Carter joins effort to prevent insider trading in Congress

Headline: Carter joins effort to prevent insider trading in Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) today joined Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil’s (R-WI) Stop Insider Trading Act as an original cosponsor.

This legislation prohibits Members of Congress, spouses, and dependent children from purchasing publicly traded stocks. The Stop Insider Trading Act also requires public notice 7 days before a lawmaker, spouse, or dependent child may sell a stock.

“Members of Congress should serve the public, not themselves. Insider trading is already illegal, yet too many loopholes exist that allow politicians like Nancy Pelosi to get rich by exploiting public trust. This bill will prevent bad actors from abusing their positions for financial gain and ensure those who are elected to Congress do so with the intention to serve, not profit,” said Rep. Carter.

“The American people deserve to know their Member of Congress is not profiting off insider information. The Stop Insider Trading Act ensures that cannot happen,” said Chairman Steil. “This legislation is critical to restoring the public’s trust in their elected officials. If you want to trade stocks, go to Wall Street, not Capitol Hill.”

The Stop Insider Trading Act would:

  • Ban Members, their spouses, and their dependent children from purchasing a security issued by a publicly traded company.
  • Require Members of Congress to file a public notice at least 7 days, but no more than 14 days, in advance for each intended sale with the Clerk of the House of Representatives.
  • Require the House Ethics Committee to issue a fee equal to $2,000 or 10% of the value of the covered investment, whichever is greater, and the net gain realized from the sale.

PRESS RELEASE

CONGRESSWOMAN PLASKETT CELEBRATES HOUSE PASSAGE OF HAITI ECONOMIC LIFT PROGRAM EXTENSION ACT

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 6504, the Haiti Economic Lift Program Extension Act, reauthorizing the HOPE/HELP trade preference program for three additional years through December 31, 2028:

“Today’s passage of the Haiti Economic Lift Program Extension Act is a significant victory for Haiti and for strategic U.S. engagement in the Caribbean. The bipartisan support for reauthorizing HOPE/HELP demonstrates that when it comes to supporting our neighbors and advancing our shared interests, Democrats and Republicans can work together.

“I am proud to have championed this legislation to support our Caribbean neighbors and foster economic development in the region. I want to thank Ranking Member Neal, Chairman Smith, Dr. Murphy, and my longtime friend, Haiti’s Ambassador to the United States, Lionel Delatour, for their leadership in keeping the light of Haiti HOPE alive in the House of Representatives. The work of countless civil society groups supporting Haiti’s stabilization and any American manufacturers pushed for the renewal of this legislation.

“HOPE/HELP is a trade preference program with strong bipartisan support, that secures jobs for our allies. Haitian apparel utilizes U.S. cotton and plays an essential role in shifting supply chains out of China and into the Western Hemisphere.

“I continue to emphasize the importance of U.S. trade engagement in the Caribbean region. This legislation advances stronger bilateral economic ties, provides greater certainty for investors, and delivers the economic security Haiti needs to rebuild and emerge more prosperous and resilient.

“The legislation will now be considered by the U.S. Senate, and if passed, will move to the President’s desk for signature. We know Haiti’s workers and families are counting on us to ensure this vital program continues without interruption.”

Background: Haiti faces overlapping humanitarian, political, and economic crises requiring immediate action. More than 60% of the people of Haiti are living below the poverty line, with over 25% in extreme poverty. The 37% youth unemployment rate, combined with declining female literacy and lower school enrollment rates, as well as the crime and gang violence, makes finding skilled work increasingly difficult.

The apparel sector is of incredible importance to Haiti’s economy and is the foundation for the country’s economic development. Given the cascading job losses and extreme security crisis that have displaced over 1.4 million Haitians and left half the country’s population experiencing life-threatening hunger, Haiti cannot afford to wait any longer for reauthorization of this vital program.

The HOPE/HELP reauthorization extends the period during which imports of certain Haitian-manufactured textile and apparel, and other goods produced in Haiti are eligible for duty-free treatment, providing the long-term certainty that Haitian producers and workers need to build stronger, more resilient futures. The legislation also restores eligibility for certain textiles that became ineligible due to changes in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule.

