Today, the California Republican House Delegation released the following statement on the negative impacts of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s energy policies:

“California families and small businesses are getting crushed every day by the high cost of energy in California that is a direct result of the radical policies put in place by Governor Gavin Newsom. The high cost of electricity and gasoline has resulted in higher energy expenses as well as inflated costs for goods and services throughout the economy. 

Households and job creators aren’t the only ones feeling the pain from these high energy costs and the shortage behind them. California is home to the highest number of active-duty personnel and major military bases. The Governor’s war on energy in California is threatening our national security and is of significant concern as we increasingly shift our focus to confront potential threats in the Pacific. 

For the sake of California families, small businesses, and our military, our delegation is calling on Gov. Newsom to reverse his devastating energy policies that are severely raising costs.”

THE HIGH COST OF ENERGY IN CALIFORNIA

• California’s residential and commercial electricity rates are the highest in the nation’s lower 48 states. (Source: CalMatters)

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Ranking Member of the Committee on Financial Services, released the following statement today: 

 

“I am outraged that President Trump decided to withhold contingency funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), during the government shutdown. SNAP – which is known as CalFresh in California – provides vital nutrition assistance to 42 million Americans. While a federal court overruled this decision and further litigation may be pending, the President’s decision has created uncertainty for more than five million Californians, who may be unable to use their CalFresh benefits beginning November 1^st. 

“This decision came after conservatives in Washington decided to shut down the government and ignored Democrats in the process. Republicans control the US House of Representatives, the US Senate, and the White House. Speaker Mike Johnson canceled all previously scheduled House votes just days before the shutdown began on October 1st. Since then, the Speaker has not brought the House back into session to allow conservatives and Democrats to meet and end this painful government shutdown. 

“In July, conservatives passed what President Trump called the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ into law, without any support from Democratic Members of Congress. There was nothing beautiful about the bill that, according to the Congressional Budget Office, cut $186 billion from SNAP and nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid and made it easier for billionaires to pay less in taxes. Now, a month into the government shutdown, these same conservatives are refusing to meet with Democrats to reopen the government. 

“The American people deserve better! 

“I will continue to fight hard for each of you to ensure we have a functioning government that benefits all Americans. Below you’ll find important information about where you can find food assistance and other types of community support during the shutdown.”

Residents of the City of Los Angeles can also dial 311 for City of LA services including Family Source Centers that help provide weekly food distributions if you meet their low-income threshold. Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)

 

WIC is a federally funded program that provides free healthy foods, breastfeeding support, nutrition education, and referrals. You may qualify in California if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding/chestfeeding, recently had a baby or care for a child under 5, have low-to-moderate income or receive Medi-Cal, CalWORKs, or CalFresh, and live in California. Working families, farmworkers, and furloughed federal employees may also qualify. You can visit a WIC office or call 800-852-5770.

Washington, DC — Today, Representative Bill Foster (D-IL) led 25 colleagues in sending a bipartisan letter calling on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to ensure that Ukrainians in the Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) program are not unfairly burdened by processing delays that trigger a new $1,000 fee.

The U4U program allows Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s invasion to live and work in the United States on a temporary humanitarian basis. To remain in the country legally, participants must periodically renew that permission through a re-parole application.

Earlier this year, USCIS placed a months-long hold on processing these renewal applications, leaving many families in limbo. Because of these delays, some Ukrainians who applied nearly a year ago are now being told that they must pay the new $1,000 fee—even though their applications were submitted before the law creating the fee took effect. 

In a letter to DHS Secretary Noem and USCIS Director Edlow, the Members wrote:

“This lengthy delay means that families who submitted their re-parole applications nearly a year

ago are now unfairly subjected to the new $1,000 fee. The delay has also left many Ukrainians

temporarily without legal status, forcing them to cease working and making the $1,000 fee 

an even larger burden.

