Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus Leader Encouraged by new Executive Order on HBCUs

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams Ph.D. (NC-12), Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development, and Founder and Co-Chair of the Congressional Bipartisan, Bicameral Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caucus, released a statement following President Trump’s executive order on HBCUs.

“I welcome all and every initiative to support our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities because supporting HBCUs is not a partisan issue,” said Congresswoman Adams. “HBCUs are centers of achievement, excellence, and success, and have always punched above their weight, even in the face of historic underfunding.”

“In order to win the race in the 21st century to remain the world’s leading innovative country, we must have robust investments in our HBCUs through bills like the FUTURE Act and HBCU PARTNERS Act, two bills I fought hard to have signed into law. We also need to ensure our state governments are fully funding our 1890s Land Grant HBCUs, something the executive order stressed the importance of,” Adams continued.

We still have more work to do though, especially in holistic infrastructure investments at HBCUs, and I look forward to working with this administration and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass more impactful, bipartisan legislation for our HBCUs.”

“I’m a former college professor and I always told my students that we have to have a sense of urgency about the tasks in front of us. We need real timelines, and I am ready to work now. But, I must also say, if the administration dismantles our U.S. Department of Education, the future for HBCUs will further be in question. Let’s work together to ensure these institutions of higher education always remain HBCU Strong,” Adams concluded.

Adams, Kamlager-Dove Convene Roundtable to Address Black Higher Education and Strengthening HBCUs

WASHINGTON, DC— Today, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12), founder and co-chair of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caucus, and Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37), Congressional Black Caucus Whip, held a roundtable discussion with Reps. Sewell (AL-07), Hayes (CT-05), Sykes (OH-13), Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-20), Brown (OH-11), and Figures (AL-02), HBCU leadership, students, and advocacy organizations to highlight the impacts of Trump Administration policies on the HBCUs that have played a vital role in empowering Black students across the country.

The roundtable included presidents from Howard University, Bowie State University, Morgan State University, and Virginia Union University and representatives from Texas Southern University, the United Negro College Fund, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the 1890 Foundation to discuss student life concerns, academic access and funding, infrastructure and facilities, and the role of the federal government.

“HBCUs have always punched above their weight, producing the leaders, innovators, and changemakers who move this country forward,” said Congresswoman Adams. “Despite their success though, they face historic underfunding that force them to do more with less. It’s time we meaningfully invest in HBCUs so they can continue serving their students for generations to come.”

“Our HBCUs continue to face systemic challenges that impact student success, campus quality-of-life, and institutional growth. Shamefully, the Trump Administration’s attacks on DEI initiatives and higher education funding have only made these challenges worse,” said Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove. “Now is the time for policymakers, education leaders, and students to engage in direct dialogue about solutions to protect and uplift Black students.”

Rep. Adams Statement on President’s Budget Proposal

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Alma Adams (12th District of North Carolina)

WASHINGTON, DC— Today, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12), Senior Member of the House Agriculture Committee and the House Education & Workforce Committee, released a statement on President Trump’s proposed Fiscal Year 2026 budget.

“The president’s budget proposal is reckless and cruel, and would strip services away from millions of Americans,” said Congresswoman Adams. “It includes tens of billions of dollars in cuts to Title I schools, the NIH, and rental assistance—programs that we know work—in exchange for bigger tax breaks for billionaires. Fortunately, Congress, not the White House, sets the budget, and if this bill ever comes before us, I will vote against it.”

The president’s proposal includes unprecedented cuts that would rob millions of Americans of their food and housing security, healthcare, and educational opportunity.

“A budget is a reflection of the values you hold, and this budget speaks plainly to who the president is,” Adams continued. “He values making it harder for you to access Medicaid and Social Security. He values tax cuts for his friends over making sure Americans have a place to sleep at night. He values putting money in the pocket of Elon Musk while cutting services to you. He’s laid his values out before us, and I will continue to fight to ensure those values never become law.”

