Rep. Jimmy Gomez Condemns Republican Tax Bill Provision Allowing Trump To Target Nonprofits

Washington, May 16, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) released the following statement regarding the provision House Republicans included in their tax bill to let President Trump revoke tax-exempt status from charities and nonprofits — without due process:

Hidden deep in the Republican tax bill is one of the worst provisions I’ve ever seen: it would allow Donald Trump to weaponize the IRS and punish nonprofits he doesn’t like. That’s a direct hit on reproductive rights, climate, veterans’ services, and civic organizations across the country — just to name a few. I’ll be voting against this authoritarian nonsense if this bill reaches the House floor.”

House Republicans advanced the tax bill through the House Ways and Means Committee after rejecting every Democratic amendment — including Rep. Gomez’s proposals to ensure billionaires pay their fair share, support paid leave, protect health care coverage for working moms and kids, and make housing more affordable. The bill includes sweeping tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy while slashing Medicaid and food assistance for working families. It could reach the House floor as soon as next week.

Griffith Actions to Honor, Support Law Enforcement During National Police Week

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA)

The United States of America celebrates May 11, 2025, through May 17, 2025, as National Police Week. The U.S. House of Representatives voted on three measures during National Police Week to help law enforcement:

  • H.R. 2240 – Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act. Directs the U.S. Department of Justice to gather data on violent attacks against law enforcement officers.
  • H.R. 2243 – LEOSA Reform Act. Improves the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act and extends concealed carry privileges to qualified law enforcement officers.
  • H.R. 2255 – Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act. Allows current federal law enforcement officers in good standing to purchase a retired weapon at market value from a federal agency.

U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) voted in favor of all three measures.

On Thursday, May 15, Congressman Griffith attended the 44th Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The ceremony honored the country’s fallen law enforcement officers. During the ceremony, Vice President J.D. Vance delivered remarks. Second Lady Usha Vance, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Border Czar Tom Homan also attended the Service.

The Service featured a roll call of the 147 fallen police officers who perished in the last year, including Smyth County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Hunter Reedy. In August of 2024, Deputy Reedy was killed by gunfire and his partner, Deputy Michael Fedorchuk, was injured. Deputy Reedy’s family participated in the Service while Smyth County Sheriff “Chip” Shuler and some of Deputy Reedy’s colleagues were in attendance.

Following the week of DC activities, Congressman Griffith issued the following statement:

“Many Virginia communities are equipped with safe streets and peaceful neighborhoods thanks to the firm support and care of our law enforcement officers. I will continue to ‘back the blue’, fight against efforts to defund the police and honor the courageous service of our law enforcement. My heart and prayers go out to the family of Deputy Reedy, the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office and the greater law enforcement community of Southwest, Southside and Central Virginia. The emotional service at the Capitol demonstrates America’s rich culture in celebrating the contributions and sacrifices of law enforcement.”

BACKGROUND

Congressman Griffith submitted into the Congressional Record an Extension of Remarks honoring the courageous service of Deputy Hunter Reedy.

Congressman Griffith also requested a flag be flown over the U.S. Capitol.

Congressman Griffith presented Deputy Reedy’s family with a printed copy of the Congressional Record and the flag during a ceremony at the Southwest Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy.

Headline: Newhouse, Subramanyam Lead Bipartisan Legislation Supporting Agritourism

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) and Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) introduced the bipartisan Accelerating the Growth of Rural Innovation and Tourism Opportunities to Uphold Rural Industries and Sustainable Marketplaces (AGRITOURISM) Act to create an Office of Agritourism at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

“Agritourism is a huge industry in Central Washington, with world-class breweries, wineries, and farmers markets attracting thousands of visitors every year,” said Rep. Newhouse. “This legislation gives our local agritourism industries a voice in D.C. and elevates the challenges, and successes, of the industry to the federal level. I commend Rep. Subramanyam for spearheading this effort in support of our local economies.”

“Agritourism is a booming industry and critical to our local economy,” said Rep. Subramanyam. “Farmers across Virginia would benefit from streamlined access to resources, which is why I’m introducing the AGRITOURISM Act to establish a dedicated Office of Agritourism within the U.S. Department of Agriculture to make sure that our local farmers and ranchers have everything they need to be successful.”

The legislation is supported by the Wine Institute, WineAmerica, the Brewers Association, and the American Craft Spirits Association.

The office will represent the interests of agritourism businesses in federal policymaking and consolidate federal resources to sustain agritourism businesses, such as loans, grants, and broadband connectivity programs.

Agritourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the country and has become the lifeblood of many rural local economies. Between 2002 and 2022, income from agritourism businesses rose from $202 million to $1.2 billion.

Rep. Doggett on Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” Failure

Washington, D.C.—Today, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), a member of the House Budget and Ways and Means Committees, released the following statement after Republicans failed to advance their own budget reconciliation bill:

“Even some Republicans realized that Trump’s ‘one big beautiful bill’ is an ugly lie atop a mountain of lies and dangerous trillions of additional national debt. Republicans will be back with another scheme next week, and House Democrats will be ready to fight.

“Limiting this bill’s benefits to 98% of Americans and denying them to Elon Musk and the 2% richest would cut this bill’s cost in half and protect the healthcare of millions, which Republicans would otherwise deny.”

Kaptur, DeLauro Condemn Trump’s Politicization of Critical Army Corps Construction

Newly Released Army Corps Work Plans Show Trump Abandoning Blue State Infrastructure Projects

Washington, DC — This week, the Trump Administration released its Army Corps work plans that show President Trump is politicizing critical infrastructure investments.