Bergman Secures Nearly $7 Million for Critical Community Projects Across Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Jack Bergman (MI-1)

Today, Representative Jack Bergman announced he has secured more than $6.8 million in Community Project Funding to support critical public safety and water infrastructure projects across Michigan’s First Congressional District. These projects were included in the Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act, which passed the House and is expected to move quickly through the Senate and then to President Trump for signature.

The funding will deliver direct investments to local governments to strengthen law enforcement capabilities, modernize aging water systems, and improve wastewater treatment services for residents and businesses throughout the region.

“These projects are about meeting real needs in our communities,” said Bergman. “From replacing outdated patrol vehicles to upgrading essential water and wastewater infrastructure, this funding will help keep our communities safe, protect public health, and ensure our towns and cities are prepared for the future. I will always fight to deliver results that directly benefit the people of Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.”

The following community projects were included in the funding:

  • $385,000 for Houghton County to replace aging patrol vehicles and enhance public safety capabilities.

  • $1,000,000 for the Village of Beulah to support wastewater treatment improvements and system reliability.

  • $3,000,000 for the Charter Township of Grayling to advance a municipal water service project critical to PFAS-impacted residents near the Grayling Army Airfield.

  • $750,000 for the City of Escanaba to fund water infrastructure improvements.

  • $750,000 for the City of Escanaba to upgrade water mains and service lines, reducing the risk of breaks and service disruptions.

  • $1,000,000 for the City of Tawas City to support its Primary Transmission Main Project and strengthen water delivery systems.

Bergman emphasized that many communities in Michigan’s First District face unique challenges due to aging infrastructure, rural geography, and limited local tax bases.

“These investments help relieve pressure on local taxpayers while ensuring our communities have the infrastructure they need to thrive,” Bergman added. “I will continue working with local leaders to advocate for responsible federal support that delivers measurable value back home.”

Approval of these six projects comes just weeks after Representative Bergman secured more than $5.8 million for six community projects to upgrade and support essential community facilities in Alpena, Alcona, Iron, Kalkaska, and Dickinson Counties through the Continuing Appropriations, Agriculture, Legislative Branch, Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, and Extensions Act.

Community Project Funding allows Members of Congress to directly advocate for high-priority projects identified by local governments, ensuring federal dollars are targeted to the most pressing needs at the community level.

Carter supplies $1.75 million in funding for Port Wentworth water system upgrades

Headline: Carter supplies $1.75 million in funding for Port Wentworth water system upgrades

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) today announced $1.75 million in funding to expand Port Wentworth, Georgia’s water and sewer infrastructure as part of the House-passed Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act, 2026.

This funding will support the city’s rapid growth, fueled by recent economic development projects, and provide enhanced services for current residents.

“Growth along our coast is booming, and Port Wentworth is a prime example. As a former mayor of a fast-growing Coastal Georgia city, I understand the pressures that new developments put on our water and sewer infrastructure and the need to plan for not just current, but also future, residents. This funding will go a long way towards providing a strong, bright future for Port Wentworth and the wonderful people who call it home,” said Rep. Carter.

“In the City of Port Wentworth, GA, the need for expanded water and sewer infrastructure is driven by its status as one of the fastest-growing cities in Georgia. With the population projected to potentially exceed 20,000 in 2027, the current utility systems must be upgraded to accommodate rapid residential development. The city is currently managing a significant surge in demand from new residents, and commercial projects and critical upgrades are needed in our socially and economically depressed areas. The funding to mitigate flooding and improve the quality of life for residents in flood-prone areas is a high priority for this funding request. The proposed funding will assist the city in improving its current infrastructure and greatly assist the city in meeting the increasing demand for services. Without this critical funding, the city could fail to meet its demand for reliable water/sewer services and flood prevention implementation,” said Steve Davis, Port Wentworth City Manager.

