Congressman Allen Hosts Signing Day Ceremony for Georgia-12 Service Academy Appointees

Today, Congressman Rick W. Allen (GA-12) hosted a special signing day ceremony for students in Georgia’s 12th District who have been accepted into one of the nation’s military service academies.

These academies include: The United States Military Academy (USMA) in West Point, New York; the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Maryland; the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in New London, Connecticut; the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, New York; and the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

During the event, Congressman Allen recognized several Georgia-12 students whose respective service academy nominations he sponsored. Congressman Allen also presented each student with a signed copy of the Congressional Record marking the occasion.

Delegation Urges President Trump to Approve Request for Major Disaster Declaration in Ohio and Marion Counties

Washington, D.C. – This afternoon, the West Virginia congressional delegation urged President Trump to approve the state’s request for a major disaster declaration following the weekend floods in Ohio and Marion Counties.

The delegation’s letter follows Governor Patrick Morrisey’s formal request to the White House for a major disaster declaration earlier today.

Congressman Moore issued the following statement:

“My heart breaks for our neighbors who are left picking up the pieces after last weekend’s unprecedented floods. I’ve never seen anything like the devastation I saw in Triadelphia and Fairmont.

“Even during these trying times, West Virginians are pulling together to rebuild our communities. But, we can’t do it alone. I urge President Trump to consider the unprecedented nature of this flood and quickly approve West Virginia’s Major Disaster Declaration request to ensure our people have access to the federal resources they need to recover and rebuild.”

Earlier this week, Congressman Moore spent time in Triadelphia and Fairmont to review the damage and speak with state and local officials on the ground.

Rep. Mike Levin Introduces Bipartisan Legislation to Support Access to Affordable Military Housing

Washington, D.C.—Today, Reps. Mike Levin (CA-49) and Jen Kiggans (VA-02) introduced the bipartisan Service Member Housing Relief Act, which would give the Secretary of Defense greater flexibility to respond to cost-of-living spikes in Military Housing Areas (MHAs) nationwide. This would help service members afford to live in San Diego and Orange counties.

In recent years, the Secretary of Defense has been temporarily authorized to increase the basic allowance for housing (BAH) where cost of living rises more than 20% over the previous year. Yet, service members and their families continue to report significant cost-of-living spikes at their assigned duty stations around the country, often with some costs rising more quickly and frequently than BAH can account for.

The bill would reduce the threshold for granting mid-year temporary BAH increases from 20% to 15% of the overall increase in cost of living from the previous year. It also makes the Secretary of Defense’s authority permanent. In effect, the bill would give service members and their families more affordable and accessible housing options to avoid excessively long commutes, potentially hazardous living conditions, and ultimately better fit their needs.

“This bipartisan bill addresses housing affordability issues facing service members across the country, including those stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton,” said Rep. Levin. “It increases the resources available to pay for housing and expands military housing options to ensure service members and their families are able to live and work in close proximity. I look forward to pushing this bill through the legislative process and garnering more bipartisan support for our men and women in uniform.”

“As a Navy veteran, I know firsthand how critical stable, affordable housing is to our military families’ quality of life and mission readiness,” said Rep. Kiggans. “The Service Member Housing Relief Act is a commonsense, bipartisan solution to address the rising cost of living in many military communities. By lowering the threshold for BAH adjustments and making DoD’s authority permanent, we can ensure our servicemembers aren’t forced to choose between safe housing and supporting their families. I’m proud to support this bill because our military families deserve better—and we owe them nothing less.”

“MFAN’s research—alongside data from the Department of Defense and other leading organizations—consistently demonstrates that the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) falls short in many housing markets across the country,” said Shannon Razsadin, CEO of the Military Family Advisory Network (MFAN). “In fact, our 2023 Military Family Support Programming Survey found that 52.5% of active-duty families spent more than $250 out-of-pocket each month beyond their housing allowance. The data makes clear: housing insecurity is directly linked to broader challenges, including food insecurity, mental health, retention, and propensity to recommend military service. We applaud this bipartisan initiative. Military families don’t get to choose when or where they move—those decisions are made for them in service to our country. The very least we can do is ensure their compensation keeps pace with the real costs of providing a safe place for their family to call home.”

