LEADER JEFFRIES: “ELON MUSK AND I AGREE WITH EACH OTHER, THE GOP TAX SCAM IS A DISGUSTING ABOMINATION”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District of New York)

Today, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries held a press conference where he emphasized that Congressional Democrats remain united in protecting the American people from Trump’s One Big Ugly Bill, while Rubber Stamp Republicans remain united in doing the bidding of the out-of-control Trump White House.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Breaking news. Elon Musk and I agree with each other. The GOP tax scam is a disgusting abomination. Every single Republican who voted for the One Big Ugly Bill should be ashamed of themselves. They aren’t helping their constituents. They are hurting their constituents. That’s an objectively verifiable fact.

The GOP Tax Scam is a disgusting abomination. It rips healthcare away from up to 14 million people, everyday Americans across the country. Hospitals will close, nursing homes will shut down, and yes, people will die if the GOP Tax Scam ever became law. It’s a disgusting abomination. The One Big Ugly Bill would enact the largest cuts in nutritional assistance in American history. That’s also disgusting. Republicans literally want to rip food out of the mouths of children, veterans and seniors. Every single Republican who voted for this bill should be ashamed of themselves. This bill that Republicans narrowly passed, it limped out of the House of Representatives. And we’re going to work hard to make sure it dies in the Senate.

This One Big Ugly bill, the GOP Tax Scam hurts everyday Americans and rewards their billionaire donors with a massive tax break for the wealthy, the well-off and the well-connected. And to make matters worse, they will saddle our children and grandchildren with more than $5 trillion in additional debt in order to subsidize the lifestyles of the rich and shameless. Elon Musk and I agree with each other on this particular issue. The GOP Tax Scam is a disgusting abomination.

VETERANS, EXPERTS SHARE HOW HARMFUL REPUBLICAN POLICIES ARE TO VETERANS CARE

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23)

“As Ranking Member on the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee, I hear heartbreaking stories of our veterans being fired or denied and delayed from receiving their hard-earned benefits and services,” said Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL). “Trump and Republicans are breaking our promise to America’s veterans, letting Elon Musk’s DOGE cut benefits and healthcare our veterans earned while carrying out the largest firing of veterans in American history.”

Norfolk, VA – Today, the House Democratic Steering & Policy Committee held a hearing on the impacts of the Trump Administration proposed policies and DOGE cuts for veterans, led by Co-Chairs Congresswomen Robin Kelly (D-IL) and Nanette Díaz Barragán (D-CA). The committee heard from policy experts, healthcare providers, and veterans on how Republican schemes makes it more difficult to plan, access care, and utilize the programs across the federal government.

“Today, I heard a clear message from veterans, healthcare leaders and VA workers: President Trump’s agenda is making it harder for veterans and their families to receive the care they need,” said Rep. Kelly. “The Trump administration has fired over 6,000 veterans who are federal workers, implemented hiring freezes in the VA hospital system and cut mental healthcare for veterans. These attacks against the brave men and women who served our country in uniform are undignified and disrespectful.”

“Our veterans served our country and have earned the care and benefits they were promised,” said Rep. Barragán. “Yet, Donald Trump and House Republicans have fired thousands of veterans, canceled contracts for programs to end veteran homelessness and prevent veteran suicide, frozen hiring new staff at the VA, and cut programs that provide health care and education — all so that they can line the pockets of their billionaire donors. House Democrats will continue to put our veterans over billionaires, fight back against Trump and House Republicans, and work to keep America’s commitment to our veterans.”

Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA), who hosted the field hearing in his district said, “Today’s hearing highlighted the ways President Trump, Secretary Collins and Congressional Republicans have harmed our nation’s veterans by firing veterans, weakening the VA, and slashing Medicaid. I was proud to host my colleagues in Hampton Roads, home to one of the largest veterans’ populations in the country. I look forward to continuing to work together to protect America’s veterans from these attacks and ensure they receive the quality health care they earned.”

“Since his first day back in office, the President has gone after our nation’s veterans. The President has fired thousands of veterans and VA staff, taken a sledgehammer to the PACT Act serving veterans exposed to toxic substances, and canceled hundreds of contracts for programs supporting veterans’ mental health and addressing veteran homelessness. Make no mistake: This administration is making our veterans, their families, and the American people worse off,” said Rep. Mike Thompson, a veteran.

This year, the Steering & Policy Committee has held hearings on Medicaid, SNAP, Social Security Small Business, and Veterans. Each one shared personal stories of how everyday Americans are being harmed by this administration. The Steering & Policy Committee will continue to hear, collect, and share more stories from across the nation in the months ahead.

