I witnessed his leadership and integrity when we served on the Oversight committee and passed bipartisan legislation together. Rep. Kelly: ‘I stand with Rep. McIver’

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (IL-02) released the following statement on the charges brought against U.S. Rep. LaMoncia McIver (NJ-10):

“The baseless charges brought against Congresswoman LaMonica McIver are politically motivated by the extreme Trump administration. Let’s set the facts straight: Rep. McIver was fulfilling her moral, legal, and Constitutional responsibility to visit the ICE detention center at Delaney Hall and find answers for her constituents. During what should have been a peaceful visit, ICE agents aggressively confronted and arrested Mayor Baraka. Congressmembers LaMonica McIver, Bonnie Watson Coleman and Rob Menendez were acting fully within their duties.

“I stand with Reps. McIver, Watson Coleman and Menendez. I will not let the President interfere with our Constitutional duty to serve as a check and balance, even as House Republicans cower and bend the knee to President Trump.”

Case Outlines Hawaii And Indo-Pacific Defense Priorities In Testimony On Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Ed Case (Hawai‘i – District 1)

(Washington, DC) — U.S. Representative Ed Case (Hawai‘i – First District) outlined Hawai‘i and Indo-Pacific defense priorities in testimony submitted to the U.S. House Armed Services Committee as it considers the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Congress’ annual legislation authorizing national defense efforts.

Case, a member of the U.S. House Committee on Appropriations and of its Subcommittee on Defense, which is then responsible for funding Department of Defense and related programs authorized by the NDAA, stated that, in the broad context, the Indo-Pacific “is the frontline of our generation-pacing challenges led by the People’s Republic of China (PRC)” and that Hawai‘i “will remain central to our presence and strategy” in the region.

Case went on in his testimony to highlight five inter-related issues that collectively are critical to “maintaining a superior force posture in Hawai‘i, maintaining the support of the people of Hawai‘i for that posture, and projecting our military presence out of Hawai‘i into the broader Indo-Pacific.”

Case’s full testimony is here. His five issues are summarized as follows:

Defense of Hawai‘i

Case stated that while Hawai‘i serves as the headquarters of the Indo-Pacific Command and hosts a range of force-multiplying assets, “the Department of Defense itself has acknowledged that Hawai‘i lacks modern surveillance and response capacities for missile attacks.” He called that gap “unacceptable” and urged the Committee to prioritize and accelerate investment in a state-of-the-art missile defense system for Hawai‘i, as well as investing further in the Hawai‘i National Guard, which provides much of the operation of the system.

Environmental Protection of Hawai‘i

While Case shared his appreciation for the billions of dollars authorized and appropriated by Congress to remediate, defuel and close Red Hill, he highlighted remaining work to protect O‘ahu’s aquifers, as well as to identify and mitigate PFAS risks elsewhere. He also highlighted key natural resource protection programs such as the Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration Program (REPI) under which broad areas of defense and civilian areas near military have been dedicated to protective uses.

Soft Power in the Pacific

Case testified in continued support of defense-administered “soft power” efforts throughout the Indo-Pacific that “foster goodwill, enhance influence and promote stability “in ways that go beyond combat capabilities and at a fraction of the cost.” He referred to programs and institutions like the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in Honolulu, the State Partnership Program under which our National Guards partner with foreign militaries, and the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation (OLDCC) that focuses on military-civilian relationships in states like Hawai‘i and foreign countries.

Defense Contracting Reform and Innovation

To maintain the country’s competitive edge in the Indo-Pacific, Case urged the Committee to “embrace contracting innovation as a strategic imperative.”

Case continued: “We need to continue expanding the use of rapid prototyping pathways that allow us to move at the speed of relevance. By streamlining the acquisition regulations, we can more effectively compete with the PRC, which has invested billions in an effort to develop technology that leapfrogs past our slow-moving acquisition system.”

