Díaz-Balart, Moskowitz, Gonzales, Cherfilus-McCormick Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Streamline School Safety Grant Process

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (25th District of FLORIDA)

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Representative Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL-26) and Reps. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL-23), Tony Gonzales (R-TX-23), and Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL-20) introduced the Single Application for School Safety Act (SASS), which aims to enhance school safety measures by streamlining the grant application process and cutting bureaucratic red tape. This bill simplifies the process for teachers and administrators by requiring only one application to be submitted to the Department of Justice, making it easier to access school safety grants. This streamlined approach supports federal funding for security measures such as cameras, door locks, intercoms, and threat reporting systems, ensuring schools and law enforcement have access to critical resources.

“Ensuring school safety remains a top priority for our country. Applying for a school safety grant application should not be difficult.

“To streamline the process and reduce bureaucratic delays, I, alongside my colleague Rep. Moskowitz, introduced the SASS Act.

“This bill simplifies the application process by now requiring only a single application submission to the Department of Justice, rather than multiple, cumbersome applications, for teachers and school administrators. I look forward to working with my colleagues to getting this bill passed and to President Trump’s desk,” said Rep. Díaz-Balart

Díaz-Balart and Moskowitz Honor Parkland Families by Reintroducing the Bipartisan, Bicameral EAGLES Act

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (25th District of FLORIDA)

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today marks seven years since the horrific Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, which claimed the lives of 17 students and staff. Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL-26) and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL-23) are honoring the Parkland families by reintroducing the bipartisan, bicameral EAGLES Act, which expands the U.S. Secret Service’s National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) to establish a national program focused on targeted school violence prevention and provide additional resources to expand research, information-sharing, and training on a national scale. The EAGLES Act, named for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Eagles, would also provide additional resources to broaden NTAC’s program to include protection for workplaces and houses of worship.

The Senate companion was introduced by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV)

“Over the years, I have been worked towards making our communities and schools a safer place. The safety of our children is of the utmost importance for every family. All parents should feel confident that when they drop their child off at school, that child is in a safe environment. That is why school safety must remain a top priority in our country, and that begins by taking the appropriate measures to prevent targeted violence and school violence. As a staunch supporter of school safety hardening measures to protect our students, teachers, and administrators, I am proud to reintroduce the EAGLES Act which builds upon President Trump’s leadership following the horrendous tragedy on February 14th, 2018.

“President Trump swiftly responded by establishing a Federal Commission on School Safety comprised of key agency heads who met with a series of experts across various sectors and produced real common-sense recommendations for the President and Congress to consider. President Trump led the charge in the creation of a one-stop shop federal clearinghouse for schools to review grant resources, and tools at their disposal to identify threats, www.SchoolSafety.Gov, which later I worked to codify into law.

“Following the recommendations of the report, I, alongside my colleagues across the House and Senate chambers, introduced the EAGLES Act to establish a school safety initiative. Under this initiative the U.S. Secret Service NTAC will develop nationwide plan to identify and mitigate threats of targeted school violence, drawing on decades of training and evidence-based research

“The EAGLES Act goes even further in honoring the 17 lives lost by protecting not just schools, but also workplaces and houses of worship equipping individuals with the tools to identify and respond to potential threats. I look forward to continuing this critical work alongside President Trump and will remain steadfast in ensuring our schools and communities have the necessary tools and resources to remain safe,” said Rep. Díaz-Balart.

“Seven years ago, my hometown of Parkland was shattered by the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Every year since that horrific day is a brutal reminder of the work we still must do to protect our kids in schools. These incidents aren’t a red issue or a blue issue — they affect schools all over the country. No student should be scared just to go to class, and no family should fear their child won’t come home. Congress must act to protect our students and faculty, and this bipartisan bill is an important step forward in comprehensively tracking, targeting, and mitigating violence at schools to help keep everyone on school campuses safe,” said Rep. Moskowitz.

“Effective behavioral threat assessments and early interventions can stop deadly ideas from becoming tragic acts. Our bill would enable the Secret Service to share their unique tools and expertise with school safety partners across the country, building safer communities. While we cannot undo past tragedies, we can work together to honor the memories of those we’ve lost and prevent future violence,” Senator Grassley said.

