Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25), Darren Soto (FL-9), and House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory Meeks (NY-5) led 70 House Democrats in a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem demanding they immediately restore Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans following the Trump Administration’s military action in Venezuela. The letter was signed by every Democratic Member of Congress from Florida. No Republicans signed the letter.

On Saturday, January 3, 2026, the Trump Administration conducted a major military operation in Venezuela, without Congressional authorization or notification, to depose and arrest Nicolás Maduro, leading to further instability in the nation. TPS is designed to protect immigrants from nations destabilized by war, violence, or natural disasters from deportation back to unsafe conditions.

“Hundreds of thousands of lawful Venezuelan residents who benefited from TPS…are facing deportation in the coming weeks to instability, desperate poverty and danger—conditions that have become even more dangerous since President Trump ordered military strikes and special operations to remove dictator Nicolás Maduro,” the Members wrote. “Many Venezuelans are hiding out in their homes, terrified of follow-on strikes or harassment by the regime which remains in place.”

Other signers of the letter include: Reps. Amo, Balint, Barragán, Bell, Bonamici, Brown, Carson, Casten, Castor, Cherfilus-McCormick, Chu, Cisneros, Cleaver, Conaway, Crockett, Dean, DeSaulnier, Doggett, Elfreth, Escobar, Espaillat, Frankel, Frost, Robert Garcia, Sylvia Garcia, Goldman, Gottheimer, Green, Huffman, Jonathan Jackson, Julie Johnson, Kamlager-Dove, Krishnamoorthi, Larsen, Larson, Susie Lee, Lieu, Lynch, McBride, McGovern, McIver, Menendez, Meng, Moskowitz, Moulton, Nadler, Norton, Pallone, Panetta, Pingree, Pou, Pressley, Raskin, Rivas, Salinas, Scanlon, Schakowsky, Scholten, Robert Scott, Titus, Tokuda, Torres, Trahan, Vargas, Waters, Watson Coleman, and Wilson.

The complete letter can be read here and below.

Dear Secretary Rubio and Secretary Noem:

We write to urge you to immediately restore Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans following the Trump Administration’s military action in Venezuela. Conditions in the country are deeply unstable and dangerous, and the still-intact Venezuelan regime, emboldened by support from the President of the United States, has doubled down on repression and brutality since taking power.

The Trump Administration’s calamitous decision to terminate TPS for Venezuelans in January 2025 was rooted in a determination that conditions in the country had improved. This claim was baseless at the time, and, with the regime left in place, it is certainly untrue now. This termination of lawful status has caused unimaginable fear and anxiety for law-abiding Venezuelan families, who passed criminal background checks, earned work permits, and paid fees and taxes.

Hundreds of thousands of lawful Venezuelan residents who benefited from TPS are set to lose their employment authorization, which will have devastating economic consequences for essential sectors in Florida and across the country. Many are facing deportation in the coming weeks to instability, desperate poverty and danger—conditions that have become even more dangerous since President Trump ordered military strikes and special operations to remove dictator Nicolás Maduro.

This administration has not just abandoned Venezuelans in the diaspora, they have abandoned the Venezuelans that remain in Venezuela, who yearn for freedom and a democratic transition. While Maduro was captured and brought to the United States to face justice, his criminal accomplices remain in power, including de facto interim president Delcy Rodriguez, Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López, and Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello (who was indicted alongside Maduro in 2019). We are disturbed that the Administration has vocally backed these individuals, who are complicit in the worst abuses of the Venezuelan regime over the last decade, while dismissing the pro-democracy leadership of the legitimate president-elect, Edmundo González, and Nobel Peace Prize winning opposition leader María Corina Machado.

The worst fears of the Venezuelan community were confirmed as President Trump stated that Delcy Rodriguez will be empowered to “make Venezuela great again” and underscored that his objective was extracting oil resources from the country rather than ending the suffering of Venezuelans and promoting a peaceful, democratic transition of power.

In the days since the U.S. military operation commenced, which included missile and drone strikes in densely populated areas of Caracas that damaged residential buildings and injured innocent bystanders, the Venezuelan regime has enacted a new law criminalizing any expression of support for Maduro’s exit from the country. Dozens of people have been arrested and jailed, including journalists, for sending text messages or issuing social media posts related to the news. Many Venezuelans are hiding out in their homes, terrified of follow-on strikes or harassment by the regime which remains in place.