“By forcing unreasonable fees and legal uncertainty onto these families, which will likely result in

many being forced to return to their war-torn homes, we are abdicating our responsibility to

support our allies in their fight for autonomy and democracy. For these reasons, we urge you to

apply the fee only to individuals who submitted their applications on or after July 4, 2025, so that

all families, including those participating in U4U, are fairly adjudicated under the rules that were

in place when they applied.”

“Tonight, I voted against the Senate government funding deal. Since open enrollment began, I’ve heard from countless constituents that their premiums are more than doubling next year—and many are not sure they will be able to afford health coverage at all. I cannot support a bill that leaves them behind.

“A ‘promise’ to potentially hold a vote in the Senate on extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits next month does nothing to address the health care crisis Republicans have put us in—especially since Speaker Johnson has repeatedly refused to allow the House to vote on any similar measure to reduce health care costs.

“In 2010, my Democratic colleagues and I passed the Affordable Care Act, legislation that was fully paid for by raising taxes on the wealthy and provided health coverage to millions of Americans. Since taking control of Congress and the White House, Republicans have exploded the deficit by giving tax breaks to billionaires while working to strip millions of Americans of their health coverage—through cuts to Medicaid and now, the Affordable Care Act. The difference could not be more clear.”

Leader Scalise’s remarks:“Thank my friend, the chairman of the appropriations, Mr. Cole from Oklahoma, for not only yielding, but for bringing this important bill to the floor. Our appropriators worked tirelessly to negotiate a multi-bill package that is part of this bill to reopen the government.“We never should have been here, Mr. Speaker. We tried as Republicans over a month ago to prevent a government shutdown. We had a vote here on the House floor. 99% of Republicans voted to keep the government open, and 99% of Democrats voted to shut it down. Then that bill went over to the Senate, and we watched for 42 days, where time and time again, Democrats, just to appease their most radical base, continued to vote in unison to shut the government down. During that shutdown, we saw millions of families experience pain, Mr. Speaker. Pain and suffering that Democrats themselves acknowledged that they imposed on the American people. But they said over and over again, we have quote after quote from Democrats during the shutdown that they needed to impose the suffering to get leverage, Mr. Speaker, to use the American people as pawns to get leverage for what?“They ultimately filed an alternative bill, a $1.5 trillion mad spending spree that included things like $200 billion of taxpayer funding for illegals to get taxpayer benefits while they gutted the $50 billion rural health care fund that we put in place in the Working Families Tax Cut. So, Mr. Speaker, anybody who comes up here and says they care about health care, they were also advocating to gut the $50 billion rural health care fund to provide $200 billion in taxpayer-funded health care benefits for illegals. It’s insanity. If you really want to look at where this all began, as some on the other side, Democrats want to talk about a health care crisis, the health care law of the land is what many refer to as Obamacare. But let’s remember the original name that Democrats gave that bill when they created it. They called it the Affordable Care Act. The Affordable Care Act. Only Democrats voted for it. Republicans knew it was going to be anything but affordable. It was going to interfere with the doctor-patient relationship. Unfortunately, it’s done that.“If you want to talk about affordable, maybe the only other bill that’s more laughable in its name is the Inflation Reduction Act. Yeah, that’s another product brought to you by Democrat-only votes. The Inflation Reduction Act, which ushered in the inflation under Joe Biden that we’re still trying to shake today. But the Affordable Care Act, Mr. Speaker, since it started, Americans have seen over 80% increases in their health care costs because of a Democrat-created bill that they want to now blame on Republicans. I understand why they would want to try to now pawn that off on somebody else. But then if you look over time, during COVID, they created a temporary relief fund, not to individuals, Mr. Speaker, but to insurance companies. Democrats created a temporary, they called it temporary in the law, temporary COVID relief tax credit to insurance companies, to bail out big insurance companies who are seeing record profits, and that’s now what they want Republicans to renew. An insurance company bailout that Democrats created to be temporary. They set it up to expire. Now they’re saying that the world’s going to end if that insurance company bailout doesn’t get renewed.“While at the same time, when we as Republicans worked to actually lower premiums for families, they fought it every step of the way. That’s right. We had a bill that we passed through this House just a few months ago in the Working Families Tax [Act]. Part of that bill was called the cost-sharing reduction. Was scored by the CBO to lower premiums for families by over 12%. And what happened? It gets over… by the way, every Democrat goes against that, too, because they never cared about lowering premiums. Then that bill gets over to Senate. Senate Democrats worked overtime to get that provision removed. And if you go look at Senate Democrat Budget Committee website, they still bragged that they removed that provision that would have lowered premiums for families. Absolutely, Republicans have worked, and will continue, by the way, to work to lower premiums for families. But make no mistake, the high premiums that everybody faces today are a result of the inaptly named Affordable Care Act and the many failures associated with it.“This bill today is about ending the misery Democrats created on families. That is just about funding the government, not about solving other problems that we should be working to solve, but about getting the government back open while not holding the American people hostage. That, Mr. Speaker, is what has disgusted the American people most during this shutdown, that should have never happened, but it’s that it is caused real suffering for American families. Our men and women in uniform that had to wonder whether or not they’re going to get paid. The air traffic controllers who already had a highly stressful job and then had to show up for work without getting paid. Multiple paychecks missed. Now you’re seeing because a lot of those air traffic controllers have to go work jobs as Uber drivers. They aren’t even being able to show up for work because they still have bills due, their rents due. They’re trying to put food on their table, and Democrats want to vote no tonight to keep denying them food. The 42 million SNAP recipients, those people that are low income that need those food benefits. If you vote no today, you are voting to deny those 42 million low-income families basic food needs. Don’t talk about how much you care about low-income people and vote no tonight to deny them food, basic services, basic things that American families need who shouldn’t be part of the leverage Democrats want to show their radical base that they’re fighting Donald Trump because they’re upset with the results of the election from November.“It is time to end this madness, Mr. Speaker. Let’s get this government back open. Let’s go negotiate our differences, which are many, but let’s do it while not continuing to hold the American people hostage. I urge my Democrat colleagues who have voted relentlessly to shut this government down and impose suffering on the American people to stop. Stop imposing the suffering. Let’s open the government. Let’s get back to the work of the American people.”