His proposed cuts include:

  • $4.5 billion in cuts to Title I schools and K-12 programs.
  • $1.6 billion in cuts to TRIO and GEAR UP, two critical programs for students from low-income households and students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • $980 million in cuts to the Federal Work-Study Program.
  • $729 million in cuts to Adult Education Programs.
  • $18 billion in cuts to the National Institute of Health.
  • $3.6 billion in cuts to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, slashing their budget in half.
  • $674 million in cuts to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
  • $1 billion in cuts to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
  • $26.7 billion in cuts to State Rental Assistance Block Grants.
  • $425 million in cuts to the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, a critical food assistance and domestic farm program that aids older Americans and food banks.

Rep. Adams Statement on President Trump’s First 100 Days, Immense Harm to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Alma Adams (12th District of North Carolina)

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12), released a statement on President Trump’s first 100 days in office and the immense harm him and Republicans in Congress have brought to the residents of NC-12, the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and the country.

“After 100 days under President Trump, his term can only be defined by economic hardship, divisive, partisan politics, and letting millions suffer for bigger tax breaks for billionaires,” said Congresswoman Adams. “The last three months have been disastrous, and my constituents have made it clear to me that they are overwhelmingly worse off thanks to this administration. But my Republican colleagues have no issues supporting President Trump’s cruel, unconstitutional actions anyway.”

“While Republicans cower to the White House, Democrats will continue to work for every single American,” Adams continued. “I will keep fighting their reckless agenda in committee and on the House floor. I will continue listening to my constituents so I can advocate for their needs. And I will continue to work with our partners in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County to ensure our community will take care of our neighbors, even when this administration won’t.”

Harm to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community

The Trump Administration has directly harmed hundreds of thousands of people in North Carolina’s 12th Congressional District and in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community. As Republicans look to pass their partisan budget bill, the harm will only grow.

Education

“Education isn’t a privilege, it’s a right and we will not let Republicans take it away from our children,” said Adams. “We are seeing this unconstitutional attempt to dismantle the federal Department of Education fought in court and I will continue to fight these cuts in Congress. Now, more than ever, we need to protect the educational future of our students.”

Hunger

  • Elon Musk’s DOGE has made major cuts to food security programs, including $30 million to North Carolina’s Local Food for Schools Cooperative Agreement Program, and the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program.
  • Now, Republicans in Congress are attempting to cut $230 billion in SNAP funding, the largest food security program in the country.
  • 160,000 Mecklenburg County residents receive aid from SNAP and the program carries with it $500 million in economic impacts.
  • This bill would also cut funds to the Free Student Lunch Program which 40,000 CMS students use for a reliable meal.

“You can’t be healthy if you’re hungry,” said Adams. “At a time when people are struggling to make ends meet, Republicans want to cut food security programs from the people who need it most. Our children, our elderly, our disabled, and our working families all rely on SNAP to put food on the table. Democrats will not allow our constituents to starve.”

Healthcare

“We cannot let Republicans treat lifesaving healthcare programs like Medicaid as if they’re just budget line items,” said Adams. “2.6 million North Carolinians rely on Medicaid for their health and wellness, providing affordable, accessible care to our most vulnerable. Make no mistake, Americans will die if Republicans cut Medicaid, all so they can give tax breaks to billionaires.”

Housing

  • As Charlotte-Mecklenburg faces an affordable housing crisis, the Trump Administration is cutting funds for critical rental and housing assistance.
  • The Republican Continuing Resolution cut rent subsidies and homelessness response grants by more than $700 million.
  • Funding for affordable housing developments remains frozen, throwing these developments into uncertainty.
  • Charlotte’s largest homeless shelter is facing uncertainty and unease due to the Trump Administration’s cuts on housing.

“While rental and housing costs continue to rise, Republicans want to cut an essential lifeline to affordable housing,” said Adams. “Housing security impacts everything: physical and mental health, job and economic stability, and food security. Yet, the Republican plan is to increase evictions while slashing housing and homeless support. That’s unacceptable. While I fight these cuts in Congress, I’m working with partners at the state, county, and local level to ensure we can continue providing fair housing for the people of my district.”