In light of these developments, we urge you to immediately rescind the revocation of TPS for Venezuelan beneficiaries and extend these critical protections for law-abiding Venezuelans who are genuinely fearful of being sent back to the same murderous regime under new management.

CASTOR STATEMENT ON HOUSE PASSAGE OF DEMOCRATS’ AFFORDABLE CARE ACT THREE-YEAR TAX CREDIT EXTENSION

House Democrats’ bipartisan bill to extend health care savings passes in the House 230-196, with only one Florida Republican voting to save health care up for millions of Florida families

Washington, January 8, 2026

Today, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (FL-14) released the following statement after voting “yes” on House of Representatives passage of Democrats’ historic bipartisan discharge petition that would extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) Tax Credits for the next three years:

“Neighbors across the Tampa Bay area who are grappling with huge health cost increases in the new year have hope for their pocketbooks and affordable care. House Democrats successfully forced a vote and were joined by seventeen Republicans to pass a three-year extension of enhanced tax credits. I appreciate the many Tampa Bay neighbors who shared their stories about the economic stability that affordable health coverage provides. Our health care system needs reform, but we cannot allow Republicans to sabotage health care for 22 million Americans in order to fund massive tax cuts for billionaires. People deserve affordable, consistent access to the care they need.

“The ACA has been a godsend for hardworking Americans since it was signed into law fifteen years ago in ending discrimination for preexisting conditions, allowing young people to stay on parents insurance until age 26, and providing true options for the self-employed. Our country and economy are stronger when Americans are healthy and can thrive.

“I am thankful to the handful of Republicans who worked in a bipartisan manner with Democrats to get this bill across the finish line.

“The Senate should immediately pass the three-year so our neighbors have greater access to more affordable health care coverage.”

LEADER JEFFRIES ON MS NOW: “WE’RE DEMANDING THAT JOHN THUNE BRING IT TO A VOTE NEXT WEEK”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District of New York)

Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries appeared on MS NOW’s All In, where he made clear that because of the leadership of House Democrats, the House passed legislation to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits that Republicans let expire on January 1 and that Senate Republicans must follow our lead and vote to lower premiums.

CHRIS HAYES: Joining me now is House Democratic Leader, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries of New York. Congressman, let’s start on that vote and I want to ask you about the situation that’s developing in Minneapolis and Portland as well. But first of all, how did it come to pass that a three-year extension of these subsidies passes the House the first week back with a Republican majority?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Well, it was a big victory for the American people. Every single House Democrat holding firm, making clear that we needed to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits to prevent tens of millions of Americans from experiencing dramatically-increased health insurance costs that would have prevented them, of course, from being able to go see a doctor when they need one. We’re talking about health insurance increases that in some instances amount to $1,000 or $2,000 per month. Unacceptable. That’s for working class Americans, middle class Americans and everyday Americans. And for months, we’ve raised the stakes on this issue and have been clear that we’ll find a bipartisan path forward on any issue when it relates to addressing the affordability crisis. But we were not going to go along to get along in terms of gutting the healthcare of the American people. And public sentiment, as Abraham Lincoln once said, is everything. With it, nothing can fail. Without it, nothing can succeed. And we were able to work with the people across the country who rose up and made clear this is something that Congress needed to get done. And in partnership with 17 House Republicans who joined us, we made progress where people thought it was otherwise impossible.

CHRIS HAYES: Just quickly to follow up on this. So where does this, I mean, is this DOA in the Senate? Is there the possibility of this actually happening in the Senate? What’s your understanding of what happens now?

LEADER JEFFRIES: It’s definitively not dead on arrival in the Senate. Leader Schumer, and every single Senate Democrat, supports our legislation, a clean three-year, straightforward extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits. In fact, in December, a majority of Senators, every single Senate Democrat and four Senate Republicans, supported this legislation. Meaning, there’s a majority that exists in the Senate right now. And we’re demanding that John Thune bring it to a vote next week. No more procedural games, no more obstacles that are erected when we know that a majority of the Senators support legislation which is supported by the overwhelming majority of the American people.