Excerpts from Leader Scalise’s interview:On the need to end the shutdown and end the pain Democrats are inflicting on Americans:“We’ve been trying to end the shutdown for over a month now. I think some Democrats still want to play games and inflict pain on families across America, but we’ve got enough, luckily, eight in the Senate. We may get a few more than that in the House who want to end this madness and just let people get back to their lives, stop holding hostages. We still have differences we need to negotiate. That’s going to go on, but don’t hold the American people hostage. It’s been a ridiculous shutdown. It’s time to end.“[Democrats] know that this is inflicting pain on millions of Americans. Are they not listening to those people? These aren’t the millionaires and the billionaires that they love deriding every day. This is the least amongst us. SNAP recipients, low-income families who really need those food stamps. It’s going to be our men and women in uniform, air traffic controllers who work incredibly stressful jobs, and now have to also go drive an Uber shift just to make ends meet because the bills are still due, just because Democrats shut the government down, and they don’t care that they’re inflicting pain on people. It’s madness. But it’s going to end today, hopefully, and let’s move on.“Well, it’s going to be work because you still see the Democrat leadership digging in against this thing. Again, last night, they were in the Rules Committee until 1:30 in the morning, trying to bring amendments to do things like gut the $50 billion rural hospital fund. What does that have to do with any of these fights? How is that going to help any family to hurt rural hospitals? They are a rudderless ship of a party right now. They don’t know what they want. All they know is they want to wreak havoc on the American economy and hold Americans hostage. I think the American people are sick of it, and it’s going to end today.”On House Republicans lowering premiums for hardworking families:“Those COVID health benefits, the subsidies they’re talking about, that go to insurance companies, were set up by Democrats, not Republicans, to be temporary. Democrats are the ones who set them up to expire. They never wanted them to go on beyond COVID. And yet now they’re saying that’s what the shutdown is about. Well, then why were they trying to gut the $50 billion rural hospital fund last night?“I think the one thing that all of this is exposed is that Obamacare is deeply broken. It was Democrats who created it. Everybody knows Democrats only passed Obamacare. We said it was going to create problems, raise costs for families, limit options, limit the doctor-patient relationship. It’s done all of those things, unfortunately. Now we’re at a place, do you keep shoveling hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer money into insurance companies while your premiums keep going up? Or do we actually focus on lowering premiums? That’s what Republicans have been focusing on.“In fact, in our One Big Beautiful Bill, we had a provision called the CSR, Cost Share Reduction, that would have lowered premiums for families by 13% on their health insurance premiums, and it was Democrats who blocked it. Democrats have always been against lowering premiums because they want to push everybody into Obamacare, even though they admit it’s failed and it’s costing families unbelievably more money, 80% more you’re paying for Obamacare than just 10 years ago. Why won’t they work with us to lower premiums on families?”On House Republicans hitting the ground running after Democrats held the government hostage:“Look, we’re ready to go. We’re going to get this thing back on track, and then we have a lot of work that we’re going to make up. Next week is going to be a very busy week in the House. We’re going to be moving policy agenda items…“There are a lot of other good ideas. We’re looking at permitting reform. We want to do a number of other things to help energy production in America, lowering crime. We got a very busy agenda the rest of this year.”

