Swalwell Statement on Court Decision Allowing January 6 Lawsuit Against Donald Trump to Proceed

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15)

Washington, D.C. — Today, Congressman Eric Swalwell (CA-14) released the following statement after a federal judge ruled that his civil lawsuit against President Donald Trump, related to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, will proceed toward trial on most claims:

“Donald Trump thinks he can get away with murder,” said Congressman Eric Swalwell. “This lawsuit is long overdue for his hand in the destruction of our Capitol and the attack on our democracy on January 6. This case is for my colleagues, the brave Capitol Police officers, Americans everywhere, and the future of our nation. Those who incited and fueled the violence must be held responsible. I’m thankful that we will get some accountability and some measure of closure from that dark day. And that finally, the truth will come to light. We deserve it.”

In March 2021, Rep. Swalwell, along with other Members of Congress and Capitol Police officers, filed suit in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia seeking civil damages for injuries and trauma resulting from the January 6 attack. In February 2022, President Trump sought to dismiss the case entirely. A judge rejected that attempt, stating the case against him was plausible.

In more recent filings, President Trump asked the court to tell the officers who defended the Capitol on January 6 that he was immune from any responsibility for the death, injury, and destruction caused when the mob answered his call and descended upon them. Today, the court said no to each request made by President Trump’s attorneys.

With today’s ruling, the court rejected those arguments in large part, allowing the case to proceed toward trial on most claims.

Reps. Chu, Meng, Espaillat, and Senator Padilla Introduce Resolution Recognizing April as “National Language Access Month”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Judy Chu (CA2-27)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Chair Emerita of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28), CAPAC Chair Grace Meng (NY-06), and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) introduced a House resolution recognizing April as “National Language Access Month”. Senator Alex Padilla (CA) is leading the Senate companion.

Language access is essential to ensuring that all individuals, regardless of English proficiency, can fully participate in and access public services and civic life. Over 25.7 million individuals in the United States have limited English proficiency (LEP) and over 71 million individuals in the United States speak a language other than English at home. Several state and local governments including Hawai`i and New York already recognize April as Language Access Month.

The resolution highlights the importance of meaningful language access in ensuring equitable participation in Federal programs and services and encouraging awareness of language access rights and resources to all communities.

“The diverse languages spoken by our communities is something to celebrate, not punish or exclude. I am proud to lead this resolution declaring April as National Language Access Month to bring attention to the millions of individuals in the U.S. who have LEP and the importance of having language access services,” said CAPAC Chair Emerita Judy Chu (CA-28). “I first got my start in public service fighting an ugly, anti-immigrant English-only initiative in my hometown of Monterey Park. As the Trump Administration seeks to destroy language access across the federal government, it is important that we continue this fight and once again overturn these hateful policies.”

“Every American, no matter what language they speak, should be able to fully participate in federal programs and services. I am proud to co-lead this resolution recognizing April as National Language Access Month and celebrating the diversity that makes our country stronger and more vibrant. As President Trump eliminates federal translation and interpretation services, CAPAC and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus will continue to stand together to protect language access for individuals with limited English proficiency, including millions in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander community,” said Rep. Grace Meng (NY-06), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.

“I am proud to co-lead this resolution recognizing National Language Access Month because language access is a civil right, not a privilege. At a time when people are being targeted for how they speak or who they are, we must be clear: discrimination has no place in our democracy,” said Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Adriano Espaillat (NY-13). “The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is demanding the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights investigate these practices and their impact on Latino communities. Language access is about dignity, fairness, and ensuring everyone can fully participate in our economy and our democracy.”

“President Trump’s efforts to slash funding for English language learners and illegally declare English the national language are an un-American affront to our values and the tens of millions of hardworking Americans and immigrants with limited English proficiency,” said Senator Padilla (CA). “This National Language Access Month, we must maintain and improve language tools that help millions of Californians and people across the country access critical federal programs and services like housing support, health care, education, tax assistance, and legal counsel.”

This resolution comes in the wake of President Trump’s rollback of federal language access provisions with Executive Order (EO) 14224, which seeks to declare English as the official language of the United States and rescinds EO 13166, a decades-long policy that established meaningful language accessibility across federal agencies and funding recipients.

The resolution is cosponsored by Reps. Barragán, Dean, Lieu, Menendez, Min, Mullin, Holmes Norton, Thanedar, Thompson, Tlaib, Vargas, and Wilson.