CHRIS HAYES: You are obviously in the minority in the House, but it’s a very narrow minority right now. If I’m not mistaken, I believe Marjorie Taylor Greene’s departure, outright departure from Congress, the sad and premature passing of a Republican Member of Congress at the age of 65 and another Member who I believe is incapacitated in the hospital right now means that it’s an operational one-vote majority, I believe, if i’m not mistaken?

LEADER JEFFRIES: That’s right. We’re basically looking at 217 Republicans and 213 Democrats. At the end of the month, we think we’ll be at 218 Republicans and 214 Democrats. I think what was missed from the very beginning of this Congress, Chris, was the fact that though it was a very disappointing election in 2024 and there are a lot of lessons to be learned, many of which we’ve already applied, which is why we decisively won victories across the country, including in Virginia, in New Jersey and California in November of 2025, but I think that we overperformed the national political environment, and the House was already very narrow. Republicans, to start the Congress, only had a three-seat majority, which is why they’re trying to gerrymandered maps all across the country. By the way, we’re pushing back against them aggressively, stopping them from implementing their scheme. And so, this is the smallest majority at this point that any party has had since the Great Depression. And we’re going to continue to stay on the case. We’re going to continue to push back against Donald Trump and his extremism that’s being unleashed on the American people as we’ve horrifically seen in Minnesota. And we’re going to fight to lower the high cost of living, fix our broken healthcare system and address the corruption that is happening from this administration in real time.

CHRIS HAYES: In the wake of the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis, lots of responses from Members of your Caucus, local elected representatives, one of the things I’ve seen from Members of the Democratic Caucus are calls to impeach Kristi Noem, not just for her stewardship of the department, but specifically the fact that she went out to the country and essentially lied, slandered a woman who had just been killed, a mother of three. There are efforts to impeach Kristi Noem. Are you open to those efforts? Do you support impeachment of Kristi Noem?

LEADER JEFFRIES: Yeah, we haven’t ruled anything in or anything out in terms of the proper way to bring about accountability. But what I can say, and we’ll have a conversation among some Caucus Members on this tomorrow—I don’t want to get out ahead of it—and then we’ll reconvene early next week. But what’s clear to me is Kristi Noem is deeply unqualified, deeply unserious and deeply dangerous. She’s a complete and total disgrace. She should never have been confirmed by the Senate in terms of holding this position. She lied to the American people, as she’s been doing repeatedly, but in this instance, slandered a 37-year-old American citizen whose life was taken without justification by an ICE agent who showed depraved indifference to human life. That agent should be criminally investigated to the full extent of the law. And simultaneously, in Congress, we need to decisively respond, and we will. And that’ll be led, of course, by Robert Garcia, who leads our efforts on the Oversight Committee, Bennie Thompson, who leads our efforts on the Homeland Security Committee and Jamie Raskin, who leads our effort on Judiciary.

CHRIS HAYES: Final question for you. This is something that Senator Chris Murphy said. ‘Democrats cannot vote for a DHS budget that doesn’t restrain the growing lawlessness of this agency.’ Do you agree with that?

LEADER JEFFRIES: I agree that we need congressional restraint to limit or address decisively the lawlessness that the Department of Homeland Security has unleashed on the American people, and we should explore every opportunity in terms of getting to that place. That’s legislative, and that’s dealing with some of the bills that are going to be before us over the next couple of weeks. Look, we’ve made clear, Chris, that we don’t go along to get along as House Democrats. That’s why we delivered this big victory for the American people. And Senate Democrats also delivered a big victory in terms of the authorization to use military force resolution passing. And we just have to continue to stay on the case on all of these things in order to begin the process of decisively ending this national nightmare in the United States.

CHRIS HAYES: We will be talking to some Senators about precisely that War Powers Resolution, which did get Republican votes today and did pass on a day when Donald Trump’s Republicans lost a bunch of votes, both in the House and the Senate. It was a really interesting day beneath the awful tragedy that’s been unfolding in Minneapolis. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, thank you very much.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Thank you.

Interview can be watched here.

MI Congresswoman Haley Stevens Secures Federal Funding for Critical Oakland County Projects; Votes to Pass Bipartisan Government Funding Bill

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Haley Stevens (D-MI) announced federal funding she secured for critical Oakland County projects in the House-passed bipartisan funding bill, H.R. 6938. Stevens voted in favor of the bill, which overwhelmingly passed 397-28. The bill now heads to the Senate for passage and must be signed into law by the President.