Gimenez’s], sad stories, the start, the root of it, having to flee your home country because Cuba fell to Marxism, to communism. But luckily for people like Carlos, all around the world, there’s one place that they can look to if they want a North Star. If they still believe in freedom, they yearn for that desire, and then it fails in their home country, they can look to the United States because the United States represents freedom all around the world. And how dangerous of a position that is when Marxists from within try to change it here, try to unravel what makes America so great. And as Carlos came to seek that freedom that millions of others have as well, like my great-grandparents who came from Italy, to seek that same freedom. Ronald Reagan said it best, ‘Freedom is only one generation away from extinction if we don’t fight to defend it.’ Those words of Reagan still ring true today because Carlos, we will continue to fight for freedom.“It’s not an empty fight. There are people on the other side here in America that are pushing back, that want to destroy that capitalist free market system. And so when you look at the results of the election, anybody that wants to go celebrate a blue state voting blue, what they’re not acknowledging is what happened in a city like New York. It reverberates when New York elects a Marxist as their mayor.”On the Democrat party embracing the radical left:“There are other Democrats that are now looking and saying, does the Democrat Party represent me anymore? And today you heard it again. Democrats are the ones who are looking and saying that they’re done with the Democrat Party. Jared Golden yesterday announced he’s not going to run again. And he didn’t just say he wasn’t going to run again because he got tired of serving in Congress. I think it’s really important to pay attention to what Jared Golden said, and he is in a swing district. Jared Golden is one of those moderate Democrats who represents maybe the old Democrat Party now, what was discarded by the voters in Democrat cities and states. But it’s not where America is. So when Jared Golden announced yesterday he’s not going to run again, he said, ‘We’re allowing the most extreme, pugilistic element of our party to call the shots. Just look again at the shutdown. For as long as I can remember, we have opposed shutting down the government over policy disputes. We criticized Republicans for taking hostages this way.’ That was Jared Golden explaining why he’s done with being a Democrat in Congress. “When the Democrat Party no longer stands for common sense, for members that do on occasion reach across the aisle, they’re going to be relegated to a scrap heap of history because America is not a socialist nation. While the Democrat Party has turned their leadership structure over to a socialist, it’s not where America is. If they’re running people like Jared Golden out of their party, they can go celebrate the results of last night’s election… So let them go celebrate New Jersey electing a Democrat governor, New York City electing a Democrat. The real concern is that the Cuomo wing of the Democrat Party got destroyed by the Mamdani wing of the Democrat Party. And if they want to call that a victory, good luck.”On Democrats bragging about using American families for leverage:“While Democrats keep the government shut down, and they brag about it, you heard Senator Murphy yesterday, ‘I think we’re in an enormously strong position right now.’ Strong position? What’s so strong about taking food out of the mouths of 42 [million] American families? What is strong about that, Senator? Sure, you can vote again today to keep the government shut down, but there’s nothing strong about denying food to people who are low-income and who can’t afford it. That’s a weak place to be. But that’s what they’re bragging about. “When, as we saw, the Transportation Secretary yesterday said, 10% of flights are going to have to be cut back because we don’t have enough air traffic controllers, because Democrats chose not to pay them. People are getting ready to go travel to see their family, hopefully for Thanksgiving. But they’re not going to be able to get that flight. They’re going to have to leave a day or two earlier, drive, maybe they won’t be able to fly. But don’t worry, some Democrat senator thinks he’s in a stronger position because he’s now leveraged Americans as pawns in some game. That’s what they think this is. It’s disgusting.”