“School shootings have devastated communities across the country, including in Nevada,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “This bipartisan legislation will help our law enforcement stop these violent attacks before they occur, so families can send their children to school without fear.”

“This Valentine’s Day marks seven years since my little boy Alex was murdered in the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history; the Parkland massacre. I hope all members of congress will support this important piece of school safety legislation. Threat management is the best tool we have to prevent acts of targeted violence. The EAGLES Act will help make our school safer all over the country. Thank you to my friend Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart for championing this issue,” said Max Schacter, Alex Schacter’s father and Founder & CEO of Safe Schools for Alex.

“We are incredibly grateful to Rep. Diaz-Balart and Rep. Moskowitz for their unwavering commitment to making America’s schools safer. Seven years have passed since our loved ones were murdered at school. Bipartisan legislation like the EAGLES Act must move forward in Congress to protect our nation’s students and teachers. The reintroduction of this critical bill brings us closer to ensuring that no other family has to endure the heartbreak of losing a child to preventable, senseless violence.” said Tony Montalto, Gina Montalto’s father and President of Stand with Parkland.

Background

The U.S. Secret Service’s National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) was created in 1998 to develop evidence-based indicators for various types of targeted violence, including school violence. NTAC’s findings can then be used to develop best practices and training to prevent future acts of violence. Since 2002, Secret Service has conducted hundreds of training operations for more than 198,000 school administrators, teachers, counselors, mental health professionals, school resource officers, and other public safety partners. The demand for NTAC training has significantly increased in recent years, with participants including faith-based leaders, workplace managers, school personnel, mental health professionals, law enforcement, and others.

Maxine Waters Honors National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Jenniffer González-Colón (Puerto Rico)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43) introduced a resolution to recommit the House of Representatives to bipartisan efforts to end the HIV epidemic in the United States and globally in recognition of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. It also calls for a greater focus on the HIV-related vulnerabilities of women and girls.

Congresswoman Waters has been spearheading initiatives to increase HIV/AIDS awareness since the 1980s, including with the establishment of the Minority AIDS Initiative. The Minority AIDS initiative significantly expanded HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment efforts for minority communities. Because of her advocacy, the funding for this initiative has increased from the initial appropriation of $156 million in Fiscal Year 1999 to more than $400 million per year today.

“I have been advocating for HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, screening, and treatment for the entirety of my career,” said Congresswoman Maxine Waters. “Women and girls are disproportionately affected by HIV and face unique barriers in accessing prevention and treatment services. My resolution ensures that we continue efforts to improve access to life-saving medications for women and girls affected by HIV/AIDS in the United States and globally.”

Last year, Waters led a bipartisan group of 60 Members of Congress in calling for robust funding for domestic HIV/AIDS programs in a letter to House Appropriations Committee leaders. The letter was a response to House Republicans’ proposal to cut $767 million from domestic HIV/AIDS programs, including the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, the Ending the HIV Epidemic Initiative, and the Minority AIDS Initiative.

Alongside Waters, this resolution is cosponsored by Representatives Robin L. Kelly (IL-02), Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC-00), Nydia M. Velázquez (NY-07), Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-20), Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09), Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), Danny K. Davis (IL-07), Jonathan L. Jackson (IL-01), Henry C. “Hank” Johnson, Jr. (GA-04), Jennifer McClellan (VA-04), LaMonica McIver (NJ-10), Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03), Terri Sewell (AL-07), Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02), Dina Titus (NV-01), and Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12).

ICYMI: Maxine Waters Joins Thousands in March to Commemorate 60th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Jenniffer González-Colón (Puerto Rico)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43) issued the following statement after she joined thousands to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama:

“60 years ago, 600 brave people marched from Selma to Montgomery to fight for a more just future for everyone. They marched on despite being trampled by horses or beaten by troopers. That’s why I march every year to honor the work of the civil rights leaders that fought for us and paved the way for Black people to have equal rights.

“Trump and unelected billionaire Elon Musk are working to set us back. They have stripped diversity, equity, and inclusion programs from federal agencies. They are cutting thousands of federal workers from their jobs and defunding Medicaid and Social Security. We can’t let that cruelty continue.

“Just like the civil leaders before us, we must hit the streets. The real crisis is quickly approaching, and we must be ready to fight back. Together, we can use our voice to influence the courts. Together, we can win.”