Rep. Mike Levin’s Statement on the Supreme Court’s Spent Nuclear Fuel Ruling

Washington, D.C.–Today, Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49) released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in NRC v. Texas, which concerned the temporary storage of spent nuclear fuel:

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling on the issue of spent nuclear fuel underscores the need for Congressional action. While I appreciate the Court’s decision to uphold the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s authority to license storage facilities, this decision is not sufficient to advance efforts addressing the broader societal challenges of spent nuclear fuel.

“As the current Administration seeks to unleash a nuclear renaissance, there remains no solution the back end of the fuel cycle—both existing and future. With or without the Administration’s efforts, our nation already has 90,000 metric tons and growing of spent nuclear fuel with no permanent management plan.

“Congress must act to pave the way for the successful siting and community acceptance of storage and disposal facilities. We must end a top-down approach to spent nuclear fuel and pass legislation – like my bipartisan Nuclear Waste Administration Act – to empower negotiations between all levels of government. I will not stop until the job is done.”

Carbajal, Bacon Introduce Bipartisan Bill Package to Improve Public Safety

U.S. Representatives Salud Carbajal (D-CA-24) and Don Bacon (R-NE-02) introduced a pair of bipartisan bills, the H.R. 4024, Filling Public Safety Vacancies Act and H.R. 4022, Increasing Behavioral Health Treatment Act, to improve public safety nationwide. This package aims to address the staffing shortages at local law enforcement departments and removes the limitations on the provision of Medicaid funding for patients in an institution for mental disease (IMD) in order to improve behavioral health.

“The Filling Public Safety Vacancies Act and Increasing Behavioral Health Treatment Act are bipartisan commitments to strengthening our communities by addressing critical law enforcement staffing shortages and expanding access to behavioral health care,” said Rep. Carbajal. “By investing in these essential resources, we are ensuring that local communities have the support they need to safeguard people’s both physical safety and mental well-being.” 

“Law enforcement staffing shortages and lack of access to behavioral healthcare are negatively impacting our communities and these two bipartisan bills will help address those gaps,” said Rep. Bacon. “We can provide peace of mind to communities by supporting these resources.”

The Filling Public Safety Vacancies Act aims to help local police departments mitigate staffing shortages. The legislation also provides an emergency boost to the federal grant program that provides funding to departments for recruitment and hiring. The bipartisan bill has a Senate companion led by Senators Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).

With an infusion of an additional $162 million for the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program, the bill would double the amount of federal grant funding available for local departments this fiscal year.

The bipartisan bill also establishes a new vetting requirement for officers hired using the supplemental funding provided in the bill, creating the first-ever statutory requirement for background checks and mental health evaluations. Currently, federal law does not require agencies to perform background checks on new recruits through the COPS Hiring Program.

The Filling Public Safety Vacancies Act has the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police, Major County Sheriffs of America, and the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), California’s largest law enforcement organization.

“Policing staff shortages are a nationwide problem and law enforcement agencies are struggling to retain good veteran officers and to find the best and brightest candidates to protect their communities.  This legislation provides a needed one-time boost of $162 million for the hiring program administered by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). The additional funds can be used to hire or rehire law enforcement officers as well as pay for the required background checks and psychological examinations.  We are grateful to have Representatives Carbajal and Bacon lead this important effort,” said Patrick Yoes, National President of the Fraternal Order of Police.

“The City of Santa Barbara appreciates our Congressman’s deep understanding of the behavioral health system and how to increase access to critical treatment and services while ensuring that the approach to such services are holistic and community-centered. As a City that has made significant investments in coordinated community crisis response through our Police Department’s Co-Response Team as well as accessibility to mental health services through our downtown daytime navigation center, we feel strongly that this legislation will create more pathways for positive client outcomes and increase overall public health, safety and well-being,” said Kelly Gordon, City of Santa Barbara Police Chief.

The Increasing Behavioral Health Treatment Act would remove the Medicaid Institutions for Mental Disease (IMD) payment prohibition for states that have submitted a plan to: increase access to outpatient and community-based behavioral health care; increase availability of crisis stabilization services; and improve data sharing and coordination between physical health, mental health and addiction treatment providers, and first-responders.