Adams, Figures Introduce Legislation to Protect Federal Funding for Land-Grant HBCUs

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Alma Adams (12th District of North Carolina)

WASHINGTON, DC— Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12), founder and co-chair of the Bipartisan, Bicameral Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caucus, and Congressman Shomari C. Figures (AL-02) introduced the Land-Grant Institution Parity Act

The Land-Grant Institution Parity Act protects federal funding for our land-grant colleges and universities, including the country’s 19 land-grant HBCUs, commonly referred to as 1890 Institutions. This bill comes following the USDA’s suspension and reinstatement of the 1890 National Scholars Program, a scholarship program for 1890 Institution students studying agriculture, food, or natural resources sciences, earlier this year.

“The Land-Grant Institution Parity Act is an important step to protect funding for our land-grant HBCUs and build equity in higher education,” said Congresswoman Adams. “1890 Institutions have always punched above their weight and provided outsized benefits to their students, their research, and their communities. They know how to do more with less, but they shouldn’t have to. It’s time we ensure these institutions of excellence always receive the funding they deserve.”

“Earlier this year, the Trump Administration suspended funding for historically Black land-grant colleges, but did not pause the same funding for the predominately white land-grant institutions,” said Rep. Figures. “That is simply wrong, and that decision sent a clear message about the vulnerability of programs designed to uplift underserved communities. Under this bill, funding for land-grant institutions will be treated equally and funds cannot be paused, cut, or eliminated without congressional approval. I’m committed to protecting our HBCUs and the students that they serve.”

Under the Land-Grant Institution Parity Act, federal officials are prohibited from reducing, eliminating, or suspending funding for 1890 Institutions without authorization from Congress. This bill aims to ensure long-term stability and equity for land-grant HBCUs and other land-grant universities serving underserved communities.

The original cosponsors for this bill include Reps. Jennifer McClellan (VA-04), Terri Sewell (AL-07), Valerie Foushee (NC-04), Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02), Hank Johnson (GA-04), Glenn Ivey (MD-04), Robin Kelly (IL-02), Cleo Fields (LA-04), David Scott (GA-13), and Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37).

Rep. Jimmy Gomez Discloses Diabetes Diagnosis For The First Time During Heated Debate On ACA Tax Credits

WASHINGTON, DC — During a House Ways and Means Committee markup, Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) delivered a powerful statement in support of an amendment offered by Rep. Steven Horsford (NV-04) to extend the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced advanced premium tax credits — which have helped millions of Americans afford their health insurance. In his remarks, Rep. Gomez shared deeply personal stories of growing up without health insurance, and for the first time publicly disclosed his own diagnosis of type 2 diabetes from earlier this year.

Earlier in the year—I haven’t told this to many people publicly—but I was diagnosed with type two diabetes,” said Rep. Gomez. “It’s just something that runs in my family. And what I had to do is […] get it under control. Insulin […] metformin […] then Jardiance. That just by itself, with insurance, costs $120 for a 90-day supply. I’m fortunate that I have a job with health care. But if you take away these subsidies, there are people that are not going to be able to get their diabetes medicine.”

The Republican tax bill currently allows the enhanced ACA tax credits to expire, raising costs for working families across the country. Despite Democrats’ efforts to protect these tax credits, Republicans voted to block the Horsford amendment. Rep. Gomez stressed that without these tax credits, basic medication would become unaffordable for many families:, “Your ‘less is more’ is going to cost people their lives. It’s going to make them sicker. I wish you would take that same logic—‘less is more’—and apply it to the tax breaks that you’re giving to the billionaires and the ultra-wealthy in this country. Tell them ‘Less is more.’ We’re going to give you less breaks so we can give more to everybody else. But you won’t do that. That’s why this whole committee is a fraud.”

Gomez to Republicans: “Are you for the babies—or the billionaires?”

Watch Rep. Jimmy Gomez’s remarks blasting the “biggest wealth transfer in American history” HERE.