He cited as an example the work of the Defense Innovation Unit, headquartered in Mountain View, California and which he recently visited, as being instrumental “in bridging the gap between Silicon Valley and the Pentagon, tapping into the commercial sector’s agility to deliver cutting-edge solutions directly to the warfighter.”

Hawai‘i Defense Land Needs/Lease Renegotiations

Case also highlighted defense-related land needs in Hawai‘i, including ongoing efforts to renegotiate leases of some existing state lands. He said, “These lands, many of which are critical for training, readiness and regional posture, must remain available to support our national security objectives.

“At the same time, we must recognize the unique cultural, environmental and community considerations involved.

“That is why I firmly believe the outcome must reflect a win-win – one that upholds the strategic needs of the military over the next generation while honoring the values and priorities of the people of Hawai‘i.”

The House Armed Services Committee will be deliberating the FY 2026 NDAA over the next weeks, at the same time as Case’s Appropriations Defense Subcommittee is considering the FY 2026 budget for the Department of Defense and intelligence agencies.

A Big, Beautiful Future

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Tom McClintock Representing the 4th District of California

Washington, D.C. – Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1, the one Big Beautiful Bill Act reconciliation legislation.  Rep. McClintock (CA-05) voted in favor of the measure, and he delivered remarks this morning on the House floor.  Rep McClintock’s remarks (video link):

“A Big, Beautiful Future”
May 22, 2025

If this bill fails, an average family’s taxes will rise 22 percent next year — about $1,700 a year — the biggest tax increase in American history.

But if it succeeds, working families will be able to keep more of their own earnings.  We’ll be able to complete the border wall and protect our communities from the violent cartels the Democrats allowed into our country.   We’ll relieve pressure on Medicaid by requiring able-bodied adults to look for work.  And we can free up America’s vast energy resources.

The most important economic indicator is how Americans answer this question next year: “Are you better off today than you were two years ago?”

By this time next year, Americans could be enjoying one of the most explosive periods of growth in our history and all that means: secure borders, safer communities, lower taxes, abundant energy, more and better jobs; a higher standard of living and a better quality of life  – a big, beautiful future for all Americans.

Congressman Gonzalez Thanks President Trump for RGV Federal Disaster Declaration

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (15th District of Texas)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) thanked President Trump for issuing a disaster declaration for Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy Counties in response to flooding and rain that devastated the region in March of this year. The Congressman, in concert with local officials across the 34th Congressional District, requested federal relief for the Rio Grande Valley following widespread property damage to the area.

“I thank President Trump for granting a major disaster declaration for our region,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “I hope that FEMA will swiftly deliver desperately needed aid and relief to our communities. I will continue to work with federal, state and local officials to ensure those affected by this disaster receive the necessary resources to begin the recovery and rebuilding process.”

This declaration comes after an April 29, 2025, letter Congressman Gonzalez sent where he urged the President to immediately issue a declaration and empower FEMA to dispense urgently needed assistance. Congressman Gonzalez wrote to Texas Governor Greg Abbott on March 28, 2025, urging him to issue a disaster declaration, and an April 17, 2025, letter from Governor Abbott to President Trump, requesting a Presidential Disaster Declaration. South Texans have been waiting over two months for a determination and final decision from the Trump administration.

Congressman Gonzalez Votes Against Stripping Healthcare from Nearly 50,000 South Texans and Increasing Deficit by $3.8 Trillion

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (15th District of Texas)

Partisan Bill Lowers Taxes for the Ultra-Rich and leaves South Texas Seniors, Veterans, and Families in the Dust

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) released a statement following his vote against the House Republican Budget Bill that would strip almost 14 million Americans off their healthcare, including nearly 50,000 South Texans and add at least $3.8 trillion to the national deficit.

“There is nothing ‘beautiful’ about a bill that lowers taxes for the ultra-rich on the backs of our senior citizens, our children, and our veterans,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “Ripping away health insurance, raising food prices nationwide, increasing the cost of education, harming our senior citizens, and hurting federal workers’ retirement is shameful and I will not stand for it.”