Headline: Carter statement on President Trump’s rescissions package being sent to the House

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) today released the following statement on President Trump’s rescissions package that was sent to the House of Representatives, which calls for $9.4 billion in savings identified by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to be codified into law:

“DOGE has done an excellent job identifying waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer dollars. Now, it’s time for us in Congress to do our part to ensure that government efficiency becomes the law of the land. On behalf of President Trump and for the American people, we must get this done quickly and restore both fiscal responsibility and government integrity. I urge Senators Warnock and Ossoff to support this package, as President Trump was given a mandate by the people they supposedly represent to do exactly this.”

Democrats Use District Work Period to Conduct Oversight of ICE Detention Centers

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (7th District of Washington)

WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Representatives Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Immigration, Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Nydia Velázquez (NY-07), Sylvia Garcia (TX-29), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25), Emily Randall (WA-06), Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03), Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03), Mark Pocan (WI-02), and Gwen Moore (WI-04) used the recent district work period to conduct oversight of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities, a critical duty of Members of Congress. These visits come after officials attempted to block Representatives LaMonica McIver (NJ-10), Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), and Rob Menendez (NJ-08) from conducting oversight at the Delaney Hall Detention Facility.

“It is our responsibility and obligation to do oversight of ICE’s enforcement and the rapid sweeping up of people of all immigration statuses,” said Congresswoman Jayapal. “That is why we will continue our announced Congressional visits across the country. My colleagues and I visited the GEO-run Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma for an unannounced inspection and very extremely disappointed that the facility staff delayed our entry and then would not allow us to speak with more detained individuals. However, we were able to speak with two detained persons, including a woman who has been in this country for 20 years and was detained less than a week before she was to be married to a U.S. citizen; as well as a legal permanent resident, who has been here 31 years, is a proud member of the Machinists Union, and is married to a U.S. citizen with three U.S. citizen children. Our detention system utilizes billions of taxpayer dollars to funnel huge profits to for-profit prison contractors that utilize billions of taxpayer dollars to jail people who should not be there. Trump’s mass deportation machine has disappeared and deported people without due process and in defiance of the courts. That’s not what Americans were promised or what they want, and we will continue doing the oversight and work to build a humane and fair immigration system that benefits Americans and protects our valuable immigrant community members. I am grateful to all our members who are conducting these important oversight visits.”

“During the recess week, Rep. Nydia Velázquez and I visited the ICE detention center in Elizabeth, N.J. Importantly, we focused our visit on conversations with detainees, a vast majority of whom were separated from their family and who were detained after abiding by federal government appointments,” said Chair Espaillat. “Our experience during this visit highlighted the immigration detention industrial complex – the Trump administration is using cruelty and lawlessness to funnel taxpayer money to a bloated, dangerous and unnecessary detention system. We will maintain and expand our oversight efforts. We are keeping tabs.”

“At the Elizabeth Detention Center, I met people who have been held in ICE custody for months—ripped from their families and lives here in the U.S., with no clear timeline for release or resolution. This is the real impact of Trump’s mass deportation agenda: indefinite detention, broken families, and a system built on fear,” said Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez. “It’s our job to hold federal agencies accountable and make sure people are treated with dignity and due process. I’ll keep showing up to make sure that happens.”

“Texas has become ground zero for some of this administration’s worst immigration abuses—and that’s why I’m doing everything I can to hold them accountable,” said Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia. “Last week, I visited the Houston Contract Detention Facility to make sure they are following the law. While they answered most of our questions, they declined to provide any copies of reports on daily population, medical visits, or the most recent inspection without consulting ICE. They refused to give us anything we asked for. I’ve done visits like this under both parties and called out wrongdoing every time, because human rights don’t change based on who’s in the White House. And neither does the Constitution. I’ll continue to visit detention sites in Texas and across the country. Because if you’re on American soil, you have rights, and I’m going to make sure they’re respected.”

“I’m deeply concerned by the inhumane, overcrowded conditions I saw inside Krome Detention Center in Miami, which was built for 882 and currently holds more than 1100 men and is the oldest, most dilapidated detention facility in America. People detained there, in the intake half of the facility, were piled into tiny rooms, with no space, no privacy and clearly unsanitary conditions,” said Wasserman Schultz. “Detainees are eventually crammed into dormitories, wall-to-wall, many on cots. Five hundred are on cots in a large tent. It’s outrageous that law-abiding TPS, humanitarian parole, and DACA recipients are snatched off the street and subjected to this harsh captivity, often with no due process. It’s especially chilling given Trump unlawfully shut down DHS’s civil rights and detention watchdogs. That’s why I passed a law in his first term to ensure Members get unannounced access to detention facilities, and I’ll keep conducting rigorous oversight. Krome is a monument to the cruelty and contempt the Trump Administration has for our Constitution. I will not stand by as tens of thousands of lawful immigrants are deprived of their humanity before being returned to brutal dictatorships.”