“My job in Congress is to put Michigan first. This funding package reflects that work,” said Congresswoman Haley Stevens. “I’m proud to have secured federal dollars for critical projects here at home that will improve our infrastructure, support good-paying jobs, strengthen our public safety, and invest in our manufacturing economy.”

Stevens, who was recently recognized as the most effective Michigan Democrat in Congress, secured funding for six projects ranging from repairing and replacing critical water infrastructure to promoting manufacturing to providing technology upgrades for Oakland County’s courts and law enforcement.

Specifically, the funding she secured provides:

  • $1,039,000 for Oakland University’s Digital Twin Center for Smart Adaptable Manufacturing. Digital Twins are highly advanced virtual models of physical manufacturing systems that provide data in real-time to monitor, diagnose, predict, and optimize the performance of a manufacturing system. This center will develop and deploy Digital Twins to boost Michigan manufacturing resilience and adaptability.
  • $1,031,000 to Oakland County for the Safer Michigan with Courts and Law Enforcement Management Information System (CLEMIS) Modernization and Transformation Project. CLEMIS is a statewide information system used by over 250 agencies that allows police, fire, EMS, prosecutors and courts to securely share critical data and coordinate emergency response.
  • $1,092,000 to the City of Berkley for Lead Water Service Line Replacements. Funding will be used to replace roughly 250 known lead water service lines throughout the City of Berkley to provide clean and safe drinking water to Michigan families.
  • $1,092,000 to the City of Farmington for Community Sanitary System Improvements. Funding will replace outdated generators and pumps and modernize an existing pump station, increasing reliability and energy efficiency for the community.
  • $723,200 to the City of Auburn Hills for Stormwater Infrastructure. Funding will repair and replace failing storm sewer pipes, an undersized storm sewer, and deteriorated manholes and catch basins.
  • $400,000 to the City of Ferndale for Lead Water Service Line Verifications. Funding will help identify the materials of unknown water service lines which will allow the City to more effectively plan for the replacement of potentially dangerous lead service lines.

Here’s what Michiganders are saying about Stevens delivering for Oakland County:

“This investment in Oakland University’s Digital Twin for Adaptable Manufacturing Project represents a significant step forward for our region’s manufacturing ecosystem. By combining advanced digital technologies with workforce development and industry collaboration, this project will help prepare students for high-demand careers, support innovation among local manufacturers, and strengthen the economic vitality of our community. We are deeply grateful for the continued support that makes this transformative work possible.” – Louay M. Chamra, Ph.D., Dean and Professor, School of Engineering and Computer Science, Oakland University

“We are incredibly grateful to Congresswoman Haley Stevens’ office for supporting our efforts to eliminate lead service lines, which is a top priority in the City of Berkley. This funding will help us make a greater investment in our community’s infrastructure needs.” – Berkley Mayor Bridget Dean

“This grant award is a vital step in our commitment to environmental stewardship and service reliability. Not only would this project help protect the Rouge River and the surrounding environment in multiple communities, but it will help reduce maintenance costs, protect our public Service staff and make this a safer and more reliable facility.” – David M. Murphy, Farmington City Manager

“The City of Auburn Hills is optimistic that legislation that includes granting the city the funding to complete critically needed storm sewer replacement, manhole repair, rehab, and reconstruction, as well as catch basin repair, rehab, and reconstruction, will be approved by the senate and signed into law so that we may continue to provide well-functioning stormwater infrastructure that benefits the many residents and businesses of our community. We are grateful to Congresswoman Stevens and her staff for recognizing the importance of this work and for championing our stormwater needs at the federal level.” – Auburn Hills City Manager Tom Tanghe

“Lead in drinking water is a serious risk to community health. Over 100 years ago, lead was commonly used in water supply lines. Many of Ferndale’s homes were developed during this time. By verifying these materials, we can properly plan the necessary replacements. We have made significant efforts to upgrade the system, but these improvements are expensive and mostly funded by residents. We are grateful for our collaboration with our legislators to help us identify funding opportunities to address local issues. This funding will help us determine the material of about 600 service lines so our team can focus on replacing known lead lines and making our community safer, healthier, and happier.” – Ferndale Mayor Raylon Leaks-May

Rep. Haley Stevens Celebrates House Passage of Bill to Fix GOP Health Care Crisis & Lower Costs for Michiganders

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)

Washington, D.C. – Today, in response to House passage of the bill to restore the Affordable Care Act health care subsidies, Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens released the following statement:

“Today, the House took a big step to protect Michigan families from rising health care costs. I proudly voted yes to extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies that make coverage more accessible for tens of thousands of Michiganders who rely on it every month. I’ll keep fighting to lower health care costs and make sure no one is priced out of the care they need.”

