by holding hearings and conducting oversight, as we have done in years past. Policy riders to punish courts because one political party does not like how judges are ruling undermines our constitution and misuses our authority as appropriators. All are free to criticize judgments where one’s opinions differ from the rulings. All are free to vigorously appeal nationwide injunctions to the Supreme Court. However, judges make their ruling based on the law and facts of the case and must do so without any fear that their rulings could provoke attempts to diminish the independence of the judicial branch. We should not be politicizing our judicial system to score political points.

As we continue the appropriations process, we must remain good stewards of taxpayer dollars while ensuring that our nation maintains an independent judiciary that is capable of upholding the rule of law. If we do not, we become a government of men, not laws.

Sincerely,