The resolution is further endorsed by UnidosUS, Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF), National Immigration Law Center (NILC), California Center for Civic Participation, National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (CAPACD), National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA), Thai Community Development Center (Thai CDC), Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC), Khmer Community of Seattle-King County, OCA–Asian Pacific American Advocates, National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association (NAAPIMHA), Asian Pacific Islanders Civic Action Network, Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence, The Sikh Coalition, Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE), BCNC, Empowering Pacific Islander Communities, Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC), Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), Stop AAPI Hate, South Asian Public Health Association, Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California (AJSOCAL), AREAA, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Sadhana: Coalition of Progressive Hindus, California Healthy Nail Salons Collaborative, South Asian American Justice Collaborative, United Nations and European Union, NAKASEC TX, Missouri Asian American Youth Foundation, Metropolitan Asian Deaf Association, Asian Law Caucus, Hmong National Development, Inc., Hmong American Partnership, Little Tokyo Service Center, Ayuda, Japanese American Citizens League, Century 21 Advantage Gold, Long Island Language Advocates Coalition, Saahas for Cause, Association of Language Companies, Spring Institute for Intercultural Learning, Colorado Interpreters and Translators Association, Colorado Language Connection (Aurora Mental Health & Recovery), Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote (APIAVote), Massachusetts Law Reform Institute, Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters, NAJIT, South Asian Network, and SAAVETX EF.

March Recap: Chairman Griffith Helps Lead Awareness on Health Care Issues

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA)

U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA), Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, delivered on multiple opportunities to raise awareness on health care issues facing the United States.

Chairman Griffith continued the Health Subcommittee’s affordability series to follow on House Republicans’ commitment to help lower health care costs. The latest hearing in this series, entitled “Lowering Health Care Costs for All Americans: An Examination of the U.S. Provider Landscape,” featured hospital providers. Chairman Griffith promoted patient access to physician-owned hospitals to help drive down health care costs. Chairman Griffith’s Physician-Led and Rural Access to Quality Care Act is one potential solution. Chairman Griffith’s remarks on this topic can be found here.

Following publication of his February op-ed in the Washington Times, Chairman Griffith appeared on The Julie Mason Show to discuss the importance of rural health care. The op-ed highlights the historic investments made in rural health care. Chairman Griffith also highlights the role of community health centers and telehealth, which received federal funding in the February minibus, to help support rural communities.

Additionally, Chairman Griffith highlighted health care causes on Capitol Hill. Chairman Griffith wore a turquoise ribbon in support of Lung Cancer Awareness Day. As an original co-sponsor of the Lung Cancer Screening and Prevention Act of 2025, Chairman Griffith continues to explore the legislative terrain to aid the fight against cancer. Moreover, Chairman Griffith submitted remarks into the Congressional Record to recognize National Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Week. Southwest Virginia’s AHEC helps address critical health care needs in Virginia’s Ninth District.

Congressman Cohen Seeks to Make Elvis Presley Boulevard Repairs a State DOT Priority

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09)

“This roadway should reflect the importance of the community it serves, not undermine it,” he writes

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today wrote to Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Will Reid urging him to prioritize the long overdue completion of repairs to Elvis Presley Boulevard. In his letter, the Congressman noted that continued delays and uncertainty have dragged this project on for over a decade. He emphasized the importance of Elvis Presley Boulevard for Whitehaven residents and the entire Memphis area.

The letter reads in part:

“I write to urge you to prioritize the long-overdue completion of Elvis Presley Boulevard and to include full funding for this project in Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT)’s 10-Year Plan.

“The current condition of Elvis Presley Boulevard is unacceptable. Deteriorating pavement, unsafe driving conditions, and ongoing vehicle damage have become daily realities for residents of Whitehaven and the thousands of visitors who travel this corridor each year. As a primary gateway to Memphis, this roadway should reflect the importance of the community it serves, not undermine it.

“I recently met with a local community group whose frustration over this issue is deep and justified. For years, they have been promised improvements that have yet to materialize. This road is the major thoroughfare connecting Whitehaven to Mississippi and serves as a vital economic and cultural corridor. Yet despite its significance, it continues to be overlooked.

“As you are aware, over a decade ago, plans were announced for a more than $40 million redesign of Elvis Presley Boulevard, but this project has continuously been delayed and plagued with funding uncertainty.  Constituents have increasingly raised concerns that the lack of progress and prioritization reflects inequitable treatment of their community. These concerns deserve serious attention.

“Because 80 percent of the project’s funding is federal, my office regularly hears from frustrated residents who expect progress and accountability. I share their concerns and am deeply invested in ensuring that this project moves forward without further delay.

“While I recognize that TDOT must balance many priorities in developing its 10-Year Plan, the continued deferral of this project is not sustainable. I strongly encourage you to secure the resources necessary to fund repairs for Elvis Presley Boulevard and ensure the project is completed. Additionally, a clear timeline for completion would be helpful.”

