Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Norma Torres (CA-35) released a statement denouncing Tom Steyer latest political ad:
“I am outraged by an ad supporting Tom Steyer, attacking late Congressman Raúl Grijalva, a man who dedicated his life to public service and who passed away from battling cancer.
“Using a Latino Member of Congress’s illness as a political punchline is not just shameful, it is morally bankrupt. Congressman Grijalva’s missed votes were the result of serious health challenges. To weaponize that reality for political gain is cruel, cynical, and deeply disrespectful to him, his family, his legacy of accomplishment, and the millions of Americans who have faced cancer.
“This ad doesn’t just attack one member, it sends a chilling message to the Latino community and to anyone fighting serious illness: that your humanity is fair game for political exploitation.
“We can debate policy. We can debate votes. But exploiting a distinguished Latino leader who battled cancer to score cheap political points crosses a line. I call on Tom Steyer to denounce and take this ad down immediately.”
