Washington, D.C.—Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) released the following statement in reaction to President Trump’s State of the Union address:

“Since day one, this Administration has made countless false promises to the American people, and tonight, the nation witnessed a President struggling to defend over a year of disastrous policies. South Texans are fed up with reckless decisions made on a whim that are spiking prices on everyday goods, denying families access to affordable health care, and rogue immigration operations which are creating labor shortages, wreaking havoc on our communities and tragically resulting in American citizens being murdered on our streets.

“The State of the Union is meant to be a bicameral, bipartisan opportunity for Congress to come together and work toward solutions that strengthen our country, not further divide us. However, what we heard was nothing more than partisan lies and dangerous rhetoric.

“In fact, there was no mention of how we will resolve ongoing issues to sustain population and economic growth in areas like the Coastal Bend. Despite recent photo ops by this Administration in our region, there is still much uncertainty regarding their commitment to solving water sustainability. Also concerning, was the lack of assurance for continuation of Title I funding for our public schools, which so many South Texas children depend on to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to get ahead in life.

“Our military might is the envy of the world, and installations like Naval Air Station (NAS) Kingsville and the Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD) are crucial to national security. Yet the President failed to acknowledge our crumbling military bases and the need to assure areas like Corpus Christi and Kingsville stay strong and vibrant to guarantee job growth. The strength and capability of the United States’ military is our first line of defense, both at home and abroad. We must serve the men and women who put their lives on the line for freedom with the utmost respect, and this includes modernized and state-of-the-art facilities.

“South Texans deserve real leaders who prioritize improving the quality of life of those they represent instead of rubberstamping an extreme agenda that caters only to billionaires and large corporations. That is why I will continue fighting to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits, lower health care costs, undo harmful tariffs that are hurting our farmers and businesses, and hold this Administration accountable for its inhumane and unjust actions.”