Celebrating National Reading Month

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Bruce Westerman (AR-04)

As digital entertainment dominates the attention of our nation’s youth, it is important to be reminded of the great significance reading has on sharpening the mind and broadening the ability to think critically. March is National Reading Month, and I’m grateful for this time set aside that underscores the importance of such a critical aspect of education.

Ronald Reagan once said, “Reading is a key to past, present, and future – a path into virtually limitless treasures of knowledge and inspiration. Reading encourages wonder about the world, broadens awareness of others, and offers clues about the meaning of life.”

Our late President is exactly right. Reading offers a way to expand the mind in a way that our digital devices are unable to. Holding a book in your hands, turning its pages, and reading its words of wisdom offers a moment in time for your mind to take a break, learn something new, and move forward with a broadened awareness.

As the co-chair of the Congressional Dyslexia Caucus, it is very important that we also shine a light on the most common learning disability that is directly tied to reading: dyslexia. Within this caucus, I have the unique ability to work in Congress on behalf of educators, parents, and students with dyslexia to advocate for a more science-based approach to creating a modern understanding around the definition of dyslexia.

While this learning disability unfortunately remains woefully misunderstood, it should never be a roadblock for students’ success in the classroom. Thankfully, great efforts are being made on the state level in Arkansas to ensure students with reading disabilities can receive the help they need early on to achieve higher academic outcomes and keep them on a level playing field with their peers.

Reading connects our present to our past. It’s a tool to expand our minds, increase our awareness of the world around us, and even allow us to visit hidden corners of the globe. The significance of reading can never be understated, which is why I am proud to continue advocating for a better understanding of reading disabilities to ensure no student is left behind in the classroom.

Dalilah’s Law Restores Roadway Integrity

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Bruce Westerman (AR-04)

Sitting in the Transportation and Infrastructure hearing room this week as Chairman Graves gaveled us in to begin committee activity was young Dalilah Coleman accompanied by her mother and father. Committee hearings and markups are open to the public, so it’s common to look out and see folks sitting in who have just visited a Smithsonian museum or finished a Capitol tour, looking for a front row seat to observe the legislative process while visiting Washington.

However, this young guest was special because we would be passing a bill out of committee named in her honor that morning, sending it to the House Floor for a vote.

Dalilah’s Law was crafted after her car was struck by a semi-truck operated by an illegal alien with no English proficiency who did not meet the commercial driver’s license (CDL) standards. Because of this tragedy, Dalilah suffered life-altering injuries.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) reported that, in 2025, at least seventeen fatal crashes and thirty deaths were linked to unqualified foreign drivers illegally operating commercial motor vehicles. Dalilah’s Law works to prevent future tragedies from occurring on our roads by ensuring stronger safety standards for CDLs and ensuring training providers are following the rules.

It was also disheartening to learn that the DOT reported that nearly 3,000 truck driver training schools were removed from the federal registry after investigators found falsified training records. It shouldn’t be controversial to ask that individuals operating an 80,000-pound semi-truck be able to understand and follow our nation’s road signs or be able to effectively communicate with law enforcement.

Weak policies and loopholes have unfortunately allowed unsafe drivers on our roads. But this week, House Republicans advanced legislation to the House Floor that closes these loopholes and brings us one step closer to restoring Americans’ trust and safety. It’s a privilege to work on legislation that not only honors individuals like young Dalilah but restores faith in our transportation system to ensure the safety of those traveling on our nation’s roads.

Congresswoman Torres Secures $1 Million for Vista Verde II Affordable Housing Development in Ontario

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Norma Torres (35th District of California)

March 31, 2026

Ontario, CA – Today, Congresswoman Norma Torres (CA-35) joined City of Ontario Mayor Paul Leon and local leaders to celebrate the delivery of $1,000,000 in federal funding for the Vista Verde II Affordable Housing Development, a critical project that will expand access to affordable housing for working families in the City of Ontario. Torres, a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, obtained the funding as a community project in the fiscal year 2026 appropriations process.

The funding will support the development of a 150-unit affordable housing community on Holt Boulevard, providing a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes.

Vista Verde II will help address the Inland Empire’s growing housing shortage while supporting long-term economic stability for families. The project will also generate local construction jobs, strengthen the regional workforce, and contribute to Ontario’s broader economic development goals.

“Families in the Inland Empire are being priced out of their own communities, and that is unacceptable. As an appropriator, I fought to deliver $1 million for Vista Verde II because affordable housing is critical for our families,”said Congresswoman Norma Torres. “This project will create 150 homes for the City of Ontario’s working families, bring jobs to our region, and help ensure that our community can grow without leaving people behind. I will continue fighting to bring home the resources our families need to live with stability and opportunity.”