Casten Statement on Fed Chair Jerome Powell

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Sean Casten (IL-06)

January 12, 2026

Washington, D.C. (January 12, 2025) — U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (IL-06) released the following statement regarding Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell:

“President Trump’s threat to criminally charge Jerome Powell must be considered with the utmost seriousness—such dangerous and escalating attacks can cause irreparable harm to the U.S. economy. This investigation should be seen as nothing other than an attempt to strip the Federal Reserve of its independence in order to serve the short-term and politically-motivated interests of the Trump Administration. This is what an authoritarian does. When their economic policies fail, they try to intimidate independent institutions, squash dissent, and manipulate facts to their advantage.

“Jerome Powell has always zealously defended the independence of the Federal Reserve because it is both vital to the stability of the United States’ financial system and acts as a check against self-serving politicians. Any attempt to strip our central bank of its ability to independently set monetary policy will undoubtedly inflict pain on the American people.”

PRESS RELEASE

CONGRESSWOMAN PLASKETT CONGRATULATES TSEHAI ALFRED ON APPOINTMENT AS EDITOR IN CHIEF OF THE COLUMBIA DAILY SPECTATOR

U.S. Virgin Islands— Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett (D-VI) released the following statement congratulating Tsehai Alfred, a St. Croix native and former intern in her St. Croix district office, on her historic appointment as Editor in Chief and President of The Columbia Daily Spectator at Columbia University. Ms. Alfred is the first Black editor-in-chief of the publication, which is the second-oldest college daily newspaper in the United States and has been recognized as the best student newspaper in the country by the Society of Professional Journalists.

A graduate of Good Hope Country Day School, where she restarted the school newspaper, Ms. Alfred once interned in Congresswoman Plaskett’s St. Croix district office. During the summer of her freshman year at Columbia University, where she is studying English, Tsehai interned with the Virgin Islands Consortium, producing critical reporting that directly benefited the St. Croix business community. Her coverage of an obscure solid waste ordinance led to the cancellation of unwarranted fines for Christiansted businesses and resulted in the Waste Management Authority establishing a territory-wide public education initiative to ensure business owners understood their compliance obligations.

“I am incredibly proud of Tsehai and all that she has accomplished,” said Congresswoman Plaskett. “Tsehai has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to ethical journalism, community service, and giving voice to those who have been overlooked. The Virgin Islands is fortunate to have such a brilliant young woman representing our community on the national stage, and I have no doubt she will continue to make us proud.”

“Working with Tsehai was an absolute privilege,” said Tionee Scotland, Communications Director for Congresswoman Plaskett. “From day one, her intellectual curiosity, exceptional writing ability, and remarkable eye for graphic design set her apart. But what truly distinguished Tsehai was her genuine commitment to public service—she approached every assignment, whether drafting communications or researching policy issues, with the same level of excellence and attention to detail that you would expect from a seasoned professional. When her internship concluded, our office felt the loss deeply. That said, we couldn’t be more proud of her historic appointment as Editor in Chief of The Columbia Daily Spectator. Tsehai has the rare combination of brilliance, integrity, and purpose that defines truly transformative journalists. We are excited to watch her continue making an impact that will undoubtedly extend far beyond the campus.

Throughout her career, Ms. Alfred has maintained a steadfast focus on serving her community through journalism that informs, engages, and drives meaningful change. As she assumes leadership of The Spectator, she brings the same values of integrity and community-centered reporting that defined her work in the Virgin Islands.

Congresswoman Plaskett commends Ms. Alfred’s dedication to uplifting her home community through her work and congratulates her on this well-deserved achievement.