The Bill’s Harmful Impact:

According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), an estimated 49,380 South Texans in TX-34 will lose their healthcare from the proposed Republican budget. This includes people losing both Medicaid and Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage.

Republicans’ refusal to extend ACA tax credits will also spike health insurance costs for the 129,000 South Texans in TX-34 who rely on the ACA.

Additionally, the budget cuts $500 billion in Medicare benefits, which breaks President Trump’s promise to not touch Medicare and triggers automatic cuts to critical programs that fund child abuse prevention, foster care and adoption services, and more.

The Republican budget plan also cuts Supplemental Nutrition Assistance, or SNAP benefits, which, according to the Urban Institute, would lead to as many as 1.4 million children losing access to free or reduced-price school meals nationwide.

These drastic cuts would devastate South Texas. 65,313 households in TX-34 (or 26.1% of total households in the district) are enrolled in SNAP, the highest out of any congressional district in Texas. SNAP cuts also harm struggling farmers and ranchers by reducing consumer demand for food products, which impacts their revenue and bottom line.

The Republican Budget proposal will also increase the price of education as it cuts access to Pell Grants and other federal student aid, jeopardizing the academic future of 4.4 million Pell grant recipients nationwide.

Republicans’ justification for these excessive cuts to lifeline programs are to create a fiscally responsible budget. However, according to the latest CBO projections, their plan will increase the federal deficit by at least $3.8 trillion. This will worsen our economy’s health and hurt hardworking American households.

In short, the Republican budget will leave South Texans and Americans sicker, hungrier, and poorer while the ultra-rich continue to line their pockets.

“I am heartbroken and outraged by the horrific shooting that took place last night in our nation’s capital that killed two Israeli Embassy employees. An attack on one community is an attack on us all. MATSUI BLASTS SENATE VOTE TO REPEAL CALIFORNIA’S CLEAN AIR ACT WAIVERS

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA)

WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-07), Co-Chair of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition, released the following statement after Senate Republicans passed H.J.Res. 87, 88, and 89, overturning the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Act waivers for California’s Advanced Clean Trucks, Advanced Clean Cars II, and Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus rules, effectively blocking these rules from being implemented.

Senate Republicans forced through these dangerous and short-sighted attacks on California’s air pollution regulations despite clear and consistent warnings that these attacks constitute an unlawful abuse of the Congressional Review Act (CRA). Last month, the Government Accountability Office reiterated a 2023 decision that California’s Clean Air Act waivers are not subject to the CRA. The Senate Parliamentarian has affirmed this determination, ruling that the CRA cannot be used to overturn California’s waivers. Congresswoman Matsui strongly condemned Senate Republicans’ unprecedented and unlawful actions.

“Despite clear rulings by the Government Accountability Office and the Senate Parliamentarian – Senate Republicans have chosen to abuse their power to illegally attack California’s right to set stronger air pollution standards,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “The science is clear – pollution kills. In my district and across our state, these emission standards are a matter of life and death. That’s why California has done the hard work to address the root causes of toxic air pollution and set strong, forward-looking standards. We have shown time and again that we can drive innovation while we protect families from harmful pollutants. Now Republicans want to drag us backward—all to help their polluter friends. This is an unprecedented assault on state authority, public health, and our fight against climate change.”

Congresswoman Matsui has spearheaded efforts in Congress calling for stronger emissions standards for cars and trucks. Under the first Trump Administration, the Congresswoman led opposition to then-President Trump’s attempts to revoke California’s pollution standards, and the Congresswoman successfully fought for the reinstatement of California’s authority under the Biden Administration.

In March of 2021, she led a letter with 70 of her colleagues urging the Biden Administration to take action to reinstate California’s Clean Air Act waiver and restore the Obama-Biden tailpipe emission and fuel economy standards. In July of 2021, she led a follow up letter with then Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone and 139 of her colleagues to reiterate the importance of reinstating the California Clean Air Act waiver.