Excerpts from Leader Scalise’s interview:On Democrats holding Americans hostage over their hatred of President Trump:“There’s already a lot of problems that Democrats have caused by shutting the government down. The most immediate was that you have federal workers, including our men and women in uniform, that started working without pay. Some of them were getting partial pay, but not their full pay. Their bills were still due fully. They still had the rent and the car notes, and all of that was due. And so that was already disrupted. And then you saw even more problems, the SNAP benefits, the women, infant, and children payments that were not going out to those low-income families. These are millions. I’m talking over 42 million people that are put in a really, really horrible position just so that Democrats can have a tantrum because Donald Trump won the presidency. And whatever Chuck Schumer thinks the election Tuesday night had to do with anything. I mean, blue states voted blue. What’s the shocker there? New York elected a socialist as the leader of their party. And Chuck Schumer is in the fetal position, scared to death of Mamdani. That’s the real problem is that Schumer can’t make a move without clearing it now with the socialists in New York. And that’s what’s holding this government hostage. That’s what’s holding American families hostage, and I think people are sick by it.“And Democrats admit they’re causing suffering for families, and they can’t even tell you what they want. They’re just beating their chest because, gee-whiz, New York elected a Socialist mayor, and New Jersey elected a Democrat governor. What did you think was going to happen? That’s no victory.“You just saw it: a 10% reduction in air traffic right before Thanksgiving, when families are going to be going to see their relatives. Many of them are not going to be able to do that now because why? Chuck Schumer is afraid of the socialist wing of his party? Talk about a profile in courage for goodness’ sake.”On President Trump and Congressional Republicans delivering on their promises:“Well, I think the most important thing that we’ve been doing when we won the majority last year, House, Senate, and of course, President Trump in the White House, we ran on very specific things. We said that we would focus on getting the economy back on track, reversing the damage of Joe Biden, get energy prices under control. We’ve done that. We said we’d secure the border. That was the number one issue in America. President Trump, day one, went to work securing the border, and now it is secure. And that’s another issue that we’ve solved. We’ve worked with President Trump over and over again to deliver for American families, hardworking families. And what have Democrats done? They’ve obstructed every step of the way. They voted to raise taxes. They voted against border security. They voted against energy security. All they’re doing, and they shut the government down, a record 37 days. Is that something that they can go to the voters and brag about?”On Democrats’ acceptance of a politically violent candidate: “I think that was the most disappointing result of all is that this was an easy one where voters can just say, look, yeah, might be Republican, might be a Democrat, can we at least not elect the guy who said he wants to kill not just his political opposition, he wanted to kill the children of his political opponent. I mean, this guy should have been disqualified from office. Every law enforcement group in Virginia said he’s not fit for office. He’s going to be the attorney general.