In a new video released earlier today, Stevens called out Republicans for unnecessarily raising health care costs on tens of thousands of Michiganders.

Congresswoman Stevens made it clear: if Republicans cared about making life more affordable for Michigan families, they should’ve all voted yes.

Watch the video here.

Key Excerpts:

  • I fought tooth and nail last year to stop this from happening, but Republicans wouldn’t budge. They wanted your costs to go up.
  • If Republicans care about making life more affordable for Michigan families, it’s time for them to vote yes.
  • I’ll keep fighting to lower costs for Michiganders and make health care accessible for everyone in our state.

Rep. Haley Stevens Introduces Bipartisan Legislation to Combat PFAS Pollution Harming Michigan Communities

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representatives Haley Stevens (D-MI), Debbie Dingell (D-MI), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Hillary Scholten (D-MI), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Mike Lawler (R-NY), and Jen Kiggans (R-VA) introduced the bipartisan Prevent Release of Toxic Emissions, Contamination, and Transfer (PROTECT) Act to close major regulatory gaps and strengthen federal oversight of PFAS air pollution – an urgent issue for communities across Michigan.

PFAS are toxic “forever chemicals” that persist in the environment, contaminate the air we breathe and water we drink, and accumulate in the human body. Michigan has hundreds of confirmed and thousands of suspected PFAS-contaminated sites, making Michigan one of the hardest-hit states by PFAS pollution nationwide.

“Michigan communities have lived with PFAS contamination for too long. The PROTECT Act closes dangerous loopholes in how these toxic chemicals are regulated, strengthens oversight of PFAS air pollution, and holds polluters accountable,” said Rep. Stevens. “This is about protecting the public health and safety of every Michigander and delivering real results for Michigan families.”

Rep. Stevens has championed efforts to reduce PFAS exposure to deliver results for Michigan families by strengthening drinking water reporting, securing major PFAS cleanup funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and introducing the PFAS Free Procurement Act. The PROTECT Act builds on her record of action to address PFAS contamination.

“PFAS are pervasive, man-made chemicals that pose an urgent threat to public health and our environment, and the number of contaminated sites is growing at an alarming rate throughout Michigan and across the country,” said Rep Dingell (D-MI).“I’m proud to be a partner on the bipartisan PROTECT Act to finally address the threat of PFAS in the air we breathe by adding it to the list of hazardous chemicals under the Clean Air Act.”

“It’s more urgent than ever that Congress compels the EPA to act to protect our communities from PFAS forever chemicals,” said Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI). “The PROTECT Act will force the EPA to do its job and begin setting emissions reduction standards so our communities can breathe clean air.”

“Clean air isn’t a luxury – it’s a right for every Michigander and every American,” said Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-MI). “As a member of the Congressional PFAS Task Force, I have worked to get PFAS contamination out of our lakes and rivers. Now, I’m proud to be leading the charge to implement emission reductions for these forever chemicals. This is commonsense, bipartisan legislation, and I look forward to working across the aisle to get it passed.”

Clean air protections should reflect how pollution actually occurs,” said Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Co-Chair of the Congressional PFAS Task Force. “PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ are released into the air and spread beyond their point of origin, yet they are not fully regulated as hazardous air pollutants. The bipartisan PROTECT Act corrects that failure by bringing PFAS under the Clean Air Act, strengthening EPA’s ability to prevent exposure and protect public health in Bucks and Montgomery Counties and across the country.”

“Protecting public health is a top priority, which is why I am proud to support the PROTECT Act,” said Rep. Lawler (R-NY). “By classifying all PFAS as hazardous air pollutants, this bill strengthens oversight of toxic emissions and reduces harmful exposure for all Americans. Environmental accountability today ensures a healthier, safer economy tomorrow.