WASHINGTON, DC – During a House Ways and Means Committee markup, Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) delivered a sharp rebuke of the Republican tax plan, which slashes Medicaid and food assistance programs to finance trillions of dollars in tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy.

“I didn’t think that Republicans could get any worse. But they are. At this very moment… the American people are a witness to the biggest transfer of wealth in the history of our country,” said Rep. Gomez.

In the Energy and Commerce Committee, just down the hall, Republicans will vote to slash billions from Medicaid—health care for the working class—in order to hand out trillions in tax breaks to the billionaires, ultra-wealthy, and the largest corporations. It’s literally stealing from the poor to give to the rich,” added the Congressman.

Rep. Gomez outlined the real-world consequences of the proposed cuts, warning that they would fall hardest on the most vulnerable. He also called out what’s missing from the Republican plan: any meaningful effort to lower the cost of child care, provide paid family leave, or make housing more affordable. “We could be doing all of that right now. But this bill does none of it,” Rep. Gomez said.

Rep. Gomez wrapped up his remarks forcing his Republican colleagues to reckon with the stakes of their vote. In a series of pointed questions, he laid bare the moral choice at the heart of the debate: “Are you for the babies or the billionaires? The seniors or the billionaires? The working man or woman trying to get by—or the billionaires? Your words are cheap. It’s your vote that matters.

REP. HILL’S BILL TO PRESERVE MORE OF ARKANSAS’S NATURAL BEAUTY PASSES THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman French Hill (AR-02)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. French Hill’s (AR-02) bill, H.R. 1612, the Flatside Wilderness Additions Act, to expand the Flatside Wilderness Area in central Arkansas by approximately 2,200 acres, passed the House of Representatives by a voice vote.

Rep. Hill’s bill designates an additional 2,200 acres as part of the Flatside Wilderness Area, fulfilling the vision Arkansas leaders first set forth in the 1984 Arkansas Wilderness Act. It marks the culmination of Rep. Hill’s determined effort to complete the Flatside Wilderness footprint and reflects a decades-long, bipartisan commitment to conserving one of The Natural State’s most treasured landscapes for future generations.

Rep. Hill said, “For over 40 years, Arkansas leaders have worked to secure the future of the Flatside Wilderness. My legislation completes that vision. It maintains what is best about The Natural State and conserves a place of cultural, ecological, and personal significance for Arkansans and visitors alike.”

“My bill reflects a thoughtful approach that balances conservation with access and ensures this extraordinary landscape remains available for generations to come. I am proud to complete what former Sen. Dale Bumpers and my predecessor, Rep. Ed Bethune, started four decades ago, and I am grateful for the strong support from Governor Sanders and local leaders, as well as for Chairman Westerman’s help in getting this bill to the House Floor.”

Rep. Hill’s leadership in preserving the Flatside Wilderness Area reflects a decade-long effort to expand and protect one of Arkansas’s most scenic and ecologically significant landscapes. In 2019, he successfully passed legislation to add 640 acres to the Flatside Wilderness, which was signed into law by President Trump. That same year, Congress directed the U.S. Forest Service to study surrounding lands for potential inclusion. The recommendations from that study form the basis for today’s legislation.

The Flatside Wilderness Area is part of the larger Ouachita National Forest, the oldest and largest national forest in the South, stretching across central Arkansas into eastern Oklahoma. Known for its rugged terrain and iconic views, the area is a popular destination for hikers, hunters, wildlife enthusiasts, and families across the region.

The bill has received broad support from Arkansas leaders, including Governor Sarah Sanders, the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, and local officials and outdoor recreation advocates throughout the region.

Governor Sanders said, “I am proud to support Rep. French Hill and his bill to expand and complete the Flatside Wilderness Area in our state. This legislation complements the Natural State Initiative my administration established to make Arkansas a leading destination for year-round outdoor adventure, growing our tourism industry, getting families off screens and outdoors, and preserving our world-class natural beauty.”

Chris Racey, interim director for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, said, “There are twelve wilderness areas in Arkansas that Arkansas Game and Fish Commission partners to bring these unique natural areas to Arkansans for recreation. Thank you to Congressman Hill for his work to further expand the wild lands of Flatside Wilderness.”