House Appropriations Committee analysis shows that the Trump administration shifted more than $250 Million away from critical infrastructure construction projects in Democratic-led states, particularly Washington and California, to Republican-led states. This includes the complete elimination of Army Corps construction funding for states like California. This move risks delaying critical safety projects across the country.

House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Ranking Member Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), and House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) condemned this corrupt move.

“President Trump is blatantly playing politics with critical Army Corps construction investments and punishing the American people for the way their states have voted,” said Representatives Kaptur and DeLauro. “Rushing water from collapsed dams and floods caused by failed infrastructure do not know state borders, nor do they have political leanings. The damage, lives lost, and economic outcomes impact all Americans, which is why the federal government makes these investments in the first place. The Trump administration should follow Congress’s intent to guide its investments. Instead, President Trump has unilaterally chosen to punish the people living in certain states — a historic and clear abuse of taxpayer dollars. This is the exact scenario we feared when House Republicans introduced their slush fund 2025 funding bill, which failed to reflect both Republican and Democratic priorities. It does not matter who is in the White House, people across the country are harmed when all the power Congress holds to represent the people in their states and districts is handed to the President.”

The Republican fiscal year 2025 full-year continuing resolution cut Corps of Engineers’ Civil Works Construction by $1.4 Billion or 44 percent, and it also gave all discretion to the Trump administration to prioritize projects among over 1,000 throughout the country that should be directed by Congress. Army Corps of Engineers projects keep commerce safely flowing on our waterways, manage flood risk, and restore ecosystems. The Army Corps’ work plan can be found here.

Krishnamoorthi and Moulton Lead More Than 100 Democrats in Opposing Cuts to 988’s Specialized Services for LGBTQ+ Youth

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (8th District of Illinois)

WASHINGTON Today, Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) and Seth Moulton (D-MA) joined in leading 107 House Democrats in calling on Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. and President Donald Trump to scrap plans that would cut funding for the specialized services for LGBTQ+ youth who contact the 988 National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

“America has a youth mental health crisis, and LGBTQ+ youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers,” the congressmen wrote in their letter. “The 988 hotline for LGBTQ+ youth has recently received an average of 2,100 contacts per day, and since 2022, it has received over 1.3 million calls, texts, and chats. America’s mental health crisis affects every community, and every family knows someone who has experienced distress. Mental health crises do not recognize partisan differences, and this is why support for 988 and its specialized services has always been firmly bipartisan.”

The specialized services 988 offers, particularly for high-risk groups like LGBTQ+ youth and veterans, are critical to saving lives. Any proposal to cut funding in the President’s budget and thereby cut off access to this life-saving support for vulnerable young people run counter to the best practices in suicide prevention.

“Cutting off specialized 988 services for LGBTQ+ youth in crisis is not just wrong, it’s dangerous,” Congressman Krishnamoorthi said. “LGBTQI+ youth already face a heightened risk of suicide, and removing tailored support could have deadly consequences. Every American, regardless of who they are or whom they love, deserves access to compassionate, life-saving mental health care, especially in moments of deepest distress.”

“Suicide remains a serious public health concern in the U.S., and we know from research that certain groups have higher risk, including Veterans and LGBTQ+ youth. This is why these groups have dedicated services within the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, where uniquely trained counselors help prevent suicide in these disproportionately impacted populations,” Robert Gebbia, CEO of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said. “We understand that funding may be eliminated for 988 LGBTQ+ specialized services, and we urge the administration to continue its existing support for crisis services, including those for at-risk LGBTQ+ youth. These crisis response services are effective and save young lives.”

“I am deeply grateful to these members of Congress for speaking out and urging the administration to reverse course on their proposal to end life-saving suicide prevention services for LGBTQ+ youth across the U.S. Tailoring suicide prevention services to ensure they’re effective for the most at-risk groups should not be political; it is simply clinical best practice. I applaud these lawmakers for their vocal support of these evidence-backed, bipartisan crisis services that have already supported an estimated 1.3 million LGBTQ+ youth and counting,” Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project, said.

“988 is about providing hope and saving lives. Tragically, we lose too many young lives to suicide, especially LGBTQ+ young people,” Hannah Wesolowski, Chief Advocacy Officer of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, said. “We thank these members of Congress for prioritizing resources for people who need them, and for working to maintain these services to provide vital, lifesaving support to our LGBTQ+ community.”

The full text of the letter can be found here and below.

Dear Secretary Kennedy,

President Trump’s budget threatens to end specialized services for LGBTQ+ youth who contact 988, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Ending this mental health support for youth in distress would devastate a vital resource for some of our nation’s most vulnerable young people. This shortsighted and dangerous plan undermines 988’s ability to provide tailored support for a population with a higher risk of suicide and will have lethal consequences if enacted. Surely you can agree that every American deserves the resources necessary to prevent suicide and self-injury, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

America has a youth mental health crisis, and LGBTQ+ youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers. The 988 hotline for LGBTQ+ youth has recently received an average of 2,100 contacts per day and, since 2022, it has received over 1.3 million calls, text, and chats. America’s mental health crisis affects every community and every family knows someone who has experienced distress. Mental health crises do not recognize partisan differences, and this is why support for 988 and its specialized services has always been firmly bipartisan.

When Congress established the 988 lifeline, signed into law by President Trump during his first term, we intended it to be a resource for any American experiencing mental distress. To a young person feeling alone and scared, 988 is truly a lifeline. The specialized services it is able to provide to individuals with a higher risk of suicidality, such as LGBTQ+ youth and veterans, are especially vital to provide high-risk groups with custom support. Consideration of cutting off this life-saving resource to vulnerable youth and young adults goes against best practices in suicide prevention.

We urge that you scrap this ill-advised plan. Our nation’s children deserve nothing less.