“I’m proud to have joined my colleagues across the nation in conducting a surprise visit to an ICE detention center and sending a clear message to the Donald Trump Administration that we are watching, and we are not backing down,” said Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03). “During my visit to the Eloy Detention Center, I heard heartbreaking stories of inhumane treatment. As Trump wages his brutal war on immigrants, we’ll keep exposing these abuses and fighting for the rights, dignity, and humanity of every person—no matter their immigration status.”

“Congressman Pocan and I exercised our oversight authority by visiting the only ICE facility in Wisconsin. Given that ICE is operating as if they are above the law and without accountability to Congress, this authority is even more critical now. We were unable to talk with detainees during our visit, but I will continue pressing forward, especially to reach my constituent Ramon Morales Reyes who was wrongfully detained and arrested,” said Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04).

“Members of Congress have a constitutional duty to conduct oversight, which is why I joined my colleague Rep. Gwen Moore in inspecting the only ICE detention facility in Wisconsin,” said Congressman Mark Pocan (WI-02). “While I was appreciative that the facility is well maintained and well run with access to mental health and nutrition services, I was disappointed we were not allowed to speak to any of the detainees, nor could we get any answers about those detained in any detail. There is a serious disconnect between ICE and the facility they use to house detainees that must be rectified. We attempted multiple times to contact anyone at ICE who might be able to help, but were met with significant roadblocks and unanswered calls. Still more than 24 hours later, we have not received a returned call. ICE needs to be more responsive to members of Congress.”

“This was my second visit to Northwest Detention Center — this time unannounced. One thing was very clear: there are discrepancies between ICE and GEO’s tours, and the actual lived experience of those detained individuals we spoke with. The accounts of mealtimes and outside yard access and the ability to contact Tacoma Police Department in cases of assault were not the same between staff and detainees. Many of the individuals in these detention centers are our neighbors, our family members, our friends, our Union brothers and sisters,” said Congresswoman Emily Randall. “These individuals deserve decent and humane treatment, nutritious food and clean water, fresh air and sunshine, access to health care and interpreter services, and the ability to contact law enforcement when necessary. We will not close our eyes while hardworking, 20-year residents are snatched off the street and hidden away. We will keep watching, and we will keep fighting for a better immigration system — for all of us.”

“The Northwest Detention Center is harboring some of the most heartbreaking stories in our region. Trump claims he’s going after criminals but the reality is he’s going after moms, union leaders, green-card holders. He’s detaining our neighbors, our coworkers, and our loved ones—without guaranteed due process or any accountability,” said Congresswoman Dexter. “On my visit, the discrepancy between what ICE told us and what we heard from those detained was damning. There is zero clarity on who is being detained and their quality of life. From mealtimes to access to fresh air, from medical care to reporting assault—nothing aligned. Let’s be clear: this system is not designed to keep anyone safe. It is designed to break spirits, strip rights, and disappear people from our communities—all funded by your tax dollars. I will not back down from this fight.”

“Oversight is one of our most important duties as members of Congress,” said Congresswoman LaMonica McIver. “It is both legally protected and our obligation. Last month, I was criminally charged after I conducted an oversight visit at an ICE detention center in my district to hold this administration accountable for how it treats people in its custody,” said McIver. “We regularly conduct these visits, and conduct them unannounced, to get a sense of real conditions for detainees—the law grants us this right. We will not be intimidated or deterred as we work to get answers for our constituents and uphold the rights of everyone in this country.”

“The Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress have tried to intimidate, silence, and target us for fulfilling our lawful oversight responsibility at Delaney Hall,” said Congressman Rob Menendez (NJ-08). “But we, along with our fellow House Democrats, won’t be silenced nor will we back down. Not today, not ever. When this Administration crosses the line, we will hold them accountable. When they target our communities, we will be the voice for everyone who calls them home, we will fight back and we will win.”

“As Members of Congress, we have an obligation to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch,” said Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman. “Our constituents count on us to ensure our laws are being followed, people’s rights are being protected, and our tax dollars are not being mismanaged. The continued efforts by the Department of Homeland Security to impede the Legislative branch’s oversight responsibilities and to sidestep Judicial rulings speaks to a department that is out of control, suffering from failed leadership, and flirting with authoritarianism.”