Anders Reynolds, federal legislative director for the Southern Environmental Law Center, said, “The Flatside Wilderness Additions Act would bolster an already strong outdoor recreation economy in The Natural State and preserve for future generations some of the Ouachita National Forest’s most rugged places. SELC applauds Representative Hill’s leadership on this bill, and joins countless hikers, hunters, campers, and paddlers in celebrating its passage through the House of Representatives today.”

Barry Hyde, Pulaski County judge, said, “I fully support H.R. 1612, the Flatside Wilderness Additions Act. This legislation safeguards one of our region’s most treasured natural areas while providing meaningful benefits to the people of Pulaski County. Expanding the Flatside Wilderness will enhance access to outdoor recreation, attract tourism, and contribute to the well-being of our residents — all while preserving the scenic beauty and ecological integrity of the Ouachita Mountains. I commend Rep. French Hill and our congressional delegation for their leadership in protecting these irreplaceable public lands for future generations.”

Larry Blackmon, Perry County judge, said, “The Flatside Wilderness Area is truly a treasure to the state of Arkansas and Perry County. Its natural beauty draws visitors from all over the United States. The citizens of Perry County are very appreciative of Congressman Hill’s efforts to expand the Flatside Wilderness Area and hope you will show your support for H.R. 1612 and allow the Flatside Wilderness Area to become an even greater beauty than it already is.”

Brian Thompson, president of the Ozark Society, said, “These Flatside additions will make a good wilderness even better, by including Cedar Creek Watershed lands, and by securing long-term protection for spectacular views from Flatside Pinnacle.”

Jill Gottesman, southeastern states director for The Wilderness Society, said, “TWS applauds the introduction of Congressman Hill’s Flatside Wilderness Additions Act to expand the existing Flatside Wilderness Area in the Ouachita National Forest. This expansion will improve the protection, restoration and manageability of the wilderness area. The bill supports Arkansas’ rich biodiversity, strengthens the growing outdoor recreation economy, and enhances rugged outdoor experiences for hikers, hunters, campers and other public land users.”

Congressman Valadao Celebrates Passage of Bill to Help Prevent Deadly Wildfires

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman David G Valadao (CA-21)

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman David Valadao (CA-22) released the following statement upon passage of the bipartisan Fire Safe Electrical Corridors Act in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Valadao joined Reps. Salud Carbajal (CA-24), Jim Costa (CA-21) and Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01) to re-introduce this bill which would allow the U.S. Forest Service to approve the removal of hazardous trees near power lines on federal forest lands without requiring a timber sale. This eases a serious threat that has been a major cause of destructive wildfires in the past.

“California is no stranger to destructive wildfires, and in the Central Valley, we live with the consequences,” said Congressman Valadao. “Far too often, bureaucratic red tape gets in the way of proper forest management, and it directly impacts air quality in the Valley. It shouldn’t be so hard to remove the dead trees we know make fires worse, and I’m glad to see this commonsense step toward reducing wildfire risk cross the finish line in the House.”

“The Western United States continues to experience catastrophic wildfires, and we need common-sense solutions that balance sustainable forest management practices with reducing wildfire risks,” said Rep. Carbajal. “My bipartisan bill strives to find this balance and is a common sense solution to protect our communities.”

“As our communities continue to recover from devastating wildfires, the House took the right step by passing the Fire Safe Electrical Corridors Act to help prevent future disasters,” said Rep. Costa. “This legislation will cut red tape, streamline the removal of hazardous vegetation near power lines, and strengthen our infrastructure to better protect homes and businesses.”

“As Co-Chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, I’ve worked to advance practical, prevention-first solutions to reduce wildfire risks. The House’s bipartisan passage of the Fire Safe Electrical Corridors Act is a meaningful step forward—cutting through red tape to allow for the safe removal of hazardous vegetation near power lines on federal lands. This commonsense measure will help protect lives, support our firefighters, and make our communities more resilient in the face of growing wildfire threats,” said Rep. Fitzpatrick.