“The science is clear: PFAS causes irreparable damage to the human body and is a major public health concern. Congress must act to ensure distributors of this harmful chemical are put on notice,” said Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA). “That is why I am proud to co-lead the PROTECT Act to compel EPA action under the Clean Air Act and ensure the American people are safer from the dangers of PFAS. This bill demands accountability, action, and urgency from our federal agencies to protect families, communities, and future generations.”

The PROTECT Act would:

  • Require the EPA to officially classify certain PFAS as hazardous air pollutants under the Clean Air Act.
  • Identify industries and facilities that release PFAS into the air.
  • Begin setting enforceable limits on PFAS air pollution from major sources.
  • Strengthen cleanup responsibility and public reporting when PFAS are released into the environment.

The full text of the bill can be found here.

Rep. Haley Stevens Slams RFK Jr.’s Vaccine Rollback; Reaffirms Call for Impeachment

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, Secretary RFK Jr. and the Department of Health and Human Services announced an overhaul of the childhood vaccine schedule.

In response to RFK Jr.’s reckless actions threatening Michigan families, MI Congresswoman Haley Stevens issued the following statement.

“RFK Jr. is ignoring decades of reliable science and making our children less safe—this is the latest step. The Secretary of Health and Human Services is supposed to protect the health of the American people. Instead, at every turn, RFK Jr. actively chooses to make our country sicker.

“RFK Jr.’s conspiracy agenda is dangerous and unacceptable. He must be impeached. I urge my colleagues in Congress to join me in holding RFK Jr. accountable and cosponsor my Articles of Impeachment. As elected officials, we have a responsibility to end this dangerous anti-science agenda and keep Michigan families safe.”

Haley Stevens Statement on Trump’s Military Actions in Venezuela

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)

WASHINGTON, D.C. –

In response to today’s military actions in Venezuela, Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens issued the following statement:

“Without Congressional approval, President Trump launched strikes on a foreign capital and seized the leader of another country. I’m grateful our service members made it home, but they never should have been sent on this mission in the first place. Michiganders don’t want more wars. I voted to put a stop to Trump’s military buildup in Venezuela, and I will work with my colleagues in Congress in the coming days to demand answers and accountability.

“While the people of Venezuela and the world are safer with Maduro’s violent regime out of power, the Trump Administration is putting the world on a slippery slope to a more dangerous, lawless future. Simultaneously, rather than work with Congress to lower costs for Michigan families, President Trump is planning to force Michiganders to cover the billions of dollars it will take to rebuild and run Venezuela. Taking over another country while Americans can’t afford their rent and groceries is unacceptable.”

Trahan Supports Bipartisan Legislation to End the GOP Health Care Crisis

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA-03)

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03), a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Health Subcommittee, voted to pass the bipartisan Breaking the Gridlock Act, legislation that would end the Republican-driven health care price hike by extending Affordable Care Act premium tax credits for three years and helping millions of Americans afford their health coverage.

“Republicans broke our health care system, exploding costs for hardworking families so they could pay for a tax cut that overwhelmingly benefits the wealthiest in our country,” said Congresswoman Trahan. “Today’s bipartisan vote in the House sends a clear message to the GOP-controlled Senate – pass this legislation immediately and save Americans’ health care.”

As of January 1, 2026, Republicans in Washington allowed critical Affordable Care Act premium tax credits to expire, driving up health insurance costs for millions of Americans who purchase coverage on their own. The impact has been immediate and severe, hitting working families, small business owners, and the self-employed with dramatic premium increases they cannot afford. In Massachusetts alone, an estimated 328,000 people were set to see their health care costs rise, including 65,400 individuals at risk of losing coverage altogether.

Despite months of efforts by House Democrats to prevent this crisis before the end of 2025, Republicans in Congress rejected every opportunity to reach a bipartisan agreement to protect Americans’ health care. Instead, they approved the longest government shutdown in history and later advanced supplemental legislation that would have resulted in an additional 100,000 Americans losing their health coverage.

In December, House Democrats filed a discharge petition to extend the ACA premium tax credits for three years. That effort secured the required 218 signatures to bring the Breaking the Gridlock Act to the House floor, leading to today’s vote. Seventeen Republicans joined all House Democrats in passing the legislation, sending the bill to the Senate for further consideration.