The Members conducted oversight at the Northwest Detention Center, Dodge County Jail, Elizabeth Detention Center, Houston Contract Detention Facility, Eloy Detention Center, and Krome Detention Center during the May district work period, following the oversight at Delaney Hall. In some cases, they were required to wait for extended periods of time before being allowed to enter, despite federal law granting the authority to conduct oversight at any time, unannounced.

Section 527 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 (Public Law 118-47) explicitly states that the Department of Homeland Security cannot prevent Members of Congress from “entering, for the purpose of conducting oversight, any facility operated by or for the Department of Homeland Security used to detain or otherwise house aliens […]. The law goes on to state that “Nothing in this section may be construed to require a Member of Congress to provide prior notice of the intent to enter a facility […] for the purpose of conducting oversight.”

Newhouse Applauds Passage of Aerial Firefighter Legislation

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Dan Newhouse (4th District of Washington)

Headline: Newhouse Applauds Passage of Aerial Firefighter Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement upon unanimous passage of S.160, the Aerial Firefighter Enhancement Act of 2025 that strengthens aerial wildfire suppression efforts by utilizing excess military aircraft and parts.

“This legislation is a huge step in mitigating the impacts of wildfires and gives our firefighters the tools they need to keep our communities safe,” said Rep. Newhouse. “Utilizing the Department of Defense’s excess aircraft gives aerial firefighters an upper hand while leveraging the assets we already have at our disposal. I thank Senator Sheehy from Montana for his leadership as we send this legislation to the president’s desk.”

Rep. Newhouse introduced the bipartisan companion legislation in the House of Representatives alongside Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-CA) in February. The version passed today was sponsored by Senator Tim Sheehy (R-MT) and was passed by the Senate in April under Unanimous Consent. The legislation now heads to the White House to be signed by President Trump.

“This year is the most dangerous and expensive wildfire year in history, and the Aerial Firefighting Enhancement Act will give wildland firefighters the tools they need to protect communities and save lives. Eliminating bureaucratic obstacles to fight wildfires more quickly and aggressively is America First common sense, and I appreciate my colleagues in the House and Senate for their support. I look forward to seeing this bipartisan bill cross the finish line so we can better support the brave first responders on the front lines fighting wildfires across the country,” said Senator Sheehy.

The legislation is supported by 10 Tanker Air Carrier, Billings Flying Service, and Firehawk Helicopters.

Joel Kerley, President and CEO, 10 Tanker Air Carrier said “10 Tanker Air Carrier supports and thanks the bipartisan efforts of Congress to help the many operators involved with aerial firefighting to purchase at fair market value excess, retired military spare parts, particularly desperately needed engines and brakes. This commonsense approach will ensure that our aging fleet will remain available to the United States to battle the devastating wildland fires of today and well into the future.  We are pleased that the Department of Defense and the Air Force also support the national security mission of companies like ours.”

Bridger Blain, President, Billings Flying Service said, “Billings Flying Service is grateful to Rep. Carbajal and Rep. Newhouse for their leadership in introducing the Aerial Firefighting Enhancement Act of 2025. As an operator providing aerial wildfire suppression services across the United States, maintaining BFS fleet readiness is ever so critical to our mission. This Act opens up direct access to U.S. Armed Forces surplus parts, allowing operators to keep their aircraft in the air and deployed on life-saving missions. We are proud of the advancements Congress has made in protecting the sustainment of aerial wildfire resources, and we look forward to the Aerial Firefighter Enhancement Act becoming law.”

Bart Brainerd, CEO, Firehawk Helicopters said, “Firehawk Helicopters is encouraged by the passing of the Aerial Firefighting and Enhancement Act and would like to thank Rep. Newhouse, Rep. Carbajal, Sen. Tim Sheehy and Sen. Martin Heinrich for leading the efforts in seeing this bill passed. Since 2017 the aerial firefighting community has lost access to a critical aircraft and parts supply source. Taxpayers have lost hundreds of millions of dollars as valuable aircraft and aircraft parts were no longer made available for commercial sale.  The law will save these critical aircraft and parts from being scrapped. By making these aircraft and parts available for commercial sale again, the taxpayers will reap the maximum return on their original investment, but more importantly, see these aircraft and parts utilized in a second life that prioritizes the protection of the public from the growing threat of devastating wildfires.”

Background

The Aerial Firefighting Enhancement Act of 2025 amends the Wildfire Suppression Aircraft Transfer Act of 1996 to reauthorize the sale of aircraft and parts by the Department of Defense for wildfire suppression.

This bipartisan bill will help the U.S. better suppress wildfires year-round by facilitating the acquisition of military excess aircraft, sold at fair market value, for the aerial wildfire suppression fleet. Additionally, the sale of parts will help the U.S. maintain its existing aerial firefighting aircraft fleet.