Background:

Currently, utility companies are required to keep trees and branches away from power lines on federal lands. But fallen or dead trees cannot be cleared currently without a timber sale, creating an administrative step that can slow clearing of hazardous fuel and potential wildfire triggers on federal lands.

This bill was adopted as an amendment to the bipartisan Fix Our Forests Act. The Fire Safe Electrical Corridors Act was first introduced in 2023 by California Congressmen David Valadao (CA-22), Salud Carbajal (CA-24), and Jim Costa (CA-21) and was approved by the House Natural Resources Committee unanimously in September 2024.

U.S. Senators Alex Padilla (D-CA) and Steve Daines (R-MT) led the companion bill in the Senate.

HAPPENING NOW: CASTOR DEFENDS HEALTH CARE FOR HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF TAMPA BAY NEIGHBORS

Source: United States House of Representatives – Reprepsentative Kathy Castor (FL14)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (FL-14) is standing up for her neighbors against Congressional Republicans’ and President Trump’s cruel cuts, kicking people off their health coverage, hitting families’ wallets with higher electric bills and costlier health care and much more included in their big, bad budget bill.

“Tony McLaurin is a spirited seven-year-old from Wesley Chapel, Florida – a part of the world that my colleagues Gus Bilirakis and Laurel Lee know very well – North of Tampa. He is an athletic kid. He loves to play and watch football with his father, Ronnie. Loves math and playing video games. He’s sweet and respectful. But last December, his mother noticed that Tony didn’t have the same energy, and on the morning of his football championship banquet, she took him to the emergency room, where, after several blood tests, he was diagnosed with leukemia.

“Since then, Tony has been in and out of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital for chemotherapy, where he will be undergoing treatment for the next two years. Pauline, his mom, is a fifth-grade teacher, and she had to quit her job when Tony was diagnosed.

“Now, it is a real struggle for them to pay their bills on Dad, Ronnie’s, electrician salary. When Pauline was forced to quit her job to take care of Tony, the family lost their health insurance that was tied to his mother’s teaching employer. But thankfully, St. Joe’s helped them enroll in Medicaid, which covers the whole family and helps provide all the chemotherapy that they need. Pauline feels hopeless, scared, and uneasy about the prospect of losing Medicaid. She said, ‘It’s not like I have a second option. Medicaid is the second option.’

“Medicaid insures one out of every three children diagnosed with cancer in the United States, and without consistent Medicaid coverage, some children with cancer likely will die. Even a gap in coverage or costly red tape requirements will cost lives. Studies have shown that children who experience interruptions to health coverage before or during their cancer diagnosis are less likely to survive.

“There is a new worry, though, for Pauline and Tony and the family, because the priority of the President and Republicans in Congress is to give a massive tax giveaway to Elon Musk and billionaires that’s going to be paid for with Medicaid cuts. It’s outrageous, and at a time of so much uncertainty driven by what the President has done and Elon Musk’s heartless actions. When the cost of living is so high, when cancer research is under attack, the last thing a parent with a child diagnosed with cancer needs is to worry about affordable health care.

“Musk already torpedoed a bipartisan piece of legislation at the end of the year that would have helped children diagnosed with cancer by speeding the development of new drugs and treatments. Do he and all his billionaire buddies really need more in their bank accounts, while kids and the vulnerable and families across this country must deal with them ripping coverage away? Let’s not be the Committee that makes it more difficult for our neighbors to get medical care for children battling cancer, forcing them to make an impossible choice between paying for treatment, food, utility bills or housing. The bill before us today is heartless, cruel, and costly, and I will not stand for it. Let’s be the Committee that supports Pauline, Tony, and their entire family—affordable, consistent health coverage is the least we can do for a family going through such an unthinkable hardship.”

There are approximately 432,000 children who rely on Medicaid and CHIP in the Tampa Bay area – children with complex medical conditions like cancer, children who need school-based services, military-connected children, and children who just need to visit their pediatrician. Medicaid is their lifeline.