Maxine Waters Sends Letter to Secretary Kennedy Demanding Answers on Reported Elimination of HIV Funding

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Jenniffer González-Colón (Puerto Rico)

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43) sent a letter to the U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. demanding answers regarding the reported complete elimination of $700 million in Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funding for HIV prevention.

In the letter, Congresswoman Waters slams the agency’s drastic and irresponsible actions that would have catastrophic consequences for public health, including critical prevention and screening services in our battle against HIV/AIDS.

“This decision is not just reckless — it is deadly. By eliminating HIV prevention funding, lives will be lost. People who rely on outreach programs for testing will go undiagnosed. Individuals who depend on prevention services will be left unprotected. Health systems that have worked tirelessly to combat this epidemic will be overwhelmed with preventable cases. This is an unconscionable abdication of responsibility by the federal government,” wrote Congresswoman Waters.

“NMAC is deeply grateful to Congresswoman Waters for her unwavering commitment to protecting HIV funding. The proposed cuts to HIV prevention would be catastrophic, threatening decades of progress in the fight against HIV. The community is deeply concerned by these potential reductions, but we take solace in knowing that Congresswoman Waters is on the frontlines, fiercely advocating for these critical resources,” said Harold Phillips, Deputy Director of Programs for NMAC.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters Statement on the Passing of Raúl Grijalva

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Jenniffer González-Colón (Puerto Rico)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43) issued the following statement upon the news of the death of Congressman Raúl Grijalva:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend and colleague, Congressman Raúl Grijalva. I extend my deepest condolences to his wife, his family, and his friends during this difficult time.

“Congressman Grijalva dedicated over 50 years to public service and was one of the strongest advocates for environmental justice. As the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee, he tirelessly fought to protect our natural resources and sacred lands.

“Over the decades that we have served in Congress together, we’ve become close friends. From lifting the voices of progressives across the country with the Congressional Progressive Caucus to working on legislation together, I’ve enjoyed my time fighting for the American people with Congressman Grijalva.

“Although we lost a progressive giant yesterday, his legacy will continue to inspire the next generation of leaders and climate activists to fight for a better future for everyone. He was a wonderful and loving spirit that will be sorely missed in the halls of Congress.”

Congresswoman Waters Denounces Trump’s Unconstitutional Executive Order Abolishing the Department of Education

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Jenniffer González-Colón (Puerto Rico)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Ranking Member of the Committee on Financial Services, released the following statement in response to President Trump’s unconstitutional executive order abolishing the U.S. Department of Education.

“Once again, Donald Trump has issued another reckless and appalling executive order. This time, it’s abolishing the U.S. Department of Education. As any high school student knows, Trump cannot singlehandedly abolish the Department of Education. This blatantly unconstitutional executive order is just another piece of evidence that Trump has absolutely no respect for the Constitution, which he took an oath to preserve, protect, and defend when he was sworn in as president.

“We cannot allow Trump to ignore the Constitution, steal funds that belong to our schools, colleges, and universities, frighten students, confuse teachers and administrators, and threaten the very fabric of our nation’s educational system.

“It’s reckless and cruel for the president to even consider abolishing the Department of Education. Last year, the state of California received over $10 billion from the Department of Education. These funds were appropriated by Congress and allocated for key programs like Title I assistance for local schools, Pell Grants for low-income college students, special education, and grants for schools that need the most support. This funding helps ensure students across the state have access to vital resources and opportunities.

“California’s 43rd District alone serves nearly 180,000 students, and this federal support plays a critical role in funding programs that support basic education in reading, math and science, assist students with disabilities, provide financial aid for higher education, and help schools in underfunded areas improve educational outcomes. Trump will put all of this funding at risk.

“In my district, we are fortunate to be served by several dedicated school districts that are working tirelessly to provide quality education, including Torrance Unified School District, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Compton Unified, Inglewood Unified, Hawthorne School District, Lawndale Elementary School District, Wiseburn Unified School District, Centinela Valley Union High School District, and Lennox School District. These school districts, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education, are committed to fostering an environment where all students, whether they are from South Los Angeles, Watts, Willowbrook, or the diverse cities and communities of the South Bay, can thrive.

“I will continue working tirelessly to strengthen the Department of Education and make sure that it continues to do its job for the American people.”