Increasing Behavioral Health Treatment Act is endorsed by County of Ventura, County of Santa Barbara, Ventura County District Attorney, Ventura County Sheriff, Santa Barbara County Sheriff, Santa Barbara Police Department, Behavioral Health and Wellness, California State Association of Counties, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), National Association of Counties (NACo), National Association of County Behavioral Health and Developmental Disability Directors, Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), and Major County Sheriffs of America.

Rep. Weber Joins Push to Bring the Discovery Space Shuttle to Houston

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Randy Weber (TX-14) joined Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) to bring the Space Shuttle Discovery home to Texas. Together, they are calling for the shuttle to be relocated from its current location in Virginia to NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, the rightful home of human spaceflight. This morning, Rep. Weber and Sen. Cornyn met with a former space shuttle astronaut, key figures in the aerospace industry, and the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership at Space Center Houston. Following the meeting, Rep. Weber announced he is introducing the House companion of Sen. Cornyn’s Bring the Shuttle Home Act.

“Our community has always been proud to stand at the forefront of space exploration and innovation. Now, we’re fighting to bring the Space Shuttle Discovery back to Houston, where it truly belongs,” said Rep. Weber. “Those of us who’ve been in this battle from the beginning still remember the sting of the Obama administration’s misguided decision to snub Houston, the home of Mission Control and the beating heart of America’s space program, in favor of locations with far less connection to NASA’s legacy. It’s time to correct the record and return Discovery to its rightful home at Johnson Space Center, where it can continue to inspire generations of future astronauts, engineers, and explorers.”

Background:

More than a decade ago, Houston, America’s hub for human spaceflight, was unjustly passed over for one of the retiring space shuttle orbiters due to a politically motivated decision by the Obama Administration. Despite Houston’s central role in our nation’s space legacy, the shuttles were sent elsewhere. Discovery remains the only shuttle still owned by the federal government and eligible for transfer. Bringing it to Houston will not only honor our city’s unmatched contributions to space exploration, it will also serve to educate and inspire the next generation of astronauts, scientists, and pioneers.

SARASOTA – U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R‑Fla.) today released the latest installment in the Veterans History Project Series, honoring the service and sacrifice of veterans from Florida’s 17th District. The interview features Private First Class David Endean, a Vietnam War veteran who served in the U.S. Army from September 25, 1968, to September 25, 1970.
“Private First Class David Endean’s service during the Vietnam War is a testament to the courage, perseverance, and camaraderie of our men and women in uniform,” said Rep. Steube. “Through intense combat and heartbreaking loss, his reflections are a moving account of a soldier’s experiences in war. We are honored that he shared his journey so that his fellow citizens may pay tribute to his legacy. Sadly, not all who served in Vietnam were met with the respect and care they deserved when they returned home. PFC Endean’s story reminds us why honoring and preserving the history of our veterans is so important.”
In his interview, Endean reflects on the physical and emotional toll of combat, the lasting brotherhood forged with fellow soldiers, and the challenges of returning to a country that didn’t always understand or appreciate their service. “Try going to work one day and carry a 70-pound backpack,” said Endean.“Now imagine walking around with it all day, knowing at any moment you could step on a booby trap or be ambushed. Try doing that for a year. That was our life.”
He also shares how his service deepened his faith and taught him lifelong lessons in discipline, respect, and commitment—values that carried over into his civilian life and career in electrical engineering.

LOS ANGELES – Today, Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34), whose district includes the Dodger Stadium, called on the Los Angeles Dodgers to publicly stand with the immigrant community as ICE raids continue across the city:

“In a city where nearly 36 percent of the residents are immigrants and nearly 40 percent of the team’s fan base is Latino, saying nothing is not just disappointing — it’s a betrayal and an insult.

“Other teams, like Angel City FC and LAFC, have spoken out. So why haven’t they?

“If the Dodgers are unsure where they stand, they need only look around the stadium on any game day at the multigenerational Latino families who have stood by this team for decades, proudly wearing Dodger blue.

“I’m calling on the Dodgers and all LA sports teams to unequivocally state their support for our immigrant community and the people of Los Angeles. Silence is not an option, it’s a choice.”
