WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement:

“Our service members executed a dangerous mission and I’m relieved they have returned safely. The first priority is to ensure our service members and all Americans are safe from any potential retaliatory attacks by the Iranian regime and the terrorist organizations that they fund. 

“While I strongly support the goal of preventing the Iranian regime from ever getting nuclear weapons, I believe military strikes ordered by President Trump on Iran need congressional authorization. From my first term in Congress until the present, I have consistently believed the Constitution means what it says: only Congress has the power to declare war. I publicly stated at the time that President Obama needed congressional authorization before striking Syria. My position that only Congress has the power to declare war has remained the same regardless of which party the President happens to belong to.

“A world with fewer nuclear weapons is a safer one for everyone. The autocratic and theocratic Iranian regime—if it had nuclear weapons—could launch those weapons of mass destruction at U.S. military bases, other U.S. interests, and Israel. Preventing the Iranian regime from getting nuclear weapons has been a longstanding, bipartisan goal. 

“There will be a bipartisan, classified briefing by the Administration this Tuesday. I urge the Administration to address what congressional authorization it relied on for the military strikes, if any. I also want the Administration to address many unanswered questions, such as if the strikes achieved their intended objectives, how the Administration intends to protect Americans and our service members from potential future attacks, and what the Administration’s plan is going forward.”

CONGRESSWOMAN PLASKETT PRESENTS U.S. FLAG TO RAYMOND WILLIAMS AND FAMILY IN HONOR OF DECADES OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands – This week, Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett presented a U.S. flag that flew over the United States Capitol to Raymond Williams of Grove Place, and his family in recognition of their extraordinary dedication to preserving Virgin Islands history and culture through their work with the Grove Place Action Committee. While the Congresswoman originally intended to present it to the family during the 2024 Liberty Day ceremony, the event’s cancellation due to inclement weather led to her presenting it to the Williams’ family this week.

The presentation ceremony honored Mr. Williams’ tireless efforts in organizing and promoting Liberty Day and D. Hamilton Jackson Day celebrations, events that have become cornerstones of Virgin Islands cultural heritage and historical remembrance.

“Raymond and the Williams family embody the spirit of service and cultural preservation that makes our Virgin Islands community so special,” said Congresswoman Plaskett. “His family’s work with the Grove Place Action Committee ensure that the stories and struggles of our ancestors, particularly the legacy of D. Hamilton Jackson, will never be forgotten. This flag represents not just the gratitude of Congress, but the appreciation of an entire community that benefited from his and his family’s dedication.”

Mr. Williams and his family have devoted many years to organizing Liberty Day observances and celebrations, honoring D. Hamilton Jackson, the labor leader and newspaper publisher who fought for workers’ rights and press freedom in the early 20th century Virgin Islands.

The U.S. flag presented to Raymond Williams and his family flew over the Capitol on November 1, 2o24—recognized as Liberty Day in the Virgin Islands—at the request of Congresswoman Plaskett and honors D. Hamilton Jackson’s contribution to the freedom of the press in the Danish West Indies and the Virgin Islands’ continued quest for self-determination. The presentation reflects Congress’s acknowledgment of the vital role that community leaders like Mr. Williams and his family play in preserving American history and culture in all corners of our nation.

“Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons is a direct threat to the safety of the United States, our allies, and the stability of the Middle East. The regime has made its intentions clear by developing its nuclear program in secret, violating international agreements, and refusing transparency with global inspectors.

“At the same time, Iran has built and sustained a violent network of terrorist proxies across the region. The regime trains, funds, and commands Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza, and the Houthis in Yemen. These groups launch attacks on civilians, American military personnel, and our regional partners. Their actions are not spontaneous. They are orchestrated by a regime that embraces terrorism as a tool of statecraft.

“The United States has responded with precision and purpose. Our forces have taken necessary action to dismantle Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and disrupt its military capabilities. These operations reflect our determination to defend American lives, protect our partners, and hold the Iranian regime accountable. But let me be clear: Congress must play a decisive role in any decision involving the deployment of American troops into harm’s way.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32), Senior Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee for 29 years, released the following statement on the United States strike against Iran’s nuclear sites:

“The attack on Fordow and other sites nearly destroyed Iran’s ability to enrich uranium in the future. But Iran already has stockpiled enough near-weapons grade uranium for about 9 bombs. Only coercive diplomacy can eliminate that immediate threat. Watch. What does Israel do, or threaten, regarding the Kharg Island oil export facility and Iran’s above-ground strategic and economic infrastructure? Does Iran threaten the Strait of Hormuz, and can the U.S. keep it open? 20% of the world’s oil goes through the Strait.

Iran’s stockpile of 60% enriched uranium probably survived and is immediately dangerous. If Iran can salvage or reconstruct even a small portion of its enrichment capacity, it can turn this stockpile into enough weapons-grade uranium for roughly 9 bombs. And even if they have no enrichment capacity, they can probably create crude bombs out of the 60% uranium, though crude bombs probably could not be delivered by missile. Only diplomacy, backed by coercion, can eliminate the threat posed by Iran’s stockpile of near weapons-grade uranium.

So how dangerous is the stockpile of 60% highly enriched uranium that Iran had yesterday and probably still retains? It’s enough for about 9 bombs when enriched to over 90%, weapons-grade. The experts I’ve consulted conclude: If Iran retains or reconstitutes 12% of its enrichment capacity, it can create enough weapons-grade uranium for a bomb every 2.5 weeks. Only coercive diplomacy can cause Iran to discourage its stockpile.”

Toledo, Ohio — Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), a senior member of the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, released the following statement. Congresswoman has demanded immediate highly secure confidential Congressional briefings of key Defense and Intelligence Committees to address the following questions related to American strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Congresswoman Kaptur is one of 44 bipartisan members of the House who are leading H.Con.Res.38 Directing the President pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution to remove United States Armed Forces from unauthorized hostilities in the Islamic Republic of Iran. 

“There was no congressional vote, no debate, nor even any discussion with Congress, with leaders of key intelligence committees reportedly left in the dark,” said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09). “This is not the way our Republic is supposed to function because that is not how our Constitution reads. I will continue to demand answers in a secure confidential Congressional briefing in the coming days. May God bless America and our people.”

(1) If not an act of war against Iran, which Constitutionally would require Congressional consent before bombs were dropped, how does President Trump define his actions against Iran? 

(2) Who — which individuals — exactly at the National Security Council, Pentagon, and Departments of Defense and State were involved in this decision?

(3) With what other nations, and which international leaders did President Trump consult before making what appears to be a lone decision?

(4) Going forward, the secretive manner in which the White House has made such a consequential, strategic, “Lone Ranger” decision puts at very serious risk American troops, US global assets, and strategic interests both abroad and at home.

(5) This decision appears to have been solely President Trump’s. The consequences that will likely flow from it, however, will attend to the American people at home and abroad and rest squarely on his shoulders alone. 

(6) Political retribution can take many forms  where religious beliefs do not accommodate compromise nor forgiveness as an accepted behavior.