The bill reauthorizes the Secretary of Defense to sell excess Department of Defense aircraft and aircraft parts, which are acceptable for commercial sale, to persons or entities that contract with the government for the delivery of fire retardants or water by air to suppress wildfires, as long as the aircraft and parts are used only for wildfire suppression. The initial authority expired in 2005 and was reauthorized from 2012 to 2017 before lapsing again.

Carbajal Statement on Trump Administration Reversing USDA Office Closures in California

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Salud Carbajal (CA-24)

U.S. Representative Salud Carbajal (D-CA-24) released the following statement after the Trump Administration announced it is backing down from its plans to close several California-based U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offices. The announcement comes on the heels of Senator Adam Schiff’s (D-CA) letter, which was co-led by Carbajal, to the Administration urging them to reverse their plan to close the offices.

“Today’s announcement is a big victory for California’s agricultural industry, which would have faced needless hardship under the Administration’s reckless plan,” said Rep. Carbajal. “I thank Senator Schiff for leading this fight to protect our state’s critical USDA resources. While today proved that advocacy is still a powerful tool, we must continue to push back against this Administration’s most extreme policies.”

According to USDA, eight of the nine California USDA offices previously slated for termination by the Trump Administration will no longer be closed. Those eight offices are located in Bakersfield, Blythe, Los Angeles, Madera, Oxnard, Salinas, Woodland, and Yreka. The Mt. Shasta office and newly added Brea office have not been removed from the list of terminations. Carbajal will continue to work with Schiff and the California congressional delegation to ensure that the remaining offices can operate without interruption.

Last month, Carbajal led a letter to Acting Administrator Stephen Ehikian of the General Services Administration over the planned illegal closures of crucial facilities across the Central Coast. The planned closures would impact the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the United States Forest Service (USFS) facilities in Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties.

Larsen Releases Statement on the Closing of the Job Corps Program

Skagit County, W.A., June 3, 2025

Today, Representative Rick Larsen released the following statement on the closing of the Job Corps program:

“As a part of the Trump administration’s efforts to give a tax break to the richest Americans and wealthiest corporations, Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer has closed the Job Corps program.

“This terrible decision directly harms Northwest Washington. In its 40 year history, Cascade Job Corps has helped more than 10,000 low-income young people complete college credits and professional certifications. Today, the program serves 250 young people and employs 119 staff members. It also supports administrative capacity and career training services at the Everett WorkSource Center.

“When Cascade Job Corps shuts down at the end of the month, many of those 250 young people will lose access to housing and health care, and all of them will lose access to the education they were pursuing. All staff members will lose their jobs as well.

“In the past week, my office has received 90 messages from Cascade Job Corps students, alumni, and staff, and other community leaders who see the vital services the program provides. I hear you, and I share your anger.

“One year ago, my former House of Representatives colleague Lori Chavez-DeRemer signed onto a letter supporting funding for the Job Corps program. Today, as the Secretary of Labor, she has closed the program.

“I urge Secretary Chavez-DeRemer to meet with me and other members who represent communities who are hurting because of this decision. I support the Job Corps program, and I agree with the letter the Secretary signed onto last year: ‘Your support will allow Job Corps to continue its track record of providing effective career and technical education to many of the most vulnerable young Americans in our communities.’”

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-22) announced her recent appointment by Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, which governs the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

“I’m deeply honored to join the United States Holocaust Memorial Council and help carry forward its mission to preserve the memory of the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust,” said Rep. Frankel. “At a time when antisemitism is surging at alarming levels, it is our duty to keep the Holocaust’s lessons alive and stand united against bigotry, violence, and ignorance in all its forms.”

Rep. Frankel, who serves as Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs, is one of five Members of the House of Representatives appointed to the Council. The Council also includes five members of the Senate, 55 presidential appointees, and three ex-officio members representing the Departments of State, Education, and the Interior. She joins Reps. Brad Schneider (D-IL-10), Don Bacon (R-NE-2), David Kustoff (R-TN-8), and Max L. Miller (R-OH-7).

Each year, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum welcomes nearly 2 million visitors, including students, educators, and global dignitaries. As a world-renowned institution, the Museum preserves one of the largest archives of Holocaust documentation, supports cutting-edge research, and educates millions through in-person and online programs. It also leads efforts to prevent modern-day atrocities through its Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide and works globally to combat antisemitism and uphold human rights.

Established by Congress in 1980, the United States Holocaust Memorial Council serves as the governing board of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, a living memorial dedicated to honoring Holocaust victims and educating future generations to stand up against hatred and defend human rights.