LEADER JEFFRIES: “THE ONLY PATH FORWARD IS FOR SENATE REPUBLICANS TO DO THE RIGHT THING BY THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND PASS THE DAMN BILL”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District of New York)

Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries held a press conference, where he emphasized that House Democrats know the American people deserve better, which is why we took decisive action to restore the ACA tax credits and lower healthcare costs and are demanding that John Thune and Senate Republicans pass the bill now.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Last week, House Democrats delivered a decisive victory for the American people by passing legislation to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits by three years and protecting the healthcare of tens of millions of Americans who otherwise might experience dramatically increased health insurance premiums. The bill passed by the House is now over in the Senate. It’s a bill that was passed on a bipartisan basis, every single House Democrat joined by 17 House Republicans. The only path forward at this moment is for Senate Republicans to do the right thing by the American people and pass the damn bill that we sent over to you. There’s no reason to do anything other than that. The healthcare of tens of millions of Americans is otherwise at risk. We’re talking about working class Americans, middle class Americans and everyday Americans, who deserve the same level of certainty that Senate Republicans provided to their billionaire donors when they passed massive tax breaks for the wealthy, the well-off and the well-connected as part of their One Big Ugly Bill last July, yet working class Americans, middle class Americans and everyday Americans have been forced to wait month after month after month.

Enough with the partisanship, enough with the gamesmanship, enough with the foolishness at this point in time. Pass the bill that we know currently in the Senate has majority support—every single Senate Democrat and at least four Senate Republicans who’ve previously supported a three-year extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits. From the very beginning of this fight, Democrats have made our position clear. Cancel the cuts, lower the cost, save healthcare, beginning with a three-year extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits. We’ve never wavered from that position. And against all odds, we’ve passed the bill on a bipartisan basis. It’s now over in the Senate because Democrats are actually committed to saving healthcare and lowering the high cost of living for everyday Americans. That’s who we fight for—every day, every week, every month, year after year. And we’re in this fight until we win this fight for the American people.

Full press conference can be watched here.

Rep. Cline’s Bill to Strengthen Bankruptcy System Passes the House, Heads to President’s Desk

Rep. Cline’s Bill to Strengthen Bankruptcy System Passes the House, Heads to President’s Desk

WASHINGTON, January 12, 2026

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Bankruptcy Administration Improvement Act of 2025, bipartisan legislation sponsored by Rep. Ben Cline (VA-06) to strengthen the bankruptcy system while keeping it fully funded by users, instead of taxpayers. The bill now heads to the President’s desk for signature.

“My bill makes common-sense improvements to an essential part of our judicial system,” said Rep. Cline. “It keeps bankruptcy courts running efficiently, fairly compensates trustees, and ensures the system remains self-funded without burdening taxpayers. This important step forward will help bankruptcy courts continue serving families, small businesses, and creditors, and I look forward to it being signed into law.”

BACKGROUND:

Rep. Cline’s bill:

  • Keeps the bankruptcy system self-funded by extending existing user fees so taxpayers are not required to subsidize court operations.
  • Provides fair, updated compensation for Chapter 7 trustees, increasing the per-case rate to reflect inflation and support effective oversight.
  • Extends temporary bankruptcy judgeships to help courts manage rising caseloads and prevent delays.

Congressman Ben Cline represents the Sixth Congressional District of Virginia. He previously was an attorney in private practice and served both as an assistant prosecutor and a Member of the Virginia House of Delegates. Cline and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Botetourt County with their two children.

Rep. Haley Stevens Condemns Anti-Semitic Attack on Beth Israel Congregation

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This weekend, a fire severely damaged the historic Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Mississippi in an act of suspected arson.

In response to the attack on the Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Mississippi, MI Congresswoman Haley Stevens issued the following statement.

“The attack on the Beth Israel Congregation is a painful reminder that antisemitism remains a real and dangerous threat in our country.

“This violence echoes the horrors of the 1967 bombing by the Ku Klux Klan — an act of evil that sought to silence the congregation’s calls for civil rights and equal justice. Neither bombs then nor fire today will break the resilience or spirit of this community.

“Antisemitism has no place in Mississippi or Michigan or anywhere in America. The Jewish community deserves to feel safe practicing their faith. When hatred targets one community, it threatens us all. I stand in solidarity with the members of Beth Israel Congregation and Jewish families across our country. We must be unequivocal in condemning this act. I am grateful for the swift response by authorities and will continue fighting to ensure that our communities are protected and those responsible are held fully accountable.

“Now more than ever, we must come together to reject hatred and reaffirm our shared commitment to dignity, safety, and respect for one another.”
